Hi,Ole Nelson's birth name was Ole Braaten. His dad was Nels Olson Braaten and his mom was Ingeborg Claussen. Ole was an only child from Nels' 2nd marriage. His mom and unborn brother Halvor died in a farm accident.Ole was only 1 at the time, so the 3rd wife raised him. He had 2 older brothers from the 1st marriage, Ole and Kolbjorn. He changed his last name to Nelson (Nels son) because the 2 of them were on the same mail route, and got each others mail.
Nels and the 3rd wife, Anna had 9 children together.
Ole was married to Jorand Petersdatter Pladson, and they had 12 kids. Their daughter was my grandma Christine, my mom's mother. The other kids were,Ada(Ida),Henry,Peder,Mina,
Albert,Oscar,Gida,Olvin and Mabel.
I have a lot of info to share. Let me know.
Gloria Wyatt at donglo@charter.net We would be 2nd cousins. ph.6513883341

Hi, I think my great grandfather was Ole Nelson, but I am not sure. Do you know the names of his children? Do you know anything about Oscar Nelson from Starbuck? He was my grandfather, (died in 1969) and I don't know for sure who his father was. Thank you.

Carrie J. and Carl Braaten, and Andrew Holland

Hi - I'm trying to find out about Carl Holland - who are his parents and if adopted or other.

Carl is listed as the son-in-law within the Jasp and Aasa Braaten family - North Dakota census 1899. He was 2 at the time. Carrie J. is listed as the Braaten's daughter.

Andrew Holland, in that same census, is listed as a lodger with another family.

Sometime later, Andrew and Carrie were married, and Carl became part of their family and had the last name Holland. They travelled to Saskatchewan in the where Carl married Mary, and they had my mom.

I have my suspicion that Carrie may be Carl's mom, but can confirm nothing. I don't know if Andrew is Carl's dad.
Mother of Clara Braaten of St, Hilaire MN

I'm looking for information about the mother of Clara Emilia Braaten. She lived in St. Hilaire MN in 1883 when Clara was born. Clara's obituary says her parents are Eric and Ollia Braaten. (Erick C. Braaten later married Anna Haugen Seaverson). I'm not sure if Clara's mom's name is Ollia or Emilia. I'd really like to know where to look to find information, or to connect with anyone who is in this family. Many thanks!

Hi, Nels Braaten(LiaBraaten?)was my great, great grandfather also. He was born in 1832 in Flaa Hallingdal,Norway and is buried in West Norway Lake Cemetery near New London, Mn.
My great grandma was his 2nd wife, and her name was Gunhild. They had a son Ole, who changed his last name to Nelson (Nels'son)because there was the older son Ole. Kolbjorn was also from the 1st marriage. What was their Mom's name? The two brothers Ole, were known as big Ole and little Ole. GO FIGURE! Gunhild died when Great grandpa Ole was an infant, possibly childbirth. Nels then married the 3rd time to Anna. They had 9 kids, one whom was named after my grandma Gunhild.
Ole Nelson was my great grandfather. He married Joran Pladsen, and their daughter Christine(Ole)Lien, was my grandma.
Thanks so much for the info! I hope this additional info is helpful to you also. It's fun to chat with new family.
Gloria Wyatt
Red Wing, Mn.
Marit was born July, 1848 and had a child with Nils Nilsen named Anton. He was born Sept. 1877. She married Ole Olsen Hildehaug Gjermundsplassen and had fours sons. Ole Andrew (1891), Thorvald (1887), Gunvald (1889) and Martin. Her husband Ole and son Martin died and she along with the four boys immigrated to the US and on to Canada and then back to the US. My connection is Anton and Nils Nilsen. I have been looking for this family for years and finally found them. They immigrated as Olsen and changed their name to Braaten. I would be happy to share what I have if anyone is interested. My Anton as far as I can tell never married and did not have children - the end of the line for me.

My great grandfather's name is Rolf Norman Braaten Christiansen. He came from Norway to Bolivia where he married my great grandmother Emilia Guayacha. They had two daughters Chela Braaten who now lives in Chile and my aunt Gaby Braaten who lives in the US, somewhere in California. I would like to know about my family in normay. My great grandfather passed away when I was a baby so I don't know about his family, I just have some old photos and another relative of his was Thorlief Braaten or Christiansen, I'm not sure. So if anyone is related, Hi!! You have family in Panama and Chile!

I have a scan of a photo of Jacob and Caroline(Braaten) Olson with a group of their contemporaries. I believe they may be Carolines siblings and their spouses seeing as her brothers sent for her to come to Hayward. Is there a way I can e-mail the scan to you to see if you would be able to identify any of people in it?

Ole Olsen Braaten, Colorado

Doing research for the local museum in Durango Colorado. We have a grave in Hesperus Cemetery - Ole Olsen Braaten (1830 - 1916). Can find out little more. He may have been known locally as "Gus". He may have been related to a Fred Olsen, born Colorado 1885 and living north of Durango in 1900. He may have been the husband of an Alice Strand, who was listed as his wife on a 1908 Colorado Civil War pension application for Ole Olsen. Any info appreciated.

Have you had any luck with your Braatens yet? I am looking for a Charles A. Brighton who left Bergen, Norway Spring of 1861 traveling first to Quebec, Montreal then Madison, Wis. to his Uncle Ole Brighton's place. I have information on my Charles Brighton *after* 1861, but not much before. I have not been able to sort out what his Norwegian name was. Brighton is most likely ~not~ it! LOL. Have statement saying his father was also Ole Brighton, a sea captain and mom was Sigree. Uncle Ole was the only relative he had in the States and did not marry that we know of, dying sometime 1861-64. His pension application didn't mention any siblings, but I have always wondered if there were any. Do you know much about Braatens in Norway?

I'm also looking at these variants; Britzein, Brixien, Broughton, Broten, and Bryten. If you find anything-give me a shout.

My Charles married Charity E. Dun in 1875 in Texas.

My great, great grandfather came from Norway and settled in Grand Forks ND. I do not know much about him and his wife Betsey except they had several children: Sever, Henry (my great grandfather), his twin brother Bernie (Bernhard), Edward, Charles (Carl). I know there were a few more, I believe a total of 8 children. My great grandfather was married to Stella G. Guer in Everett WA and lived in Chelan until they died. I know that Henry is buried in a small cemetary closeby. However, I am looking to see if anyone else is related to Peder Braaten and could give me a clue as to where they lived, etc.

Re: Brentebraaten-braaten, broten

If you didnt figure yet, and yes Im aware it is 4 years ago, but here goes anyway:
The name "brentebraaten" comes from the norwegian word " brente " and " bråten ", "Brente" is comes from the word "å brenne" which translates to" to burn ". "Brente" will then translate to something as " burned ". "bråten" comes from the word "bråte" and translates to "lots of, heaps of". But "Bråten" means something totally different. "Bråtebrenning" is the burning off of withered grass and leaves in the spring. A "bråte" is therefore lots of and heaps of withered grass and leaves. So, in english Brentebråten spells out: Burning heaps of withered grass and leaves. At this point you probably giggle at the stupid things people in the past named themselves but there is more. Brentebråten is actually the name on a very old farm in Eastern Norway. Or was. It burnt down some years ago. Maybe it was its purpose? :P
