Hi Lisa - this is your cousin Carolyn Noble again. Thank you so much for the info you shared. You have a lot of information on James & Isadore Rollo's family. Do you happen to know Isadore's parents names including her mother's maiden name? Also James Rollo's heritage. From his marriage regsitration, it looks like his Dad's name is Alexander & his mother's first name was Margaret but there is no maiden name given, only her married name. Was Alexander born in Scotland? I would love those pictures of my cousins. I'm so fortunate in finding you. (Sorry for not answering sooner but my computer was in the shop). All the best Carolyn. My e-mail address is: monarch2051@hotmail.com Thank you again Lisa, you're a life saver.

I am searching for John & Randall Bradt. These 2 lived in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in the 1940's. I found Angus Bradt of Midland, Mi. who I believe is their brother. They are all listed in my grandmother's (Phoebe (Sitzes) Beaujean) obit. I am trying to find the connection to them.

Thanking you ahead of time. Donna

PS I tried to get on the research page but with no success.

Thanks for your email. It is interesting. I am also a direct descendant of Albert Bradt. Judah Bradt b. l786 m. William Waldron who eventually became early pioneers in the Adirondack Mountains (Warren Co. New York)
I have always felt a kinship of sort to the Native Americans and proof or not I've written a third novel titled "Threads An American Tapestry" the focus of the story being a woman living in New York early l700s who is the daughter of a Native American _Lenape and Dutch Settler. I think that after years of research my Mohawk Native American connection comes by the way of the Van Schaicks-long long ago in the l600s.
I have a new website which is www.authorgloriawaldronhukle.com

Hi Gloria- The Mohawk connection is very interesting & I've asked relatives & most of them say," Not that I've found out," but my Dad, whose Mother was Rose Bradt, said there was, although he wasn't aware of when & how. From the information that I have most of the Bradt's (Bratt) (Brott) etc. in North America derived from Albert & Arent Andriessen Bradt, two brothers who sailed from their homeland in Fredickstadt Norway & settled in Albany New York & Schenectady New York. A few of these early pioneers disagreed with the American Revolution & thought they had a better chance of becoming a bigger & stronger nation by being a satellite of the British Empire.( Hindsight huh?) Thus becoming United Empire Loyalsits and transplanting themselves in Upper Canada where land was still being given away and standards were different. NWMP.Northwest Mounted Police stopped the kind of Wild West stuff that our American counterparts had. Thus although our settling of Canada was a lot more peaceful than the USA, it was also much less colorful.

Mina & Sam's daughter ConstanceBradt/(Howe) started some family research years ago and passed it onto her daughter, Judy (Gerald) Calloway/Howe who lives in Taylor Michigan. Judy was in touch with us in 2007 & left us copies of a bunch of notes from her mother. Samuel was born in 1873 & Mina was born in May 1880.Their children were Violet, Wayne & Constance. I hope this helps.

I can't wait to see the pictures. If only my Dad were alive!!! How he would have loved seeing them. My Dad was born in 1899 & he had a vivid memory of his Grandmother. Were you able to trace Gr.Grandpa James' father & mother? I'm still stuck there. My e-mail address is monarch2051@hotmail.com.
Hi Kirk-Isadora Rollo & James Rollo were my great grandparents also. Isadora's maiden name was Wigle & her Dad's name was Theodore; her mother's maiden name was either Conkin or Conklin. I'm afraid I've been stymied at James Rollo & unable to trace back any further. However, we have a first cousin named Randy Rollo(Pam), the son of H.Boyd Rollo who was the son of Howard & Robena Rollo/Agla. He is listed in the phone book & lives in Kingsville Ontario Canada. He has sisters named Sally Beetham(John); Lauire Westlake(Glen);Terry Rollo(Paola). I believe his sisters also live either in Kingsville or maybe Harrow. And Mina & Samuel Bradt's granddaughter lives in Taylor Michigan. Her name is Judy Calloway I believe. Judy's Mom was Constance Bradt/Howe. Alas I don't have any pix of James or Isadora. We have another cousin which I have to reach as she may very well have photos of our grandparents & Aunts & Uncles. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Peg - I'm Carolyn & I have found a census from 1881 in which Catherine Bradt is still alive with 7 children and an 1891 Census in which George is widowed and there are 3 more children added to the list the youngest being George who was 4 at the time.. In 1891 Emma & Charles Phipps are living with Emma's father still, probably helping her Dad with all those children. Now, in a 1901 census there is George the father listed along with one of the twins Albert Edward Bradt & George Jr. only. If you want to ask me any questions feel free. If I'm able to answer them I will. Thank you for bearing with me.

