We are distantly related thru the Freeman family.
These five siblings were the children of Cora Freeman. She was the daughter of Calvin Freeman. I actually descend from Calvin's older sister, Elizabeth Freeman. She was my Great Grandmother.

I have tons of Freeman ancestry and a few pictures if you are interested.I have been able to trace the Freeman's back to about 1806, but then hit a brick wall.

Do you have any info/stories about the Freeman family to share? I don't really know much about Calvin and Mary Hill.
I think I heard a story about how Cora's sister, Katherine was accidently killed by setting herself on fire or something like that.

Hi Laura,

Yes, that's the right Edmund, but "Albert" was Bertram.

Yes, I know your line now! I think the lady who compiled the details I can send you (Rosetta) put me on to your grandma and I did write to her years ago. I'm glad she's still around.

I think your uncle Philip is the one who has the grandfather clock - or is that you? William (1817) had it made when he got married, and in one house they lived in East Cowes he had to make a hole in the ceiling to fit it in! It was made by Wilkins in Newport, and an old engraving shows this shop in the High Street. She sent me a photo of the clock but unfortunately the light reflected off it, so it was very difficult to make out any detail. I'd love a good photo if that is at all possible? My mother's family were clockmakers.

I was born in Kent, where 3 of the 4 out of my father's generation ended up, possibly because Edmund's son Bertram had started teaching there; or maybe it was just coincidence. A colleague at that school introduced him to his sister in Northants, which is where they married and lived, but only one offspring stayed there. I now live in Bristol.

The family tree data I have is too much to type out like this but I can send you various printouts so you can get some idea of the sort of information. My email is p.brading@bristol.ac.uk if you would like to send me your address.

Best wishes,

Peter

yes - sorry i misunderstood so Edmund was William's son;

edmund brading 13.6.1849 married eva cheek and was a tutor

They had albert, alfred, florence and daisy

My great aunt pat still lives on the isle of wight but bill brading (my grandpa) moved off the island as he was in the navy during the second world war and then moved to plymouth then retired in scunthorpe where my grandma brading still lives (grandpa died in 1987 i think) but mum moved to london where we now live as does philip brading my uncle and his family

Where do your family now live?

Hi Laura,

Sorry, that one is William (1817)'s brother; my Edmund was born about 1849, I think, and died in Wootton Bridge in 1912 (I think! - I'm a bit rusty on the dates now). He was headmaster of Wootton School (now the Community Centre), but then lived at The Cedars, Station Road (now a pub), and finally at The Lindens - last I heard permission was being sought to demolish it to build about 7 tiny homes and associated garages! William Henry Brading built both of these houses.

Where do you live?

Best wishes,

Peter

Hi,

Yes - i have him on the tree!

Edmund Smith Brading married Fanny
He was baptised on 28.3.1830 at blackwater and died 31.12.1909 at east cowes aged 79
It shows their 9 children's names and births but then that line stops.

I don't have anything online but have hard copies of the tree and other documents + photo of William Henry Brading and Eliza's diamond wedding anniversary in 1925 which was in a paper with lots of the other family members. I'll happily do you photocopys and post them to you if you'd like? Likewise if you do have anything going further back William Brading and Jenny Smith that would be great

Thanks again!

Hi Laura,

Yes, we are indeed related, through William 1817. I am descended from William Henry's younger brother Edmund.

Thanks to the researches of another descendant of WHB, I can take the family line back to the 1480's - so it depends how much detail you would like!

All my files are at home, so I am a bit hazy at the moment as to what information I have got about your line, but I am always interested to know what jobs people did, where they lived, and if there are any photos, etc. I have some photos of William (1817), and of an oil painting of Richard, brother of William (1786).

Have you got your information on a genealogy program? I have Family Tree Maker, but it is not updated to the latest versions I'm afraid.

Best wishes,

Peter

Becky - Thanks so much for your response. I just recently learned of the Brading connection to my Kent family so I know nothing of the Bradings.

I recently read that James Brading was a nephew of Richard Kent, Jr. Richard Kent came to America on the Mary and John in 1633-34. He settled in Newbury, Massachusetts along with others from the Wiltshire, Hampshire areas of England.

Another publication also lists James Brading as an early settler of Newbury, Massachusetts, but I don't know when he arrived -- possibly on the Mary and John but there were other later ships -- the Confidence for one.

I need to know if you have any reference to the Kent surname in your line. You say that William Brading's wife was Helen. Is it possible that her maiden name was Kent?

Since I know nothing about the Bradings -- only the historical article which identifies James and Nathaniel Brading as nephews of Richard Kent, Jr., anything that you could tell me about their mother would be appreciated. I am assuming that the relationship is through her and that she was a Kent.

Thank you for any help you can give me. I've been unsuccessful in finding the ancestors of Richard Kent, Jr., and the identification of James as a nephew does provide me with a lead.

Ruth Kent
eruth@swbell.net

I am only at the beginning of my research into my mother's side of the family. She was born Alice Edith Brading on the Isle Of Wight.(possibly blackwater?) I believer her mother was called Julie or Julia. Mother was born on January 16th, 1907. known sisters of mother, Amy and Sue, I believe there was more, and brothers. She married Arthur Joseph Williams (my father), and moved to Bristol UK where she lived until she died on March 4th 1990. It's possible her mother's maiden name could have been Haynes. Any snippet of info. would be interesting.

I would be very greatful for any dates on Pierce children.

It may interest you to know that Alexander Dabell ‘married’ Amelia Pierce and subsequently had 8 children. George Mudie Dabell, Frank Pierce Dabell (my Great Grand Father), Harriet A Dabell, Alfred Dabell, Charles Dabell, Walter Henry Dabell, Ernest Dabell, Edith Dabell. This marriage was of course at the time ilegal and consequently all of these children are illegitermate. (my Great Grand Father)

I recently ran across an item identifying William Brading of Godshall, Isle of Wight.,England, as the father of James and Nathaniel Brading.

James and Nathaniel were nephews of Richard Kent, Jr. of Newbury, Massachusetts.

Richard Kent Jr. came to Massachusetts on the Mary and John in 1634 and James Brading testified on Richard's behalf in a lawsuit in December 1656, so he was also in Newbury, Massachusetts at an early date.

Do you know anything about James Brading. (The article says Nathaniel Brading died in Madagascar and notes his will dated Nov 1645.

I'm very interested in their connection to Richard Kent, Jr. -- sounds like their mother was a sister to Richard.

You can contact me at eruth@swbell.net

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dear Mike

Sorry, no, I have no trace of Charles or Edward, but there is a suspicious gap between Helen and William Edward, so there is the possibility of two who died before they were christened, or who may have been born elsewhere and either have not been picked up or were simply not baptised in an 'alien' place(?).

Interestingly, George & Eliza were twins and their mother was one of twins, the other being Ann Vinson (parents were John Vinson and Ann Joliffe, m. 21.3.1773 Newport, IoW)

Best wishes,

Peter

Photo of "a winter day in Rock Creek bottoms - Fay [Bodishbaugh] and WILLIAM BRADING." c1909/10, probably Pulaski Co, AR or Grayville (White/Edwards/Wabash Co), IL, where Fay had family. Fay is husband's father.
Photo = Two boys and a dog, around lake with icy-looking trees. Brading looks to be 12-13 years old. Can scan.
