It is believed that the Bragg family line from Virginia came from the union of Thomas Bragg who married Captain Christopher Newport's daughter. There are many things written about the Captain Newport who interacted with Chief Powhatan on a regular basis (when in Virginia) and who helped establish the colony of Jamestown. He was an English Privateer and his duty was to raid Spanish and Portugese ships and turn the booty over to the English crown. He was basically a "legal" pirate. Later, many of these people lived in James City, Virginia. Captain Christopher Newport's daughter was Mary Polly Newport Bragg. Thomas Bragg worked for Captain Newport and it is believed he became his son in law. I am one of their descendants, as far as I know this started the Southern line of Braggs in early 1600s Virginia.
