She has lots of info as well as the Charles Brashear books. I have 3 vols. Great info and pictures as well. I do have some pictures on my Brashear Family Tree. Contact me@ judithcochran@att.net Thanks.

Quay,
We communicated several years ago. I am connected to the Brasher's via Quay Sr's marriage to Margaret Irene Twist. Her sister Alice (Mary Alice) is my grandmother.

I found Margret's obituary in the Uniontown Morning Herald from 1951. It lists her husband as George Brashear. I thought she was married to Quay Sr. When did they divorce or did she marry George after Quay Sr. died?

Was there any family trouble with is situation to your knowledge?
Love to share information
Nancy

She was married to Dad Cross before that and I have 2 half sisters from them, JoAnn and Laura. I have pictures of some people I don't know who they are. Can you e-mail me at AAACGAINES@AOL.COM Thank-you, Alana

Vena Brashear d/o Rhodes Christopher "Chris" Brashear, passed on only a few years ago. I wish I had started doing the family research 5 years ago, I could have connected you. She was staying near your Aunt LaBelle in northern California. I don't know which of her many marriages was with your father. I will ask my sister-in-law. She knows/knew most of them. I do remember a mention of a husband named Cross. Again I am so very sorry I didn't know of you sooner. Any information I can provide, just let me know.
Marie

Our line is through Chris, then Jasper Vernon, his son Vernon Jack. LaBelle is in her 90's and still living. The two who attended the reunion were Phyllis June Prince Brashear, Jasper Vernon's wife (we called him Vernon) and Phyllis Jean Brashear Vieau....Vernon's daughter. Jean has diabetes and is almost blind. She asked me to research the Owens side of the family and then a year after my daughter died in an automobile accident my grand daughter asked me to pull together a family tree. Jean was a college friend and I married her oldest brother. We divorced in 1964. My in-laws wrote him off and kept me. Wonderful people. So glad to have made a connection again. No blood connection except through my daughter. Vena died only a couple of years ago. If you need the dates to anything I might have them in the family tree I am building. I thought I should get on it before everyone was gone. To clarify a couple of points: Chris' son Richard worked for the post office in Ontario, California. He married Cora ??? and raised two daughters and finally died there. C. F. (initials only but forced in the military to put names Charles Frances to the initials) never married. He lived with Vernon and June until his death in Joshua Tree. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Riverside, California. LaBelle lives in Marysville as do two of her children Jerry Pierson and Darlene (don't have that last name yet.) I only started doing this in the last six weeks or so. I do have pictures of Chris, Richard Rhodes, and some of the others. Let me know if you need copies. I will be off line for the next few days driving to the Nevada Opal Mines. If you answer just know it will be a few days before I can get back to you.
Sorry this is so long.
Marie

Marie,

Which of Chris' children is your line coming from? It seems "Belle" from California was scheduled to come to a Gallaway reunion around 1990 held in Coleman, TX but was unable to do so because she was ill. I think her daughter came instead but I don't know her name.....Do you know anything about this? I know we took pictures. However, I thought Belle was 90 something at the time so surely she is no longer living. My older aunt at the time was Bessie Garland Gallaway Kimmell and she knew Belle.

Thanks.

Peggy

I have seen where a Charles Joseph (Farmer) Owens born 1842 in Pensacola, FL married a Mary Brashear. I am looking for information on the parents of Barbara Ann Josephine Owens born in 1850 in Pensacola, FL who married a Rhodes Richard Brashear. This looks as though it could be Owens siblings marrying Brashear siblings. Can anyone confirm this or tell me if Charles and Josephine were brother and sister? It also looks like a John Wesley Owens was born in 1817 in either SC/GA/FL - is this the father? Any info appreciated.

