I have a copy of “George W. Brackenridge, Maverick Philanthropist”, by Marilyn M. Sibley, which I would like to get back in the hands of family. The copyright 1973 book contains a lot of genealogy information, including about his parents John Adams and Isabella (McCullough) Brackenridge of Warrick Co., Indiana – his grandparents John and Eleanor (White) Brackenridge – and G-grandfather Robert Brackenridge, murdered by Indians in Huntingdon Co., PA. Please email me at margerice@prodigy.net.

I know for certain that Hugh Henry Brackenridge had a son named Alexander, born in 1792, and died in 1870. He was married to Mary Porter and had at least 4 children that I know of. Do a search on the internet with his name, all sorts of stuff comes up.

Well I know it has been some time since this was posted but I would really like some information on this family. My husband is a descendant of Col. Matthew Clark and Isabella Brackenridge, in fact his name is Matthew Clark as well! Up until recently, I was stuck on the Brackenridge line, the only thing I knew was that her father's name was John. There is much information on the internet about Hugh Henry as he was an author, a Judge, as well as a Revolutinary war veteran serving under Washington. He also went to Princeton University. I am sure by now you have found all of this information out, but if you are still out there, if you could post any information on Isabella and Matthew that would be great!

Also, from what I have read on the internet, Hugh Henry's son Henry Marie was also a very prominent person. There is a archive of the Brackenridge letters to or from Henry which include correspondence from notable people, including his John Cabell Breckinridge, who, as he states, was the grandson of Hugh Henry's brother. Another letter from Robert Jefferson Breckinridge stating the common origin of both their families.

Here is a link to those letters:

http://digital.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/f/findaid/findaid-id...

I have other information about the descendants of Hugh Henry if you need it...the internet is a wonderful thing!

Joseph and Mary had a son Robert (my gg grandfather) born 24 Sep 1818 in Brookville and died 27 Feb 1873 in Ft Wayne, IN. I don't know of any other children but Robert's family is in my public tree "Brearley Mitchell" on ancestry. By the way, I believe Joseph's father was Samuel Brackenridge of Springfield Twp, Bucks County, PA died about 1799.

I do have some correspondence from BTG to his wife while he was in Kandahar and can copy them for you if they are of interest.

David Brakenridge also was a Medical doctor in India for a while, and met Anna Love Blake, recently widowed, on her voyage back to England.

Cheers
Barry Price

When I reached the "Ask Jeeves"site, I typed in "Alexander Brackenridge of PA" then Search. When the screen came up, I scrolled down to the bottom. When you look at the numbers, you'll notice the "1" is highlighted. Click on the the 2. When the next screen comes up, scroll down to "BRACKENRIDGE FAMILY INFO". Click on that. Scroll down and you will see Cemetery Record. You might find this interesting.
Just got home from work. I'll probably be looking at the site later.

Your cuz?
Pat

Hello,

For a hobby, I study colonial and pioneer Breckenridge roots. I have been studying your Brackenridge family for some time now. Could you send me a transcript of his obituary? I know that he died in 1965. Is there anything about your Brackenridges in America that you are wondering about? I might be able to help you.

Not too much time has passed, but I'm afraid that while I've continued to research the Breckenridge/Brackenridge part of my family, I've yet to come across any Gavin Breckenridge. However, I have many a William Breckenridge in my tree! Happy searching.
Edie

My great grandfather, Gavin Brackenridge came to the United States from his birthplace in Ayreshire. I believe the year was circa 1850 or earlier. My grandfather John Crosby Brackenridge was born in 1856 in Tom's River, New Jersey and died in 1948. I visited the family plot in Ayreshire many years ago ( I am 60) wherein I saw that Brackenridge was spelled in many different ways.

There is/was an Algernon and/or William Brackenridge, cousin to my father, and a Margaret Brackenridge, William's sister living in or around Pasadena California.

I would enjoy some further exploration if too much time has not passed.
Hello Barry,

This may be stuff you already know, but thought I'd pipe in with it anyway, if you'll forgive me.

