I am Michael Kelly. This thread is very informative. I just started getting into genealogy.

Terry, have you lived in or around Sparta/Chadwick?

The following are quotes off a document I came across. It has source listings to prove any statements made. I got it from http://pricegen.com/immigrantservant/search/surname.php?lett... under Breedin Edward Virginia 1753

Edward Braden (Surname: Breedin Given Name: Edward Variant Surname Spellings: Breeden, Braden, Breden, Breaden)
Port of Departure - Town: London County: Middlesex Nation: England
Place of Arrival - Colony: Virginia Ship: Whiteing
Year of Indenture: 1753
Place of Indenture - County: Augusta Colony: Virginia
Master - Surname: Anderson Given name: William
Residence - Parish: St. Olave Town/City: Southwark, County: Surrey Nation: England
Spouse - Given name: Elizabeth
Death Information - County: Augusta State: Virginia Date of Death: 1805 Testate: No

"Peter Wilson Coldham, The King's Passengers to Maryland and Virginia (Maryland, 1997) contained an entry for Edward Breedon, under 'Felons transported from London to Virginia by the Whiteing, Capt. The Sessions Rolls (ref: QS2/5/1753 Michaelmas), which include the indictments for the years prior to 1759, gave further information.
Re: My Braden Line

First and I am not saying this O'Braeden is wrong but I have been researching since 1963 and only just last month did I hear one other story of Irish O'Braden .My research has shown all the Braden's in Ireland to be Scotch or English and all kin to a Lord Major George Braden ,an English man. There is no registered Clan in either Ireland nor Scotland ,nor is there a Tartan. All known Braden's have arrived speaking English and none were Catholic ,except for the German Line .Now that said if you can prove other wise I am listing ! The Braden's from Ireland lived in Northern Ireland ,and were what is called Scotch Irish. They lived in the Derry Area mostly in Five Mile Town . They started arriveing in USA around 1850 or a bit latter ,and settled in Penn,W.Virgina.Kent. Tenn. and in the Old Mid West. the patriarch was born in England and had several wives ,living in England , Scotland ,Ireland ,and in the USA. his Irish wife died in Ireland before they came to the USA. General believed they rought some of Nee's kin who adopted the Braden name .Her kin might have been Irish ?? When you look at this group it is very confusing as they arrived in several waves as they got the money to bring them over .Some of the late arrivals were teenagers and could have been his grand kids ,or last few children,or soem of Nee's kin ?
My line appears in Staunton,Agusta Cnty,VA. with the birth of their first Child John in 1860.There appear to have been maybe Five other Braden families in that area also. My guess theyr were Williams rothers and his father.Could also be cousins also. I have 5 William Braden's born in the same area around 1870 with My GGG Grand Father William. three go to GA with my William one to Tenn, other has disapeared. These familis all named their children the same Family names ,making it a bit harder to seperate them. That said after William died in 1893 his wife and son settled his estate in Elbert ,GA. In 1819 his son William and his wife Elizabeth went to Talladaga ,Ala ,with his whole family, with the rest staying in GA ,I guess. They also Vanish.
I know that there were at least two other Branches of Braden's in South Ala,and that they were kin.I show a Richard Braden in St.Clair B. 1836 M. to a Mary Ukn.B.abt 1838.
I have a Patrick H. Braden in Tenn. B. abt 1800 in Giles Cnty. He would have been my Williams older Brother Jacob Braden . Give me a shoult on my E Mail Doug Braden Dbraden67@aol.com
James C. Braden -- born 9 Jan 1808 Ross Co., Ohio

I am looking for information on James C. Braden. He married Jane McClure (1812-1887) and was the father of John R. Braden (my gg grandfather)(1834-1901), William D. Braden (1836-1855), Mary Ellen Braden (1859-?), and Minerva Braden (1846-?). James was born in Ross Co., Ohio (I believe in Rocky Springs) and moved to Yellow Springs, Des Moines Co., Iowa some time before 1856 but probably after 1834. My grandmother thought his father's name began with "R" Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Bessie Morning Braden

