Immediately following high school he went to work for Erie Malleable Iron, where he later became foreman and ultimately supervisor of the Pattern Shop.
I have followed most of those leads and have not been able to verify. I have a 1880 census in Fannin County, Texas that has a CC Brandon as head of household and there is an AG Brandon who was born in 1872 listed as CC's son. I have been sort of running on the assumption that this might be my great-grandfather at age 8, but have no proof since the census only lists initials. I do know that they were in Texas by 1910 because I have a marriage record and census record showing that AG and Minnie's children were all born in Texas shortly after the turn of the century. I did find -- yesterday -- a funeral notice on find-a-grave.com for AG. He had a brother named E. L. Brandon so that is NEW info that I will follow through on. Thanks for the quick responses.

Also, looking in the state census records for MS for this timeframe, no Brandon in Lafayette Co MS pops up. When you get out a map, Lafayette is in the northern area of MS.
Pontotoc county is on the east of Lafayette, Panola is on the immediate right of Lafayette.
Maps are great genealogy tools.

Here are names from households in 1860 Mississippi State Census:

Name: Christopher Brandon
Residence: 1860 - New Albany P. O., Pontotoc County, MS

Name: James Brandon
Residence: 1860 - Popes St.Ation, Panola County, MS

Name: James J. Brandon
Residence: 1860 - Chesterville P. O., Pontotoc County, MS
Name: John T. Brandon
Residence: 1860 - Chesterville P. O., Pontotoc County, MS

Name: Joseph Brandon
Residence: 1860 - Popes St.Ation, Panola County, MS
Name: Thomas Brandon
Residence: 1860 - Poplar Springe P.
This doesn't clear things up but who knows?

In the 1880 census for Lafayette Co, MS, A.G. Brandon is listed as 19 years old - did he fudge his age in later years or is this a mistake? He's boarding in the Bettis household with teens about his age, though. I see no returns for Brandon in Lafayette County for 1870. This man says both of his parents were born in Mississippi, though, so their names should be on the earlier censuses somewhere!

I'd explore the Bettis family and the history of Lafayette County's 74th District to figure out how he came to be there, attending school with Mrs. F. H. Bettis' kids.

At least, it seems this should be your man.

Sally Brandon

He was born in Mississippi and died in North Texas, lived most of his life in Grayson County, Texas. Married to Minnie Jane Williams, and later Mollie ??. Had four children. The story is he was on his way back from Bowie, Texas, got caught in a bad storm, spent the night in a boarding house in St Jo, Texas, and was found dead of heart attack the next morning by the landlady. He is buried in St. Jo. I can find nothing in the way of an obituary. Have some possible leads on relatives but nothing that can definitively tie them to AG Brandon. He was my great-grandfather. He is the reason I signed up for Ancestry and I have found nothing on him. Every other line has come easily. This one is a dead end. Anybody with ancestors in Grayson, Cooke, or Montague Counties in North Texas, please respond and let's see if we have some common names: Allison, Gilbert, Walter, Dallas, Ottis (Otto), Frances, Vada, etc.

Thanks.

Jarrett Brandon sighting 1783

Sorry, Jeanie, looks like this is the earlier Jarrett and not the patriarch of your Brandon, Florida line. What I read gives your Jarrett a b. 1786, in from England, possible wife Jane Smith?
This apparently goes with an older Jarrett who married a Margaret Bell.

10 May 1783 deed for land in Guilford Co, NC (Larry Brandon says now Rockingham County) - recorded Guilford County Feb. 1784.
Via attorney John "McCarell" to John "Gransham" (both of Guilford County) from Jarret Brandon and his wife "Margret" of Washington County, North Carolina. They had moved to now-eastern Tennessee, soon to become the State of Franklin instead of North Carolina. It is NOT the current Washington County, NC in the eastern part of the state.
For 100 pounds, 320 acres on both sides of Wolf Island Creek, a branch of the Dan River.
Mentioned: John Bell's line (father-in-law?), William Young's line, Luke "Barnett's" line and Hilton's line.
Witnesses Isham Browder and Charles Harris (apparently Washington County).
A power of attorney dated 10 May 1783 is recorded later, on 25 Nov 1789, just after a slightly different indenture/sale is registered for the same property. John "McCarrel" is now mentioned as of Rockingham County, the price is now 30 pounds and the bounds mention Luke "Bernerd's Corner," William Young's line and John Bell's line. The buyer's name is now spelled John "Granger."

