Elizabeth,

I'm so glad the information was helpful; I've been looking through old Alabama newspapers, but haven't been able to find anything more--I suspect I'll have to travel to Alabama to look through the state archives in person.

I have an interesting story about Miles Manuel Welch, too. He was in the 39th Georgia, Company A. I am related to Larkin through his son Thomas (m. Nancy Huffman), his son John Thomas (m. Estelle Rodgers) and his daughter Allie Margaret (m. Howard Bray). Howard's great grandfather, Price Turner, was also in the 39th Georgia, Company A, but he was killed in the battle of Resaca. MM Welch was one of three men who swore to the widow's identity in the 1890s when she applied to the state for a pension. If you're interested in the pension files, they're available at the Georgia Virtual Vault (http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/index.php). Sarah Jane's death certificate (under Sarah J. Welch) is there, as well as her pension application (in the main Confederate Pension Applications). Margaret Cheek Turner's pension application (with MM Welch's story) is under the Confederate Pension Applications Supplement.

Best,
Katie

Hi! I'm descended from Larkin Bramblett through his daughter Sarah Jane, who married Miles Manuel Welch; their daughter Fannie, who married John Long; their daughter Anna Lou, who married Charlie Adams; and their daughter Geneva, who married Christopher Stark. You have more information on Larkin than I have ever been able to find! I'll let you know if I find anything else, and I hope you'll keep me posted, too. One interesting thing: I found Sarah's death certificate online, and in the space where her father's name should have been, a name had been written in and then crossed out, replaced with "Harris". Were they ashamed that they were related to Larkin? I guess that would make perfect sense.

Update:

I am looking for more information on Larkin Bramlett. He was born in SC ~1823, married Amanda Caroline Farrow and had 5 children in GA and AL (Sarah Jane b. 1843, m. Miles Manuel Welch; W. Harris b. 1846 m. Barbara Huffman, Thomas Malmoth b. 1847, m. Nancy Adaline Huffman, James Richard b. 1850 m. Mary J. Venable, and Colonel Wiley b. 1853 m. Lydia Staggs).

In 1850 they were living in Summerville, Chatooga, GA, but it seems they had come to Cherokee Co. Alabama by 1853, as in fall 1853 Larkin was indicted in the Cherokee County Circuit Court for the murder of Benjamin F. O'Bannon (who seems to have been born around 1827 in Alabama and to have been living in Cherokee County in 1850 with his mother Elizabeth and some siblings). The venue was changed to Benton/Calhoun County, where in Nov 1857 he was convicted. He unsuccessfully appealed (Bramlett v. the State 31 Ala. 376) and was hanged on 5 Mar 1858.

I'm looking for any more information on this case, Larkin, or Benjamin O'Bannon. Thanks for your help!

I think we share some relatives, although I haven't got any information. My great grandmother was a Bramblett who married a John McLean (or Mcclain). She had a sister named Betty. Betty is buried in Lexington Cemetery. They also had a brother, John, who was deaf. According to a family story, my great grandfather found Sarah in the woods subsisting on berries, etc. She and her siblings had run away from home. Their father had deserted them and their mother was in an asylum and they were living with their grandparents. This was near Lexington. I'd love to know more. Barbara

BRAMBLETT Larkin

I'm looking for information on Larkin Bramblett (1823-1858) who was the son of Enoch Bramblett (I think) and Martha Ruth Bishop (1801-1850). He was from South Carolina or Georgia. He married Amanda Caroline Farrow (1827-1910) and took the family to Alabama, where apparently in 1853 he killed someone. I think he was hanged for the murder in 1858, and Amanda took the family back to Georgia. His kids were Thomas Malmoth Bramblett (1847-1915), Sarah (1843-1927), Harris (1846-1901), James R (1850-1936), and Wiley (1853-1924). I'd appreciate any information on Larkin, especially more information on the murder.

Does anyone have any info on William Bramblett of Scott County, KY? He would have married a Dora Whattenbarger sometime in the early 1920's. Her first marriage was to a Crawley in Fayette County, KY. I believe the only child that William and Dora had was Ollie May Bramblett, 2/19/1924-7/10/1924. Dora died 5/4/1924.