Trying to find information on Bessie Morning Walters from Missouri. She was born in July 1892 and her father’s name was James Busker. Around 1913 she married Oliver Braden and had 4 known children Bertha, James W., Floyd and Golda (?) Braden. Oliver died in Oklahoma in 1925. Between 1925 and 1929 she married James A Walters. I can only find records of 2 children she gave birth to with James Walters in 1929. Twin sons named Alvin and Melvin Walters. Alvin died shortly after birth and Melvin died in 1981. Bessie died in Bakersfield, CA in 1941.

James Braden was my mother’s step-father and a real grandfather to my sister and I. He claimed to b half American Indian, Cheyenne I believe.
I have in my collection two pictures of Bessie both family group shots. One was taken shortly before her death in 1941 and another with her family as a child
Any information would help be research my grandfather’s past.
My mother is Mary Melvina Braden who married Darcie Earnest Chrisco. Her ancesters were: Henry Edmond Braden and Ida Elizabeth Wills, Albert B. Braden and Margaret Mae Campbell, John Braden and Arenna Malissa Brummett, James Braden and Elizabeth Unknown and finally Edward Braden and Elizabeth Erwin. I hope this helps you understand my lineage. Until Later, Chris

Thanks very much for your help! I had seen the marriage record to Jane Corzin and wondered if her name had been incorrect one place or the other (Kenneday came from her daughter's death certificate), or if she had been widowed before her marriage to James (although she would have been awfully young). I guess I'll just keep plodding along. I think your theory about brothers of Joseph seems very plausible. Maybe we'll make a connection one of these days.

Re: My Braden Line

Jenny:

No - unfortunately, I have no reference to a James W Braden born about 1801 in my research for Joseph Braden's line. Joseph Braden's children include Nancy (Stacy) born 1794-1799; Catharine (Puckett) born 1796; John born 1794-1799; Patrick Henry born Feb 1800 (possibly the first child of Joseph born in Williamson?); Elizabeth (Stacy) born Dec 1802; Mary (Montgomery, Melton) born about 1807; Joseph P born 1809; Felix G born about 1811; William born abt 1812; and Jacob Grimes born 1814. I currently think the 3 oldest were born in Virginia (1850 census record for Catharine Puckett indicates born about 1796 in VA), before family moved to TN. Then, rest of children were born in Williamson - I think, but not all confirmed. I have found brief references to other "Braden" families in Williamson (and Maury County) in early 1800s...but I don't know the connection to my Joseph Braden. I am wondering if it is possible that 1 or 2 brothers of Joseph Braden may have come to Williamson County also??

In a document titled "Williamson County Tennessee Marriage Records 1800 - 1850" which I found at the Mormon Libary in Utah in June 2005 - there is a reference to a marriage of James Braden to Jane Corzin on Aug 30, 1820. Jane's last name of "Corzin" is different than your info...but this marriage date could work for someone born about 1801. There is also a reference to William Braden marrying Rebecca Hampton on Nov 22, 1820. I don't know who these two Braden men are.

Jim Meagley

Does anyone show any record of Frank Henry Braden (originally spelled (Brieden), b. 1855 in Germany? He was married to Mary Anna Ganzauge. Was living in Rich Hill, Mo. in 1885. Naturalization papers show Atoka, OK, 14 Feb 1901. By 1906 he was in Seb. Co., AR. This is my children's great grandparents and we would like to know more about them , especially any German information about Frank and Mary Anna's parents, etc. Thank you in advance.
Janelle Conley

Jim, my Braden line comes through Rachel Elizabeth Braden (1838-1883, Williamson Co., TN), daughter of James Braden (b. 1801-1802 NC or SC) and Jane Kenneday (b. 1800-1809 NC). Other children of James & Jane are Mary M., Nancy, Jas. M., Thomas J., Bleu? A., and Margaret Malinda Braden. Does this family tie into your line from Williamson Co.?

