Bratt family Staffordshire England

Hi, I'm trying to find the parents and the marriage of my great, great, great, great grandfather Walter Bratt (b around 1796 Bilston, Staffordshire). I can see from the census he is married to Margaret and must have been married around 1818 as their first child Sarah was born around that date in Wolverhampton. Margaret is from Halesowen, Worcestershire born around 1795.
I can't seem to find either on the IGI index and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Sarah
Hello Maertha

William Asher Bratt was the brother of Daniel A Bratt. Daniel was married to Sarah Graham, who was the youngest daughter of my GGgrandfather, David Graham.

In my efforts to find more info on Sarah, I gathered quite a bit of info on William, including a pretty extensive piece out of 1891 Portrait and Biographical Album of Fayette County, Pages 230-231 and also his obituary.

Do you have these? If not, I would be happy to print the info off and send it to you, since they are too long to put on the message board.

Basics: William Asher Bratt
Born: 2 Mar 1841 in Hoosick, Renssalear Co, New York
Parents: Daniel C Bratt and Sarah Armstrong
Died: 22 Jan 1900 Center twp, Fayette, Iowa
Burial: Dunham Grove, Lot 126

I don't have the girls spouses other than Libby's. I also have a C.R. listed as a child in the Biographical information.

Let me know if you need the Bio and Obit. My laser printer is out of ink right now but will replace it hopefully tomorrow when I can get into town. My email is: wldwd6@hughes.net

If you ever come across any info on his brother Daniel A Bratt and wife, Sarah Graham, please let me know

Delia in Spokane

Was wondering if you have found out anything on your Bratts. I am trying to track down a William Asher Bratt b. 1841 NY, married Electa Proctor about 1868. She was born 1845 in OH. They lived in Center, Fayette, IA. They had 4 children - Labinas, married Lewis Sprague, Arthur married Jennie, Susan & Lucy. Looking for DOD and burial - maybe who the girls married. Was wondering the connection between these folks and your Bratts.

Re: jacob bradt

I believe Jacobs father died in NY, not sure yet. There was a large migration after the end of the revolutionary war, and a greater migration into Mi,OH,IN when the Erie Canal opened in 1825. Not only the Bradt family but many others including my own moved in Mich and western NY. I did find other Bradt families in MI,IN,OH in the 1820-1840 timeframe. Many of these states including Ohio were bounty lands set aside by the continental congress to reward revolutionary war militas for service, and to expand the newly formed county. In many cases it was the children of these Revolutionary war veteraans that claimed the bounty lands in these states to start a new life for the next generation. In most cases the migration did not take place overnight. Jacobs family moved from peresent day Rensselaer county across the Hudson to Wells twp in Hamilton co. Just north of albany. Ten years later he had moved on to Onandaga co,then the next USC finds him in St. Joseph co IN. Somewhere along the way in Ohio daughter Amanda was born (Based on USC records) it also now appears several other as yet unidentifed children were born into the family along the way. This migration also included people from other states including New England and was not limited to people from NY.
The Holland land company seemed to have started the acceleration when they offered lands in Western NY at reasonable prices to encourage settlement and of course make money. Together with the Bounty lands rights and ease of travel with the impending completion of the Eire canal all fueled the migration frenzy.
A quick look at US Censuses from about 1820-1850 shows many common NY family names appearing in the mid western states.
Wayne

Jacob BRADT,Charity L. Francisco and NY Weatherwax/Overacker connections

This evening I was browsing through my copies of Rensselaer co Church books. I decided to see if I could come up with Jacobs baptismal record. I found that Nicholas Bradt/Brath/Brott/Bratt and wife Anna Barbara Overacker had the following children
1. Barent Bradt, bapt 23 Jan 1774,Schaghticoke Ref. Chbk record no dob
2. Jacob BRADT,b:26 May 1792,bap: 4 Jan 1794 Schaghticoke Ref. Chbk
The following baptisms are of real interest all were at Gilead Lutheran Church,Brunswick,Rens. NY
3. Eva Bratt ,b:15 Apr 1781,bap: 20 May 1781
4.Anna Barbara Bratt b: 22 Oct 1783, bap: 1 Feb 1784
sponsors: Michael Overacker sr& Anna Barbara wife
(NOTE) same day Peter Weatherwax,Catharina Cipperly have their daughter Regina baptised
5.Catharina Bratt ,b:21 Jun 1790;Bap: 14 Nov 1790
(NOTE) same day Andreas Weatherwax and wife Eleanor Overacker have their daughter Rachel baptized. Sponsors for that were Jacob Overacker and wife Rachel Yates

So we now know for sure who some of the children of Nicholas Bradt and Anna Barbara Overacker were. And we also know now that the Weatherwax/ Bradt/Overacker families all knew each other and were living in the same communities in NY
AS a side note Jacob Bradt b: 1792, there were also 3- Jacob Weatherwax's born in Rensselaer co in 1792 as well.

