My Great Great Grandfather Josef Brandl was born about 1852 somewhere in Germany. We know he came to America and lived in the New York city area. We do not have any info on his wife. They had at least one son Joseph born around 1873. We do not know if there were any other children. Both Josef and his son were cabinet makers. Joseph Jr. married Katherine Schlatterer and they had 6 children. If anyone has more info in this family please let me know.
Hi,

I have no information on any of the Brandner or Prantner you mention.

Policarp Scheidt seems to have been the name of a person linked to castle (ruin) Schmirnberg. See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgruine_Schmirnberg

Kriedfeuer (accurately Kreitfeuer, also named Laermfeuer) is not Latin but old German (Feuer = fire) and means a signal station for the purposes you already mentioned.

That's all I can contribute
Tilman

Questions for you..

I am descended from the Brandner, Prantner family and am on the hunt to connect a coat of arms given in Ingolstadt to a Georg Prantner in the mid 1600's. There is an assumption that the family came from Austria (the recent generations are from Bavaria).I just found an entry online about a Georg Christoph Prantner who inherited or sold Policarp Scheidt in 1622. Continued research seems to connect that with an Austrian Castle, known as Schmimberg (and a lot of variations like Castrum Smilriburch and a connection to Kriedfeuer which in the Latin means a warning of fire and fire being used t signal the approach of danger... Do you have any insight on this?

My great grandfather Franz Brandl(born 1845) and his wife Barbara Schimmer(born 1851) emigrated to the USA about 1883 with two children, Theresa 12 and Joseph 1. They settled in Appleton, WI. Franz was killed in an industrial accident in Feb of 1886. Barbara died in 1901 in Milwaukee. She had married John Jungbeck in 1889. Theresa married my Grandfather Henry Vander Linden in 1893.
I am seeking information concerning the place of residence of Franz and Barbara in Bohemia

Hi Alice (?),

a 'general area' doesn't help. You'll need a specific location, townname or address. All the records you're trying to find are church records, no general index available.

For Vienna I suggest to post to that board at http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.austria.Prov....

You can also look at the detailed Board Information page there, which will give you some hints as to where you could continue your research.

Brandl is a quite common first name in Austria, the online phone directory has some 1800 Brandl entries - also in and around Vienna - like for instance me :-)

Tilman

If you are correct about the Vienna area the following will not be of interest.

My ggg grandmother was Maria Theresia Brandl (nee Matin or Martin) born Sept 18 1794 and died Nov 6 1846, both in Passau, Bayern.

Her husband was Johann Georg Brandl born Oct 9, 1778 in Freinberg, Austria, died May 27, 1877 in Passau. Freinberg is near Linz in Oberösterreich, Austria and east of Passau. We have not contacted the Diocese of Linz.

They were married on Aug 24, 1819 in Passau at St. Stephens. We obtained most of this information by mail from archives of the Diocese of Passau.

They had four children: Johann born 1820, Agatha Maria, born 1823 (my great grandmother who immigrated to Iowa in 1855), Konrad, b 1824 and Maria Theresia b 1830

Theresa Brandl in Wisconsin( Brandl, Vander Linden, Schimmer, Freidel)

My husband's grandmother was Theresa Brandl, daughter of Franz Brandl and Barbara Schimmer. She was born 12 Sept, 1871 in Austria. We have been told she came to Wisconsin with her sister whose given name we don't know and that they came from Vienna. Theresa married Henry Vander Linden and they lived and raised their family in Appleton. They were devout Catholics, but we can find no marriage records either in the courthouse records or the parish records. Theresa died 23 Oct 1944 in Appleton and in her obituary she is survived by her children and a sister, Mrs. Michael Freidel of Milwaukee. We would love to find out more about her and her family. Can anyone help with this?

Have either of you communicated with Ray Hilgart?
He has a passion for Eisenstein. He has been trying to connect the families from the town of Eisenstein in Price Co, Taylor Co. and Auburndale. There are many common names. After visiting my cousin last weekend, I learned he has connect for the Price and Taylor Co., Auburndale is tenuous. Some common names include Thums, Dums, Schreiner, Brandle, Karl Linsmeier and Hilgart. All these families are from Eisenstein,Hammern and Seewiesen.
Dori

Donna - I don't believe we have ever communicated, but I have heard your name from Marsha (Brandl) Held. My wife's name is also Donna (Crotteau) Brandl.

My great grandfather was Michael Sr., Grandfather Anton, Father Martin, and I have visited Theresia's grave marker several times. I have tried to "etch" the German writing on her marker and have some of the words but not the full translation.

Marsha and I are stuck at Michael Sr.'s father Joseph Brandl in our search. Any insight back to Eisenstein and our lineage? Same question for George Schreiner and Theresia Weiner?

William Brandl

I know there was another Schreiner family in Auburndale. So far not connected to mine. The two family groups I have in Auburndale were Barbara Schreiner who married Joseph Raab (she was my grandfather aunt) and Barbara (Linsmeier) Schreiner, my Grandfather's sister (half sister) who married Louis Karl.
Brandel is a Theresa who married Joseph Thums. My connection there is Anna Dums who lived in Hammern. Thumbs, Thums, Thomas, Dums are all variation of the same name.
Hilgart is also woven in the mix.
Dori

Hi,

in case you haven't seen this, and especially if your family's roots were/are in Europe, here's a page that has maps for a few countries:

http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/brandl.html

Alternatively you may enter other names on top of the page and see the results below. There are links for Germany, Switzerland and Poland too on the bottom. Unfortunately in German language only, but a map doesn't need much translation to be understood. May be different with the details that are shown for each name ...

Regards
Tilman

I found your post very interesting, my Father's name was Johann Anton Brandl (born 30/06/1926) in Rosstal Bavaria, and his mothers name was Katharina Brandl, on his birth Certificate it says that she was a resident in Rosstal, but shows no Fathers name so I presume he was illigitimate, he talked about his Grandmother who's name was Freda who also lived in Rosstal he also talked about Ernst and Franz, I have been trying to trace this side of the family for some time now so I hope we have a conection.
Regards
Robert Brandl (UK)