Thanks!
Jenny Calvin

To Doug Braden:

For the benefits of other Braden researchers also, I have done a lot of work the past 10+ years regarding the descendants of Joseph Braden (1765-1823) who married Elinor "Nellie" Grimes/Grymes and settled in Tennessee in late 1790s (in 1800s, primarily in Williamson, Maury, Giles and McNairy counties). My son-in-law is one of these Braden descendants, via Nashville, TN families. I am interested in the source of your information regarding the parents of Joseph. I am also willing to share my research information for Joseph's line, if you're interested.

Jim Meagley
Buffalo, NY

Hi Chris, I am not sure if there is a connection. I do not have a Roscoe or Arnold Braden in my tree. My great grandfather was Basil Braden born in Greenup County, KY in 1859 died in 1948 in Daviess County, Kentucky. His parents were Sampson Braden and his second wife Nancy Bush. One of his sons, Walter Braden also had a son named Basil.

Sampson Braden had several other children by his first wife and one of them, William Braden had a son also named Basil. Do you know Roscoe Braden's father's name?

If any of this helps let me know.

Linda Braden Gray

I am sorry about your mother's passing back in April, 2011. I have posted photos on the Roscoe Braden family album that Aunt Faye set up about a year ago. Hope all is well with you.
Hello Bob, glad to get your response. Yes it does sound familiar. I recall something about him being a barber and Clara Park was who he married after the marriage ended to Eliza Burgess. I do not know if something happened to Eliza or if they divorced. You may know those details. Clara Park was my dad's mother. She married Wilford Braden in 1930 and they had 3 children. They later divorced and she married Jack Manning. Of the three children, only my dad kept the Braden last name because he was older when his mom remarried. The other children took the Manning last name.

I do not remember a lot about our grandfather Wilford. I believe I only met him a couple of times. I was born in 1961 and he died in 1968. We lived in Florida and only went up that way to see the other relatives in the summer. I remember meeting him once in his house (probably Marble Hill) and in a hospital. I know he was missing a leg and my sister and I believe he lost it in the war but we are going to confirm that. I do recall he seemed like a nice man.

We are just beginning our search for family history. Like your father, my parents did not talk a lot about their early life. However, we are blessed that they are still alive so my sister and I are going to start questioning them and try to fill in some blanks. I'm curious if our fathers ever met. From your earlier post it looks like there was Burgess, your father Carl and sister Harriet (?).

Hopefully I'll learn more details soon and I'll pass them on to you. We do not believe we have any pictures. Unfortunately my parents house burned about 20 years ago and most things were lost.

Here is my information including email address outside of Ancestory.com in case we somehow get disconnected via this site. Thanks again for contacting me and have a great holiday.

Mike Braden
mbraden@cfl.rr.com
407-905-0729

My Braden Line

My Braden line starts with William and Honor Skelton Braden ,I first find them in Staunton,Augusta County,Virginia in 1760with the birth of their son John, they may have been there longer than that ,as I do not have all the kids birthdays. There appeare to have been as many as five different Braden families in this area, and I believe them all to be kin. I have discovered 5 William Braden's born within a few years of each other there. My GGG Grand Father was one of them William born 1770. He had a brother James who married a Margery Hunter who died in Anderson Co. Tenn. and a Brother and a Brother Joseph who Married a Elinor Grymes /Grimes who died in Giles Co. Tenn.He also had a sister who married ,then moved to Kent. to be with some relations and then moved up north to the midwest, again to join family up there. I do not know much about the sister or James but Joseph had kids that moved into Ark and down into Texas .My line William moved into Abbeyville ,SC and then into Laurens SC. and across the border into GA,into now what is Elbert Co.GA were he died in 1803. His oldest son John and his wife probated his will. His son William my GGG Grandfather then latter moved into Talladaga ,Ala in 1819,were he had some relatives in that area. He latter moved to St. Clair ,Ala. were he died in 1839. One of his sons moved to Tenn to join relatives there and several from Tenn joined them in Ala. Williams oldes son John my GG Grand father moved into N.E. Miss. in 1830 to Itawamba Cnty, were he settled along the 20 mile creek and cleared 160 acres called Braden's Branch untill we sold it in 1919.His oldest son William was killed in the Civil warand his wife Elizabeth remarried a Montogemery and moved to Byou Meto ,in Puliski Co.Ark. His son Solomon married and raised a large family there. If you are intrested in more info contact me Dbraden67@aol.com Doug