In our family gggrandpa has always been known as Richard Rhodes Brashear. He married gggrandma Barbara Josephine Owens Brashear. Our line is through their son Chris who married gggrandma's brother's daughter Lavenia Owens. (First cousins who married.) Chris and Lavenia's children were Alonzo, Charley, Richard, C.F. (initials only), and Jasper Vernon -- the boys. The girls were/are Rosa, Vena both deceased and LaBelle still living in Marysville, California. The boys Alonza and Charley both deceased before I met the others. One was shot for messing around with another man's wife and the other from an illness. I never learned which. Wasn't into pulling together information for my grandaughter and almost blind sister-in-law who has pictures of family and at least one of RR.
Marie

Elizabeth Tennison and Orlando Ficklin Brashear had six children:

Nora B. b. 1874 ????
Tilden b.30 Aug 1876- d. 25 Apr 1941
Orlando Ficklin Jr. b. 23 Feb 1878- d. 4 May 1952
Laura Alice b. 2 Aug 1879- d. 5 Dec 1946
Sam (Roy?) b. abt 1881 ?????
John b. abt 1883

Our mysterious Sam could be your Sam. Ficklin was often called "Fick" which could have been translated by a younger generation as "Vick." These children were born in Clay County and Richland County, Illinois.
Elizabeth was married four times as her successive husbands died. She had two more children by her next husband. She moved from Crawford to Clay to Richland Cos., Illinois.

This Orlando Ficklin Brashear's ancestors homesteaded in Crawford County, Illinois about 1810.
I have gathered quite a bit of info about Orlando and Elizabeth's children ... and about others in this Brashear family, too. I also have info on the Tennison family.

Alice who married James Cutler left Illinois, and she and her husband homesteaded in Oklahoma on land which was once Indian Territory. After finding oil her family moved to California.

Tilden, Orlando and John and their families stayed in the general eastern Illinois/ Indiana area.

I can't find Nora who married Daniel Leghan and had five children. (I know this from captions on photos.) I can only find her in 1910 in Richland County then she is gone.

And ... I haven't been able to find "Sam." He supposedly "went west" to Texas or Oklahoma. By the way, there are others in the larger Brashear family named "Guy."

Write to me at pasbilt@aol.com if you think this is your Sam.

I have lots of info on many Brashears from central and eastern Illinois. I do a lot of lateral research. I know other Brashear researchers, too. I have worked on this family off and on since about 1990.

Pat Buelt

I believe that Orlando and Elizabeth were also the parents to Samuel Guy Brashear but I am having a terrible time finding any information. Samuel Guy's death certificate list that his father was Victor but I'm wondering if that was a nick name and his mother is listed as Elizabeth Tennyson.

Thank you for your most informative reply. In the two or so years since posting my message I have made progress identifying the parents of Phoebe Brashear. I have no documented evidence but I do believe her parents may have been Phillip Brashear (son of Robert Samuel Brashear) and Elizabeth. Circumstantial evidence places Nathaniel and Phillip in close proximity and there is interaction between them. Robert Samuel Brashear names the 'heirs of my son Phillip' in his will. I know it is a thin straw but Phillips seems to be the 'last man standing'. Actually, 12 Corner Church was in Jackson County TN, near the border of Putnam. Nathaniel had a total of 7 land grants there dated between 1819 and 1829. I found a source to order the Spring Creek Baptist Church Minute Book and will do so. Haven't looked into the Mason family info you so graciously provided.
Clarice Gaddy Marker

Re: Phoebe Brashear & Nathaniel Mason

Although the content of your letter is correct as far as the date of Nathaniel Mason's marriage to Phoebe Brashear according to the Early History of Roane County Tennessee by Snyder Roberts, it is evident that you didn't read or even look at the Family Bible of John B. Rice who claims that he was born "Prior" to the year 1800 to his Father Stephen Rice and mother Phoebe Brashear. There is something else you are failing to realize here; The Will of Robert Samuel Brashear who passed in 1816 and wrote Phoebe, his daughter into his will in 1815 nameing her as Phoebe Rice. Why didn't he write her into this Will as Phoebe Mason if Stephen Rice's son indicates that he was born Prior to 1800? The strength of this proven document speaks volumes for itself as most Nathaniel Mason researchers can attest if they utilize the Roane County Story. However once you see and read the Will and the Bible of Stephen Rice's son John B. Rice in Shelby County, Tennessee the Roane County story Snyder Roberts (as great a historian as he was) just doesn't add up. There were definatly 2 ladies who carried the name "Phoebe (Phebe) Brashear. Nathaniel Mason married one of these two in 1801 and Stephen Rice married the daughter of Robert Samuel Brashear even earlier that the Roane County History reveals.

