Hi! I'm loking for my Lewtons and Brains - Siston, Kingswood, Oldham, Hanham and Bitton.

However, I've George Brain Lewton, Winterbourne, wife Frances, (Fanny)and many others to sort out...:-(

I can follow George and Fanny in the censi:
1851 - George, 26 clockmaker, wife Fanny, 29, Fanny, daughter, 4, Mary Ann, 3 months.
1861: George, 38, Fanny, 40, Fanny 12, Mary-Ann, 10, George, 6, Robert, 3, Emily, 3 months, Sarah Hasting,78 mother in law.
And a few more cessi entreis -1861, 1871,1891, 1901!

I've Richard Brain, married Ann Baggaridge, 4.2.1790, Siston.

Hi! I know that my Brains came from Bitton, Hanham, Oldham and Kingswood but I haven't sorted them out yet.
My family - Lewton Brain.
I've two Samuel Lewton-Brains, one died 1851 in Keynsham. the other Sam 1858 in Bridgend, probably cousins.

For anyone who might be interested if you go onto Flickr and type in Hairnicks you will come to my user site. Under the set "Lost faces of Bristol" there is a picture of James and Elizabeth Brain of Bristol. L Cpl James Brain Warwickshire Reg wounded in France dies Aug 15th 1917 aged 22. buried in France. Elizabeth Brain, died Nov 20th 1917 aged 25 buried at Bishopsworth. Such is the legend on the back of this emotive photograph. Three months after the death of James, Elizabeth died, did she die of a broken heart or did her unhappiness lead to her taking her own young life. This photograph was abandoned in a house I cleared, does anyone know anything about this young couple and their fate?

Hi Martin,
This is great I sort of give up on this branch as there didn't seem to be anymore to find. My Brain tree goes back to 1779 and Griffin tree 1668.
I have census returns for most of the family in the Hixon area. Also from the Staffordshire archives marriage dates and marriages. I can send you all I have if you like.
The Brain/Griffin family moved around the area alot, the villages they lived in are next to one another so the names alter from Hixon, Stowe, Great Haywood, Salt, Enson, Little Haywood and Colwich!!!If you can google a map the area sits between Rugeley,Stafford and Stone. The villages also border 2 of our great landed estates Sandon Hall and Shrugborough Hall. Also the Trent and Mersey canal flows through the area, its a lovely place and is still very olde worlde in parts as we live in Stoke-on-Trent we go quite often

That's great! Definitely have matches there with names and dates. Thank you! If we can keep in touch and share what we know that will be great and greatly appreciated.

I have a lot of knowledge on my great grandfather's family in Australia which is where I was born and living in, as he immigrated to Australia alone in 1912. I'll be happy to share this knowledge with you. I don't have much knowledge of his family back in Staffordshire, mainly just names and birth years, but I'll be happy to share my knowledge with you anyway.

Can I please ask you how far you have been able to go back with the Brain family? I have gotten as far back as the 1830s with Samuel Brain and Harriet Griffin. I could be able to work back some more now that I know the name of Samuel's parents-Samuel and Jane, from your reply.

That's really interesting to know that we have kissing cousins in the family. It clears up some confusion I had with Harriet Griffin's mother having the maiden name of Brain.

William Brain bn 1859 married Hannah Bradbury bn about 1861. Their eldest, William Henry bn 1888, is my great grandfather.

I have to renew my subscription with Ancestry.com which I'll get done later this week. I'll then be able to send you a message through Ancestry.com where I will give you my email address so we can keep in touch and share more detail with you on my knowledge of our Brain family.

Your Grandfather, Dennis, was my Grandmother's cousin. Your Great Grandfather, David, was my Great Grandfather's ( Joseph ) brother. I have a photo of them together with their other brothers and sisters and mother.Their Grandfather, Thomas, came from a large and well-documented family who lived around Hannington in Northamptonshire. I have further details, but am reluctant to publish on the Internet.

Sorry to have taken so long to find your message but I think we are on the same family here. My gt Grandparents were Samuel Brain & Harriet Griffin of Hixon. Samuel & harriet had 2 sons Samuel bn 1865 and William bn 1859.
Samuel & Harriet were kissing cousins. Harriet was the daughter of Aaron Griffin bn1806 and Elizabeth Brain bn 1811.
My Samuel bn 1807 and married Jane Wright and their son Samuel bn1833 married Harriet Griffin this makes them cousins. I hope I have explained this okay!
If you think we are off the same tree please get in touch as I may be able to fill in a few gaps for you

I am also their descendant through my grandfather Denis Brain born in Walsgrave in 1896. I cannot find Thomas's ancestors at all. Though he says in the censuses West Haddon and Hallowell, Northants is a blank. I have gone back to William Blundell of Stoke born abt 1728. For more details look my tree up - it is called "Brain"