Thank you for responding to my message. Evidently, we have the same grandfather if Marble Hill, Mo., barber, Clara Park a school teacher means anything to you. This is about all the information that I have. The reason that I started this inquiry is that my sister recently gave me a picture of my grandfather in uniform from World War 1 and I really didn't know anything about him, my dad didn't have much to say about his childhood.
Anyway, thank you again for your response.
Bob Braden

Hello Bob, I'm responding to a very old entry by you so I doubt you will receive this. However, just in case you are still monitoring this thread my grandfather is also Wilford Braden. Wilford Braden later married Clara Park and my father is their son Wilford P.Braden. Burgess line would have been from his first marriage. Hope this helps.

Hello Geoffrey

I got your address from a 2005 post on an ancestry.com bulletin board, so I thought I'd ask a question. I have Bradens in my direct line; my GM was Ruth Braden and her father was Lorenza Green Braden. So Alfred Ernest Braden and his son are both cousins, of course. According to the Green Castle Cemetery information, Thomas J Braden died in September, 1873. If he is the father of Alfred (Sr), I can't see that Alfred was born in 1875. I know his WWI draft registration says he was born in 1875, but I also know that for various reasons, folks fudge on dates. So, to my question: Would you happen to know if Alfred was really born in 1874 or did Hannah remarry?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this. Another cousin and I have been perplexed about this for a couple years.

Fred C Smyth
Whidbey Island, Washington
I am a descendant of Jane Bradin (1878-1930) who married David Robert Wendleton (1873-1947). I have a copy of her death certificate where she list her Mother as Anna E Dalton (or Delton) and her father as J.E. Bradin. I have found very little information on either parent and nothing to lead me to their parents.

I found an 1870 census that puts the bradin family a few houses from the Daltons, but I don't have enough info to validate it.

Glad to hear that Mike. There has been a BRADY project, but we needed one specifically for BRADEN and closer variants. Although it wouldn't surprise me if some BRADENs and BRADYs have a common ancestor.
Hopefully someone out there from our Southern Illinois BRADENs (Hamilton/Saline/Franklin Counties) will participate!

BRADEN Surname DNA Project

A DNA project has been launched for the Braden surname, along with any variations such as Bradeen, Bradon, Breeden, etc. The project uses testing on the male Y chromosome which is passed directly down the paternal line from father to son making it ideal for investigating surname lineages. The testing can be used to uncover, prove, or disprove connections between various Braden lines and to also give clues about the deeper origins of the lineages.

Project participation is open to any direct paternal-line male Braden descendant - i.e., a male whose last name is Braden (or any variation of the surname) or a male whose biological paternal-line ancestry goes back to a Braden but whose last name was changed at some point, such as due to adoption. Even if you are not a direct paternal-line male Braden descendant, you can join the project by sponsoring the testing of a Braden male from your immediate or extended family, such as a brother, son, father, uncle, male cousin, distant male cousin, etc.

Feel free to visit the Braden-Breeden project website for more details:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/braden/

Also, if you are a Braden that has already had Y-DNA testing done at Family Tree DNA, you can log into your account and use the Join Projects link to join the Braden-Breeden project.