If you take the time to look in Putnam County Tennessee around 1825-1829, you will discover that Nathaniel Mason and his family lived there. Nathaniel had rented a 7 acre farm there that was the Original 219 acre Land Grant of a man named William Christmas. This Grant was surveyed 1 Dec 1814. Nathaniel did eventually purchase this 7 acres of the Land Grant and is filed with the State of Tennessee under Grant Number 13084. It is refered to as Mason's Spring or Mason's Field on which is located a small cemetery that has currently (2009) been cleared by a man name Earl Jequess who is currently (2009) the chairman of the Genealogical Society of Putnam County, Tennessee.

Also in Putnam County Tennessee history is the oldest Baptist Church (organized in 1802) in the early history of this area of which Nathaniel Mason was a member. In the "Official Minutes" of the Spring Creek Baptist Church You will find the notes of a church meeting dated 4 April 1829 which states, "Brother Nathaniel Mason was dismissed by Letter this day." The dismissal Letter occured when people were leaving the area or moving someplace else. Then in 1830 you find Nathaniel Mason and Family in Shelby County on the 1830 Census.

Also in Shelby County in 1830 was living a man and his family by the name of John B. Rice who did leave a Will and a Bible indicating that he was the son of Stephen Rice and Phoebe Brashear of Roane County, Tennessee. John B. Rice claims that his birth year was prior to 1801 which was the Marraige year of Nathaniel and his Phebe Brashear. The conclusion of all of this documented evidence that we (or anyone else researching the history of Nathaniel Mason of Roane County Tennessee) can come to is that there were 2 ladies who carried the name of Pheobe (Phebe) Brashear. Of Course Robert Samuel Brashear indicates that his own Daughter in 1815 was Phoebe Rice and not Phoebe Mason as should have been the case if Nathaniel married his daughter Phoebe in 1801 after the birth of John B. Rice. There isn't any mention at all in Robert Samuel Brashear's Will about anyone named Nathaniel Mason; only Daniel Mason who married Mary "Polly" Brashear. Daniel Mason even made a few purchases at Robert Samuel's estate Sale which is fully documented but, No Nathaniel Mason.
People and researchers and historians who are looking into the life of Nathaniel Mason really need to take into consideration the family Bible of John B. Rice of Shelby County, Tennessee.

Also look at the original "Rice" land Grant for the city of Memphis, Tennessee. It was Andrew Jackson and three other "Investors" who purchased the original Land Grant of of the Rice's from Stephen's brother Elisha. It was called the Jackson Purchase as he also had to secure the rights of this land from the Native American's who also had claim to this land.

It is here in Shelby County where you will find Rice Chapel the burial place of John B. Rice incidently whose wife was Sarah Brashear. She is here in Shelby County as well.

We haven't been able to establish the burial place of Nathaniel Mason and his wife Phebe Brashear (I spell Nathaniel's wife's name "Phebe" so I can keep the two Brashear Phoebe's seperate). It is believed however that he, in his older years, moved back to Putnam County and was buried in the small Cemetery that lay at the foot of his 7 acre farm on Mason's Springs. It is also speculated that he may have even gone to the Arkansas Territory (just across the Mississippi from Memphis) like some of his children did, died there and might be buried there as well. We really expected to find Nathaniel near Rice Chapel as he had served in the military in 1802 with Philip Rice and Daniel Mason and knew the Rice's well in the early history of Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee in 1802. They were all part of Capt. John Walker's Company. Yes, Stephen Rice too knew Nathaniel Mason and Daniel Mason who at most are probably cousins to each other and not Brothers as suspected by Snyder Roberts in the early years of research when computerized research hadn't evolved yet.

