I've also done a DNA search using GeneBase. It doesn't tell us a lot other than my DNA is the most common European haplotype (R1b1b2a1a1). If you're interested, depending on the markers now in the record, we have some close matches south of the Pyrenees in Northern Spain and the Balearic Islands, but I'm not sure that this isn't a function of the sample group in the current database.

Thank you. I figured that much. My wife thinks there is a family resembulance. It is kinda hard to tell. I have sharpened the picture a little and it is a little clearer. A great pciture though.

What makes things so confusing regardin Zachariah is that there were at least 4 of them. They sound like they were cousins.

Good to meet you. I have long wondered what happened to those children after the War Between the States. Your Great Great Great Grandfather was a Second Sergeant in Company D, the 34th Ala and according to the record was killed in the Battle of Murphreesboro, Tenn. My Great grandfather Morgan L. Brand was with him in that unit, but survived only to be captured months later, where he spent most of the rest of the war. I have been unable to find where they buried Zacariah after the battle, but Zachariah Sr.(your gggg grandfather) is buried in a farm field on the Horseshoe Bend in Alabama, that was owned by a man named Bernard Coker. (Zach Sr was a member of a Georgia Militia Unit in the war of 1812 (1812-1814) The whole family moved from Alabama to Mississippi and Texas. I believe that Araminta and my great grandmother Levisa Harris were sisters also. There was a genelogical query about your family in the 1950's from a woman named Miller, then in California, that must be Lenora.
My Dad moved to Louisiana from Beaumont, Texas in the late 1930's where he met my mom. I have been a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, and have worked for 30 years in the Chemical Industry.

I have a letter addressed to Sir Alexander Brand from his four daughters: Bethea; Christan; Elizabeth; and Katherin which also refers to a son. The letter is addressed to him in London but unfortunately it is un-dated (other than postal marks of April 11(in red - Edinburgh) and 17(in black - London)and has no details as to its origin. The Edinburgh mark was in use between 1714 and 1725. It starts "Wear very much refreshed with your saying you will be down hear in May". I don't know if this helps.

Robert and Simeon Brand West Greenwich, RI 1782

I have been working on the Simeon Brant name. It appears to me that there were two of them. One served in the Revolutionary War and married Prudence Phelps and the other married Phebe Loetz. There are land records in West Greenwich, Rhode Island that show Simeon and Phebe selling land in 1789 to Samuel Albro. This is three years after Simeon of the Rev. War married Prudence Phelps in 1786. How could that be if they are one in the same? Also there is a land sale in 1778 from Simeon and Phebe to his "father" Robert Brand. I beleive this clearly indicates the Simeon who married Phebe was the son of Robert Brand (Sr.). The father of the other Simeon of the Rev. War may have been the son of a Simeon Brand/Brend who is found in the 1782 tax records along with Robert (Sr.). They were both over 50 years of age, which would make their births before1732. For Simeon and Phebe to have had a son by 1776 he would probably have been born about 1750. I believe Simeon of the Rev. War may have been a son of this Simeon and was born in 1758 as his Rev. War records indicate. The Simeon Brand/Brant of the Rev. War would have been too young to have owned land in 1778 and too young to be the married by 1776. I do not see how these could be one in the same. It appears these two Simeon Brand/Brant persons were cousins. I believe somone has combined these two individuals into one person. Also in the town records of West Greenwich you can find references to Robert Brand keeping the children of Simeon Brand and also people of the town were paid for doing the same. These two children are named Mason and Elias. They appear later as the brothers of Simeon Brant (b.1776) who came to Michigan in 1836 from NY. This Simeon was the son of Simeon and Phebe (Loetz) Brand/Brant. Please let me know what you think of this? I know the early records of the Brand family are sparse. Does anyone have a record of a Simeon Brand being a brother of Robert Brand Sr.?

BRAND descendants from Germany > NY > IA > MO

Maria BRAND and Christian KOHLER were the
parents of Christian Friedrich Wilhelm KOHLER,
who immigrated to the United States in 1863.

Currently, we have no information as to whether
Maria BRAND and her husband, Christian KOHLER
immigrated to the US. But, the marriage record
of their son (mentioned below) shows that Maria
was deceased by the date of that wedding,
11 Nov 1868.

Both Sophia (the name she used) and Christian
were born in Germanic Europe. Sophia, in 1842,
in an unknown loaction; and Christian, in 1837,
in the Federal State of Brandenburg, Prussia.

They married in 1868 in Wolcottsville, Niagara
County, New York, in a Lutheran Church - where
the record was written in German. But, we know
that they were in Macon County, Missouri by 1870.

