Emma, I'm sorry, I have a lot of information on the Braidwoods but I don't have anything on the Ritchie connection other than what is in this thread.
Tannersma gave the information of the adoption, which seems to come from Tannersma's cousin. You should try to follow up with them.
Good hunting,
David

Hi there,
I wonder if you could help...?
I came across this old thread whilst researching my nana's past - and this is really amazing information.
My nana was Jeannie (Jeanie?) Grant Ritchie and whilst I found a lot out about her close (and extended) family, and also her life outside Scotland in her mid/later years, I have been baffled by what happened to her from the age of 4 (in 1917) since both her parents died and presumably she was taken into .care'.
The info you have about her being adopted by James C. Braidwood & Family is really great - I wondered do you have any 'docs, sources or citations' to confirm the details/dates of the adoption which I could add to my tree?
This would be really appreciated - I am doing the research for my mum and she will be so pleased!
Hope to hear from you on this really interesting subject.
Best Regards
Emma

Dear David

I wonder if Margaret was sister of Isobel (daughter of Joseph Broadwood and Isobel Gibson)- if so, could you tell me how we know she was related to Thomas Braidwood, teacher of the deaf? From what you say I presume Joseph was cousin to Thomas and I wondered who their shared grandfather was.(I'm a descendant of Isobel). Many thanks in advance for any information you could supply.

Morven

Hi, good to meet another Braidwood. I'd be really interested to find what you know about the Braidwoods in New Zealand.

I have your line back to about 1675, and they are all Braidwoods. Many people were illiterate way back when and when they spoke their name it was written down by a scribe, who may well have written a variation.

Basically all Braidwoods came from Scotland and Broadwoods came from North Eastern England or South East Scotland.
Many Broadwood families became Braidwoods over the years, but I've not found any Braidwood families becoming Broadwoods.

You seem to have missed out a generation in your tree description.
John Inglis Braidwood b 1902 m Olive Ruby Rollerson
son of John Inglis b 1867 m Agnes Taylor Scott
gs of John Inglis b 1827 m Mary Sharp
ggs of John b 1805 m Janet Inglis
gggs of John b 1877 m Mary Symington

Walter Scott Braidwood was married to Jessie Edna Cook Watson in 1939 at St Giles, Edinburgh.
I don't know of ant descendants.
He was Chief Officer of M.V. Western Chief in 1941 and died 14 March 1941.

Contact me at davidbraidwood@sympatico.ca for more details.

My grandfather was John Inglis Braidwood, b 1902 Leadhills, Lanarkshire. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1918 and is buried in Reefton. He died in 1970. His father was also John Inglis Braidwood, and his father was John Broadwood (not the piano link), son of John Braidwood and Mary Symington. They seemed to have 5 sons, 2 BROADWOOD and three Braidwood. I am trying to figure out whether this was a transcription error?

I am also keen to find further information on Walter Scott Braidwood (my grandfather's brother). He was born in 1903 and wend down at sea during WW2. He may have been married, but i cannot find a marriage certificate. I am keen to find out whether he had any descendants.

If anyone has further information they are willing to share I would be very grateful!

My grandfather was Robert Deans Braidwood. The family seems to have been centred around Matthias Rd, Stoke Newington, London. I believe he was the only one of 12 children born in London.

He fought at the battle of the Mons, WW1,(Middlesex infantry I believe) was gased but survived until about 1957. Has anyone come across his medal? It was stolen.

I would also be interested if anyone can demonstrate a link to the Broadwood piano makers. John Broadwood was apparently from Cockburnspath.

My mother remembers my grandmother (her mother-in-law - born Catherine Braidwood) talking about an uncle who was in the Edinburgh fire service. It seems probable that this was Dugald?

My great-grandfather was Thomas Braidwood, son of William Braidwood who I believe may be the brother of Dugald. Thomas was born in Edinburgh in 1847 and married Elizabeth Alexander in Glasgow in 1876 by which time both his parents are stated to be deceased. William's wife was Janet MacKenzie. Is it possible that this the same William you've referenced?

I am working on the history of the Braidwoods and their schools in the UK and USA. The genealogy of the braidwood family down from Thomas (1715) is no problem, but since you said you have a large record of the Braidwoods, I am asking you one of the two questions:

1. Thomas Braidwood's daughter Margaret was born on 4 September 1755. what happened to her afterwards - did she marry, when when did she die? One thing is for sure - she did not move down from Scotland to England with her family in 1783.

