I believe my family (Howard Daniel Branson was my father) visited your family on several occasions when we were young. There was a joke in the family that some of us looked so much like some of you that my father actually punished one of my sisters for something one of you did when we were visiting.

I have a little bit on J L Branson. He married Ella Mitonia Slate 8/18/1895 listed in the Patrick County Court house. J L born about 1869 Patrick County, Ella born 11/1869 Patrick. They had three children: Ollie 4/1895, Roy 7/20/1900 and a Charley which I have no dates on. Parents listed as W A Branson and Elizabeth. Does this help? If so can you tell me more about the children? I am related to the Slate side.
Branson and Fremantle Connection

Hi there,

I'm trying to follow a connection between the Branson and Fremantle families of the UK. My husband is a Branson however all the males in his family for the last few generations have the middle names Charles Fremantle and we know that the Fremantle bit has some connection to the city of Fremantle in Western Australia. My husband's father was Geoffrey Charles Fremantle Branson - I understand his Geoffrey's father's name was Charless Fremantle Branson (wife was Ada Florence Faulkner?-Branson). Charles' father was William Powell Branson and we think William's wife was Charlotte Victoria Fremantle (father was William Fremantle). If anyone can find a connection to Charles Howe Fremantle that would be great! Thanks so much. Annemarie.

E mail is Donpeacock@aol.com if you would like to contact him. He and J.J. Pierce in New Jersey are both good researcers.
There is a Wm. A. Branson, age 7, listed in the 1860 Guilford, NC census with probable mother Martha J. Branson and Susan age 4 and Elizabeth age 2.

Wm. A. Branson is listed as born in Stokes Co., NC.

Could this be your Wm. A. Branson?

If so, I have a feeling they were part of the Maryland Branson group and not related to those who went to Gasconade, MO. It would be of interest though, if one of the Maryland Bransons was married in Patrick Co., VA. We have DNA tests of the Maryland Bransons that could be compared to yours, if there is a male with the last name of Branson in your family willing to take the test.

Your posting is of great interest to me. Please write to me at OregonGal9@aol.com

There were some Bransons living near Patrick Co., VA and Carroll Co., VA (formerly part of Patrick Co) in the mid and late 1800's. I have reason to believe they were related to the Bransons who moved from Patrick/Carroll, VA to TN to Gasconade Co., MO. They were John A. Branson and wife Sarah Surratt who remained in VA.

John and Sarah were connected to the Gasconade Bransons in Patrick, VA because the same person signed marriage bonds for both families.

The name Emma Slate in your posting is also of interest. A possible relative, Sarah Slate, married Asberry Shockley of nearby Grayson Co., VA. (probably around 1855-1860). Asberry's niece, Elizabeth Shockley, married Greenberry Branson, son of John A. Branson and Sarah Surratt.

The Shockley family was also associated with the Bransons in Gasconade Co., MO.

The Bransons who were in and near Guilford, NC were also possibly related to the Gasconade Bransons. They were descendants of Thomas Branson and Rebecca Borden. Also listed in the 1880 census in Guilford, NC were Daniel Branson and wife Julia. They were the right age to be Daniel Branson and Julia Ann Coble.

Daniel was the great-grandson of Levi Branson and Mary Maynor who had ties to the early Patrick Co, VA Bransons via common acquaintances, signer on marriage bonds, etc.

It is possible that your W. A. Branson was related to John A. Branson and Sarah Surratt. John and Sarah were married May 17, 1827 in Patrick Co., VA. Some of these people went back and forth between SW Virginia and Northern NC just across the border.

Your name makes it difficult to know if you are male or female. If you are male, or have a male relative with the last name of Branson, it would be EXTREMELY helpful if a Branson DNA test could be arranged. I have been searching for years to find a male descendant of these Bransons to take the test. If you can't afford the test, others may be willing to pay for it.

Thanks,

Sandra Branson Young

Christiana Branson -- Baltimore, 1750s

I'm looking for any kind of information at all on Christiana Branson who married Thomas Rowles, 2 Feb 1787 at the Zion German Lutheran Church in Baltimore. (Is Branson a German-origin name? Rowles is English.) There were a number of Rowles families in and around Baltimore, and Rowles researchers have information on most of them -- but nothing at all on this Branson connection. Christiana apparently was born in 1756, which would make her 31 at the time of her marriage. So she may have been married before; Branson may have been a first husband's name, not her own maiden name. Thomas & Christiana moved to Steuben Co, New York about 1793 (enticed by a land company), and she died there 25 Jul 1803. Her grave marker (the first in the town's new cemetery) says "age 47 years." I have found only one Branson with a Baltimore connection (William, in the 1790 census), and a few in St. Marys County and Charles County. Any sort of lead to further information on Christiana or a Branson family in Baltimore in the 1750s would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Irena Branson of Mariposa County, CA

About Nancy Clark -- the 1880 household with Nancy Clark and her son Hiram P. Clark is intriguing. Irena did have a son named Hiram Scott whose age is a perfect match. It might be her. But it is not a lock. There are many problems.

