My Father was Charlie Brannon,1904-1934 (died of pneumonia), was farmer & mill worker. His Father was William Brannon, Jr.,1873-1925. I was born in Davidson and lived here most of my life, a retired accountant. I've been to Unaka and saw my Grandfather's house but not to Hanging Dog. About all the Brannon family moved to the Mooresville, N.C. area in the 1920's. Goley worked in the mill and later bought a grocery store. Joe owned a dry cleaning shop and Bertha and her husband, Jack Burgess, ran a Boarding house. George and Lee were in the army and after retirement, George ran a restaurant and Lee worked for Joe. Nancy Mae Belle is a housewife and the only survivor.
The info on George was gotten from the internet-mostly message boards. He is somewhat of a mystery with only verbal history passed through the Brannon family.
This info believes George,1756-1827, came from Ireland with 3 or 4 brothers - Johnny, Edd, Larkin & Marion. He married a Cherokee Indian girl named Alkerny meaning "Acorn Eyes". He had 5 or 8 children: Larkin 1800, Joseph 1801 or 9, Julian 1801 or 9, William 1811, Marion 1813, and John 1815. George was a gold miner, served in the Revolutionary War and was granted 640 acres. He was buried at Old Coker Creek (maybe you could verify that). I understand they have Brannon reunions at Coker Creek and they passed out a genealogy report back to George. I would like to have a copy. Let me know if you find anything further on our Grandpaw George!
