Martha Bradberry/bury Polk Co., Missouri 1800s

Here's my mystery family: My gggrandmother, Sarah Jane Chadwell was b. Aug 1866 in Brighton, Polk Co., MO. Her brother, William Samuel Chadwell, was b. Dec. 1869 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX, according to his family. (I have no proof of either of these births, if I did, I would know their parents names!) These children had a sister or half-sister, Ida Ann, who was shot by James Gaylor in 1872 in Polk County, MO and the parents were listed as Martha and William Chadwell. I have a marriage certificate from Bolivar for Martha Bradberry and William Chadwell on March 28, 1870, so that is confirmed. William's deposition after Ida was shot states that Martha had Ida before he married her, therefore, she was either from a previous marriage or illegitimate. The other children were also born before this marriage, so I don't know if he was married before, or she was, or they stole some children in the night and passed them off as theirs!
In 1850 the only Bradberry living in Polk County, MO was a 2-year old William Bradberry, living with Reuben and Mary Gaylor, the parents of James Gaylor. There is no sign of Martha and she should have been about 5. It can't be a coincidence that the Gaylor's and Bradberry's are so closely tied, unless they are related somehow. I think this is the connection, but haven't been able to prove it. The father of Mary Gaylor, nee Goldston, had two sisters who married Bradberry's, but I can find no record of children from these marriages. It doesn't mean there were none, it's just hard to find them because they were so long ago!
In the 1860 Census of Polk Co., MO Martha Bradberry was 15, wasn't married and didn't have any kids. She was living with an Adison Low and family as a servant or housekeeper in Polk County. Some distant relatives of mine suggest that she may have married a Rule (Ruhle, Ruhl, Ruyle or a hundred other spellings), I have never found any useful clues along these lines, but it was between census years. The Ruyle name also fits with the Gaylor/Goldston family.
I traced William Samuel's side of the family down just so I could find out what story was passed down to his descendants and it is virtually the same. His granddaughter says that the mother, Martha, died fairly young of ovarian cancer or something similar not long after Sarah got married. I know she was alive in 1882, because she gave permission for Sarah to get married to John Bryan in Pleasant Hope. By 1900 there is no one left in Missouri. Sarah ended up in Washington state and William (jr.) moved to Colorado. The father disappeared somewhere along the line.
In the 1880 Census, Martha (Bradberry) Chadwell was living with a John Brown and family, and several other people, some of whom are listed as insane. While there is a story that they all lived in the poorhouse until Sarah Chadwell was 8, that would have been around 1874, not 1880. In 1880, Sarah is living with John Emlet and family, and Samuel (William jr.) is living with Nathaniel Wilson's widow, Sarah Wilson, and family. Sarah Wilson's home is where the marriage of Sarah Chadwell and John Bryan took place.

I would appreciate ANY leads with this. I have been searching for years!
Sorry Rudy - at this time none at all. Don't even know that she did emigrate - she has just vanished without trace. She was ' a lady in disgrace' having a child out of wedlock. She was born and brought up on one of the family estates inthe UK - the de Legh family. Her son was born in 1860 and on the 1861 UK census she has been moved to work as a kitchen maid on a farm about 10 miles away that also belonged to the de Legh family. When I look in the 1871 census there is no sign of her in her maiden name. She is not registered as dead and can find no trace of her marrying. You would not believe how many Elizabeth Bradbury's got married inthe UK between 1861 and 1871!! Emigration is my next step. Please don't waste your time on this - but if an Elizabeth pops up in your family somewhere - she was born in 1836 in High Legh, Cheshire - please think of me. Thanks for the emails - Christine

Hi Christine,

Sorry I didn't get a chance to answer earlier. I don't
monitor the message as frequently as I should.

My English ancestor is a Robert Bradbury b. cir 1400 and the
immigrant Thomas came over in 1634. Now between these two I have a list of Bradburys who should have had emmigrants to the US but haven't found any. There were two Thomas lines from immigrants. My line the New England line is by far the largest. Another Thomas came into MD about 1700 and of course there were later immigrants.

Thanks for the note. Would be interested in any comments.

Rudy Bradbury rudolph.bradbury@gmail.com

John's grandfather was Thomas. John and Lydia hit a rough economic patch and lived with extended family members while getting back on their feet and into farming near Hagerstown. They are buried in the Salem Baptist Cemetary between Hagerstown and Richmond. Hope this is helpful.

Hi Dave, Thanks for contacting me.

The Bradburys are a bit of a mystery. I haven't managed to gain any further information. We believe that William Bradbury's birth was never registered, his later "Marriage" to Bessie Dunn never actualy took place because of this but they lived together as a married couple with Bessie changing her surname to Bradbury. They went on to live in Croydon where my line remained until recently. I guess it is possible that if one of the children we not registered then some if not all of them were not registered.