So Far, at least in our own research, it appears that Daniel Mason was descended from a man named Daniel Mason who was a son of Capt. John Mason of Pasquotank County, Virginia. This elder Daniel Mason (Sr.)b. 1727 in Surry County Virginia d. 1798 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia was a full brother to The Soldier and Statesman, Colonel David Mason of Sussex County Virginia. This is the same Daniel Mason (Sr) who was the husband of (mar. 1748 in Dinwiddie County Virgina) Mary Winfield b. 1724 Surry County Virginia d. 1774 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Our primary evidence of this statement is the Mason Family Cemetery in Louden County Tennessee which was part of the estate of Thomas Jefferson Mason, the son of Daniel Mason (Jr.). Daniel Mason and Nathaniel Mason did know who each other were as cousin's tend to know their families well but as far as being brothers to each other; that is highly unlikely and niether of these two were descended from George Mason of Gunston Hall. The closest any one of them may get to the Mason's of Gunston Hall is to George Mason's Brother William who established his own Mason Family seat in the early settlement of Norfolk Virginia which by the way is just across the entrance to the Chesapeak Bay from Pasquotank County Virginia where we find the Mason Family seat of Sir John Mason and his son Capt. John Mason who was the father of Daniel Mason (Sr.).

If you are at all a Mason Family Historian and researcher, it is worth your while to discover the distribution and "Locations" of the Mason Families, Family seats. As many of us know that by the time of the American Revolution in the 1770's, the Mason Family was already so very large and distributed well from their 5 different family seats of descendancy in America from Maine to South Carolina. Once you have a grasp of these different Mason Family seats of descendancy, you will be able to determine much better when and where a Mason Descendant hales from. We figure Nathaniel Mason either came from Maryland or was descended from William Mason of Norfolk, Virginia; "a Cousin" (NOT Brother) to Daniel Mason who we think descended from Daniel Mason (Sr.) and Mary Winfield, both originally from Surry County, Virginia in the early 1700's.

So check out what I have written here today and see if you also come to the same conclusion that Nathaniel Mason married a second lady who was also named Phebe Brashear in Roane County in 1801.

Although the content of your letter is correct as far as the date of Nathaniel Mason's marriage to Phoebe Brashear according to the Early History of Roane County Tennessee by Snyder Roberts, it is evident that you didn't read of even look at the Family Bible of John B. Rice who claims that he was born "Prior" to the year 1800 to his Father Stephen Rice and mother Phoebe Brashear. There is something else you are failing to realize here; The Will of Robert Samuel Brashear who passed in 1816 and wrote Phoebe, his daughter into his will in 1815 nameing here as Phoebe Rice. Why didn't he write her into this Will as Phoebe Mason? It is refered to as Mason's Spring or Mason's Field on which is located a small cemetery that has currently (2009)being cleared by a man name Earl Jequess who is currently (2009) the chairman of the Genealogical Society of Putnam County, Tennessee.

Also in Putnam County Tennessee history is the oldest Baptist Church (organized in 1802) in the early history of this area of which Nathaniel Mason was a member. In the "Official Minutes" of the Spring Creek Baptist Church You will find the notes of the meeting dated 4 April 1829 which states, "Brother Nathaniel Mason was dismissed by Letter this day." The dismissal Letter occured when people were leaving the area or moving someplace else. Then in 1830 you find Nathaniel Mason and Family in Shelby County on the 1830 Census. Also in Shelby County in 1830 was living a man and his family by the name of John B. Rice who did leave a Will and a Bible indicating that he was the son of Stephen Rice and Pheobe Brashear of Roane County, Tennessee. Of Course Robert Samuel Brashear indicates that his own Daughter in 1815 was Phoebe Rice and not Phoebe Mason as should have been the case if Nathaniel married his daughter Phoebe in 1801.
It was Andrew Jackson and three other "Investors" who purchased the original Land Grant of of Stephen Rice from Stephen's brother Elisha.

