Re:Ruth Bradway - are you a Harris descendant? I'm just curious. I've had one person try to join the Mayflower Society through Anthony Harris, but she got hung up in New York State trying to get later records after part of the family moved out of NH. The last I knew, she was still hunting!

Bette

Ruth-3 Bradway Harris

"Northup" asked what I knew about Ruth Bradway. She was one of the 7 children of Thomas-2 (William-1) and Mercy ANGELL Bradway/Broadway, of Smithfield RI. Mercy Angell was a gt. granddaughter of Rev. Roger Williams and one of his companions to RI and a fellow "founder," Thomas Angell. Note that, in this time period and into the early 1800s the spellings Broadway and Bradway were BOTH used in records, along with a few other variations. Others in this generation were: Richard b. ca. 1738, (Ruth), Jeremiah/Jeremy b. ca. 1742, William b. ca. 1743, Mary b. ca. 1745, Daniel b. ca. 1747 and Ezekial (nothing found to estimate his birth). Although Thomas and Mercy apparently lived in Smithfield almost all of their lives, none of their 7 children were recorded in the town records, so birth years have all had to be estimated. Ruth was age 94 when she died in 1836 (gs, in Benton Cemetery, Richmond NH), so she was b. ca. 1741/2.

Ruth m'd at Smithfield (this WAS recorded) on 1 Jan 1761 to ANTHONY HARRIS, son of Richard and Lydia (Sprague) Harris, b. 5 Jan 1735, d. Richmond NH 29 Mar 1817, age 81 (bur. Benton Cem). Anthony Harris was a descendant of Richard Warren of the Mayflower, through his mother Lydia-5 Sprague (Anthony-4 Sprague, Elizabeth-3 Bartlett, Mary-2 Warren, Richard-1). In 1989, I compiled an article called "The Harris Twins" (Anthony was a twin to Amity) which can be found in two installments of "The Mayflower Quarterly," (publ. by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants) issues of May and August 1989 (Vol 55, nos 1 and 2). The Harris's were Quakers (Society of Friends).

Apparently soon after their marriage, Ruth and Anthony removed to Richmond NH and the "History of Richmond, Cheshire County, NH" pg. 406 (Bassett, 1884) calls him a "First Settler." He was also one of the 12 men who refused to sign the Oath of Allegience on 30 Aug 1776 because of his Quaker faith. The Harris house in Richmond still exists. Ruth and Anthony had 11 children all probably b. in Richmond (listed in order of birth): Thomas, Mercey, Ama, Lydia, Jeremiah, William Caleb, David, Luke, Linday and Delilah. More on this family can be found in the Richmond History and my article in the "Mayflower Quarterly."

Incidentally, the parents, Thomas and Mercy evetually made their way from Smithfield RI to Woodstock CT, where he died in 1801 age 85 (bur. in Center Cemetery). His widow, Mercy, went to live with one of their sons in Monson MA, where she died in 1802, age 85. She is buried in the earliest section (way in the back) of the Moulton Hill Cemetery in Monson, although her gravestone has been illegible for many years. There is a photograph of it in the "Corbin Collection" at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, microfilms available at various libraries.

Bette Innes Bradway
Sorry, it took me more than a day to get back to you. Quite a number of years ago, the late Firman Bradway (who decended from the NJ Bradways) and I (my husband descends from the RI family) tried to prove or DISprove that the William-3 (William-2, Edward-1) Bradway of NJ, who disappears from NJ records after 1710 was the same William Bradway who was in Portsmouth RI, the earliest record of him there being in 1712. Firman and I each researched "our" end and compared numerous notes with each other. The end result that we could find nothing in either NJ or RI which would connect the two men.

When Y-line DNA tests first became available, we had a private company test Firman and my husband and that indicated that they were NOT genetically related. So, there went that theory - we had finally been able to DISprove it, using DNA. We have tested some other people since then, using FamilyTreeDNA, with the same result - not related.

In spite of this, some descendants are still posting that the William of RI was the son of Edward of NJ. We know that can't be possible because William-2 died in 1710 in Salem Co. NJ leaving a will that names his wife (Patience) and children. He could NOT have been the person who married Comfort Fish in RI and had a son William b. there ca. 1714. This NJ William DID have a son named William and it was that William that Firman and I worked on. He simply disappears from NJ after his father dies and is not found again. The family were Quakers and the Quaker records make no mention of his marriage (in or out of unity), death, disownment or anything.

This is already a fairly long post, so I am going to do another one about Ruth-3 Bradway.

Bette Innes Bradway

Hang tight! I will try to answer you better tomorrow. The short answer is that we did Y-line DNA which indicted that there is NO RELATIONSHIP AT ALL between the NJ Bradways and the Bradway/Broadway family from William of Rhode Island.