Yes - isn't it wonderful. I too have been able to trace the Bradt's back to the 1500's in Norway. My Grandmother was Rose Bradt. Much of this info was given to me by an American cousin, whose mother was a Howe from Kingsville Ont.Can. Samuel Bradt married another cousin of mine Mina Alzora Rollo. There was a Charles Bradt who was my grandma Rose's brother also. Let me know if you're still interested. I really need to find Catherine Hoover's maiden name & her siblings if possible. Catherine was Rose/Charles & Sam's mother. They lived on Pelee Island Ont.Can.

Hello Barbara,

Very nice to hear from you and receive the information about Edward and his wife. I found Joseph Parker & two of his boys baptisms in the book "People of the Town of Bethlehem", pg.16, 1982-Bethlehem Historical Society. I'm only guessing that Joseph was the father of my John Parker because John, as well as the next 3 generations, lived in Bethlehem or Coeymans all their lives. John Parker married Sylvia Mosher 7/4/1815 at the First Dutch Reformed Church in Albany, NY. John was in the War of 1812 in Col. Jonathan Varian's regiment for roughly 3 months. He was awarded 160 acres for his service. John died in 1858, as Sylvia is made Administratrix of his estate. John & Sylvia are mentioned on the death certificate of their son, Robert Parker, my second great grandfather.

If you would like to share more about these families I would love to be in touch.
I always thought that the Bradt House with the Marker on it on the River Road in Schenectady had been inthe Schermerhorn family for many years...At least it was way back into the 1950's. The people who are now in the house can't have been there long. That house used to be opened to view but I don't think it is anymore. Call the Historic Dept
in Schenectady, they can tell you. I met a builder over there
in that area several months ago and he told me that when he is surveying all of that land, that it belonged to Bradts. I knew there were Bradts up on the Mariaville Road...but not in that area. .

According to Bradt research & published book "Decendants of Albert and Arent Andriessen Bradt by Cynthia Brott Biasca, Henington Publishing Co, Wolfe City, Texas, Copyright 1990, here is info on STORM BRADT & SOPHIA UZILE:
Storm Bradt bp 12 Jan 1690 [DRC of Albany,NY] s/o Jan Albertse Bradt (b.ca 1648) & Maria Moockers Post.

Jan Albertse Bradt s/o Albert Andriessen Bradt who came from Fredrikstad, Norway & his wife was Annatie Barents Van Rottmer of Norway.
Albert Andriessen's 3rd child was born during passage to American & is named STORM VAN DER ZEE (of the sea). His descendants carry the surname of Vanderzee. Many decendants of his other children (surname, Bradt,Brodt,Brott)gave first names of 'Storm' to their sons.

Storm Bradt (10th child of Jan & Maria [Post] Bradt & Sophia Uziele had 9 known children:
1. Dorothea Van Alsteyne 2/15/1766 Alb DRC.

According to Bradt research "Isaac Falkenburg was the illegitimate child of Maria Bradt and Isaac Falkenburg. At his baptism at Schoharie Lutheran Church, the witnesses were the child's grandparents, Isaac and Lydia Falkenburg. Isaac, the father of the child married Jannetje Clement in 1737. Why he did not marry Maria is unknnown, especially strange since the child used his father's last name, not his mother's" {Descendants of Albert and Arent Adrriessen Bradt, pg 57}

Barbara
Hi there Gregory:

I am going to try to cut and paste the info I have on UEL. It is quite fascinating. Please let me know if you receive it. Do you live in Canada?

Happy reading.

Peg.