Mike
Project Administrator
Braden-Breeden DNA Project
The problem is not about lieing ,its usually about the famous family stories ,or ledgends that are passed down.I spent from 1962 to 1971 working with my fathers youngest rother ,who had 3 PHD's and was a National Parks Historian, and head Ranger of teh Natches Trace Parkway. Our branch was sure ,at least the older ones were ,that our Family was Dutch . When we got to the bottom of it a very old cousin of my Grandfathers was the originator.Because so many of the family were light complected and fair haired and had light colored eyes ,old Aunt Maud told every one we were Dutch!! The fact that no one in the history of the family could speak it ,nor did they ever remember seeing or hearing it spoken ,did not stop them. These are the same people that used the old English System of Namming children ,1st after you dad ,and then down line with his brothers untill you ran out then your mothers dad ,Girls the same way ,so our large Family was loaded with John's Williams,Davids,Georges, Henrys,Perrys,Andrews , Elizabeths,Nancys,Marthas and Sarahs ,with many of them their Middle name was ANNE .Because of this many went by Initials ,or many different Nick names , and are often buried under them .To compecate the matter they often married women with the same name as their mom. We never used Sr. or Junior ,and finding middle names is almost impossible. So many times the info is confused .My GG Grand father had 12 Children ,the first son and the next to last were both William .I have found many of my relatives that really did not even know their parents full real names, and uried them under the name they went by. If you would like more information on the name and my line my E MAil is Dbraden67@aol.com Doug

Hello Doug, sounds like you have done a lot to help out the Braden searches. I don't think saying O'Braden is OH so full of it was the best thing. Every one is trying to search and find the answers. He may be just like a lot of us, we take information that sounds like it matches and runs with it. All I have is a few stories from relatives that sort of matches to someones elses information. I don't see why someone would just make up stuff, at least I hope not. I certainly can't see to what end that creating a family would do for someone. But whatever. Thanks for all your efforts, It added just that much more questions. Just because the family says they came from Ireland doesn't mean like you said that they weren't English born and maybe lived in Ireland. God knows the English invaded the country. I don't think it will ever be truly solved un less someone connects with family in Cork or close by who is doing searches themselves. Number one on my bucket list is going to Ireland. Want to search out Church records and such. Well keep up the good work. Tommi

I am not trying to be rude ,byt when one of you finds were the Braden Name is listed with ny Clan affiliation ,or finds the Clan tarten ,plese send me the links as After 20 years of research I have never found one link to any clan ,be it in Ireland or Scotland. I have found that all Braden's in Ireland go back to a English Lord Army Captain Braden. All the early Braden's I find in Ireland came from Scotland and lived in Protastant ,Ireland ,Near Derry ,in a place called Five Mile Town .There are only so many Ports that allowed the use of Ocean going Ships and when you find a Braden there he is trying to gain passage. The Irish Clan all seems to go to one man who sent hisoldest son to the USA ,and then he helped bring him and his other kids ad some of his next to last wife's kin over. Knee was his Irish wife and she died before they traveled to American .You find this line centered in Penn, and that area, there are many accounts of this family ,they were all English Speaking Protastants !! Soem of the kids went west to Ohio area ,soem to W. Virginia ,Kent, and Tenn. the Original raden's were tow illegimate sons of King James the I king of Scotland and England ,he gave them a name, titles and a coat of arms. the Name Broaden comes from the Galic for the wide part of the Northumberland Valley .All though he officially claimed them and none of the many other ones he had is uknown ,but he did ,but he did not give them ,the right to be in the line of accession .You can find a Lock Braden and a River Braden in Scotland but no Clan affiliation ,nor no Clan Tartan . this Mr. O'Braden is OH full of it.
Tommi,

That was an interesting story about your grandfather meeting a distant relative from Ireland. I increase my ancestry.com membership last year from a regular membership to a world membership in hopes of making contact with somebody in England or Ireland that could help us on on genealogy, but so far no luck.

Terry