2. It has been said that Thomas Braidwood is uncle to Joseph Watson (1765-1829) who became the first head teacher of a public school for the deaf in 1792. I cannot find any evidence pointing to this, only a line from Watson's 1809 book where he referred to their "ties of blood". Do you have anything on him to link to Thomas Braidwood?

I am asking 6 years too late - but I live in hope!

Hi, I am researching these based on the report of Braidwoods being on the James Fernie in my Family History (Andersons and Camerons also on the ship.
I'm quoting from a type written account of our family, maybe my Gran wrote it and my Mum typed it but she doesn't remember doing so.
"Also the Braidwood family—Dr. Melbourne, a lecturer at Queen’s University and a Rockfellow Scholarship holder for two years. When he went to London to write a History of Australia he was given his Doctorate."
("Rockfellow Scholarship" is probably "Rockefeller Foundation"?)
The NLA site that has scanned newspapers came up with this (whch sort of conflicts with your account of them movign to Hamilton?)
"BRAIDWOOD.— On the 17th August, at Burton terrace, Carrington-street east, Julia, the beloved wife of James Braidwood, sen., aged 66 years."
South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839-1900) Thursday 18 August 1892 Page 4 of 8
(Also in The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931) Thursday 18 August 1892 p 4)
Except Julia nee McInnes was 26 in 1854 according to http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/jamesfernie1854.... , making her only 64 in 1892. So whether they're the same couple I can't say?
Cheers,
bryan

I was amazed at the wealth of information she gave me.

Andy, I research the Braidwood name and I hope I can help you.
Dugald Wilson Braidwood was born 14 July 1824 in St. Cuthbert's Edinburgh and died in 1893. He was a tinsmith, a gas meter maker and more lately an assistant firemaster.

His parents were Alexander Braidwood b 1799 in Broughton, Peeblesshire and Jane Fisher. His line goes further back in Peeblesshire.

James Braidwood Master of Engines was born on 3 September 1800 in Edinburgh and died 1861. His line goes back in Edinburgh and before that in Covington and Thankerton in Lanarkshire.

I don't have these two lines connecting, so I am afraid that I cannot show that Agnes is related to James.

Dugald Wilson Braidwood was married to Margaret McEwan Smith and they had nine children.
Margaret McEwan Braidwood b 1847
Alexander Braidwood b 1848
William Smith Braidwood b1850
Dugald Braidwood b 1852
Jane Paterson Braidwood b 1854
John Smith Braidwood b 1856
lillias Braidwood b 1858
Isabella Maxwell Braidwood b 1860
Lucinda Wilson Braidwood b 1862

I have much more information if you want it.

Also you could help me.
I have an Agnes Mathieson b 1920 in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire.
Is this the Agnes you refer to?
I also have Dugald Augustin Braidwood b 1919 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. Is that her brother?
Could you tell me Agnes's line up to Dugald Wilson?

David Braidwood
davidbraidwood@sympatico.ca

I am looking for lineage of my GG-Grandmother, Marion E. Braidwood (b 1853). First wife of Charles C. Black of Winfield Kansas. Daughter of Thomas Braidwood (b. 1822 NY)and Marion (Burgess). I believe Thomas parents were John and Margaret (Liddle) both of Scotland who immegrated to NY around 1820. Marion's brother Thomas was a settler in Beaver Oklahoma and is chronicled in the history of Oklahoma.

Hi,
Yes, this is the one that Anges has talked about. He was born 1824 in Edinburgh, the year that James Braidwood became Master of Engines in the Edinburgh Fire Service.
I am currently waiting for the Museum of Fire in Edinburgh to get back to me with details, if they find any, as to whether or not Dugald and James were indeed related.
Braidwood167 posted that Dugald was born in 1824, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, I`ll pass this onto Agnes as she was only able to tell me that Dugald died in 1893. Apparently Agnes has a photo of Dugald and also one of his funeral.
If you find any further information I would be much appreciated if you could pass it on and I`ll ensure it gets to Agnes. Likewise if I can find anything of interest I`ll post it as I get it.

Andy.