Jacob BRADT would eventually marry Charity L. Francisco, they had three children. One of them was Amanda Bradt b:1832 in Ohio, She in turn would marry Clement S. Weatherwax and have four Weatherwax children. After Clements death she married Augustus Chapel
The Bradt family would settle just across the border from Michigan in Indiana. Jacob died there some time before USC1850 where wife Charity is found living in Center twp. St. Joseph co IN.

Amanda Bratt/Brott b:1832 Ohio

In USC1850 Center twp,Summit co Indiana is the BRATT family consisting of:
Charity BRATT 54-f-bNY
John " " 26-m-bNY
Amanda " " 18-f-bOH
Henry " " 13-m-bIN
Francis BRATT 11-m-bIN
I have no idea of who Charity's husband was, my concern is Amanda BRATT or BROTT b:1832 in Ohio.
Andrew Weatherwax (1817-1867) married 1st a Mary Ferguson who died 12 Dec 1858 in Michigan. Andrew then married a
Amanda BROTT c1859 they had three children prior to Andrew's death
son: Clement Weatherwax
son: Frank Weatherwax
dau: Kate Weatherwax
All children born in Newburg,Cass co. MI.
When son Clement married for the 2nd time his marriage record clearly identifies his mother as Amanda BROTT.
USC for the year 1860 Newburg, wife Amanda clearly indicates she was born in Ohio 1832 which matches the Indiana census record above. USC1870 again for Newburg the widowed Amanda Weatherwax indicates proper age,but now indicates being born in Indiana. This leads me to believe that the Indiana census of 1850 identifies the proper Amanda Bratt or Brott who married Andrew Weatherwax in Michigan.
Amanda last appears in USC 1880 in Quincy,Branch co MI where she widowed working as a housekeeper. No death burial record yet found.
I would like to establish her father if possible. Both her mother and older brother John indicate they were born in NY, possibly this line came from the Schenectady NY area where many BRADT,BRATT,BROTT lines eminated.

Eliza Bratt, daughter of James Bratt (b. 1812), was my greatgrandmother. She married Thomas Hallwood in 1871 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1884. This James Bratt had 2 other daughters that I know of - Sarah and Susan. I don't know if he had any sons. I'm afraid I know nothing else about the other descendents of that James Bratt, but they did live in the Runcorn area at the time of Eliza'a marriage.
BRATT's from England

I have my Bratt traced back from Colonial states to when they immigrated here from England. Thomas (b. abt. 1807) came over with wife Ann (b. abt. 1813) and landed in PA. From there they had 7 children (lucy, sarah, maria, elizabeth, thomas, james, and william) in Maryland, Pennsylvaia, and Delaware. From the time of the birth of their last child, they remained in Maryland. The line never left Maryland, until my father (James Edward Bratt III left to Florida).

Anyone have any history of the Bratt family in England? Prior to their move over the the States? Did any other direct family come here right before or after them?

Sandy (Bratt) Krischke
krischkefam@bellsouth.net
Hey Cathy, Anne's ancestors left Norway for Holland circa 1500 and settled in Fort Orange, now Albany NY, about a century later. They were actually Bradts, not Bratts and took that spelling after the British took over New Holland. The Mesnards changed the pronunciation of their name to appear English. It was normal for the French and Dutch to appear as English as possible to avoid discrimination. The term Yankee was coined during the colonial period of the US as a derogatory name for the Dutch, meaning 'little cheese'.

It is most unlikely any of our Bradts went to England but certanly not impossible.

Bratt grocers of Manchester England

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of any sources of info or photos of a family of grocers in the Manchester area during the mid 19th C please?

In particular there was a company called Bratt and Hobson Ltd who were wholesale grocers and grocery, cheese, ham, bacon and tea dealers. It also seems this company was an agent for WA Gilbey Ltd wine and spirit merchants. The Bratt and Hobson company would seem to be at least part owned by Peter Bratt of Bowden and had shops/stores at over a dozen addresses including Manchester Road, Swan Street, Broad Street, Chester Road, Oldham Street, Pinmill Brow, Regent Road, Stockport Road, Wilmslow Road, Great Ancoats Street, Market Street, Victoria Street, Stretford Road and Chapel Street.