Bette

Hi:

I sure hope you're still on this forum! I am descended from Ruth Bradway, (m. Anthony Harris, d. of Thomas b.1715, Providence. I am totally confused about the Williams and Edward that are variously listed as Thomas' father and grandfather and so on. It wasn't until I saw your posts that I realized there are two completely different lines for RI and NJ--except then you suggested that maybe William from NJ went to RI and married Comfort Fish. Now I'm lost! Can you help untangle me?

Thanks very much,

Lesley

Many of the branches of the Bradways descended from Edward Bradway who purchased sight unseen from John Fenwick, the proprietor here in Salem County NJ, are pretty well established and were published in a booklet by James Acton. Also the charts by Firman Bradway show many major branches that many Bradways can use to find their connection. There are, like with many large families, branches that you will not find on these charts, especially those that left Quakerism, which provided many of the sources used by Firman Bradway. If you would like me to check to see if you Iowa line is mentioned just email me directly. You did not give any dates for Zora. beve7358@yahoo.com

Hi, interesting to come across your recent post. I'm sorry I dont' have the information you're looking for however, I just recently came across some family info that links us to an Edward Bradway, a judge in Salem NJ I believe back in the 1600's. He was a distant grandfather of my husband. Does this fit into your tree at all? I have not put together a full tree but Edward links up to my husband's great grandmother, Zora Bradway Campbell who lived in Iowa. I'd love to hear from you. welchs@mchsi.com.

Re: Barbara Anne Bradway 1923 Vermont

Bette Bradway: Thanks so much for your message as it gave me new information and confirmed some of my data.
My mother was Ruth Eva Bradway. She was born on 4/7/1907 at Glens Falls, NY. She died on 4/21/1983 at Ft. Myers, FL.
She left me hardly any information about her family. I have a picture of Max, and Harriet along with Barbara and Virginia. Also, an older picture, perhaps her grandfather. She told me she was 1/4 American Indian, but I have no further information.

I had the information about Barbara Bradway, but do not have her date of death or place.
Regarding Virginia, the information that I have is that she was born in Montpelier and died 11/27/1988 at St. Johnsbury, VT. She married John Bliss Smith on 8/18/1942.

Have a fine holiday season.
Re: Barbara Anne Bradway 1923 Vermont

You didn't give much information to work with, but I found a Barbara A. Bradway in the 1930 census, living with her parents (and sister, Virginia) in Montpelier VT. I have Barbara's date of birth as 23 Dec 1923, which I copied from the VT Vital records in Montpelier in August of 1980. (Virginia's date of birth was 23 Mar 1917, but I think that one came from a family member, now deceased, since I don't have a place of birth for her, OR I failed to note her place of birth).

This Barbara was a daughter of Maxwell John (Max or sometimes M.J.) Bradway and his second wife, Harriet May Maxwell, who married in Montpelier on 6 Dec 1913. Harriet was b. 8 Aug 1885 in either Waitfield or Fayston VT and died 30 Dec 1941 in Montpelier. Max died 28 Jun 1941. (Again, I don't have a place of death, so this date may have have come from family records.)

Max's first wife was Jessie/Jessica Purdle (or Purdie) and they had one child, a daughter Ruth Eva, who was b. about 1908. Family said that Max and Jessie had divorced, but I have no information on that.

Max Bradway was a son of John and his second wife Mary (Smith) Bradway. From family information, I have John b. 11 Aug 1841 and died in 1933. Mary was b. ca. 1844 in Hemingford, Canada and died in 1932. Both are buried in N. Granville, Washington Co. NY. John had married 1) Henrietta McConihe "from Boston," by whom he apparently had 4 children. I was told that John had a lumber business in Ontario, and apparently lived in Canada for a time, then lived in Montpelier. He was probably born in Washington Co. NY. most likely in Fort Ann, but NY State has no vital records that far back.

John was the son of Richard [5] and Lucinda (Green) Bradway. Richard was b. 11 Jun 1805 and d. 2 Nov 1882, in Comstock NY. Lucinda was b. in 1811 and d. 8 Feb 1859, also in Comstock. Both are bur. in the Snow Ridge Cemetery in Comstock.

Richard Bradway was the son of Jeremiah [4] Bradway and his wife Althea (or Althena). Jeremiah was the first of this part of the family to move from Berkshire Co. MA to Washington Co. NY, where he died 22 Aug 1823. His children are named in his will.