My husband's family has passed-down verbal
memories, and a picture, which indicate that
Christian (the one who immigrated in 1863) and
his wife,
Christiane Sophia Dorothea NIEMANN / NEUMANN
were in northeast Iowa for a short time before
settling Liberty Twp, Macon County, Missouri.

I am continuing a 35 year ongoing search for
information about this couple. As you would
expect, we have seen both of their surnames
spelled a number of different ways.

We know that Sophia's parents also immigrated
and ended up in Macon County, Missouri. They
were Mary Elizabeth and Henry NEUMANN / NIEMANN.

We have much information, about Sophia's &
Christian's descendants. Do they fit into
your family anywhere? Do you happen to know
any information about any siblings these people
might have had? We are willing to share.

Leslie (Bridges) KOHLER
Aug67@cox.net
Aug67@att.net

Meetzen, Germany BRAND ??

Recently I found something that could be a
help to the search of my husband's family.
If you connect to this family, or have info that
could help us, please contact me.

Here is the story, so far -

I gleaned Maria BRAND's name from her son,
Christian's marriage record, in Wolcottsville,
Niagara County, New York, USA.

Christian Friedrich Wilhelm KOEHLER (KÖHLER ?)
was born on 22 Sep 1837. On a form filed to
request Civil War pension monies for his widow,
she listed his birth town is listed as Metz.
According to the Brandenburg, Prussia, Emigration
Records, Christian was born in either Melzow or
Klinkow, Brandenburg, Prussia. (He emigrated in 1863.)

Well, I recently found a Maria KUHLER (b 1801) in
the 1867 census for Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany
- place Meetzen !!

In this census, her relationship
to the family is not stated.

The family is shown as:
Ernest Marten - age 33
MacHdalena (?) Marten - age 35
Doris Marten - age 12
August Marten - age 2
"Unbenannt" - age 0 (infant??)
Maria Kuhler - age 66

So, of course, I am wondering -
Could this Maria BRAND be ours?????
Maybe she was the mother-in-law in this household??

Leslie Kohler - Aug67@cox.net
PO Box 8137, Glendale, AZ, USA, 85312-8137

Hi

My great grandad did have a brother called Thomas. I have a few pictures of my Brand side and a couple of them from what was written on the back by my nan are are Jackie, one with "his young lady" and another is of him standing by a van and it says on the back that is is who he worked for after coming out of the navy. Wm McLaren (i think) Baker and Confectioner, Loanhead. I also have a picture of him in navy uniform. It does seem to be too many similarities for it not to be the same person. If you didnt mind sending me your email address i could email you a report on the Brands that i have see if anything fits. I do have death date for the Thomas i have, 1947 but that could be wrong as i have found the info going on records which i ould have got wrong and they are not very up to date so could be missing quite a bit of info.

ClaireLudlow311@hotmail.com

Kind Regards and look forward to hearing from you

Claire

I have a family creast - coat of arms with me, i also have a painting of our crest with en enscription on. According to the encription the first recorded brand was in 1725 in South Africa. Knowing our history and the language we speak, we must have com originally from the Netherlands i suppose. Though our names we have used in the famalies diver from what i can find on the internet. Also our creast - coat of arms does not correspond to that on the internet. The only resemblence on the crests are the helmets. Is their anyone that can assist.

Re: Brand mailing list of rootsweb.com.....

Below is the info that I have collected on the father of Dr.James Brand. Contact me at:mcdonaldbrand@gmail.com
Don Brand

