I am also a descendant of the braithwaites of dunedin. So far i have 18 of the children of joseph braithwaite and mary bellett.
I live in australia, but in two weeks i arrive in new zealand to travel to dunedin to research the braithwaites of dunedin. What descendant of the braithwaites do you descend from? My grandmother was olive braithwaite who married richard trembath. One of their children also richard was my father.

I am a decendant of the Braithwaites of Dunedin. According to my research Joseph and Mary had 22 children. This was verified by a Grandson in a paper article in the ODT Dunedin. I have 16 confimed names at this stage. Either by their birth or death information. I can identify 4 other that could be Joseph and Mary children. Regards

Hi fellow Braithwaite our surname originated from Ireland after a man called henry braithwaite he was a famous alcohol prossesser and he shipped his alcohol over here to england. One day henry braithwaite came over to england to live because he got bored with living in ireland many people asked him what the surname meant and he said my surname means strenth ability stamina stelth and good coroperation

Hi Irene,

I do have a John Braithwaite who would have been around about the same time as your John. But I know my John (no dates yet) was married to Sarah, and had a son by the name of Francis Braithwaite born circa 1823 in Keswick, Cumbria. I found this from the Christening record on www.familysearch.org.

So far I have no connection with any Braithwaites in Haile. But you never know - the further up the tree we go, we could find a connection - stay in touch!

Hello there! Tom Braithwaite was my grandmother's uncle. Her mother was Nellie Pinder (nee braithwaite). I have posted photographs of Tom's parents' grave on my public family tree (Pinder). If you have any photographs of Tom and perhaps his family, I would be thrilled to see them. I grew up in Whitkirk, but now live in Sheffield. Braithwaite cutlery

Has anyone information on the small Sheffield scissor/cutlery making company owned by my Gt Grandfather Charles Braithwaite in the mid to late 1800s? It was still running in 1884, the year before his death, but I have no data on its scope or indeed what eventually happened to it. Charles was born in Rotherham in about 1815. He married widow Ann Johnson, who already had three children. His son by Ann, Charles Frederick Braithwaite, became a Methodist minister. His daughter Annie married Charles Deakin.

Hi There,

I am researching a line of Braithwaites (on my Grandfathers side). My grandparents live in Portinscale, which is very close to Crosthwaite Church - I presume this is the same area?

I am finding it difficult to trace the family using resources based solely on the Internet (I am trying still). So far I have found my great Grandfather Ernest b.1893 in Keswick, plus his siblings + spouse, great great Grandfather Henry b.1863 in Penrith. Both of them are buried at Crosthwaite Church with their wives.

I have found gt, gt, gt Grandfather Francis Braithwaite b.1823 in Keswick.

As far as I can make out so far this line of Braithwaites move around the cumberland/lancashire area. Probably due to the introduction of the railway and industry.

I'd obviously like to find earlier ancestors and as much information about the named ancestors above.

I don't know if this line will connect with your line, but it's still rather interesting... chances are that they will connect at some point!

Hi, My Greatgrandmother was Emily Braithwaite (1841) and I have managed to trace her line back to George Braithwaite, who married Elizabeth Baldwin 23 Jul 1775 at Little Ouseburn, Yorkshire. But I cannot find where George was born. Basically, I have a choice of Ripon (abt 12 miles), or Leeds (abt 20 miles) either of which would be comfortably feasible. Is anybody else pursuing this line, and if so, have you managed to find out where George was born (and when) please? Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am not a Braithwaite but my father is from Barwick in Elmet, Nr Leeds and my son Tom is named after a farmer called Tom Braithwaite from that village. He was alive when I was six in 1958 and he had a wonderful border collie dog called (imaginatively!) Rover. I have pictures of him( Rover and master) . My father is William Pawson, born in 1921 in Barwick.

I am looking for her parents/and or siblings. I too visited Barbados many years ago as a child, but barely remember cousins' names, etc. Thank you.

The name Braithwaite is actually Old Norse for a broad, cleared piece of land.

Braith=broad
waite=cleared area of land

mary j b spence married at a catholic/non-conformist church or a register office in hartlepool in 1878. she was born here in 1861 but i cannot locate a baptism as yet. note she married aged 17.

if this is the right one then 'free bmd' lists the mother's name on the marriage as mary jane braithwaite spence and the father as henry robinson tyson.

the baptism at st andrew's church in hartlepool on 09 september 1888:

eva braithwaite, daughter of henry and mary jane braithwaite tyson. 3 bedford street in hartlepool. father a labourer.

