I've made a first stab at putting the "Brady Jumble Sheet" into some form. I'd be grateful if others compared and showed me where I've gone wrong, or made other corrections. Since it is a Word file, I cannot attach it here, but would be happy to send directly to anyone who has the Jumble Sheet.
Jeanne - I have made a couple corrections based on our emails. Thanks.
Sally

Re: Bozman Brady connections

Below "Percelland--her children double cousins" is a list of names that starts with Benjamin and the bracket to the right indicates that these are "Bosman" or actually Bozmans. So this must refer to Benjamin Bozman and wife Priscilla Brady. Who would the children be "double cousins" to? I think she means that they are double cousins to Cleason Calvin Brady and Jane Bozman's children, who are listed next. This would mean then, that Cleason Calvin Brady and Priscilla Brady Bozman were siblings and that Benjamin Bozman and Jane Bozman Brady were siblings.

So then the Bozmans listed are Benjamin, James, Welch, Sallie, and Kernie.
Going back to the top of the sheet, where it says (if I have it right) Isaiah Waters Brady's grandparents on his mother's side (in other words, Jane's Bozman's parents) were Edward Bozman and possibly Sarah Gutridge or Rutledge and taking that with the fact that Benjamin and Priscilla's children are called double cousins, and the accepted daughters of Edward, Sarah and Kerrenhappuch, I think this must be a list of the children of Edward and Sarah Bozman. So they would include Benjamin who married Priscilla Brady, James, who I think should actually be Jane who married Cleason Brady (especially since she's not listed), Sarah, who married Elias Mager (the sheet says Sallie married Elias Mayer), and Kerenhappuch, who married Ignatius Wheeler (the sheet says Kernie married Wheeler). Welch must be Wilkes. The list says he married a Clendon or Glendon and had one daughter and a son named Edwin, again probably Edward. And this Wilkes does show up in Brooke Co., VA in 1830. He and his wife are both between 20 and 30 and they have two boys and one girl all under 5. I don't know what happens to them after that.

Linda Hudson promises to share more of what she's found. She's already told me that Ellen "Ella" was born in 1864 and died in 1926 and her daughter Rose Marie was born in 1893.

Hi Jeanne - the "Lydia" for Elizabeth Waters probably comes from the will of James Brady "beloved wife Lydia Brady." Also, Priscilla (Brady) Bozman and husband Benjamin named their first daughter Lydia, which would be traditional, if that was her mother's name.
- Sally

The second line says "Grandmother on Father's side was Elizabeth Waters married James Brady". I've seen a few files on Rootsweb World Connect that say James Brady married Elizabeth Waters. It makes sense, since Cleason Calvin Brady named his son Isaiah Waters Brady. There must be some reference to her as Lydia, since Barbara Shroyer calls her that. But I think the given name Elizabeth has more nicknames than any other. And these could include Libbie, which could morph to Liddie. My gr-gr-grandfather, Madison Bozman, must have been known as Matt because some of his descendants assumed that his name was Matthew. So nicknames don't always follow rules.
Under that, I think, is a list of 3 sons of James Brady and Elizabeth Waters: Levi, E. C., and Thomas. I don't know a lot about these Bradys but I think "E.C' is supposed to be C.C. for Cleason Calvin. I have found the other two boys in census records. And then comes "Percelland", or Priscilla. So next I'll give my take on her.