From a family bible I have Joseph Bradbury and Eliza Strong and his parents. I suspect that the Bradbury family came to Ohio at about the same time as the Joel Phelps Higley family. But would like to confirm this and get any ancestors that anyone can help with.
He and Mary had 3 children. I would like to have information on daughter,Nevada Bell Bradbury Lark and son, Joel Phelps Higley Bradbury and their children.
Hi Peter

My family are Bradbury but from South Lancashire and can be traced there to 18th century at least. The name is very common there.

My Y-DNA comes from a different surname. We have a notably Scandic sounding name and links to the Norse settlement in the Wirral. I would be very interested in learning about the R1a haplogroup testing. Where did you get this done?

I noticed your post. I am descended from Thomas and Mary. My copy of the 1890 Bradbury Memorial has an intriguing story about Mary being found guilty of being a witch and the blue boar that she allegedly released against a not so friendly acquaintance of Thomas.

My name is David Kent Bradbury and am 61 and live in Greensboro, NC. My father (Kent Fairfield 1913-1970) and grandfather (George Record 1886?-1935) were born and lived in Fort Kent, ME until the mid to late 1930's.

Bradbury R1a haplogroup Pateley Bridge and Leeds

I have just had my Y-DNA tested and I'm R1a - which has possible links with Norse Vikings. I'd be interested to hear if other Bradburys have had theirs tested.

My relatives are from the Leeds area - my Great Grandfather was Joseph Bradbury b.1869 who set up a Pork Butchers business. His Great Grandfather - also a Joseph (also known as Bradberry) was born in Pateley Bridge in around 1780. He was married to Rosamund and had at least 3 children John (b.1806), William (b. 1808) and Betty (b. 1810). John my Gt x3 Grandfather moved to Leeds to work in the steel industry. I have all the recent census data in a spreadsheet if anyone is interested.

Family of Donovan Griffin Leslie and Merle Oyler, late 19th and 20th cent

Seeking information on the children of Donovan Griffin LESLIE (1904-1976) and Merle A. OYLER (1905-1995). Donovan Griffin Leslie is a 3 X great grandson of Alexander NEGLEY (1734-1809) of Pittsburgh and would have been my 4th cousin. I am seeking information on the following individuals as part of a large project to identify the descendants of Alexander Negley.

Both Donovan and Merle were born in Colorado (with Donovan's birth place being Mesa Co., CO). I don't know when they were married (prob. In the early 1920s since their first child, Donovan Earl Leslie, was born on April 11, 1924 in CO. A register report with sources follows at the end of this query.

The five children of Donovan and Merle are whom I need information on:

The first child is Donovan Earl, born in CO in 1924 and died in Covington, Los Angeles Co., Calif. In 1986. He married someone by the name of Pat PARKER, and they had at least one child, Shari Ann Leslie (b. Oct 8 1947 according to the LESLIE—NEGLEY Family history. When and where was Pat Parker born and who were her parents?

Concerning Shari Ann, I was able to find two children in the California Birth Index born to Leslie and Parker couples, but their birth dates are much more recent (Kathy Ann Leslie, b. April 4, 1967 in Los Angeles; and Lynette Shaney Leslie, b. Oct 10 1978 in Alemada Co., Calif.) They could belong to this couple, but . . . ... Where was Shari Ann born? Did she marry and have a family?

The second child is Eleanor Irene Leslie. She is listed in the 1930 census with a probable birth year of 1928 in Colorado. She married someone by the name of Stanley M. BRADBURY (1922-1993) and the had a female child in July, 1948 according to the LESLIE-NEGLEY family history, but we have no name or place. Where was the child of Eleanor and Stanley born? (Finding no Bradbury/Leslie couples in the California Birth index, I assume she was NOT born in Calif.) What is her name? Did she marry and have a family? Did Eleanor and Stanley have any additional children?

The third child, Donna Merle, is listed in the LESLIE-NEGLEY family history as being born on April 6, 1929, BUT she is not listed in the 1930 census and I think her birth year is later. She was reported to have married someone by the name of J. P. TIREY. Based on the 1930 census results for Grand Junction, CO, it seems more likely that the name is actual Paul J. Tirey, Jr., the son of Pleasant J./Paul J. Tirey and Adabelle ??. Donna and J.P./P.J. had a child, Cathy Leann Tirey in December, 1946 (place unknown).

What is Donna Merle's actual birth date and place?

What did/does J.P./P.J. do for a living? Where was Cathy Leann Tirey born? Did she ever marry and have a family? Did Dona and P.J. have any other children?

And then it get worse. The fourth child is Frances Jean Leslie, b. May 20 1934, place unknown, Where was she born? Did she ever marry and have a family? What did/does she do for a living?

