I read the messages on this board and am interested on any information you have on the geneology about James Brakey. I am not sure he is the same person, I will have to check the info I have dating back to a James Brakey in New York. I am, however a decendent of James Brakey. My Father was Walter Raymond Brakey, born in Soldier Kansas in 1900. His father was William Brakey. I go by my middle name which is Glen, named after Sidney Brakey, my fathers brother.

Glen Brakey

Hi Angela Stallard; I am sorry for this late reply to your James Brakey inquiry. We have been moving from Mass to Idaho. My Great Great Grandfather was William Brakey. He and his brother James immigrated from northern Ireland to Canada in the late 1830's or early 1840's. They both came to Franklin County, NY and bought farms there in 1842+/-. William's farm was near Trout River, Constable, NY (right on the Canadian Line) and James' farm was in Salmon River a few miles away. I have searched the land and probate records in Malone, NY, the county seat, and they also have census records there. I do not have anything on James Brakey except that he bought a farm in 1842+/-. However, your James may be a son of his. The Brakey's had a habit of having a William, James, or George in every generation, at least in my line. Brakey was also spelled Breakey. My line has kept Brakey. Please do not hesitate to contact me , now that we are settled here in Idaho. I have a lot of infromation relating to Ireland, and France whence they came from. Bud Huntley

Almer,
Hope you can help me. You mentioned a James Brakey in one of your posts. I have a James Brakey that shows up in Lockport, Niagara County, NY city directories starting in 1884 going up to 1900 at the time of his death. Last name does change from Brakey to Breakey. My James was b. abt 1823 in Ireland (accord. to census records) and died in 1900. He immigrated to Canada and married a lady there named Jane (last name unknown). They moved from there to NY and had a daughter named Isabel b. abt 1879 in NY. James and Jane do show up in the 1880 Niagara County Census in the city of Lockport. You mentioned that your William had a brother named James...could this be him? And if so, will you please let me know what you know about him. I have just found this line, so know virtually nothing about it. Thanks in advance.
Angela Stallard

Brakey Connection

My brother was Patrick Henry Brakey who died in Ogden Utah in 1976. My father, Walter Raymond Brakey was born in Soldier, Kansas in August 1900. He was killed in an automobile accident in July 1965 in Southern Utah on the way back from a vacation to California, my Mother was killed with him. My dad lived in Redmesa, Colorado near Four Corners. He and my Mother, Vira May Hamblin were married in North Western New Mexico. They then moved to Utah where they lived until they died. My five older brothers who were Brakeys (Walter LLoyd, Jerry, Bob, Pat, and John) have all died at young ages. Only Roy (Oaklahoma), Barry (Vernal, Utah) and myself, Glen (Clovis, New Mexico).

Glen

She said she would send it, but that was in the Summer and I have recieved nothing yet. Tell Shon hi. Is he still with the Railroad?

Glen

Dear Mr. Huntley,

Re: yours of Date: 4 Oct 2001 2:40 AM GMT

You mentioned William the Conquerer . . . .

There were three Hueguenots named de Brequet that left France when the Edict of Nantes was revoked c. 1685 by that most catholic King Louis. They fled to the Netherlands and joined William of Orange when he went to England to dispense with the throne usurper.

Then on to Ireland where they became linen bleachers and anglicized their name to Breakey. A copy of their linen stamp in on file in Ireland.

For more detail I refer you to http://www.breakey.org/

Jim Breakey

It is my understanding that a Breakey who had moved west was/became a horse thief, which was a major, and socially speaking, truly disssspikabl crime in those days.

This caused many Breakeys in the area to change the spelling of the name.

For more on the origins of the Breakey (?Breaky/Brakey?) moniker I refer interested parties to
http://www.Breakey.org/

Perhaps you can help. I am searching for what may be my last living lst cousin. Her maiden name was Patricia Sue Brakey and she grew up in Oklahoma. Her father was Ralph Brakey and her mother Hazel Slavens. She had two brothers, Herbert and Jerry.(deceased) She would be in her sixties I believe. Should you have helpful information I would appreciate hearing from you.