Our ancestors were United Empire Loyalist. They were granted land near the Niagara region for there Loyalty to the Empire. Our ancestors the Bradt’s and the Van Alstyne’s (from the Netherlands) were but a few families that fought for the cause. Without there Loyalty there would be no Canada.

United Empire Loyalist.
Over two hundred years ago the American Revolution shattered the British Empire in North America. The conflict was rooted in British attempts to assert economic control in her American colonies after her costly victory over the French during the Seven Years War. When protests and riots met the British attempts to impose taxes on the colonists, the British responded with political and military force. Out of the struggle between the Thirteen Colonies and their mother country emerged two nations: the United States and what would later become Canada.
Not all of the inhabitants of the Thirteen Colonies opposed Britain. The United Empire Loyalists were those colonists who remained faithful to the Crown and wished to continue living in the New World. Therefore, they left their homes to settle eventually in what remained of British North America.
Who were the Loyalists?
The Loyalists came from every class and walk of life. Some depended on the Crown for their livelihood and status and had considerable wealth and property. Many were farmers and craftsmen. There were clerks and clergymen, lawyers and labourers, solders and slaves, Native Americans, college graduates, and people who could not write their own names. Recent immigrants from Europe also tended to support the Crown.
They had little in common but their opposition to the revolution. Their reasons for becoming Loyalists were as varied as their backgrounds. Some had strong ties with Britain: others had simply supported what turned out to be the losing side. Local incidents, fear of change, self-interest, political principles, emotional bonds - one or any combination of these influenced their decision to remain loyal to the Crown. The common thread that linked these diverse groups was a distrust of too much democracy, which they believed resulted in mob rule and an accompanying breakdown of law and order. The Reverend Mather Byles mused, "Which is better - to be ruled by one tyrant three thousand miles away or by three thousand tyrants one mile away?" Loyalists believed that the British connection guaranteed them a more secure and prosperous life than republicanism would.
Historians estimate that ten to fifteen per cent of the population of the Thirteen Colonies - some 250,000 people opposed the revolution; some passively, others by speaking out, spying, or fighting against the rebels. Approximately 70,000 Loyalists fled the Thirteen Colonies. Of these, roughly 50,000 went to the British North American Colonies of Quebec and Nova Scotia.

UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS'
ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

Those Loyalists who have adhered to the Unity of the Empire, and joined the Royal Standard before the Treaty of Separation in the year 1783, and all their Children and their Descendants by either sex, are to be distinguished by the following Capitals, affixed to their names: U.E. Alluding to their great principle The Unity of the Empire."
To the great granddaughter of Rose Bradt Rollo. My great grandmother Emma Elizabeth Bradt Phipps was a sister to Rose. Emma married Charles Phipps. I have some Bradt pictures, I am not sure if I have any with George and Catherine in them. One of the has written on the back. C. Bradt on Phipps farm, Pelee Island. I think I have a picture of Margaret Bradt with her son too. I will have to look and see. I will phone my sister to see if she has any pictures also.

My father was born and spent his younger years on Pelee. I was on the Island a couple of years ago with my sister. There is a mystery I have not figured out yet. Emma was married first to Charles Phipps, when he died she lived with Charles McNeil. When I was at the cemetery on Pelee I found Emma's gravestone. It had Charles McNeil as her husband. His death date was not filled out. However (I can't remember where in the cemetery) I found a gravestone for Charles McNeil with a death date. I am not sure if Emma is buried with Charles Phipps or Charles McNeil. I was not sure who to ask about that and I was only there for a day and a half, so it remains a mystery to me still.

Anyway if you are interested in the pictures please contact me.

pegs@execulink.com

Peg Phipps-Cooke

Hi - you have the name of your ancestor slightly wrong. Aefje (could be found as Eva) Arentse Bradt married Claes Frederickse Van Patten. Claes is the shortened form of Nicolas. Frederickse is his patronymic, meaning his father's first name was Frederick.

Aefje's father is Arent Andriessen as you stated. Her husband wasn't born in Schenectady in 1641 because Schenectady didn't exist then.

Aefje was said to be 15 yrs old in NOv 1664 so that gives you a good idea of her birth year. The family likely moved to Schenectady circa 1662 and within a few years she md Claes.