We haven't been able to establish the burial place of Nathaniel Mason and his wife Phebe Brashear. We really expected to find him near Rice Chapel as he had served in the military in 1802 with Philip Rice and Daniel Mason in the early history of Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee in 1802 as part of Capt. John Walker's Company. Yes, Stephen Rice knew Nathaniel Mason and Daniel Mason who at most are probably cousins to each other and not Brothers as suspected by Snyder Roberts in the early years of research when computerized research hadn't evolved yet.

So Far, at least in our own research, it appears that Daniel Mason was descended from a man named Daniel Mason who was a son of Capt. John Mason of Pasquotank County, Virginia. This elder Daniel Mason (Sr.)b. 1727 in Surry County Virginia d. 1798 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia was a full brother to The Soldier and Statesman, Colonel David Mason of Sussex Coutny Virginia. The closest they may get to the Mason's of Gunston Hall is to George Mason's Brother William who established his Mason Family seat in the early settlement of Norfolk Virginia which by the way is just across the entrance to the Chesapeak Bay from Pasquotank County Virginia where we find the Mason Family seat of Sir John Mason and his son Capt.

Dear Nora, thank you for responding. Within the past few months I have come to the conclusion there were TWO women named Phoebe Brashear: 1. daughter of Robert Samuel Brashear & Phoebe Nicks b 1769, m Stephen Rice 2. daughter of Phillip Brashear (s/o Robert Samuel Brashear & Phoebe Nicks), b abt 1780 d aft 1830, married Nathaniel Mason 9 July 1801. There was too much 'tooing & froing' for there to be only one Phoebe. Phoebe #2 is married to Nathaniel and having babies during the time Phoebe #1 and Stephen were involved with the settlement of the Nicks estate. Phillip Brashear and Nathaniel Mason were closely interacting for some years after Phoebe #2 and Nathaniel were married, to the extent of going into debt together (or Phillip could have pledged security for Nathaniel's debt) and were found living close to one another in several county census. I may be the first Mason researcher to come to this conclusion. I would like to hear from others about this conclusion of mine.

To both Tion and Nikki,
To the best of my knowledge, Robert Harrison Brashear who was married to Josephine Prudence Knight in St. Clair Co., MO (and who lived for years and died in Howell Co., MO)was borned in MO, probably Howard Co., MO. He is shown there in the 1850 Census I believe. I am not where I can get to my notes until I get back in town but I do descend from this line.

Would love to talk to both of you. So sorry, I missed Nikki's message so long ago. I am a grandaughter of Cecil Loyd Brashear. I am some of your distant relatives.

Tion, our ancestor Josephine P. Knight was from IL, and I honestly think that this Brashear family had other connections there but have found nothing to prove that yet. Our Robert & Josephine married in St. Clair Co., MO and I think just started traveling after that. Their son Edward's obit from Tulsa, OK in 1960, listed his birthplace as St. Joseph, MO which I still have not been able to document but have not been online searching for births in a very long time. There may be a whole lot more records posted by now.

Would love to hear from both of you!
Beth Peck Cooper

Beth, I just found these messages on the Brashear family and since I was doing some research for my boyfriends family, I wanted to ask if you know who Waymack and Margaret Brashear's parents were? Is it Judson or is this Waymack, a son of the other Waymack? My BF descends from Waymack, Thornton Peter, Albert Jasper, Albert Henry and down to him. And now he even has children, grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild to add to the long list. However, I got lost on Waymacks parents. Can you help me? I was thinking about buying Charles Brashear Volume 8, but don't know if I should buy another book to go with that to go back further, but wouldn't know just which one to go back with. I can't afford all of those volumes.
Thanking you in advance,
P.S.Since these posts are back in 2000, I hope that this finds someone who can answer my questions....
~~Joan~~

robert samuel brashear/s, born in brashear meadow, prince george's co, md, is currently believed to be the first white settler in what would become roane county, tennessee [source: snyder e roberts, roots of roane county, tennessee 1792-, 1981]. he is buried with many early members of his family behind a house built by the edwards family where his had been in sugar grove valley. he is my fifth great-grandfather.

