Hi

I've just seen the message about Henry Lloyd Branston. Would he possibly be the child of John Thomas Branston, (b. 1870 in Bottesford, Leicestershire, England, d. 1940 in Ontario, Canada) and Eliza Annie Milnes (b. Ambergate, Derbyshire, England)?

If he is, I think he is the nephew of my great grandma Lucy Castledine Branston. She was born 27/12/1868 in Bottesford and was John Thomas Branston's big sister. Her daughter Alice Rowland was my grandma.

I have quite a lot of information on the Branstons.

Kate

Hello Larry

I've just recognised your John Thomas Branston (1870-1940) and I see Phil Stevens has, too. My great-grandma was Lucy Castledine Branston (27 Dec 1868 - 20 Mar 1941). She was born in Bottesford and died in Long Bennington, and she was John T. Branston's big sister.

Lucy married Samuel Rowland (c.Aug 1860-28 Jan 1941) from South Witham in Lincolnshire and had eight children:

Charlotte Elizabeth (12 Jul 1889-1971)
Ada (30 Oct 1890-1962)
Arthur Henry (5 Sept 1892- c.1953)
Eliza Annie (22 Apr 1894 - 11 Feb 1903)
Gertrude (13 Sept 1896- 1952)
Harold (24 Jan 1899 - 1970)
Lucy Casseldine (17 Jul 1904 - 1986)
Alice (22 May 1906 - 6 Jul 1996)

Alice Rowland was my grandma - she married to a Clarence Frank Briggs in 1926, then to William Everard Siggs (b. 17 Apr 1904, Boothby Pagnell, d.21 Oct 1964, Retford, Nottinghamshire). With William Everard, she had my mum.

Kate Hurst

Hi Rob great to hear from you. I can vaguely remember Albert visiting my grandmother in Stapleford. She was Sarah Anne 1 Jan 1882-4 Aug 1974. The others were Kate Ellen b.1884 and Jane Sophia b,1887 I visited S.Witham in Aug/Sept this year. I had made contact with a member of their historical society. He was a great help and copied some of the Parish Records onto a CD for me. From memory Albert's baptism is on it. I can send you a copy if you give me your address. I also have Simeon's army records. He appears to have been a bit of a drinker. Elizabeth was born in Preston Barracks Heysham and her father was James. Got that off the Marriage Cert. I also have one remaining aunt who will rember Albert. Her address is Mrs O Grinyer 19 Timbers Crt. Hailsham, East Sussex BN27 1BX I also contact her daughter Sally through email. mel.rhodes@tesco.net Elizabeth must have been a remarkable woman when you look back through the census returns for the period. She probably took in lodgers to help feed the children. The railway was being built to S. Witham at the time.
Merry Christmasd and a Happy New Year
Brian Rawding
8 Clare Crt
Devonport
Tasmania
Australia 7310
email brawding7@gmail.com

Thanks Brian. The info is of great use. My Grandfather ( Albert Edward Branston - born 1899 ) was the last of Elizabeth's children, and as we suspected Simeon could not have been the father as he died 8 years earlier !

We know of 4 of the 7 children ( Albert, William, Lucy and Amelia - my dad can even remember as a child visiting uncle William and Aunt Lucy ), and have also found a Kate E. Branston born 1882 who is likely to be another. Do you know anything about the other 2 ?

Also if you have any info on Elizabeth's side of the family I'd love to hear.

Many Thanks & Merry Christmas
Rob

Hi Rob
Sorry it has taken so long. Yes it indeed looks as though Joseph B and Simeon are brothers.I haven't been able to get any thing past their father Simeon who was a general dealer. I have recently returned from a trip to the UK which included a trip to South Witham where a member of the local historical society was a great hepl. (I live in Tasmania) Simeon was by all accounts a bit of a drunkard and before his marriage in 1881. He served in the army for over 20 years and saw service in India. He died of a stroke in 1891. No doubt helped on by his drinking. He fathered 4 children and his wife Elizabeth had 3 more after his death. Didn't marry again though. Hope this is of some help to you
Cheers Brian

Hi Brian

I'm trying to trace my great grandfather called Simeon Branston from South Witham, born in 1867. It sounds like the Simeon you refer to is probably a relation. I believe that my great grandfather's father was called Joseph Bentley Branston ( born about 1834, married to Anne, and lived in South Witham ) and that his father was also called Simeon ( born about 1814 ). Possibly the Simeon you refer to was the brother of Joseph Bentley ?

From the freeBMD index it sounds like the Simeon you refer to was born in 1839 ( birth registered Oct-Dec that year ) at Woolsthorpe Lincolnshire. He was an agricultural labourer who at the time of the 1881 census was lodging with a Nailer family.

I'd be interested to hear of any extra info you may have discovered.

Regards
Rob Branston

William BRANSTON - c.1801, Wooton, Northamptonshire

My great great great grandfather was William BRANSTON who was born c.1801 in Wooton, Northamptonshire. He was married to Mary CLARK and their daughter Christina BRANSTON (born c.1837 in Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire) was my great great grandmother.

Christina had at least four siblings: William, Thomas, Joseph and Mercy - some of whom appear to have been known as BRAUNSTON rather than BRANSTON. Christina married George PAYNE, probably in the Heyford area of Northamptonshire, c.1857.

Would love to hear from anyone who can tell me more about this family.

I have done some research into my family but there are some strays which I would like to find as well as possible links to Branston's in other parts of Ontario.
My family originated from John Sidney Branston whose son William was my great Grandfather. John was listed as a provisions dealer in the village of Delaware, Middlesex Co., Ontario in 1854. Any links?

Hello
i've asked my Dad, and he's told me most of what he knows, which, by his own admission, isnt very much. One of my other relatives is much more up to speed, and shes apparently writing to us at some point.
What my Dad told me:
My great grandad is Henry (always called Harry) Branston, born in leicestershire, near Melton Mowbray/ Branston in possibly the mid 1860s? He was a bootmaker by trade, and came to Birmingham in possibly the 1880s.
My grandad (he was also called Henry/known as Harry) was the eldest of his three children (as far as we know).
Rather lacking in detail, i'm afraid.
Steven
Hey Guys,

I just stumbled across this board completely by accident. My branch of Branstons live in England. We're all over the midlands now, but i seem to remember being told that my great grandad's family lived in Leicestershire (there are indeed at least two villages in there called Branston, and there is another one in Lincolnshire). I don't know if we are related, but it's interesting that there is some kind of Leicester connection, don't you think?

Steven.

My older brother Barry (bbranston@cadvision.com) is probably the knowledgeable one as far as the Branston family tree goes. He tells me that our John Thomas Branston had 8 children, with my grandfather being the fifth oldest. That's great information that you have provided....and the picture is fantastic. Apparently my Uncle John (branston@altavista.com) can provide you with some family tree information. As far as photos go....I'll check into it. Uncle John may have a few. If you get any more info, please post it here. I have given my brother the link to this web site. Lets all share the info....it's very interesting to discover our family history.

Thanks Phil!

My father is Don Branston from Dunnville, my grandfather is Henry Lloyd Branston born in England but raised and lived in Dunnville.
I checked with dad but his memory about his family is very poor. I have a cousin in Nanticoke who has been doing a tree for the last couple of years, am going to see how he has done and will get back to you with the info.