Re: Bozman Brady connections

The sheet starts out saying "Grandmother on Mother's side...". So we have to establish whose grandmother and grandfather Ellen is talking about. It's clearly not her own grandparents because her grandmother on her father's side was Jane Bozman. She must be referring to the grandparents of her father, Isaiah Waters Brady. So when she talks about grandparents on father's side, these would be the parents of Cleason Calvin Brady. And grandparents on mother's side would be the parents of Jane Bozman. So I'll start there. Ellen says "Grandmother on Mother's side was a Garthage--married Edwin Bozman". This must be an Edward, not "Edwin". We haven't found any Edwins. I THINK this is Edward, son of original immigrant Edward and Rose Lyon. Some sources list his birth as 1765. I just found out for sure that he's buried in Morgan Co., OH next to his daughter, Sarah Magers. So it's important that he WAS in Ohio. (The cemetery book for Morgan Co. and Find a Grave, based on the book, is not right.) Barbara Shroyer says this Edward's wife's name was "Sarah ?". So I think Sarah must be this "Garthage" that Ellen refers to. That's backed up by some of the children listed further down on the sheet. I haven't traced Edward through the early census records so I don't know where or when Sarah died. Maybe it was even before Edward went to Brooke Co., VA. The children all seem to have been born in MD from what I can tell. So how well would her name be remembered by the family? I think it MUST have been something that sounded like Garthage. I found Gutridge and Guthridge as possibilities. But what about Rutledge? There was a big Rutledge family in Baltimore Co., MD in the 1700s and some of them did move to southeast Ohio. In fact, some of them were living in the same part of Morgan County where Edward Bozman was in 1840.
So to wrap this up, I think Jane Bozman, wife of Cleason Calvin Bozman, was the son of Edward Bozman and Sarah "Garthage" possibly Rutledge.

I think to understand these notes, we have to put them in context. I picture Rose Marie sitting with her elderly mother, asking her to tell her about both the Bozman and Brady sides of the family, because she knows there's a story there. I don't know when the interview took place, or even when these two ladies died. Maybe someone else can share that. I don't think Rose was familiar with the people she was writing about, or at least she didn't know how to spell their names. Maybe she was also hard-of-hearing, or maybe her mother didn't talk very loud.
We have an advantage that Rose didn't have. We have amazing technology, the ability to pull up census records, marriage records, etc., at out finger tips. And thanks to this technology, we also have each other. So let's put our heads together and figure this out!

These sheets of notes were sent to me by Linda Hudson Bailey and she's given me permission to share. I think it might be easier to discuss it here so anyone can offer comments. Linda says, "The information about Edwin Bozman and Unknown Carthage or Garthage is from an old, typewritten sheet (front and back) typed by Rose Marie Brady Long, who typed it based on information provided to her by her mother, Ellen Carolina Brady Long Lowery. Ellen was a sister to John Howe Brady, who was my great grandfather. John and Ellen and others were children of Isaiah Waters Brady and Mary Elizabeth McGuire."

Sally, if you look at the biography for Joseph W. that I posted, you'll see that Benjamin and Priscilla had 12 children but it only names the 4 who were still living. I'm trying to work out who they all are. One of the daughters, Elizabeth Jane Bozman, married Stephen Hemry. There's a file that includes them on World Connect that has lots of documentation. One thing is a probate court file awarding custody of their minor child, Clarence Hemry, to Cyrus Hemry, and it names Benjamin Norris and Edward Bozman as sureties. Benjamin Norris was married to Eliza Bozman, a daughter of Benjamin and Priscilla. So that's why I think Edward was a son of Benjamin and Priscilla. Also, Edward named a son Benjamin. Do you know what Mary's maiden name was? You can e-mail me.
jeanne_crews (and I'm at yahoo.com)

I also am descended from those parents, but most of my info came from Barbara Shroyer's genealogy site, and the Edward she lists is son of Wilkes Bozman (no dates). I have not had much luck with this family. Sally Houston