Rosie

Hi: My mother was a Brakey. Her Father was Talbot Brakey, born in Constable (Trout River) NY. His father was Joseph, who was the son of William. William and his brother James came to northern NY in 1842 and each bought a farm there as that area was just being cut into farms. They came from Canada and were listed as Irish. My Grandfather told me that the Brakeys came fron County Tyrone which is in Northern Ireland. If you have any info about the Brakey line, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Bud Huntley

brakey lineage

Hi. My mother was Mildred Brakey, Her father was Talbot Irwin Brakey, born in Constable(Trout River) NY which is on the Canadian line about 30 miles north of Malone NY. His father was Joseph Brakey and Joseph's father was William Brakey, who evidently emigrated from Canada in 1842. They were listed in the census records as Irish. They probably came over during the potato famine. My Grandfather Talbot told me that they came from County Tyrone, which is in Northern Ireland. He said that he was Scotch-Irish, wharever that means. Someone told me that the Brakeys came over with William the Conquerer and that the old name was Breguet(sp). William had a brother named James Brakey, who bought a farm on the Salmon River, only a few miles from William's farm. My grandfather came to Holyoke, MA as a young man and married Frieda Bilz. His brother George also came to Holyoke. Later Talbot bought a farm in Easthampton, MA, where my mother was born, and me also! If you have any infromation on the Brakey line, I sure would like to receive it. Thanks

Re: brakey lineage

Barbara Conner; Hi Barbara, I do remember your mother Florence Smith and Aunt Bessie coming to the farm. I was "young" then (I turned 70 in December). I also remember Aunt Margaret Brakey Vaugh Gunsolis, Talbot's sister. My mother passed over 2 years ago this past June. She was 3 weeks short of 90. Where do you live? We are living in Cummington, Ma, about 17 miles west from Northampton. My wife Sandy and I purchased and old house (built in 1792) and have been restoring it. The farm house in Easthampton is vey similiar to it. I didn't own a construction business; a land surveying and civil engineering business, in which I am still active, and locating property lines and doing subdivisions etc. Sonny owns the farm in Easthampton, and Donny built a house across the street where the sawmill was located. All of Sonny's kids live on lots from the farm. I did not know that the name was changed from Breakey, although it is a common spelling for the name. One of my daughters used to live in Lake Placid, NY. During one of my visits to her, I went to Malone, NY and to the Registry of Deeds (you can't keep me out of those places) and the Registry of Probate. I searched the deeds for the farm in Constable and for James's farm in the next town. I also read the wills for William Brakey, and looked at the census data that was there for the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census. It told a lot about the farm and who was living there at the time of the census and their ages. William had several children and was supposed to be married to General Irwin's daughter. I will be glad to share that with you. Let me know how to send it to you, or if you are local, we can get together. Our email is ash1792@quixnet.net. I lalso visited the old farm in Trout River. My grandfather told me a lot about it when I was growing up. It is right on the Canada Line. Thanks for you reply, Cousin. Keep in touch.

Hi, my grandmother had a sister Freida Bilz. They came over from Wildenfels, Germany in 1895 (through Ellis Island). Freida would have been born around 188?'s. They settled in Holyoke, Ma. I'm trying to get more info on them. I do have some of their ancestors. And if this is your Freida I have some pictures. The only thing is that when my grandmother passed away in the 1960's Freida shows a last name of Forgette, living in West Springfield. They did have some cousins in the area as well and there could have been another Freida, or she remarried if your grandfather passed away before this. Does this help? You can find Frieda in the Ellis Island records. I hope to have more in a few days if my Aunt can provide anything. She has lived in the area her entire life and has many of the originals papers from Germany.

Email me if you like: tjgarlow@msn.com

Hello cousin! I'm so excited to have found a relative. I remember your Mother well. I can remember the house Aunt Millie lived in, although I must admit I don't remember you (sorry!). Maybe there is an age difference. Anyway, my Mother was Florence Elizabeth Brakey Smith, daughter of Bess and George from Holyoke! In your 'brakey lineage' I learned more about our family than I ever knew! My Uncle Walter did, however, confess on his deathbed that the name Brakey was changed from Breakey when George and Talbot moved from New York. I very well remember the farm, Aunt Frieda and Uncle Talbot (I have photos of him, but not her) and Uncle Irwin, Aunt Dot, and the boys (Sonny and Donny). Are you the Huntley that owns (owned?) the construction company? I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

I am researching my great aunt Mary Anne MCFadyen who married a Peter Brakey in Glasgow, Soctland. The went over to Delaware Ave. Ohio in (I think) the early 1900's. I know they had at least two children (more). Peter McLintock Brady and Margaret Cassidy Brakey. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