1) I have no other example of Irena being called Nancy.

2) There is no (other) indication Hiram Scott ever came west from Missouri, and Irena's modern-day descendants are of the opinion he died in childhood.

3) The census taker would have had to get Hiram's surname wrong. This is certainly a common sort of error -- assuming that a child would have his parent's surname -- but it's still an issue.

4) The household is in Cathey's Valley. Irena's ranch was adjacent to the Washington Mine property at Quartzburg, a few miles from Hornitos. In modern-day terms, Cathey's Valley is very close to there, but in 1880, the two spots were a stiff horse-ride away, and not in the same election district.

5) Irena's age is wrong, showing her as born in 1820. This can be attributed to bad informing or guessing, but it still is suspicious.

6) Irena's parents' birthplaces say Tennessee. Should be Virginia at least in the case of her father. This, too, could be informant error, but it doesn't help that the discrepancy is there.

So the jury is still out on this one.

Dave
I'm not quite sure what's going on, but I've learned of three replies to this thread, and none of them made it directly to me (they had to be forwarded by others), nor do they appear here on this version of the Bulletin Board that I'm looking at, and that I originally posted on. I see only my own postings. I'm using the Ancestry.com portal rather than Rootsweb -- perhaps this is the issue. Another factor is that any email through the portal goes to my wife's work email account, and sometimes it takes her several days to forward stuff. In any case, please, everyone, this is meant to be a public discussion. Try to answer via Bulletin Board postings, not email.

Thank you to John B. for the tip about Nancy Clark in the 1880 census. Got that one (indirectly) and am checking on it now.

Dave
Re: Irena Branson of Mariposa County, CA

I believe I've found the answer to the use of Irene to refer to Irena. That usage all stems from the same source, as near as I can tell. All through her life, from Tennessee to Missouri to Mariposa County, she was called Irena or Rena. But this name wasn't used much by a couple of daughters and the children of those daughters, who began living in Nevada County, CA in the 1890s. This Nevada County group included her daughter Mattie, son-in-law Thomas Reynolds, and remarried son-in-law Thomas Edwin Marshall, and the various grandchildren. To them, Irena was "Mama" or "Grandma Scott." She went to live with Mattie at the end of her days, and when she died, a name was needed for the obituary and the death certificate. Whoever served as informant supplied the name Irene rather than Irena.

Toward the end of his life, her grandson George A. Marshall wrote a wonderful article about his youth in the Mother Lode, which was published in 1964 in Journal of the West. The text is now part of the Marshall family profile on MariposaResearch.net. George used Irene as his grandmother's name.

Together George's article, the death record, and the obituary have become the main sources of information about Irena, and so the name Irene has stuck. As I say, I don't believe this is correct, and any record made DURING HER LIFETIME shows Irena or some variation thereof.

Dave
Irena Branson of Mariposa County, CA

I've been looking more studiously at the family of Irena Branson, daughter of Valentine Branson (youngest son of Jarred E. Branson). Some questions have arisen. Can anyone answer these:

1) Most genealogies have her as Irene. This does not appear to be correct. So far in every _original_ source I've found, she is shown as Irena or some variation thereof -- Rena, Arena, Erena among them. Are people just assuming it was actually Irene because Irena is not as common a name? The only way-back-when source I have found that has her as Irene is her obituary in the Mariposa Gazette.

2) Most genealogies, if they contain her birthdate, have it as occurring in January, 1823. Where did this come from? In the 1900 census, she states it was June, 1826. This is consistent with the 1870 census. In the 1850 census (Jasper County, MO as Arena Scott), she is shown as only TWENTY, meaning a birthdate of 1829 or 1830. No source I've found other than modern-day genealogies has it as early as 1823 -- with the exception of that darn Mariposa County obit. I am convinced the obit informant did not know what he or she was talking about.

3) All sources agree that Irena was married to William Wyatt Scott, the father of her many children. Yet she appears in the 1870 census as Erena Clark. Who was Mr. Clark, does anyone know? By 1870, he appears to no longer be a part of Irena's life. I imagine Irena had by then been widowed a second time, after a very brief remarriage. She would have had to marry Mr. Clark after 1864, when William Scott was killed by lightning on the way out West.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Dave Smeds

I found a reference to a Charles Cornwallis 1788-1859 in connection with Eli Branson 1734-1797. Charles was apparently his son with Elizabeth Jane Rankin in England, although at that time Eli was 'also' 'still' married to Keziah Huff in NJ -?- and had apparently gone to England after fighting as a Patriot (in the Battle of the Regulators in Alamance County in May of '77) and there fathered Anna 1786-1847 and Charles. The best I can find out, Eli and Levi were the sons of Thomas Branson Jr. I'm confused because I've got two bd's for him, 1703 & 1706, and marriages to Rebecca Borden and Elizabeth Norton,-?- 'tho Eli and Levi are consistently listed as his sons.... Thomas Branson Sr. 1670-1744 and his wife Elizabeth Day are listed as having been from England, his father having been William Branson 1645, grandfather Nathaniel Branson 1605. And that's all the further I got.