Bio of James Bozman, Licking County, Ohio

History of Licking county: BOWLING GREEN TOWNSHIP.
BOZMAN, JAMES, born in Perry county, Ohio, November 29, 1844; the son of William and Eliza Bozman. When about a year old, his father and family came to this county, residing first in Brownsville, then Jacksontown. His father went to California in 1850, where he soon after died. His mother subsequently married James Fairley, and Mr. Bozman lived with them on the Brubaker farm, about three miles south of Newark, till 1859, then moved with them to Marion county; remaining with them till the fall of 1862. He returned to this county, but shortly after he went again to Marion county for the purpose of attending school. February 26, 1864, he enlisted in the Fourth Ohio infantry, company H. When the Fourth and Eighth regiments were consolidated in June, 1864, he became a member of company C. As a soldier he was engaged in some of the severest battles which witnessed the closing period of the war; participating. in the seven days fighting in the Wilderness, where he was wounded on the last day, the battles of Hatcher's Run, Petersburgh, etc.; was mustered out at Jefferson, Indiana, July13, 1865; returned to this county in 1866; in 1867 lived in Hardin county; 1868-1873 in Licking county; then four years in Effingham, Illinois, since when he has lived in Amsterdam. Married in 1870 to Lucinda Tracy, of Linnville, and has had four children; George Francis, Mattie, Anna Mary, and James. Of these, only one, Anna Mary, survives.
Wm Madison Bozman, Licking & Logan Cos. OH, new info

I've succeeded in connecting my 3rd gr grandfather, William Madison Bozman, to his parents. "Madison" was born 7 Oct 1846 in Jacksontown, Licking Co., Ohio to William Bozman and Eliza Parr. He appears in the 1850 census in Jackson in Licking Twp., but it took some creative searching to find him.

1850 Jackson in Licking Twp., Licking Co., OH
(indexed as Boasman on Ancestry)
Wm Bousman 27 occupation is BS (blacksmith?)
b OH (actually ditto marks)
Eliza 25
James 5
Madison 4

After Madison is listed an 18 yr old female, looks like Susan. From what I understand, Benjamin Bozman had a daughter named Susan and this Susan would be the right age. I'm wondering if Susan was William's sister, and therefore, if this William was Benjamin's son.
There is a biography in Licking County for James Bozman, son of this William (and therefore brother of my Madison) which says that the father went to California in 1850 and died soon afterward. I'll post the bio in a separate message.

John R. Bozman obituary

John R. Bozman, a prominent citizen of McConnelsville, died last Saturday. He was born in Maryland, March 5th 1807, and moved to Morgan county in 1819. He was married to a daughter of Cleason Brady, of Muskingum County, in 1830. She died in 1847, leaving eight children, four of whom are still living. He afterwards married Jane Glass, the mother of two daughters who are still living. She having died in 1873, he was married to Margaret Oliver, who is still living. Mr. Bozman commenced life with little ore than a healthy body, and an indomitable will. His success was due largely to his tireless energy and good judgment. He was careful and considerate in his business transactions. During his long life in Morgan County he has been connected with various industries, but the greater part of his life was spent droving. He has amassed quite a large fortune, though he had given largely to his children. Not withstanding he was, in the latter part of his life, an ardent Democrat, yet he was liberal in his views. His funeral took place Monday, at 2 p.m., and one more of McConnelsville's pioneers has passed from our midst to his long home.

This is from an undated clipping. John R. Bozman died 22 March 1890. The obit probably appeared the week of March 23, 1890 in either the McConnelsviile Herald or the Morgan County Democrat.

Some of the references I have show the spelling both ways, so it has been difficult tracing him back.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Descendants of Cleason Bozman m. Elizabeth Bryant

