My gg father was Hermann Richard Braunschweig, who was probably born in the late 1860s/early 1870s. I have many family photographs and knew my grandfather until his death in 1992, at the age of 97. He was the youngest of 5 children. I also knew my great aunt Martha, who died in the early 80s. The family was from Gera, which is outside of Liepzieg, formerly East Germany. The family immigrated from Germany in 1912, when my grandpa was 17 (he was born in 1895). Are you Jewish? Although they were all protestant Christians, they believe that my great grandfather may have been Jewish, but not necessarily raised as one. He looks very Jewish and was just under 5 ft. tall. When they moved to America, first to Philadelphia, then to San Francisco, my grandpa told us that Jewish immigrants would approach him constantly, thinking he was Jewish. They anglisized their name to Brunswick when they became citizens. I also remember stories my grandfather would tell of his dad's father, whom he never met. He was an alcoholic and would beat the kids. As the story went, his horses knew where to stop (right in front of his favorite bar).

Hi Sue,

I am hoping with your information I can finally link the two Wergin families together. My Wegin family was also from the island of Wollin, my data shows they were from the village of Warnow (which is close to Jarmbow). My Wergin family emigrated in 1843 and settled in Milwaukee - there is also a possibility that they lived in the Lebanon area, Dodge County for some time prior to 1850.

Thanks for the help.

I will respond in greater detail within the next few day. My family history book must be at my mom's house. Anna Wergin was from Jarmbow, Wollin Island, Pommern. She married Ludwig Braunschweig and immigrated to Lebanon, Dodge County. I think that I have names of her parents in my book. From memory she arrived in US on ship Pracosia in 1846. From memory her birthdate was 1810. I will get you the details soon. I visited the village of Jarmbow and traveled on Wollin Island several years ago. I am pretty sure that I gave copies of the photos of the village to the Pommersche Verein Freistadt.

Hi Sue,

I have a family of my ancestors from Pommern that I am trying to track down. I have a Carl Friedrich Wilhelm WERGIN who married Auguste Wilhelmine MAGRITZ at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee in 1851. They had at least seven children that I have been able to identify so far. There are two daughters I have been able to track in the 1880 census but then I assume they married as I cannot find them in the 1900 census. The two daughters are:

Adelheid WERGIN - b. 06 Jun 1859 in Milwaukee
and
Anna WERGIN - b. 27 Apr. 1862 in Milwaukee

Both the WERGIN family and the MAGRITZ family have ties to Dodge County. I am trying to determine who Anna Braunschweig nee Wergin is? (parents? birth date? siblings? any info?).

Looking forward to receiving any info you may have.

Thanks...Tom

I had answered your post previously and it seems to have disappeared. I have a copy of the book on the Herrings and It only shows Christina with the data we already have. Evidently they lived in the twp of Brunswick which is another form of Braunschweig. According to my book Ludwig Hering's original name was spelled Horing with the " over the o to show the correct German pronunciation. His son, Ludwig Hering II used the one r also but some of his children used the Herring spelling. After the Civil War most of the Herring's used the Herring spelling according to my book. Thank you for responding.
Colleen

Hi Amanda,
The book I have is "The Herring-Hering--Haring Family of Pennsylvania, Part F" by Calvin Adam Herring member of the Historical Society of Berks County...... 1966.

Yes, Horing was his original name with the " over the o. I think it is called an umlaut. "The original form of spelling Horing and Hering were often interchangeably in referring to the same individual. It is the equivalent of German "e" and the English "a". The German form Hering was the most common until about the American Civil War. Since then the English form Herring, has predominated north of the South Mountain, Reading to Easton, PA, and the Dutch form, Haring, south of it. Other less common forms are Harring and Hearing, generally north and south of South Mountain respectively," page 10.

In this book they do list him as LUDWIG HORING (Hering). After a brief history of him they say "The spelloing of the family name on Ludwig's tombstone, the German inscription being still readable , is Horing, undoubtedly his born name. Identifying the dead exactly as baptiized was common practice." pg 79. The 'o' should have the " over it anytime it is used in the name Horing. There is a way to do it on a computer, but I don't recall how.

All of his children seem to use the Hering name and then I notice on his son Ludwig Hering, II that he used the name Hering but part of his children used the name Herring. It was probably used as Herring after this generation. Ludwig II is my connection. Which of Ludwig I's children are you descended from?

They have just put Brunswick on the Gen Forum if anyone wishes to look at it.

Happy Hunting,
Colleen Yates

June 27, 1734,
was an immigrant from Germany on Sept. 30, 1754, at Philadelphia.
He died Feb 16, 1788 in (West) Brunswick twp. Berks, now Schuylkill
County, PA.