Thanks to Larry Brandon and his keen eye for Brandon migrations!

Sally Brandon

This is the line the Brandon DNA Project calls the "Old Thomas" line. B.C. 1740 d.1791 Greene Co, TN, he married Jane (probably the widow English). Son Thomas m. Nancy Mullinex and had this Nathaniel of the bible. Daughter Mary Ann married John Lea/Lee. Son John Brandon and presumed stepson William English were apparently killed by Indians in 1788.

I just have a short tree but I see no Alabama branch and there isn't room for another John born when your man was, anyway.

Disappointed to hear you haven't been able to locate your man yet!

Best of luck,
Sally Brandon

Robert was in the 1800 tax list for Nicholas Co. He was in the 1810 and 1820 census in Nicholas Co as well. As the story goes from what I found they did move to Hendricks, Shelby Co. Indiana. My James got married in Owingsville, Bath Co. Kentucky in 1825 to Hannah Burch. They moved to Hendricks, indiana. That is where I first found James M Nickle. They stayed there till 1844. His son Joseph B bought land in Iowa in 1841. In the 1856 census James stated he has been in Iowa for 11 years.
I will have to look for the uncle in Kentucky and Indiana. As for the Nickle family in Pennsylvania. I'm looking into that.
James's son James Robert said on the 1870 census his father was born in Pennsylvania and mother was from Virginia. That makes sense now because it stumpt the family for years. A daughter that slipped through the census stated she was born in PA later says Indiana. I'm still wondering why my James's middle name was Mills? Was his family part of the Nickle Mills? Just a few question yet to be answered.

Pennsylvania recently put their land surveys online, I'd only had access to the registers. See them through the link here, on Page 2 of the "N"s for York County (which Adams was before 1800) and the Huntington guy is transcribed as "James Nichole." (James, your ancestor's name! Was he named after his grandfather? They also spell Huntington wrong.) Take the numbers in the last column, C 164 17, go back to the portal, choose Copied Surveys and look up the Nichols plot there in Huntington Twp. You can see the clerk called him Nichols in the survey, although the drawing doesn't. Weird "S"s? I know those neighbors. They're close to the Brandons.
The Warrantee Township Maps at the portal, unfortunately, don't include Adams County. I have it though, and will look at it later in the week and email it to you.

http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/lan...

This branch of the Brandons was well off.

Look above Mary's link I gave you, at Mary Brandon Nickles' uncle Joseph (JOSEPH?)! He took his family to Bourbon Co, KY - which became Nicholas County. Did your couple join them? They're not much older than Mary herself. Did they name a kid in uncle Joe's honor because he didn't let them down? And Uncle Joe's kids moved to ... Indiana!

Instead of your Mary still being around Huntington Twp, as I'd thought, her brother knew where she was, with Uncle Joe, so he included her in his will?

Too many coincidences, I'm thinking. Lancaster County is wrong - they came from Adams County. Or maybe Robert came from over the river in Lancaster County. How'd he meet Mary? And why didn't the family like him, who were his people?

Where are they in the 1800 census? If they had their first kid in KY in 1802.... And where do you find Nickles/Nickels in the 1790 census? PA, but where? I have Robert b. Huntington Twp. but can't get my folder out right now. Maybe it's because there are Nickles on the tax lists there or in the 1790 census.

