I am a descendant of John Samuel Brannon 1845 Gilmer,WV - 1905 Mason, WV. He married Jane Catherine Foglesong 14 Dec 1866 Jackson, WV. His parents are Samuel C Brannon and Catherine Hardway. They married in 1844 Gilmer, WV. The following excerpt was taken from, " History of The Great Kanawha Valley With Family History And Biographical Sketches"
John S Brannon dates his birth from February 1, 1845, his place of nativity being Gilmore County, WV. His father was Samuel Brannon, born May 27, 1823 in the county above mentioned. He was the son of John and Sarah (Flenner) Brannon both natives of old Virginia. The children of John Brannon and wife are George and Samuel. The last mentioned came to Jackson County, WV, in 1845 where he has since resided. In 1844 he married, in Gilmore County, to Catherine Hardway and these are their children: John S, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Nancy, Hannah, Louisa, Nettie and Dora. His son John S Brannon, who is subject of our sketch, came to Mason County in 1882, where he remained for two years, then went to Putnam county, where he lived for three years and returned to Mason in 1887. His marriage took place December 16, 1866, in Mason county, to Jane C Foglesong, The names of their children are: William A, Mary C, Maggie L, Nancy E, George R, Otho D, Herbert V, and Oran C. Mr Brannon has followed the profession of teaching for 23 years. Meantime, he has been engaged in farming and merchandising for two years. In 1864 he enlisted in the Ninth West Virginia Infantry, and was discharged in 1865. He made a good soldier, served faithfully and loyally and took part in the following battles: Cloyd Mountain, Lynchburg, Carter's Farm, First Winchester, Martinsburg, Berryville, Second Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek. Mr Brannon and his wife are members of the United Brethern Church, and are highly respected people in their community where they reside.