Hi,
My name is Valerie, and I am the daughter of Laura June Stegall, whose mother was Eliza Marie Bozman (she was named after your Great-Grandmother Eliza), and was the daughter of William (Edward) Bozman, who was (according to his funeral annoucement) the son of Ephriam (not Cleason) & Elizabeth Bryant Bozman, and the brother of Eliza Lewis. So if your Great-Grandmother was Eliza Bozman that married David Charles Lewis on Jan. 26, 1892 in Knox Co, IL, then we should be third cousins. I've been having a tough time tracking down the Bozman lineage with any accuracy, but I keep trying in my spare time. So when I read your post, I was really surprized to find someone else looking for the same Bozman family as myself. My Great-Grandfather & your Great-Grandmother were extremely close. I have a couple of photos of your Great-Grandmother with my Great-Grandfather & his wife Laura Perkins Bozman, along with a photo of your Great-Grandmother holding a baby on her lap and on the back it says something funny like, "Grandma Lewis & ? (I can't remember the baby's name), both without teeth!" She also signed my mother's autograph book back on August 9, 1930 and gave her address as R.2 Box-93. If you would like to see the pictures that I have, just send me your e-mail address and I'll send them to you. I would also be interested in any information that you might have on the Bozman family. I'm wondering if Cleason was Ephriam's middle name, or vice-versa? I know that back then it was proper to use your middle name instead of your first, and most of the information that I find about my Great-Grandfather, gives his name as Edward Bozman, instead of William Edward Bozman. Well cousin, my search continues! If you would like to contact me, my e-mail address is melancholy_baby@mchsi.com. Hope to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Valerie
Biography of Wilkes E. Bozman, Sumner Co., KS

Portrait and Biographical Album of Sumner County, Kansas 1885
By Chapman Brothers
Wilkes E. Bozman
The mercantile interests of Argonia find a worthy representative in the person of the subject of this notice, who established himself in business at this place in 1886, and is enjoying a fair share of patronage. He has seen considerable of the great West, going when a young man of twenty years to California, by the way of the Isthmus of Panama, and was engaged at mining in the Golden State for a period of nine years, being fairly successful. He has been a keen observer, although quiet and self-contained, and possesses a good fund of general information, being a man with whom an hour may always be spent in a pleasant and profitable manner. He is held in high esteem in this community, both as a man and a citizen.
A native of Morgan County, Ohio, Mr. Bozman was born August 8, 1831, and there grew to man's estate, acquiring such education as was to be obtained in the common school. After hi sojourn on the Pacific Slope, he returned, in 1860, to his native State, and settling in Muskingum County, engaged in farming and stock-raising for about twenty-one years, coming then to Kansas. In the meantime, in 1864, he assumed domestic relations, being married in January, that year, to Miss Asenath, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hiatt, the latter being natives of Virginia. Mrs. Hiatt departed this life at her home in Ohio many years ago. The father of Mrs. Bozman came to Kansas, and is now residing on a farm in Reno County. Of his first marriage there were born five children, only three of whom are living. Mrs. Bozman was born in Ohio, in January, 1833, to which State the family had removed about 1828-1829.
Four children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Bozman, the eldest of whom a daughter, Frances, is the wife of Dr. J. S. Baughman, of Argonia, and they have two children; Edward married Miss Bertha Hall, and they are living in Argonia; John Wilkes married Miss Nettie Hetrick; neither of these has children; William T. is unmarried, and makes his home with his parents, being a telegraph operator for the Santa Fe Railroad. Mrs. Bozman and her daughter are prominently connected with the Presbyterian Church.
While a resident of Ohio, Mr. Bozman served as Justice of the Peace for the long period of eighteen years in succession. He was also a member of the School Board there for twenty-one years. A staunch Democrat and active in local politics, he was as at one time made a candidate of his party for the legislature, but was defeated with the balance of the ticket. His people were old-line Whigs, with southern proclivities, and later identified themselves with the Democratic party.
The father of our subject was John Bozman, a native of Ohio, who, during the years of his active life, was engaged as a stock dealer and grazier. He was first married in his native State to Miss Eliza Brady, a native of Virginia, and they settled in Morgan County, where the mother of our subject died in 1845, when Wilkes E. was a lad of fourteen. The elder Bozman was subsequently married to Jane Glass, and is now deceased, aged eight-five years old. His wife is also deceased. Of the first marriage there were born four children, all of whom are living. The paternal grandfather was Wilkes Bozman, a native of Baltimore County, Md. and who removed to Ohio in 1808. He served during the War of 1812, and assisted at the bombardment of Ft. Henry. A prominent and successful man, he became an extensive farmer, leaving at his death two thousand acres of land in Morgan County, Ohio.