My two cents, anyway. Sounds like you're on the verge of a breakthrough. Keep us posted :)

Sally Brandon
Coordinator, FTDNA Brandon Project

Here is what I found today.
Miss Margaret Jane Nickel, daughter of Robert and Mary Nickel, natives of Lancaster Co., Penn., of Scotch and Irish descent, who moved to Nicholas Co., Ky., where Mrs. Doble was born Jan 27, 1802. In 1826, her parents came to Shelby Co., Ind., settling in Jackson Township, where her mother died in 1829; her father moving to Hendricks Township and dying there in 1836.

http://www.shelbycountyindiana.org/biographies/bio_henry_dob...

This is the same story for Joseph Brandon Nickel but parents unknow.
Joseph Brandon Nickel was born in Nicholas
county, Kentucky, on July 4th 1808, and
there resided during his youth, remov-
ing when in his eighteenth year with his
parents to Shelbyville, Shelby county,
Indiana, where he lived until 1843. During his residence in Indiana he rose to considerable political prominence.
http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofmcdonou00spri/history...

As for my James when he was married he was able to buy land right away. In 1832 he bought land for $800. That is alot of money in those times. As a married couple he bought land every place they moved too. So this is how I can tract him.
Did you say that the family was well off? Which one did you mean? For him being a blacksmith at the time I would not expect him to pay cash of $800 for 80 acres. I knew his family had money but had no idea where to look.
They ended up moving to Iowa. My g-great grandfather moved to California in 1905 with his family. He died shortly after that from a "gone bad" surgery where he died. His widow had his Dr. put in jail. So I'm know looking for anything and everything that can help me. My family had tried to look but got no where. I found a distant cousin that I found. Now where both looking for clues.
And yes the men in the (Nickel)family can still be quite...honest! As for my James if he is the son of Robert. He divorced his wife in 1855 because of her change of religion to Babtist. So yes I understand the Brother completely.
Des

Des,
It sounds like you may have found your couple in my John Brandon b.1662 tree. I do not know where they went although I didn't search the PA censuses for them or even the townships around Huntington Twp. to see who the Nickles were. If the link below are your people they may have left due to bad blood between them and Mary's family, as reflected in the will, for heaven's sake! of her brother George. (The family in this time frame was quite well off.) George wrote his will in 1815 and it implies Mary Brandon "Nickel" was still in the area.
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/r/a/Sally-A-Bra...

I'd say it's a definite lead to examine Huntington Township and those next to it to track down these Nickles and see if it's the same family.

Good luck!
Sally

Sally,
By chance the John and Mary Hall's Daughter Mary b:1773; Ever get married to a Robert Nickle/Nickel? I found a Robert Nickel in Nicholas Co. Kentucky in 1800-1820. And they moved to Shelby Co indiana abt 1830. The wife was not on the 1830 census. But the same amount of children were. Mary Hall and Robert if this is them they had 2 sons and 4 daughters. Do you have any info on Mary and Robert that they have moved to Kentucky?
The reason I ask is that a Joseph Brandon Nickel was in Shelbyville, Shelby Co.,IN next to my James Nickel and Robert Nickel in Hendricks, Shelby Co. IN. My James M Nickel named his first son joseph B. And his 2nd son was named James Robert Nickle.

Des (Nickels)

I have a John Brandon b abt 1804 (probably Virginia USA) and he has a son Hugh. He is first documented in 1830 Tennessee marrying Elizabeth Henson. They had kids including Walter, Charles, John Adam, Luther Benton, moved around quite a bit, and lived in Al, Tx, MO and Arkansas, and the kids were in Texas by abt 1875. We believe they were of Irish or Scots Irish descent,(family background, oral traditions and stories) but since we cant document before 1830 we dont have much to go on.
John and Hugh are evidently both somewhat common names for Brandon males.

