Hi, Gail,

I'm not sure why the email address didn't work, but I forwarded your letter onto my grandma (Helen Thomas), along with your email address. My email address is iblehs@one488.com. So glad to connect with you and learn more about the family!

Shelbi

Hi Shelbi,

I wrote to you and sent to your sons email adress but it could not be delivered.
It's exciting to know that your grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister. I had the date wrong when the family came through Ellis IsLand as it was 1916. Anton and Marie had 7 children. The oldest was Mary, then Katherine, Joseph, Tony, James, Frank (my father who died in 1988) and Marshall who was the only one born in the states. They are all gone.
Some of their offspring are in Jersey and some scattered. I have lived in North Carolina many years in Mooresville just north of Charlotte.
Alot of the names you have mentioned I am not familiar with but I do know my grandmother had a sister named Helen that had moved to the states. Would that be Helen Shemanek?
Have you ever heard the story that our grandparents mother had drown in the river Morava when she crossed to get fire wood in the Winter and that she was pregnant at the time with her ninth child. Aunt Katherine had shared that with me. So sad.

My email is gailmclean@bellsouth.net .

It has been great to find this connection.

Thanks, Gail

Hi, Gail,

Great to hear from you! I'm Shelbi, but the following is a reply to your query from my grandma, Helen Thomas:

When I was about 5 or 6 years old, my father drove from our farm in Ithaca, N.Y. to Dover, N.J. His name was Anton Brablc, oldest child of Katerina {Popelka} and nephew of Anton Popelka. My mother went with us. Her maiden name was Katarina Stephanek and my sister, Emelia, who was about 17 at that time, also went with us. We visited Anton Popelka and his family, I remember there were several big boys, You must be the daughter of one of
these?

We also visited Joe Shamanek, Carrie and Mildred, Joe being a cousin of Dad's. Incidently, I would like to know if Joe's mother, Helen Shamanek was a real sister or a half sister of Katerina and Anton Popelka? Another family we visited was Katie Cusack and her family who was also related.

We then went to Boonton and visited my mother's relatives, her uncle, last name Marhefka, his wife, daughters, Julia, Josie (I believe) and Anna. Also, Margaret Bednar who was Julia's daughter and who was about my age.

Mother and Dad met in Boonton sometime after they came to the U.S. around l905 or 1906. Dad was always active in the Sokol's. After they married in 1910, they left N,J, to seek work in Detroit. They had four children, Mary born in 1911, Emelia (1912), Joseph (1914) and me - Helen {1923). I am the only one still living but there were 23 grandchildren
and many great grandchildren, only one boy with the name of Christopher Brablc.

A bit more information: My sister, Mary, who studied to be a nurse back in the l930's, spent a few months of training in New York City. While she was there she visited Helen Shamanek and became acquainted with Marie and Louie Schwarz, Helen (was that her sister's name?} John and Alice. She also met one of your uncles or your father. Marie and Louie visited us a number of times up in Ithaca and so did Joe and Carrie. Mildred and I were quite close back in the 1940's but I have lost track of her since she move to Alberqueric.

There is no more family living in Ithaca. I moved to Florida in 1979 and two years ago i moved to Alabama to live with Shelbi's father. My son's e-mail address is jeffjamesthomas@hotmail.com.

So happy that you contacted us.

So interesting!

My grandfathers name was Anton Popelka and he lived in Dover NJ. He had a sister Katerina. He died in 1954. He and all of their children except one were born in Uhersky Ostroh. They came through Ellis Island in 1919 and made their home in Dover NJ. His wife was Maria (née) Moravek. We know both grandparents left large families in their homeland and it would be great to connect with some.

Gail Popelka McLea

Hello! My great grandmother is Emily Smrt and I believe she was the daughter of Bessie Brabec. I found this from a 1930 census: Emily E Smrt b.1918 or 1919
Residence (1930):
BERWYN CITY
COOK, Illinois
Family Unit
Bessie B Brabec(43), James Brabec(42), Emily E Smrt(11)

I don't know if this helps you out at all, or if this is even the same Bessie you are looking for information about. I am looking for information about Bessie and Emily's father is any of you have any information about them.

Hi!!!

My greatgreatgrand father was Jan (John) Brabecz from Stetkowitz (Štetkovice) near Prague in Czech republic. He was born 1839 and died 1898 in Presov now in Slovak republic. He married Terez Beday from Kosice born in 1856, Slovak republic and had so far I know (but I´m just in the beginning) one child Elisabeth Ann Brabecz. He died on 22 march 1898 in Prešov, Slovakia and was gardener.

I´m just starting my research regarding the Brabecz family. Brabecz and Brabec is the same.

I would appreciate any info about relatives.

Take care

Gabriela

I would be very interested in the photos of Anthony Brablc (Brabec) and their children. Our family roots are at Morava as well, and the tradition says, there was a mistake made in the surname http://brablc.com/?doc=surname . I tried to build a tree from known information on my site http://brablc.com/?doc=tree (far from perfect).

Hi, thanks for responding to my query. In our lineage Jacob Coufal married Josefa Brabec in Moravia. They had a child, girl, named Frantiska who married Jan Vyhlidal. Frantiska arrived in the U.S. in 1872-1875 at the age of 40 and came in through Baltimore.
She and Frank had ten children and one daughter,Mary (Marie) Vyhlidal (born in Slavetice, Moravia), married Anton Stuchlik Feb. 13, 1877 in Schuyler, Nebraska. Anton Stuchlik was my great, great grandfather. Martin Stuchlik was Tomas Stuchlik's (my great, great, great, grandfather) son and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 60. Martin was born in Petruvky #7, Moravia.
Tomas was born Bruenn, Maehren Kroenlande, Austria in 1765 and married Marianna Cech in Cechtin, Moravia; she was born in Dolni Vilemovice, Moravia, 30th of July, 1813. Tomas had at least one daughter who stayed in the old country and married a Wotawa. I would like to find any relative connected through this link and any information on Tomas Stuchlik's relatives in the old country. My relatives all settled in southeastern Nebraska, David City, Prague, Bruno, Schuyler, Plasi, etc.

I don't believe we are related to any of your Brabecs or Poplekas; however, you never know.

BTW my name is Karyn and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have never heard any of these names, but our Brabecs could be related, as mine are also from Moravia.

Anton and Katerina (POPELKA) BRABLC (originally BRABEC) were from Uhersky Ostroh, Morava, Czechoslovakia. They had 10 children, which I have a picture of, and Anton (Anthony) was the oldest. He went to America.

Of the other children, one girl married a Russian soldier and went to Russia; one girl immigrated to South America (Brazil?); one girl lived in Vienna, Austria; and one girl lived in their hometown and took care of her mother before her death.

Anton Brablc came to America to visit. He visited his son, Anthony, and family in Prince George County, Virginia, sometime around 1912-1914. He returned to Czechoslovakia. He died during the Second World War of a stroke.

Katerina lived into her 80s and died in the 1950s, approximately a year before her son, Anthony, died. Katerina had a brother, Tony POPELKA, who lived in Dover, New Jersey. Let me know if you have any connections with these families.

Thanks!

I am a decendant of the Brabec family...Anton Brabec in OHIO was the brother of my grandmother, Lillian Brabec Higgins-Fridz-Francis. I don't know if you are related to me with the info of the state you posted, but I think she was one of 8 brothers & sisters...I have all the info at home...but found this msg board at work...

Ann Velek & Thomas Brabec was her Parents (if I remember correctly)...all of the girls lived to be almost 100, my grandmother lived to be 102.
Lavena
