Research in Italy: 4 BRAND brothers==BRANDI

My husband is a BRANDI. We finally went to Italy to visit his family. I learned so much there! His great grandmother was 94 and told the story about 4 BRAND brothers who came from England and faught in the crusades and settled in the Italy region and that all BRANDI descend from these English brothers. They were very noted. One settled in central Italy-- Abruzzi area of Guilianova and that is the branch of the family from which my husband descends. They explained all the names and I wrote them down. When I got back--- I checked the Ellis Island records and from there they went to Pittsburgh and spread out. I then wrote to the local and Provience of Abruzzi in both English with Italian below and they sent me a mess of marriage records! It was amazing to me that Italy has records dating so very far back unlike here in the US!

Anyway, as you research your Brandi family-- you must start with USA records then Ellis Island get them back to the region in Italy as trust me-- they have the records once you can get them back to Italy! Amazing!

Happy Hunting!

His name was Joseph Brandi and lived in Pittsburgh PA. He married Josephine Pelligrino(I'm not sure if that's spelled right)
Could he be the Brandi your looking for?

Just for the record, the tree as laid out in the previous message is incorrect.

Raffaele (Ralph) and Giuseppe (Joseph) were the children of Vincenzo Brandi and Maria Domenica Rapa. Michele (Michael) and Salvatore (Sam) were the children of Daniele Brandi and Maria Chiara Federico. All were born in San Potito Sannitico, Italy. Vincenzo and Daniele were brothers, the children of Filippo Brandi and Maria Navarro. When Michael came to the U.S. in 1895-6 or thereabouts, he moved in for a while with his uncle Vincenzo in Saginaw.

Hi, Kris,

Any information from your father yet? I've been digging through microfilms of birth and marriage records for Saginaw in the past few days and finding a bunch of Brandis from the early 1900s. I think I've got a rough idea of the first couple of generations, something like this:

Vincenzo (Vincent) Brandi
Maria (Mary) Rappa had 4 sons

Raffaele Albino (Ralph Albert) Brandi
Giuseppi (Joseph) Brandi
Michael Brandi
Salvatore (Sam) Brandi

They may have had a daughter, but that's not clear yet; I found a Clara Brandi in the marriage index in the 1890s. The missing 1890 Census would have really helped here if it hadn't been destroyed in a fire....

If I understand correctly, Salvatore (Sam) is your grandfather, and he brought his family to America probably around 1910-1912, after the birth of your uncle Angelo in Italy in 1909, but before the birth of your aunt Irene in Saginaw in 1912. Yes?

Unfortunately, the records I'm looking at end sometime in 1914, so I'm at a loss to place the half-dozen other Brandis born in Saginaw between then and when the index ends in 1922 (at least until I get around to looking at the 1920 Census for Saginaw, which I haven't done yet).

Cousin!

Neat!

Let's see, if I have this figured out properly, you and I would be second cousins once removed.

An SS-5 is the application that one fills out to get a Social Security number. If you know your (deceased) relative's Social Security Number, you can get a copy of their original application form (form number SS-5), which contains things like birthplace, birthday, and parents names, as well as who their employer was at the time they filled out the form. You can see a copy of your uncle's form on my web site at http://www.brandi.org/geneablogy/ (and no, that's not a typo, the explanation is at the bottom of the page). If you search for "Angelo", you'll find his name and a link to a scan of his SS-5 about halfway down the page.

You'll also find an e-mail address where you can reach me on the main page of the site.

Brandis in Saginaw

Kris,

I'm currently researching Brandis in Saginaw. My great grandfather, Ralph Albert Brandi Sr. (Italian name Raffaele Albino Brandi) came to Saginaw from San Potito Sannitico, Italy sometime before 1893; I haven't pinned down the exact date yet. I believe that his parents, Vincenzo Brandi and Maria Rappa, may have also come to Saginaw at the same time; I find a Vincent and Mary Brandi in Saginaw in both the 1900 and 1910 Censuses. (I also find a 28-year old Michael Brandi in Saginaw in 1910, but I haven't figured out who he is yet, either.) And I have an SS-5 for Angelo Joseph Brandi of Detroit who gave his parents names as Salvatore Samuel Brandi and Raffaella Pito and his birthplace as San Potito Sannitico. My aunt tells me that her father, Ralph Brandi Jr., used to talk to an Angelo Brandi and referred to him as his cousin, but I have yet to make a definitive link between the two families. Sam and Raffaella do not appear in the 1900 or 1910 Censuses (and Angelo was born in 1909 in Italy), so they must have come over after 1910, and I haven't gotten to the 1920 Census yet. I'm reasonably sure there's a link there somewhere, I just haven't found it yet. Do you know who Sam's parents were?

My husband, Dennis Brandi, is the grandson of Marcelina Brandi. She had, I believe, 11 children. My husband's father was John Brandi (aka Juan) who died in 1978 at the age of 42 years. Anyone related to this family, please advise as I would like to find relatives on his father's side of the family.