The fifth child is Sall Leann Leslie, b. Mar 26, 1940, place unknown. Again, where was she born? Did she ever marry and have a family? What did/does she do for a living?

Willing to share information.

Bill Muller
muller1938@yahoo.com
3 X great grandson of Alexander Negley

Descendants of Donovan Griffin Leslie

Generation No. 1

1. Donovan Griffin7 Leslie (Frank Griffin6, Joseph Newton5, George4, William3, William2, George1)1,2,3,4 was born May 05, 1904 in Glade Park, Mesa, CO5, and died Jul 1976 in Grand Junction, Mesa Co., CO6. He married Merle A. Oyler7,8,9, daughter of Floyd Oyler and Lizzie ??. She was born May 08, 1905 in CO10, and died May 08, 1995 in Palisade, Mesa Co., CO10.

More About Donovan Griffin Leslie:
Occupation: 1930, Dairy stock raiser
Social Security Number: 522-38-9416

More About Merle A. Oyler:
Social Security Number: 511-34-2688

Marriage Notes for Donovan Leslie and Merle Oyler:
Only Donovan Earl and Eleanor Irene are listed with their parents in the 1930 census for Fruita, Mesa Co., CO which suggests that the birth year for Donna Merle should probably be after 1930 (or at least after the 1930 census).

Children of Donovan Leslie and Merle Oyler are:
+	2	i.
Re: Bradburys in Australia

Yes - quite desperately. My grandmother, soon before she died, told my aunt that she had been looked after by a "Grandma Bradley' in Sydney - having been left with her as a sort of foster child. My grandmother's name was Norma Twomey. I think Grandma Bradely lived in Double Bay or that area of Sydney.

It seems 'Grandma Bradley' looked after a number of kids of people with money. My grandmother's mother left, apparently (Elizabeth Twomey) and the father (they were not married) stopped paying for her, so grandma Bradley kept her on, and had her work as a household help.

Norma often took her children to visit Grandma Bradley. Norma married in or near Barmedman/Wyalong and later lived in Campbelltown.

My mother would really like to know what happened.

Cheers
san

Hi,

Benjamin went from ME to NY to OH in 1815 then to IL in 1833. Benjamin's last child listed in the BM was born in 1811 and since Mary's mother Betsy Eaton was born in 1783 this would make her 41 when mary was born using the census data. I have worked a lot with these censuses and they art nototious for errors. If the father was interviewed, what father remembers the birth date of his children?????

Rudy

marriage of Doii Bradbury and Frank Clark, 1935, Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, February 21, 1935:
BRADBURY-CLARK
Announcement was made this week of the marriage of Doii Mae Bradbury and Frank H. Clark, which took place August 1, 1934, at Neosho, Mo., with Rev. J.W. Moore, pastor of the Methodist church of Neosho, performing the ceremony.
These young folks have kept their wedding a secret inasmuch as the bride had a contract to teach school this winter at Clifton Dist. No. 21.
The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bradbury, of Culver. She is one of the county's most popular school teachers. Frank Clark is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rolla M. Clark and has been farming on the home place south of town for some time. However, for several weeks he has been employed at the Gamble Store in Salina and is now preparing to open a new Gamble Agency store at Lincoln, Kansas, probably next month.
Following the wedding last summer the happy couple spent two weeks honeymooning in the Ozarks. They will be at home in Lincoln after May. 1. The many friends of these young folks will wish them much happiness.

Mary was found guilty of being a witch during the Salem Witch trials, but was never killed. If you look up the trial information, they state who it was that said that she either sent a blue boar after them or turned into a blue boar, one or the other, I can't remember off of the top of my head. It sure makes you wonder what was going on...whether they were seeing things because of mold in their rye bread or if they were just mad at Mary and Thomas for some reason (or jealous, possibly).

My ancestors, the Blake line, ended up in West Virginia.

There are TWO different early Bradbury lines, the New England line of Thomas and Mary Perkins and the NJ line of Thomas and Susan Crane 2nd Mary Watkins. I have quite a bit of data on each line and have found no connection between them. It is unfortunate that both lines started with a Thomas and Mary hence some confusion. Contact me for further information.

Rudolph.bradbury@gmail.com

Hi Jeff,

Thomas and Mary Perkins are buried in the Olde Burying grounds in Salisbury, MA. Presently they are flat in the ground and unreadable. I do have pictures taken ten years ago that I can send you but they are in Florida. I plan to leave Saugus, MA at the end of the month and will try to remember to contact you after I arrive but if I don't just drop me a note at (rudolph.bradbury@gmail.com)(

I need some b/m/d and location on Earl Prince B- if you have it.

Regards, Rudy Bradbury