Jeremiah [4] Bradway was either the son of Jeremiah [3] Bradway/Broadway, or his brother, Richard [3] Bradway/Broadway. Recent Y-line DNA studies have proven that this line descends from Thomas [2] Bradway/Broadway, William [1] Bradway/Broadway of Portsmouth and Smithfield RI. However, 40 years of research have failed to privide information on which children belonged to Jeremiah and which children belonged to Richard, as neither had any children recorded in Lanesboro MA (Richard had one child recorded in Smithfield RI) and both died without wills or any other documents that specifically name their children. I lean towards Washington Co. NY Jeremiah having been a son of Jeremiah [3], but that is only because Jeremiah [3] sold his Berkshire Co. MA property to "Jeremiah Jr." before moving to Oneida Co. NY.

I hope that this helps! Merry Christmas.

Bette:
I'm so glad that you'll find the information helpful (sorry for the typo or two). I love biographies and sometimes without them you never know where some of the New Englanders settled in the 1800-1830 era. My research, unrelated, has been in Wayne and Medina Counties of Ohio; families from Cortland County New York where there was little or no information and not much in the way of biographies for me! But am happy I could help someone else!
Best wishes....
Jeanette

Jeanette,

Thank you very much for this piece of information! I haven't worked on this branch of the family in quite some time, but your find will be a welcome addition to the information that I have on them.

Hi! I'm not a WEBBER researcher but observed this biographical sketch information in documents received from Medina County Ohio while doing unrelated research.

This information is from the book dated 1881 and entitled History of Medina County and Ohio and found on page 783.

This is strictly a random act of kindness (hopefully) and hopefully you'll find it useful in your research.
I hope to hear that you received this email and find it helpful.
Best wishes in your research.
Jeanette

---------------

Page 783
R.M. WEBBER, farmer; P.O. Hinckley; was born in Hampden Co., Mass., June 9, 1826. He is a son of Richard and Lovina (Bradway) Webber. They were natives of Massachusetts and early residents of Medina Co.; they located in Hinckley Township in 1839 and made it their home until their deaths. His father was a Wesleyan Methodist, and preached a great many funeral sermons; he was a circuit preacher for one year; he afterward united with the Protestant Methodist Church. His death occurred in 1854; his mother died Oct.8, 1877. Our subject's early life was passed upon his father's farm. He was united in marriage Nov. 5, 1848 to Mis Mary hogue, daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Bevarstock)[as spelled] Hogue, who were natives of England, and who settled in Weymouth in 1837; they soon afterward moved to Hinckley Township. He died March, 1861. In 1863, Merrill bought his father's old farm, and worked it several years. In 1870, he purchased the farm where he now resides; he has now, in several tracts, nearly 500 acres of land, all of which he has obtained by his own efforts. His family consists of fourteen children--
Charles M., living in Medina Township;
Maria J. Hoddinott, living in Michigan
Francis C., living in Hinckley Township
Joseph R., living on the old homestead;
Caroline L. Van Deusen, living in Michigan
Minnie L. Fluent, living in Granger Township
Ella J., Lucy A., John A., Elizabeth I., Harriet A., Sarah I., Addie T., Frederick J., deceased. Mr. Webber has been an active worker in the education affairs of the township, and is an esteemed member of the community in which he resides.

If you are still intrested contact me at shirlene@kvnet.org.

your grandmother and my father are half siblings. My father passed away in 1992. He grew up thinking that his father was dead. I don't know exactly when Martin Eisenhart died, but I believe that he lived quite a while after my father was born in 1930. You grandmother was born in Sept 1929 and my father was born out of wed-lock in May 1930. He was raised (as was I) with the sir name Eisenhart.
Hope to hear from you.
Publications 5:4" (1978) on the "Bradway-Stretch-Keasby-Waddington Families" and it shows your lineage.

The Charles Bradway (1853-1902) who married Clara McCrumb was the son of Charles and Rachel (Bradway) Bradway, so you have, at least, a double Bradway line. This Charles, b. 1815 or 1817, married a second wife in 1873 named Lucinda G. Humes. He lived in Iowa.

Bette Innes Bradway

Re: Jeremiah and Richard Bradway - (Ralph Bradway)

I think I have now found your Ralph. Born 11 Apr 1921 in Hampden Co. MA (according to his enlistment record), he enlisted in WW II as Ralph N. Bradway, Jr. (note the designation Junior, which in this time period would indicate he had the same name as his father). He enlisted from Springfield MA on 25 Sep 1842 as a "Warrant Officer" (although his rank was a Private). He had completed four years of high school and been employed in a variety or automotive jobs - automotive electrician, auto mechanic, body repairman, radiator repairman, also motorcycle and tractor mechanic. He was married in 1942, was 67 inches tall and weighed 134 pounds. He died in Pittsfield on 16 Jul 1988 (Cert. # 039989).

