Dear Julia
Thank you so much for your email. Could you possibly answer the following questions if you can:-
1. How did you find out they were Dutch Ashkenazi Jews.
2. I had already come across Abraham Hart Braham. However entry I found said he was transported to New South Wales and was 22 years old. You said previously he was sentenced twice but never was transported. If Abraham Hart Braham is the one how did he have 12 children etc if he was in NSW.
3. Have heard of Solomon Isaacs etc he was sent to Tasmania and his wife went too as far as I have read. Do you have anything more on this.
4. As to Rosina she was married at 20 years and had children. If she served 7 years in prison was that as a child or after the marriage. Her husband William Prince sounds or his family sound straightlaced. Do you know any more about Rosina's prison sentence. You say you have a small brain I dont think so they are enough to give anyone a headache. I would be very grateful if you could send me the relevant photos and perhaps be able to answer the above.
All refs to John Braham say he was from poor background and was an orphan. Also that he married aristocracy. If he did have Abraham he would have had to be young about 17.
Hope I am not annoying you at all. Thank you for your help which is appreciated.
Regards
Maureen

Dear Maureen, they were actually Dutch ashkenazi jews although we thought for ages they were sephardic. Hannah and Abraham were jews, the gypsy line is from their grandson (my gt gt grandfather Nathaniel Charles) He married a Romany. His father was Nathaniel, Rosina's brother. Google Abraham Hart Braham That's him, our Abraham. i can send photos of him and Hannah and Nathaniel but the others are only my line. In the Jewish Chronicle at the turn of the century Myer Harris who was married to Rebecca (Rosina and Nathaniel's sister) says Rebecca is John Braham's neice. However the dates don't really make sense and we suspect Abraham is more likely to be an illegitimate son that he kept quiet about. In our family we were brought up to believe John Braham was a direct ancestor and so were Rebecca's descendants. John Braham was friends with Dickens and would have been well aware of Abraham's wicked ways. A total embarrassment for John. He was Jewish and sent a hoard of children out pickpocketing, albeit his own. how could it not have been an influence for Fagin. Some people have said that a man called either Solomon isaacs or isaac soloman was Fagin but he and Abraham worked together on crimes and he had no children. i've just read this back and even i don't understand a word of it and i wrote it. I'll have to wait until my daughter Rosanna gets home before i send photos as i have a very small brain. All the best, Julia

Thanks for your reply. What an eye opener. To clarify Rosina who married William Price was my sisters Great Great Grandmother. Obviously Abraham Braham and Hannah Moses were her Great Great Great Grandparents. We are researching on her mothers side and have reached this far back. Can you tell me as I am getting confused who exactly is your Great Great Grandfather and who is the Romany gypsy he married. Is that Hannah Moses because she appears to be definitey Jewish. I am also intrigued as to who is the mulatto.
I have seen quite a lot on Abraham and Hannah there is some on a site talking about marriage in a synagogue and that they were Sephardic jews.
What makes you think the singer John was father to Abraham. There is a lot on him online here and there.
Do you know when Rosina was in prison?
I have to say words fail me on the Fagin aspect where did you get all that info.
Yes please I would love some photos that would be marvellous.
My email is maureenctowns@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks for answering so promptly.
Regards
Maureen
hello, we are indeed researching the same line. Rosina was my great great great grandfather Nathaniel's sister. Abraham was indeed an artist engraver but also a thief who sent his children out stealing. Rosina was given 7 years when caught. we think he was the template for Fagin as the Brahams were friends with Charles Dickens. Abraham and his wife Hannah had at least 12 children. Abraham was transported for life twice but never left England. He probably got away with it because his brother but we suspect father was the very rich and famous opera singer John Braham. Funny lot but interesting. i've always been told that the Princes at Nathaniel's funeral, would have nothing to do with my great great grandfather because he married a romany gypsy and my great great uncle because he married a mulutto. I'll send photos if you like. all the best, Julia

I have stumbled upon your post on ancestry.co.uk re the Braham family. I am researching the family tree of my half sister and have got back to her Great Great Grandmother on her mother's side who was called Rosina Braham. She married William Prince in 1849 and they had quite a few children. Her father was Abraham John Braham who was an artist/engraver. Have found out a lot about the Brahams who were a Jewish family. Trying to find out about his work as an artist but getting nowhere. Are we possibly researching the same line? My email is maureenctowns@yahoo.co.uk if you should care to reply.
Maureen Chapman-Towns

After major housecleaning, I recently relocated the paper on which I had written Eldrena Braham's address in Kingston. She is elderly and does not use e-mail. In fact, I'm not sure she'll remember me. We met at a gathering during her visit to London several years ago. I started yacking about my interest in genealogy, and one thing led to another.