Surgeon-Major Giraud wasn't at Kabul in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War, he was stationed at Kandahar in the south. He was in medical charge of the 7th Fusiliers and was present during Ayub Khan's siege of Kandahar, the sortie to Deh Khoja, and the battle of Kandahar (1880). He received the Afghan War medal with a clasp for Kandahar. The 7th Fusiliers were at Kandahar from 26th April 1880 - 18th April 1881.

Also: Baltic Expedition 1855, Indian Mutiny 1858-9, China 1860, Shanghai 1862, Egypt (Sanitary Officer 2nd Division), Tel-el-Kebir - all as you know.

With best regards -
Garen.
www.angloafghanwar.info

Hon. Hugh Henry Brackenridge of York County, PA

Hon. Hugh Henry Brackenridge

Mr. Brackenridge emigrated when but a child, with his parents, to America from Scotland. They settled within the present area of Peach Bottom Township. His early education was obtained in the schools of the first settlers in the region. He afterward entered Princeton College, where he graduated in 1771; studied theology, was licensed in the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, and served in the American Army as chaplin during the Revolution. He relinquished the ministry, was admitted to the bar, and about the time of the closing of the war removed to the western part of Pennsylvania. In the legal profession he soon gained prominence and distinction, and won a high reputation as a scholar, lawyer and jurist. In 1800 he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
Judge Brackenridge’s opinions while on the supreme bench were original, and are
remarkable for their keen analysis of the case before the court and for their humor. This last faculty he possessed in a high degree. His book, called “Modern Chivalry, or the Adventures of Capt. Farrago,” is a satire after the order of Hudibras, in which the captain and his man Dennis wander, like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, through the world in quest of adventure. The book presents a fair picture of the state of society at the time. He judge, with Albert Gallatin and other prominent men, participated in the whisky insurrection, and wrote in vindication of it. He died at Carisle, in 1818.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886.” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

It apears that the Brackenridge's who lived in Va used the spelling above and the ones who remains in West Va used the Brackerich spelling of the name. My husband is FreddieEdward Brackenridge son of Lonnie Lee and Maude Oker Nicely Brackenridge. His Grand Father and Grand Mother were John and Adelia Akers . Lonnie had two sisters Meleta who married a Paul Blake and Leola who married a Henry Lane. He had two brother Aubry and Guy Guy had a son named Gary. Aubrey wife was Peg or Peggy and no children that we know of. The Blake children would be Nacy Paul and John. The Lane children we know two names and they are Ellen and Maleta. John was the son of Roomalo and Sara Eagle Brackenridge/Brackenrich. Roomalo and Sara raised a large family somewhere on or near Keiffer Mountain in either Greenbrier or Nicholas Counties. Some names I know for sure are John--Walter--Nettie--Sam--William, Edward??
William Dunlop Brackenridge

I am seeking information about the family connections of William Dunlop Brackenridge (1810-1893) who, as a nurseryman in Philadelphia in 1841, was hired on an a civilian horticulturalist with the Wilkes Expedition into the Pacific Northwest, the first maritime expedition sponsored by the government. The ships set out in 1841 and returned in 1844, after almost four years at sea. During the overland portion of this Expedition in early October, 1841, William Brackenridge discovered the California Pitcher Plant (Darlingtonia californica) at the base of Castle Crags near Mt. Shasta. He was the first botanist to cross over the slopes of Mt. Shasta and his discovery of a plant new to science was considered the greatest botanical find of the entire four year Wilkes' Expedition. Brackenridge Passage in Puget Sound was named for him.
Returning to Washington, D.C. in 1844, Brackenridge set up a greenhouse. His dried plants became the nucleus of the collection of the Division of Plants of the United States National Museum ( now the Botanical Gardens).
Records show that William and his wife Isobel were members of the F Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. from sometime prior to 1845 until June 25, 1855. Four children were baptized at this church: Agnes Brackenridge (1846), Robert Buist Brackenridge (1847), William D. Brackenridge (1850), and Jane Henderson Brackenridge (1854).