Wish I could help you out.
Diane

Brandon in Jews and Muslims in Colonial British America (McFarland, 2012)
Among the Sephardic surnames in the Caribbean identified by Arbell are: Houel/Howell, Parquet/Parke, Periera, Athias, Molina (Miller), Le Tov, Barjuda, Pinshiron, d’Andeade/ Andrews (sometimes Andrus), Louis, daGama, Bueno/Good, Cohen, Lopez, Gabay, Israel, Vaz/Vass, Nunez, Flores, Betancourt, Sale (Morocco), de La Roche, Beekman, de Vries, Lorenzo, Enoch, Ely, da Sylva (Forest, Woods), Brandon,
Omitting the obviously Hebrew and European Jewish surnames in Stern, some of the surprising entries into the annals of Colonial American Jewry include: Adams, Alexander, Allen, Andrews, Ball (Aramaic “lord”), Barnett (from Issachar), Barrett, Blackwell, Brandon,
Recent scholarship has also brought to light the presence of Converso Jews among the French colonists in North America. We shall see several of these, such as Arnau, Alexander, Brandon, Cassel (Casal, a sept of Clan Kennedy), and Noble, in the British colonies as well.
The history of Savannah Jewry lies beyond the purview of this book. But to lend weight to the suspicion that Georgia may have been the “most Jewish” of the colonies, let us recount some of the famous Jews in her history. We have already noted the silk experts Paul Amatis and Joseph Ottolenghi, who, strictly speaking, were crypto-Jews. A practicing Jew, Abraham de Lyon (De Leon), who arrived with the Bevis Marks Jews, was hired to nourish viniculture after the first vintner failed. His wife was Esther Nunes, daughter of Moses Nunes, a prominent Mason and customs officer for the port. Their children married into the Jewish mercantile aristocracy of the Colonies – Levy, Cohen, Moses, Mordecai, Brandon, Seixas, Hendricks, Machado, Phillips and Russell. One descendant, Raphael Moses of Columbus, Georgia, is considered “the father of Georgia’s peach industry.”

I went to your 1880 census record, and I noticed both Andrew & Martha are from Alabama. Do you have their marriage record? DO you have anything more on Andrew's parents?

Also, they are next to Newkirk family in that 1880 IL census. The AL Brandons and Newkirks intermarry and are very close through several generations and branches. You might look up more about next door neighbor Thomas Newkirk age 53 b MO. I notice he has a son names James, and your Andrew and Martha have a son named Thomas. I know that it may also be a coincidence, but this Mr Newkirk MAY be a connection to some more Brandon cousins.
Best of luck.

Re: James W. BRANDEN 1868 Illinois,1880 South Pass, IL CENSUSfather Andrew mother Martha in 1880 census

I am excited about this, because my Brandons have some same demographics, moved to the same places about the same time, and are probably related to the same branch. I say probably because we have no DNA from this line to check anymore that I know of.
my maternal line greatgrandmother's father was John Adam Brandon, b abt 1848 in MO. his parents were John Brandon b 1804 (VA?)who married Eliz Henson in 1832 Roan Co TN, and lived in AL, TX, MO, & Ark, before many of the adult kids settled in Texas by about 1872. Charles L Brandoon (oldest son of John) married Eliz Wright of Illinois and lived in California for a short time before returning to live with the brothers in Texas. Walter W Brandon (older son of John) lived in Ark most of his life. Hugh (youngest child) lived with Walter in Arkansas before moving to Texas to be near brothers Charlies and John Adam. With the family along some of this same journey is Rufus Lafayette Brandon, son of Hugh Harvey Brandon, who later lived nearby the brothers in Texas with his family.

I have been trying to place siblings and parents of my earliest known ancestor John Brandon, and looking for places in known families where he might fit in. We dont know much about the Joseph Brandon you mention or this James. Could you give some more dates, locations please?

Do you know why Joseph was in Arkansas?
I think our branch of Brandons were there about 1869-early 1870s. Before that in Missouri, but we know they were also in Al in 1840s.

I would love to know any new lines to check and see where my guy might fit in with. I have a whole lot of parallel Brandon info that might help you as well.
Best,
Diane Shaw

James W. and his family are listed as Branden in the 1880 South Pass, IL Census. The rest of the family are later seen as Branham, Brandon, and Branam. They had migrated from AL and end up in Lauderdale Co., TN. Have information and pic's of younger children in family. SEARCHING for cousins from this line. From DNA we know this line is related to Joseph Brandon that migrated to ARK and Hugh Harvey Brandon, Benjamin and Richard Branham.