I suggest that those of you who have a connection to Finnie, Harold and their siblings and thus might be fairly close cousins to Miss Braham write to her at 6 Queensbury Drive, Meadowbrook Estate, Kingston 19, Jamaica, West Indies. I ask those of you who are more distantly related, if at all, NOT write to her. As I said, she's elderly and probably not used to being peppered with genealogical questions. Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi,
I just came across this posting as I have just embarked on my family tree project. You've probably made the connections by now, but the Brahams you named are from Linstead, St. Catherine. "Finney" (real name Richmond) is my grandfather. One of his sons, Keith Braham (he is alive and kicking at 90) is my father. He is the catalyst for my explorations. I knew Amy, Mary, Carrie (Caroline) when I was a child. I don't have an awful lot filled in yet, but I'd be happy to share what I have and if you are open to it, I would love if you could share some info with me.

I also have my Braham family with the same issue that the name was originally Abrahams but someone married a Christian and was kicked out of the family. But they carried the name Braham as a middle name in the census and when they came to the USA, changed their name to Braham all except one of the sons. I do not have a George listed in my tree. I would love to know if you have the name Abrahams in your trees.

I am also researching Dorothy Braham (nee Rickell) and found the marriage between Dorothy and George, however their ages aren't correct in the Parish records, which has stumped me. I have married into the family, my husband is Roma Braham's grandson. He has a photo of himself with Dorothy when he was only a toddler.
Do you mind if I ask who your father is? And if you have any more info on George and Dorothy? I have been told that George came from a jewish family and that his family turned their back on him when he was to marry a non-jewish girl. I'd love to know any stories you have been told, if you do not mind?

Many thanks and best wishes,

Alicia Tearle

One of these children was my great great grandfather, Lewis.

I am looking for information regarding the other children he had, Samuel brn abt. 1834, Caroline brn abt. 1836, Charlotte brn abt. 1837, Harriet brn abt. 1840, Mark Henry brn. abt. 1842 and Eliza brn. about 1846.

I also would like any information on Samuel's parents.

If anyone has this name within their family tree, I would love to hear from you.

I have placed this in the Braham Thread as the name Braham played either a middle name roll or a last name roll when they all were in England. My great grandfather changed his Abrahams name to Braham when he naturalized here in the US.

Thank you,
Jennifer Smith nee Braham

Hi, I am trying to track my family back with little information. My Great Granny Claire (possibly Clara, last name possibly Price) married a (?) Braham in about 1924-1926 in America/Canada. I have come across a registration of marriage around this time in York, Ontario, Canada between Hugh Whitaker Braham and Clara Price (again, I dont know if these are the correct names). They had a child (my Granny) called Peggy Elizabeth in September 1926. The marriage didn't work out and was never ever talked about. They were living in New York on their own in 1930 when Granny was 3 and then moved to England. I have very little information about this side of the family as it was never talked about. I wonder if I have the right person or if you can help me at all?

Hello our names are Allison and Alfredo Braham; daughtr and father. We have done some research and we would like to share.

My research has shown us that our line of Braham is coming from Harold Braham born 1890, in phoenix partk st.ann. And goes way back to one Henry Braham who was born somewhere around 1750. I would like to make contact with you so we share information.

I'm the nephew of Harold Braham and the cousin Charlie Braham who had an office in East street Kingston. Charlie's father was Harold Braham, who was connected to Kingston ice factory, dairy farmers and I think that he had some shares in the mrytle bank hotel.

Here is our email address: Allisonbraham@gmail.com

Hello, indeed! Brahams keep turning up. By now I've acted as the go-between for at least three cousins. They should all be e-mailing one another. I hope one of them sees your post and responds. If that doesn't occur within a few weeks, send me your e-mail and I'll forward it to them. I am not related to the Brahams myself.
Cousins: let me know if you contact Susan so I won't duplicate your effort. Thanks.

Hi Laura,

I spoke to my Grand mother on the weekend and got some additional information. Finney's son Cyril was my great-grand father. My grandfather was Stanley George Braham also known as "Chin" his mother was Voilet Harrison from old Road whose parents were John and Catherine Harrison. She also told me that Cyril also had sisters Inez Braham and Mavis Braham from Faiths Pen area. She also said Finney fathered other children in Faiths Pen. He used to visit Old Mt Diablo to buy lumber, also that his relatives had the property that was purchased for bauxite mining in Schalenburg as well as farm lands in St Mary. My email address is shelby_braham@yahoo.com

Wow! you're the third person in the last 3-4 weeks who has contacted me about the Brahams. I think you must be a first cousin twice removed from my friend. I would like to put the two of you in contact. Are you in Jamaica or elsewhere? She lives in Kingston.

If you want to provide your snail-mail address for me to forward immediately, kindly send it to me at ljspurrier@gmail.com. I will then put it in a letter. My friend does not use e-mail and is not that comfortable with computers.

Laura