i recently posted a 61-page photo album of the brashear or brashears family cemetery. the photos were taken on trips home between sep 2003 and aug 2004. the following link goes to my introductory page and contains a direct link to the album:

http://tntype.kiddoink.com/cemeteries/brashear/brashear_fami...

this next link is from my roane county genealogy blog and goes to an index of the photos. that entry contains direct links to most of the specific photos in the album above.
I am looking for some information on Charles W. Brashear. He was born on March 9, 1913 in Oklahoma. He died on April 10, 1972 in Humboldt, CA. I would like to find some information on his mother, Myrtle, sister, Veda?, and father, James A. Brashear. Veda is my Grandmother on my dad's side and I never got to meet her. She was born in either 1918 or 1919 in Oklahoma. She died sometime around 1987 or 88 in California. She remarried after my dad's father, so I don't know her last name at the time of her death. I THINK my dad's father's name is Walter Kendall. The only records I can find on any of them is in the 1930 Census of Manteca California. If you can help me out with any aspects it will be greatly appreciated.

Seeking info on marriage to Joel "Jack" Brashears, children listed as Avis Faye in 1902 and Roy and Ray in 1907. She is my ggrandmother and was married to Jim Usery, whose son Willie T. is my grandfather. They also have a son Walter, born in 1908, which is confusing me with the marriage to "Jack" with children born in 1907. The numbers don't add up for me. Clarification anyone?

Carl Brashear U.S. Navy Master Diver

On the Web:
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 772-08
September 15, 2008
Navy to Christen USNS Carl Brashear

The Navy will launch and christen dry cargo/ammunition ship the USNS Carl Brashear at a 10 a.m. PDT ceremony on Sept. 18, 2008. The christening ceremony for the newest ship in the Lewis and Clark (T-AKE) class of underway replenishment ships will be held at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, Calif.

Designated as T-AKE 7, the new ship honors Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate (Master Diver) Carl M. Brashear (1931-2006), who joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. He was a pioneer in the Navy as one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the Navy Diving School and was designated a Navy salvage diver. He was the first African-American to qualify and serve as a master diver while on active duty and the first U.S. Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee, the result of a leg injury he sustained during a salvage operation. After 31 years of service, Brashear officially retired from the U.S. Navy on April 1, 1979. Brashear was the subject of the 2000 movie "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding Jr.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead will speak at the christening ceremony and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Joe R. Campa Jr. will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. Serving as ship’s sponsor, Lauren Brashear will christen the ship in honor of her grandfather. The launching ceremony will include the time-honored Navy tradition when the sponsor breaks a bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen the ship “USNS Carl Brashear.”

USNS Carl Brashear is the seventh ship of the Navy’s T-AKE 1 class. The T-AKE program calls for up to 14 ships, the first 11 of which will serve as combat logistics force ships and the last three of which are expected to be part of the Maritime Prepositioning Force (Future). As a combat logistics force ship, USNS Carl Brashear will directly contribute to the ability of the Navy to maintain a worldwide forward presence by delivering ammunition, food, fuel, and other dry cargo to U.S. and allied ships at sea. The ship is designed to operate independently for extended periods at sea and can carry and support two helicopters to conduct vertical replenishment.

As part of Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force, the USNS Carl Brashear is designated as a United States Naval Ship (USNS) and will be crewed by 124 civil service mariners working for MSC. The ship will also have a military detachment of 11 U.S. Navy Sailors to provide supply coordination and, when needed, can carry a helicopter detachment of up to 36.

Additional information about this class of ship is available on line at http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4400&t....

Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Brashear