I have Braithwaites in my family and have a slight link with Hull area.My G Grandfather James Fletcher Braithwaite B 14/2/58 Cliffe nr Selby married Annie Tarran 17/1/188 at the Latimer cgurch, Williamson Street Sculcoates. I can find no details for Annie Tarran even though I have her original birth and death certificate, she does not appear on any census. I don't know how long or if they live in Hull at all, by 1910 they were living in York. James Fletcher Braithwaites parents were Thomas b 1823 Newton on Derwent and Ann Fletcher b about 1826. Thomas parents were Thomas snr born about 1789 and Hannah Simpson b 1787 in Cliffe, they also had a daughter, Susann. I hope this is some help

My grandmother, Eva Braithwaite TYSON, married Charles Henry BROWN in about 1911 after leaving Hartlepool. The settled and raised their family in Vancouver B.C.

I don't know the Braithwaite side of my Grandmothers family...

Braithwaites were originally from Cumberland. eg Parish of Crosthwaite please look there. My ancestor was Jennet Braithwaite (I think her mothers name was Fisher) of Seathwaite (Crosthwaite) who married John Wastel of Wasdale abt 1628 does any one have any info on this family.

my husband's great great great grandfather was William Braithwaite born in Hull in 1829, he married Ellen Young and they had 8 children, some born in Hull and some in Grimsby. Does this match anything you have?

that was amazing... apparantly i just found out that my family history leads back to William Braithwaite that came to Frederick County Va... the funny thing is i still live in Frederick County i guess that explains a good bit... i was wondering if anyone knew of my correct family crest, i have found 2 one that is yellow and black and the other which is red with a silver V and 3 crosses... if u can be of help please email me at s32rocket@aol.com

Adelaide Braithewaite, Ireland (?)

If anyone has a stray Adelaide Braithewaite who might connect to mine, please post.

My ancestor Adelaide Braithewaite according to family legend was from Downpatrick, but I have no proof of where she was from.

She married William Press at the Quebec Garrison (Quebec City, I presume), in 1865. He was a Sergeant Major in the British Royal Artillery.

Family legend is that they also were posted India at some point.

They turn up in 1869 at Gorleston-with-Southtown, Suffolk (at least I think this is them), then in 1871 in Donegal, Ireland. They settle in Moville/Greencastle. She dies in 1907. There is a plaque to William and Adelaide in the Lower Moville Church, Greencastle.

William and Adelaide's children were William Braithewaite, Henry John, Adelaide, Amelia, Maria, and Martha Jane.

I would love hear about any stray Adelaide Braithewaites born around the right time (early to mid 19th-C).

hello - searching for details of Elizabeth Braithwaite (possibly Elizabeth Ann Braithwaite) born c1869. She married Henry Dutton, and the 1901 census shows her birthplace as Liverpool. However, my grandmother believed she was born in Cumberland. She had a brother JAck (possibly aka John), and they were orphaned and brought up by another lady who we don't think was a relative.

Henry and ELizabeth had the following children:-

George Henry Dutton, born c1887 Seaforth, Lancs
John James Dutton (aka Jack), born c 1888, Liverpool
Emma Elizabeth b 1891 Liverpool
Florence Ada b1893
Margaret b1895
Ethel M b1898
Blanche b1900
Alice b1902
Stanley Vernon b1904
Lilian b1906 (my great grandmother)
Minnie b1913

Thanks to other researchers I have been given lots of help with the Dutton family tree, however Elizabeth Braithwaite remains elusive! The name Hismir has been pencilled in one old document, however I cannot find this name anywhere else. I am still searching for the marriage of Elizabeth to Henry, circa 1886-1890

Any help/advice will be gratefully received!!

I ran across your message today. I am Henry Hyda and Mollie Braithwait's great grandaughter.
Henry and Mollie had 3 children, Grace(my grandmother)Alta, and Henry.
They lived on a farm south of Fontanelle, Iowa. Henry and Mollie, and Grace are buried in the Fontanelle cemetary.
Grace married Gifford Seley who was my Grandfather.

George and Edwin's father also William born 1824 Bishop Monkton, North Yorkshire. Married Elizabeth Middleton 1848 Leeds, they lived in Leeds before moving to the Hull area. They also lived in the USA for about 2 years (1849/50), had a son Charles C Braithwaite born Jersey City.

Have Braithwaite's from the Sculcoats area of Hull. Two brothers played for Hull F C from 1879 to 1882. George William and Edwin Middleton Braithwaite. George was a Timber Merchant. If this info rings bells contact me at pblood8a@hotmail.co.uk