Larry Brandon helped me with this one. It was Thomas Brandon's will of 6 Jan 1833, Stokes County, NC referencing wife Jane Allen and money in hand of Thomas Burton. She was Jane Allen Pulliam, Thomas Burton was his sister Jean's husband and Thomas is the son of Francis Brandon b.c.1725. Thomas b.c.1760. I have just one confirmed child, son Joseph b.1789 who is referenced in grandfather Joseph Pulliam's 1821 will but must have died before his father. Thomas Brandon only mentions his wife in his will.
Does this jibe with what you have?
Sally

My husbands Branham's were in Stokes, NC before migrating to TN. At the Branam DNA Project we have several Brandon matches. My husbands Ggrandfather in 1850 Jackson Co., AL is listed as Branham, 1860 Brandon. He and his brother are listed as Brandon's in the Jackson Co., AL marriage records but both families settled on the Branam spelling later down the line. At the Branam DNA Project Y-Results page ours is the Tan group at the top of the page.

I would like to know more about your James Brandon who married Caroline.
My Brandons are somehow related to the Brandons who were in TN, Alabama and went to MO and Ark and later TX.

My Earliest proven Brandon is John Brandon born abt 1804ish in VA or TN who married Elizabeth Henson in 1832 Roan CO TN, who lived in Alabama before moving to Missouri abt 1849/50. here is a brief timeline. Do you see any similarities?

The family was in
from 1830-at least 1834, Tennessee (marriage, birth of Charles)
1836-1840 in Alabama (Birth of Frances Margaret, Walter W.,Ann; nothing for sure for 1840 census)
1843 in Texas for birth of daughter Sarah(may be incorrect)
1845 in Missouri (in MO for births of sons Benton, John Adam, Hugh Frances, dau Mary.)
1850: Dallas Co MO census
1860 -Polk County census (Charles married Elizabeth Wright of Illinois and they went to California for a short time.)
1868 - Franklin County Missouri state census(the last known sighting of the parents John and Elizabeth, we are desperately looking for death & burial info.)
1870 - several brothers are in white County Arkansas
1872 - most of the family seems to have arrived in Texas (one brother still in Ark.)

They are somehow related to Rufus Lafayette Brandon, son of Hugh Harvey Brandon (Alabama.)

All help finding siblings for my John Brandon b 1804ish and family members of his kids would be great.

Thanks-
Diane

Shirley, you probably already have this information. But I am a great, great grandson of Joseph H & Margaret Ann Rodden Brandon. James, was Joseph H's father and Caroline Bennett was his mother. Joseph & Margaret Ann had 5 children. James A, who died in the mid 1890's. William who died in 1927 in Clay County, Arkansas. Martha Ella, who died in SE Missouri in the mid 1890's. Thomas Albert, my great grandfather, who died in 1938 in Clay County, Arkansas. Elizabeth Jane (Janey) who died in 1961 in Clay County, Arkansas. Joseph H died in 1916 in Clay County, Arkansas & Margaret Ann Rodden Brandon died in 1931 in Clay County, Arkansas. I am still not exactly sure what happened to James Brandon, Joseph H's father. He is listed in the 1860 census in Fourche Lafave Twnshp, Perry County, Arkansas but his wife, Caroline Bennett is listed in the 1870 census in the home of their daughter, Malissa Patrick in South Illinois, as widowed. If I can be of any further assistance, my email address is mcben246@yahoo.com. God bless you! sb

I was researching a lot and facinated with my husband's Brandon family. I have my mother's line both sides back to 1700's My Dad's family was a frustrating road block. The Clark family also had brick walls. The Brandon research was consuming. Then being wife and Mom took front row.compounded by a computer virus that took the joy away with the loss of data. My Dad passed away this spring. To honor him I picked it back up and have had luck this time...but those Brandon's with all the mystery still draws me. I believe it will take more hands on research to unravel who belongs to who thank you for your time and interest... carinchambers@hotmail.com