In june 1664 Cleas and Isaac Cornelisse Swits leased a farm from Willem Teller for 6 years, including a house, barn, hayberg and 2 parcels of land, plus 8 horses, 10 cattle, 8 pigs. There's more in the list of what was to come with this lease. See Peter Christoph's book "Bradt: A Norwegian Family in America" for a chapter on Aefje and Claes.

Claes died Oct 3, 1728 age 87 yrs 5 mos, Aefje/Eva died Jan 23, 1728 age 78. I have no info on burials etc.

Lorine (http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ )

This may be a long shot but the name of your great aunt, Cora, rang a bell with my wife's Bradt ancestry. Perhaps Cora's mother was Maybell or Mable, born in 1873, died in 1939, married first to Wm. Milton and later to James Smith.
Mabell's brother, Leonard Bradt, 1886- 1967, married Rose
Billings, died 1963, who was a full blooded Mohawk and was the grandmother of my wife. Maybell's parents were Lucinda Eastman and Leander Bradt who was a civil war veteran from the 58th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and both are buried in Manlius Village Cemetery. Contact me if this
information appears to be useful. I have some further information but truthfully am just starting to research this. Whether there were other Mohawk connections I don't know but the Bradts who moved to Ontario would have
certainly had contact with the native Mohawks. Another of Lucinda and Leander's children, Curtis, 1870-1917, married Cora Fox who had a daughter named Marie.

Ann/Johanna Bradt born in NYC in 1714

I am fairly desperate to find the death information of an Ann/Johanna Bradt baptized 3/14/1714, daughter of Issac (Barent + Susannah Meyers) and Dievertie Wessels (Frans+ Tyrntje Jans) and or even better the baptism of John/Jean Mesnard Jr. She was a member of the DRC of NYC and was married there. Jean Sr’s brother was also a member of the same church. Jean Sr. was buried at that church at an unknown time but probably many years later. This is odd because he remarried and lived in Greenwich CT after 1760. We know she was not living in 1750. Jean had remarried in 1747 in New Rochelle. I have had the New Holland Soc look for both and could not find it. However, they were not able to find the marriage in the church records either. This was found by Cynthia Brott Biasca. I also noticed Cynthia did not list a death date for Ann in her book. It is possible they moved away from NYC after they were married. I have seen the record for Ann’s baptism and if I did not know the date I would have missed it. I will not mind paying for this information. I will have the NY B&G look for these records later this year.

Thanks in advance

My great grandmother was Rose Rollo. She was the daughter of George Nelson Bradt and Kathleen Hoover. She married William Rollo. My grandmother was their daughter, Mildred. Her siblings were George, Alfred and Charles Bradt. William Rollo's parents were James and Isadora(nee Young). I guess that makes us related somehow. I live on Pelee Island which is not far from Kingsville. Let me know if you have any other info. Kirk

Dear Mary Bradt:

I am sending this note to inform you that all, yes, all of the Bradt, Bratt, and some of the Brot's are related through two brothers who came over from Norway in the approximate time of 1630 - 1638. The two brothers traveled through the Netherlands and were married there. Then they came by boat to what was then called the "New Amsterdam". The New Amsterdam was in the present State of New York. There is a complete record of all of the Bradt/Bratt/Brot relatives. You should be able to find out where to get these two books from Daniel Bradt in New York. Daniel also prints a bradt/bratt family newsletter. I am not sure how to reach Mr. Bradt, but perhaps someone else who will read this bulletin will know.

Good luck.

Gregory Bradt

Hi Jennifer,

Check out www.bernehistory.org/familyfiles. I am also descended from Storm and Sophia. According to these records Storm Bradt married Sophia Ziele on February 24 1711/1712 at the Reformed Church, in Kingston, Ulster NY. I have used the records from this website as a guide and have been able to verify information from the present back to the 1860's with census records. You have to be very careful when researching Storm Bradt. There are many of them out there. But decendents of the original Storm vanderzee Bradt are typically named Van der Zee as he dropped the Bradt. We are descendent from his brother Jan Albertse Bradt, if these records hold the correct information.