Major James Edward Brand
James Edward Brand was a gentleman watchmaker, born in 1702, and raised in a privileged neighborhood in Edinburgh. He learned the profession from his father, Alexander Brand, who was one of the foremost watchmakers in Scotland. James Edward Brand left the Watch making business to join the British army. Being educated and upper class, he was accepted into the Officer corps. He served in the German Brigade for an extended period, mostly in the East Indies. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the German Brigade. When the second Jacobite Rebellion broke out in 1745, Brigadier James Brand resigned his British Army commission volunteered to defend his homeland in Scotland. He volunteered his service to the cause and was named the Quartermaster in Baggott’s Hussars. Baggott’s Hussars were mounted cavalry that figured prominently in the decisive Battle of Culloden. It may be mere speculation on my part, but I have to believe that both Major James and his son Lt. James Brand (aka DR. James Brand) must have been ardent fox hunters. Both had to have been experienced riders to have accepted into a cavalry. The brave Major was captured the day after the Battle of Culloden, trying to haul supplies to his men. He was captured with another officer, Robert Randal. They were offered leniency in exchange for cooperation and information on the Jacobite forces. Randal sold out, but Major James Brand remained true to the cause, despite what must have been horrific torture. He was imprisoned at Carlisle Castle until his trial and execution. In most cases the prisoners were forced to draw lots to determine who would be executed and who would be deported to the colonies and subsequently sold into bond slavery. One can only speculate whether he was singled out because of his high rank in the British army. He must have taken some solace that his son, Lt. James Brand, also an officer in the rebellion, would be spared from execution, and shipped to the Colonies (Maryland). Major James Brand petitioned the King for clemency, and requested that he be exiled to the Colonies. That request was denied by the King. Major James Edward Brand was hung, drawn and quartered in a mass execution on October 18, 1746. The Brand family must have held the major in great esteem and pride, for they named their sons after him for many succeeding generations.
I can only speculate the cause, but the name Alexander was purged from the family after was of 1745. It would seem plausible that possibly Alexander Brand, the father of Major James Brand and grandfather of Lt. James Brand, may well have remained loyal to the British Crown during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745.
Yes! I do have a Frank and Elma Brand listed in my files. Frank (d.1919) was the son of Adam Brand and grandson of the referenced Valentine Brand. I come from the line of Valentine Brand (jr.) who was Adam's brother. Both came from Germany ca. 1848. I can provide some GEDCOM files of this family if you send your e-mail. Mine is: brandtsail@juno.com. A few years ago I had correspondence with Claudia Wilson who comes from Katherine Brand the older sister of Frank. Claudia has information on this family and furnished me the GEDCOM file. I will try to contact her and get her in the loop for providing info.

Don Brandt

Ira Smith Brand - Franklin County, NY

Hello -

I'm at a dead-end with this line of my family and am wondering if anyone has information. I'm trying to reach Rod Brand who posted something about Ira S. Brand on this message board, but it was posted in 2000. If anyone knows a way to reach him, I would love to get the information.

Ira Smith Brand was born abt 1825, possibly Vermont/Rhode Island/NY. He married Pamelia/Pernelia Emlaw/Amlaw. They had a son, Marlin Wood Brand born 1850 in Malone, NY. Marlin later married Mary Jane Hamilton who's mother Chloe Cobb Hodges is part of the Hodges Family of New England and their family is heavily documented. I think the post from Rod Brand is my Ira. Rod stated that Ira went to California for the gold rush and died there in 1852. I have searched the entire Malone, NY 1850 census and not been able to find any of the children's names or his wife's name, although it is documented in the Hodges book that Marlin's parents were from Malone, NY. FYI - There is another Ira S. Brand who was Marlin and Mary Jane's son, born abt 1883.

Any help would be appreciated. If you reply to this it will email me and let me know.
Laurie Brand

Agnes's mother was Margaret Carlyle and father was William Carlyle. The family lived in Ecclefechan (in the parish of Hoddom) and ran a pub called the Globe Inn. Despite my efforts I haven't been able to pinpont the exact birth date for either Margaret or William although I do a have a copy of her Will but unfortunately it doesn't give details of age.

The name Carlyle features in names of many of their chldren/grandchildren etc.

Hi

I've been starting to try to research my family history and came across your message - my grandad was a Thomas Brand who lived in Bonnyrigg - died in about 1963-4. He was a miner and he had three children, one of whom was adopted (he's actually Thomas's nephew) and is my Uncle Jack (known as Jackie) who was in the Merchant Navy. His older brother John was in the Navy and his sister Barbara is my mum. Wonder if this is too much of a coincidence! I'd be really interested to know! Kind regards,
Potter - Brand RI / MA 1815-1890

My New England grandmother always maintained that her maternal grandmother was of Narragansett blood. The particulars I have found so far:

William Potter b. about 1815 in RI, d. 1890 in Taunton MA.
in early 1840's m. Amy Ann Brand b. about 1822 in RI, d. 1885 in Taunton, MA. He worked in a cotton mill in Taunton. They were listed as white on the Census 1850-1880.

Children:
1. William H Potter b. about 1843 m. Rhoda Field in 1859.
2. Lauretta I Potter b. in 1844 in Taunton m. George F Case in 1862
3. Susan A Potter b. in 1846 in Taunton m. James W Rankin in 1867. This is my grandmother's grandmother. Rankin is from PEI, Canada and his folks appear to be from Scotland.

POTTER is a very common name in RI, but I have read where some Potter's from Charlestown where disgruntled natives who moved to New York. I'm in the process of getting his death record from MA, but I don't know how far that will get me in documenting native heritage.

BRAND surname is found at Westerly, RI with no mention of native origins. However, there is a group of Brands of Natick, Titicut, and Mattakeeset in MA in the mid-1700's.

How do I verify my grandmother's story?

Regards,
Barb