Biography of Joseph W. Bozman, Louisa Co IA

Portrait and Biographical Album of Louisa County, Iowa
By Acme Publishing Company, Chicago
published 1889
Joseph W. Bozman, a general farmer and stock-raiser, residing on section 8, Wapello Township, was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, June 18, 1827, and is a son of Benjamin and Priscilla (Brady) Bozman, the father a native of Virginia, and the mother of Maryland. They were the parents of twelve children, four of whom are yet living: Lewis, a farmer of this county; James B., who is engaged in farming in Nebraska; Eliza, widow of Benjamin Norris, now living in Lexington, Perry Co., Ohio; and Joseph. Benjamin Bozman was a weaver by trade, following that occupation until his marriage, after which he engaged in farming. His death occured about the year 1861, his wife dying the year following. Both were members of the Baptist Church.
Our subject received his education in the common schools of his native county, and since early life has followed the occupation of farming. He was united in marriage with Miss Nancy A. Orrison, their union being celebrated Nov. 10, 1853. The lady was born June 10, 1833 in Perry County, Ohio, and is a daughter of Payton and Ruth (Tipton) Orrison, the father a native of Virginia, and the mother of Maryland. Mr. Orrison died when Mrs. Bozman was but a small child, and the death of her mother occured in 1852. The union of our subject and his wife has been blessed with a family of ten children, six of whom were born to them in Perry County, Ohio, namely; Albert H., a graduate of Howe's Academy of Mt. Pleasant, now a teacher of recognized ability in Louisa County; Minerva, who is also a graduate of Howe's Academy, and was a teacher in the county, is now the wife of Isaiah Down, a farmer of Wapello Township; Isadore M. is the wife of E. M. Sprinkle, who is engaged in farming in Jefferson Township; Almeda M. died when twenty-three years of age; Ulysses G. and George S., at home. The remaining children, John F., Norris, William and Lulu M. were born in Louisa County, Iowa.
In his native county Mr. Bozman was the owner of 170 acres of land, 100 of which were under cultivation, but not being satisfied with the locality, and having a chance to sell, he disposed of his property, and came directly to Louisa County, where he purchased 200 acres of land on section 7 and 8 in Wapello Township. This tract was in a comparatively raw condition, only about thirty acres being under cultivation, but he immediately began its improvement and has made a fine farm. He has since added forty acres to his original purchase, and everything about the place denotes him to be a man of enterprise and progress. Financially, he is a self-made man. Beginning life with no capital but a strong arm and a determination to make his way in the world, with that energy which characterizes his every action he has made his life a success. For his first labor he received but twenty-five cents per day, and afterward secured employment at rail cutting, receiving twenty-five cents for every 100 rails cut. Being a man of strength and muscular power, he was able to prepare 250 rails per day. Thus, little by little, he earned the money which enabled him to purchase a farm, and now has a comfortable competency laid up for his old age. He has given his children a good education, giving them the advantages of the higher branches in academies or colleges as they have attained sufficient age. For many years Mr. Bozman has been a member of the Christian Church, while his wife belongs to the Church of God. He has held various township offices with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents, and in his political sentiments is a Republican. He cast his first Presidential vote for Franklin Pierce, but after the organization of the Republican party joined its ranks, and has since been a strong advocate of its principles. He has always been prominent in the promotion of the moral and social interests of the community and is an honored and respected citizen of Louisa County.
Valerie - I still haven't heard from you, and your email address no longer works. If you are still watching this board, please contact me. We are third cousins and should share info and photos of Mary Eliza Bozman Lewis and William Edward Bozman and their descendants.
Thanks, Sally, svhous@berkeley.edu

Valerie - I was fascinated by the information you added to what I already have. I've snapshots of the three younger children of Cleason and Elizabeth (Bryant) Bozman in their older years which I could share. I sent a couple messages to your email as included in your post. Did you get them? Also, I have a photo which may or may not be Elizabeth (Bryant) Bozman and an old man. Hope to hear from you. - Sally