I have many family members from West Bromwich that I have been tracing. Eli Brain and Emma Gittens who owned a pub on Gt Bridge are my great grandparents. Their son Eli came to the USA in 1898 and married Amelia Heine in 1902. If you have any info I would really appriciate it Or if I can give you some info I would be happy to. Hi I am researching Edwin brain. He married my grandma in 1933.he was born in 1898.
He ran away to Argentina in 1937.
Don,t know what happened to him there

Hi Angie, Sorry but I have little details about Forest of Dean families. As you may know the first Brain was Guy De Brayne who was given lands by William the Conqueror. No one can trace their family back that far. The Forset of Dean family were very wealthy until they ruined themselves trying to recover monies they thought owing from a marriage to the Sheldon family. I do have some info' from an old friend Tony Brain who passed away some years ago which includes early wills - will forward them if you're interested.

My brain family originate from the Stowe/Colton area of Staffordshire. They consisted of William b 1771, Samuel b 1807, Samuel b 1833, Samuel b 1865. This Samuel moved to the Audley area of Staffordshire his Son was my grandfather Joseph, my father Terrence and then me Susan. I would love to hear from anyone who has info, especially the Brain link to the Griffin line of Stowe.

I have details of the Brain family who immigrated to Australia in 1852 (William and Sarah Foster). Also his father Richard (born Drayton 1810), married Isabella Steel(Weston-under- Wetherley 1841)his father William, born Banbury 1765 who married Frances Washbrook 1786 in Drayton, his father Richard Jnr christened Wootton 1742 married Ann Hawtin 1758 in Banbury, and his father Richard and mother Mary ( I would like to get more details of this marriage).

I have been searching for my grandmother's family for awhile now a have not gotten anywhere she will be 78 in Dec and have not seen any of her family since she was about 12 or so her mothers name was Alexander Brain (Brooks) her father was Charles Brain not sure about full name she had two sister that names were Margaret and June Brain i think her father was in the service they had a aunt named elsie mother and father seperated and my grandmother went her aunt elsie and the other two girls stayed with there mom. The last place they lived together was in Glouster England. If you think this may be some kin to her let me know please, and thanks for getting back with me

I am connected to the Brain family of Terang Australia. Isaac Brain and Jane Hocker's (Hacker) daughter Sarah Jane born 1854 maried 1871 to Thomas Rutter in Terang and died in 1940. Thomas and Sarah are my 2x great grandparents. Their son Thomas came to NZ and married Marion Skeoch in 1896. Love to hear from anyone.

I am descended from Thomas Brane/Brain/Braine and Mary Blundell.They were my Grandmother's Great Grandparents. I have much information concerning their ancestry, their children and descendants if interested.

Stephen Brain born 1805 in Gloucestershire

He married Elizabeth, they had two daughters Maria and Elizabeth in Monmouthshire. They were then living with their grandparents Abraham Brain and his wife Elizabeth on the 1841 Census.
Stephen then appears as Invalid and Blind living with his son William at Turnpike Road, but his wife disappears.
Elizabeth then marries James Jones in Abergavenny, in 1852, they have a daughter Eliza Jones who became the wife of William John Milsom, born 1853 Bedminster Down, Bristol.
Later his mother-in-law turns up as Eliza Phillips Widow, in 1901 Census.
Can anyone shed any further light on these people?
On the 1841 Census James Jones is a farm labourer living with a farmer Mr Phillips, with a girl Eliza Edwards also at the same address, Llwney?

I am a new subscriber to Ancestry.co.uk. and will first develop my Smith line. One of my greatgrandmothers was ELLEN JANE BRAIN and all I can ascertain so far is her marriage to my greatgrandfather David Smith on 6 March 1868 at Tower Hamlets, Middlesex when he was a Metropolitan Police Sergeant. What,if anything, have you recorded about Ellen's birth, death and family please ? I haven't found her on a UK Census yet.

My g-g-grandmother was Elizabeth Brain from Ky born 1838. I believe her father to be James Madison Brain. James & wife Nancy from same location of my relatives & buried there. Bath County, Ky. Elizabeth's death cert. lists father as Major Brain. Fairly new at this & don't have more further back to find a John Brain at this time. Happy to share as I go forward. Sheila

looking at www3.gloucestershire/BMD - this is free, you will see that he also had a brother born in 1865 called John Mark born in the same area.

John Andrew Brain was the son of Isaac Caddick Brain and Sarah Knowles Crow and was born 1825. He had a twin brother Isaac. They were both static engine drivers and later became train engine drivers. What was your grandfather's full name and his brother William's. My Grandmother's father name as she new him was Charles Brain he had a sister name Elsie after she was married she became a Humprey not sure if that the right spell.My grandmother is still living and looking for any of her family she lived with Elsie after her mother and father seperated.If this sounds like anything you need please reply back.