However there is also evidence of another firm which was probably related - Bratt and Dobb who were also tea dealers and grocers at 89 Chorlton Road with a Thomas Bratt one of the partners.

It did seem that the Bratts were well-established as shopkeepers as there's further evidence of a greengrocer called William Bratt at 30 Greek Street, Amy Bratt a shopkeeper at 19 Silas Street, Albert Bratt a grocer at 88 Bolton Road, James Bratt a grocer at 74 Water Street and Daniel Bratt a shopkeeper in Butler Street.

Can anyone shed any light on this family of traders which certainly seems to have disappeared from today's shopping streets? Also any ideas on whether all these Bratts were related and who their parents were would be greatly appreciated.

Ian
Possibly already a relation when they married?

Also child number 10 of Laura and Edward (Sabra) married James Walker BARNES, they had Belle BARNES, who married VAN DUSEN and their daughter Ethel VAN DUSEN married Anthony BRATT. They had Dorothy who married Glenn A. WILSON.

Many of my (later) Bratts can be found buried in Lakeview Cemetery, in Chautauqua County, Jamestwon, New York.

(Thanks to Ann O. for the information leading to my great great grandmother Ivy BRATT WATSON!)

Do you have the program? I can send the file to you, and you can merge what I have if you'd like.

Annie Coleman was married to Dan Bratt. Trying to find out what might have happened to him...died in war maybe?? No luck int hat yet. He is on the 1900 census with Annie & James (age 1), but then in 1910, Annie is remarried and James is 10....no Dan. But I cannot find any death info or marriage info to get Annie's maiden name either!!!

Any help you might have would be great!

I hear stories growing up of Stella, and that she was nearly 100% blind before her death, adn was still working at a canning factory in MD picking crabs. No pictures of her--but I do have others you might be intersted in that my dad has.

Sandy

Yes Debbie--that is my GGrandfather. His oldest son, James E. Bratt, JR. is my grandfather on my dad's side. From what my dad tells (he heard from his mother) is that (depression and alcoholism run in that family, as well as emotional/physical abuse by the Bratt men). me--he was institutionalized at one time, adn no one ever spoke of him again. I guess back then, it was a shameful thing, and kids were allowed to think of their father os being dead, as it was better than knowing he was "committed". I understand that he got out of the institution, but never returned to his family, and was never spoke of---very strange!

Anyhow--his father is DAn Bratt, born 1877. YOu can find him on the 1880 census as dan bratt, with his parents....I have them all the way back to when Thomas Bratt came over from england...now trying ot trace the England line, but know luck. I have found the passenger list, butnothing to go on really. I can send you what i have if you would like.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the photo of Annie Coleman? Annie is my great grandmother. I only met her once. I have one photo of Stella Kendall if you would like a copy. Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of Stella's husband, James. I remember him quite fondly. I remember Stella but I was very young when she died. They were my godparents as well as my grandparents.

I have one photo of Stella Kendall if you would like a copy. I believe most of the photos of the grandparents
and greatparents went to one or two relatives. I mailed a package of information to you at the address
you gave me and it was returned. I also have copies
of marriage license entry for James and Stella which
was signed by Annie Coleman if you'd like a copy of
that as well.

Dear Sandy: We are researching the same family. I think I may have spoke with your mom at one time. She gave me an address where to send information to her and it was returned. Your great grandfather was not institutionalized. He died at Harbor Hospital in South Baltimore on July 16, 1970. I have his death
certificate if you'd like a copy as well as Stella's death certificate. I have also acquired a copy of their wedding license as well as the application signed by
Annie Coleman. I also have a copy of the marriage license of Florence Dadds and Charles Kendall who were Stella's parents. I have only one photo of Stella that I would be more than happy to make a copy of it for you. Unfortunately, not many in the family are willing to share photos. Hope to hear from you. P.S. your dad is my first cousin.
Do you have a James E. Bratt or James Bratt in your family
tree born May 18, 1899, died July, 1970? He married Stella
Kendall. Can't find his father in records anywhere. His
father died when he was very young and no one seems to
know anything about him, including his name.

Hi there...This is going back pretty far, but I think we may have a link, as I have E. James Bratt, James Edward Bratt, and James E. Bratt's all the way back in my line from my dad (James E. Bratt III), to when I am back to when Thomas Bratt came over from England, and I have reason to believe his dad was a James Bratt---so if I find something, I'll reply again. You can reach me via e-mail at krischkefam@bellsouth.net anytime. Maybe we can see if we link. I am only back to Bratt coming from England.