The 1930 census of Pittsfield shows that Ralph Bradway was age 8 and the son of Ralph and Lottie (probably Moore) Bradway; he had 2 sisters named Leona (age 10) and Doris (age 4 and a fraction that I cannot read). In 1920, he and Charlotte (both age 24) are enumerated in the household of Douglas and Theresa (?) MOORE - Ralph is their son-in-law, Charlotte is their daughter and 1 month old Leona R. is marked grand-daughter. (Census taken 14 Jan 1920.)

His death certificate should confirm his father and if he was the son of Ralph N. Bradway of Pittsfield, that Ralph was b. 29 Apr 1897 and died in Lanesboro MA in Dec. 1979, the son of Elijah Bradway, formerly of Rensselaer Co. NY.

Please contact me directly at <bbradway@nycap.rr.com> because I need to "talk" with you about some genetic testing we are doing on the NY Bradways.

Bette Bradway
Bradways Broadways, NY and New England

I have collecting information on this family for more than 30 years. I would like to hear from anyone, particularly with Bradway or Broadway ancestry (names are used interchangably)in NY State. It is VERY hard to connect to these people to family in Western MA (Berkshire Co.), CT (Woodstock)and, originally Portsmith Smithfield RI, but every little bit of info helps!

Jenkins, Washington Co. NY

I can't e-mail you directly, because you didn't give me your address and e-mail addresses are NOT shown in forwarded messages. Actually, I have almost nothing on Jenkins in Washington Co. NY, anyway. I only know that Nelly Bradway m. Benajah Jenkins and we found them in the 1825 NY State Census in Fort Ann with 2 males, 2 females; 1 male 18-45, 1 male to vote, 1 m'd female under 45, 1 fem. under 16. They were living near John Jenkins who had a male 18-45, 3 females (2 of whom were under 16) and the male could vote.

I know nothing more about this Jenkins family, other than that they MAY have been related to some Whites in the same area. PhOne of Richard and Lucinda (Green) Bradway's daughters, Phoebe, b. 18 Oct 1831, m. a Jenkins White. This Phoebe was a niece of Nelly (Bradway) Jenkins.

Sorry...
Bette Bradway

Richard [4] Bradway, Schoh. Co. NY

I have copies of two Bradway Bible records which show similar data. The older one was publ, in Copperstown NY in 1834 and begins with "April 13th 1768, Then was born Richard Bradway our Father," followed by April 13th 1775 Then was born Huldah Rouse our mother," followed by entries for the children, etc. No date of marriage is shown for them. Another page of this same Bible shows "John Vanderveer born January 31st 1769 and Mary Sweetman born Nov 20th 1776." I suspect that these two are the parents of Althe(a) Vanderveer.

The second Bible was publ. in Philadealphia in 1848 and begins with the births of Althe and Benoni Bradway, then follows with more of their family. These two Bible were in the possession of Bradway Liddle in Wisc. when we finally located them, sometime prior to 1988. Are we referring to the same Bibles or are yours different? "Deacon B." Bradway is actually Benoni; he was a Deacon in the Baptist Church and was often called "Deacon." I have not seen the obit for Althe(a), so didn't know that she was born in Sharon.

How does your husband's family descend from these people? I have some 70 pages on descendants, although it is printed double spaced, so it's really only about 35 pages.

This Schoharie Co. NY Richard was the son of Richard [3] Bradway/Broadway of Smithfield RI and Lanesboro, Berkshire Co. MA, Thomas [2] Bradway/Broadway (and Mercy Angell) of Smithfield, William [1] Bradway/Broadway (and Comfort Fish) of Portsmouth RI, Providence and Smithfield.

Thanks for contacting me. I have more that I can share with you. Do you have anything that will help me?

Bette Bradway

OK! We have DIFFERENT BIBLES! And, I have very little on the Onderdonks! Can we get together on this and PLEASE share our records? E-mail me at bibcg@juno,.com and I'll send postal address (it's published in bunches of places, anyway). I'll send copies of what I havem in exchange for yours AND I can give you LOTS of other info on the Bradways. Just give me some time to get it together. I'm State Historian (Genealogist) for the NY Mayflower Society and that's a full time job, all by itself!

Bette Bradway

Thank yo for your message. At this point, I have pretty much concluded any research I am doing on the NJ Bradway family, other to pass on information to those people still hunting. Salem Co. NJ positively "SWARMS" with Bradways, that's for sure. I'll have to dig out my notebooks again (I finally got them put away, pending company for dinner tomorrow!)Let me know if you want info on any possible relationship btween these people in the 1860 census and I'll se what I can do.
