In the Soulanges registry, the parents of Joseph Lecompte who married Sophie Lucie Brabant Feb 3 1834 in St-Polycarpe, Soulanges, Québec, are listed as Jean-Baptiste Lecompte and Josèphte Martin.

Does anyone know of the existence of the parents marriage? or was this an error in transcription? Should the father actually be Pierre Lecompte...and...Joseph married twice (first to Catherine Sedilot and then Sophie Brabant?) I would appreciate any information that may be offered!!!

As well, does anyone know of Sophie Brabant also being referred to as Sophie Brisbois, and can proof be supplied?

Thank you,
Denise

I have a sample of Brabants on the GRO Births. 1902 Leonard Arthur born Setp Qtr 1902 at Wandsworth, central London area. 1846 Dec Qtr William Brabent and 1849 Louisa Brabant both born at Wandsworth. There could be many more records between these dates if Wandsworth is your family's usual residence before Chingford. Are they linked to my Gloucester family? Could be.

I have found 2 more Leonards which brings the total to 3 in the LONDON area 1902-1911, and a May 1903. All Hackney except the first Leonard at Wandsworth. The Leonard born 1911 has mother's surname Dare. If May wasn't her proper name then the only possible alternative is an Emmeline in 1916 who had at least one brother Herbert 1912 so they may be a different family. Difficulty is that mother's name was only given from 1911. Haven't checked pre 1902 or post 1917. What access do you have to search bdm?
Claire

If your family are descended from the Gloucester Brabants their father could be either Augustus Leonard b 1871June Quarter Islington / London; Richard T b abt 1870 London, Middlesex; or Walter Edward b 1865 London, Middlesex [1881 Census] Fa Richard BRABANT and Spouse Mother Maria RANKIN. OR maybe from BRABANT Frederick Thomas b Hackney Mar Quarter 1883 who is probably a son of one of these gentlemen. Claire

Re: Brabant in New Zealand

Thanks Aileen for the response.

I don't feel that there is any relationship between our branches in New Zealand... but as I know only my grandfather's name and have some recollection of the names of two sisters (or maybe they were his cousins), I don't therefore have much to go on. There has been a lot of divorce and distaste on my father's side of the family and my parents divorced when I was a child. I am not very close to the Brabants. But this does not allay my curiosity and they were a strong family that made a lasting impression on me as a child.

What I find fascinating is that, piecing together the few snippets of history I can recall, I think Harry Brabant, postal clerk at Waitara, committed suicide in the late 1920s and his wife, Gwen Brabant seemed to have taken up a teaching position at Maraekakaho School, on the Ngaruroa River. The photos of Alan Brabant, my father, that I recall seeing, were of him as a young boy say 7 years old in what was probably the start of the 1930s. Gwen may have taught there for many years. It may be a coincidence, but is there any family recollection at your end of a Gwen Brabant meeting anyone in you family in Napier or Hastings.

Thanks Claire Clark
Hi Sue, Our Brabant line is English since pre 1500. The family spread from Gloucester to Canada, Sydney Aust and Taranaki, New Zealand. Earliest arrival in England from Belgium / Holland / France is perhaps well before 1400s. So can't help with your specific enquiry. But does your Brabant connection involve living descendants in NSW bearing the surname? There are a few in the telephone listings and I am interested in any information on NSW Brabant lineages. Through these enquiries I am now in touch with one NSW gentleman with Eurpopean Brabant connections. Do you want to follow up? Claire
My suggestion would be to go to the library and check the Directory. It is published every year. There is a necrology in the back of it with all the priests who died since the last printing. You might have to go to a chancery office. They should have copies of every year's Directory. A library might not keep them back very far.
Thank you for your message. We have found May, born 1903 and Leonard born 1903 - father and mother are registered at Richard and Emma Maria Dare]. I think they must have moved to Chingford in the 1930-40s, perhaps to escape the bombing during the war. Certainly when May was married to William Ernest Knight in the mid 30's her family lived in Chingford.

Su

If the mother was born in 1752 she could have had children easily until 1792 and even until abt.1800... was not uncommon amongs French-Canadians.

For the son to be born in 1792 (Augustin) and be married sometime before 1821... gives him less than 29 at time of marriage.

What is needed is to find Augustin Brabant's marriage... was he married in Quebec ?
