I just got your message.
Yes, I do! I have done a lot of research since my 2000 posting and have learned that Gasper Bras y Urpina born cica 1820, Barcelona, Spain, died Aug 27, 1896 in Mayaguez, PR, was my great grandfather. Attached is a copy of Gaspar's death certificate. My grandfather was Juan Bras y Mendoza born Nov 23, 1880 in Mayaguez and died June 11, 1932 in New York City. I have continued working the family tree and have some information about ancestors in Spain and a fair amount concerning the Bras family in PR and the mainland U.S. I would love to compare notes. You may contact me directly at brasv@verizon.net or phone at 703-878-1962.

I just found this 2000 posting. I am also searching for information about how the Bras name came to Puerto Rico. I believe my great grandfather Gasper and grandfather Juan(circa 1884 - june 11, 1932) were from Mayaquez. Do you have any information you can share? Thanks, Victor Bras.

Hi LInda

This is terrific info on Harman Bras. I also found that his Father Hendrick Pietersz was born in 1615 in Gelderland Holland and arrived in the US about 1640.

If you give me your email I'll send you my snail mail address. I'm very interested in the article in the American Genalogist.

BTW, I'm trying to find my Huguenot ancestor Abraham Coriell/Coryell who was born in France in 1666, emigrated to HOlland, then England in 1685, and arrived in Piscataway NJ by about 1700. Probably married a Dutch woman - something like Annetje Van Court. I'm just stuck getting more information about him. Any ideas? I'm looking through ships's passenger lists trying to find his hame.

This info is terrrific - thank you very much
Jenny

Gloria, as you can see by my name, we now use another "s". I have a Pedigree which goes back to a Henderick Pieterson Brass who was born in 1615 in Gelderland, Holland. His wife was Geertje Everts. They came to New Amsterdam (NYC) sometime before 1640. I think they had a total of nine children (Pieter, Adam,Harmon,Wilhelm,Bruno,Walter, Rut, Evert Garrit). I have some of the descendent tracking on all these children, but have nothing on parents. If you're interested in any of these please let me know and we may be able to exchange some info. Have a nice day.

Jenny,
Sorry I don't have anything on Coriell or Van Court. There is a Huguenot webring, accessible through the Huguenot Historical Society (www.hhs-newpaltz.org/). One of their pages may have something useful. I vaguely remember seeing a list of "officially recognized" Huguenot emigrant ancestors somewhere. Your Abraham Coriell/Coryell may appear there. The U. S. GenWeb has pages for each state; you may be able to locate this family via this site. Try www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/ Hope this helps.

Hi Rollin- Would you know anything about the children of Harmanus Bras and his 2nd wife Geertruy Coeymans? I believe that they had a son, Lucas, who married a Lena Rycke somewhere in Bergen Co., NJ (possibly Hackensack). I have found baptism records for several of their children, but not my ancestor Elisabeth Bras. Circumstantial evidence points to her as their daughter: she named her 2nd son Lucas (Lucas Bras witnessed), and 2nd daughter Helena (for Lena?). I just can't locate the records to prove it. Elisabeth married Matheis van Keuren in Kingston, NY, 1777, and their children were baptized there. I would greatly appreciate any info whatsoever; Lucas is proving to be something of a brick wall!
