J,

I sent you an email with my info! Also, I found my information that I have and I only have 11 children listed for Joel Johnson and Joyce Smith (which probably means mine is incorrect) but two of the children are Jessie Theodore Johnson (b 10/28/1872) and Van Smith Johnson (b 5/1/1875). I am a descendent of their oldest child, John Dixon Johnson (b 3/26/1858)!!!

Jess
Double Wow! Jessica!

I did some research almost 20 years ago on the Johns(T)on family history because there was almost none, that this little branch of Johnson's knew of. I am sure it's the same Johnson's if Joyce Latice Smith was the mother of the 13 kids. The 13th died within a day. I am related direstly to Jesse Theodore Johnson ( who put a "T" in our last name after moving to Chicago). He had a brother named Van Smith Johnson that seemed to have moved to Chicago with him.
Joyce Smith's father I believe was a Judge in Henrico, Co. Virgina. Joel Johnson was born about 1837 maybe in North Carolina but his ancesters came from there. He may have met Joyce as his elders were moving to Missouri for some reason. Very likely they had a background in mining and may have been coming to Missouri for the lead mining there.
I have a picture of Joel (sometimes Joal) Washington and Joyce and four of their eldest boys one is probably my great grandfather, and a horse :) in front of their house in Glenwood, Mo.
I just thought answering your inquiry from 8-9 years ago was a heck of a long-shot.
My direct email is jayjayjr1@yahoo.com.
I have a box of records and notes on everthing I found out about the Johns(t)on's. I talked with several distant cousins that lived in the South and most would be long-gone now. I'm 54. I live in Milwaukee, WI with what probably is a nice small group of your distant cousins starved for family info.

Please write me back,

Almost certainly cousin Jim (call me J), lot's of Jim's and Jesse's, LOL

Wow, this is amazing. I posted the message 9 years ago when I was in college at the University of Missouri. I'm now working for the University and my old student email is linked with my new work email, that's the ONLY reason this message came through!!! I would love to connect with you to learn about the information you have on Joel Washington Johnson. Again, wow. It's been awhile since I've looked up any information on my family, but thank you so much for posting!

Mic Barnette is related to sister Aminda Clemintine who married James J Arnold. His last known email was barnette@neosoft.com. He shows Loney born 08 Oct 1836 who married Thomas M McLain. He says Sarah Coffee's father was Lewis and mother Elizabeth. Did you get the Bible record from Claire? I have a copy. Also there is a file at Georgia Archives on Jesse that has a letter written to the Archives by Lucille Arnold Hobbs from Dublin Georgia in 1947. This is not a proven line for me but I have some information and thought I would share. good luck....

I am now searching for more information about Sara Coffey Brawner. I have found information that she died in Atlanta in 1893. Would anyone happen to have an obit for her?

After examining many documents I have sorted out Henry D Brawner and his wives. There is a H.D. Brawner who married Mollie Fortenberry 25 DEc 1882 in Bartow County, GA. His father according to his son Curn's death certificate was William Brawner. This Henry and Mollie are buried in Caddo Cem Johnson County, TX. In the same cemetery is Henry David Brawner who married Florence Gaddis in 1895. This Henry was born 12 April 1861 in Bartow County, GA and died 03 Sept 1925 in TX. They had seven children: Bessis Lee, Dewey, Daniel W, Willie, Bobbie, Holland, and Johnnie. Henry who married FLorence first married Anna Bowen 27 Oct 1882 Bartow County, GA. They had four children: Hiriam, Marion C, Mamie Joe, and Tina. Anna died 17 Sept 1894 and is buried in GOrdon County, GA. Now who can tell me about the Father of Henry who married Mollie named William?

I have a May/Mary R Brawner married to Joseph Creamer in St. Clair Co, IL. In the 1850 census records in St. Clair, Joseph Creamer and his wife Mary are living with several children, possibly not all theirs, and Hyacinth Brawner, born 1815 MD who is most likely Mary's sister.

Joseph Creamer died in 1856 and I cannot find Mary or Hyacinth or the children again.

I see that Hyacinth is listed as the daughter of Jerome Brawner and Mary Keepers, but I cannot find who Mary's parents were. She is listed in the 1850 census records as born in MD in 1813.

Jeanine Scholz

However I was told that no BRAWNER in this project ever completed the testing.

I believe the number of persons in a project should not be displayed until Familytree DNA has the results of their test. This is very deceiving.

Brawner/Bronner Tennessee Georgia

I am looking for more information on William Bronner/Brawner/Bronier from Tennessee. In family records that I have, he is listed as the father of my great-grandmother (times three), Lorena (Lowany) Bronner b. 1836. Those same records also list his wife's name as "Sarah". I found Lorena (Lowany) Bronner on the 1850 Cenus in Jackson County, Georgia with her mother Sarah Bronner b. 1813 (birth place listed as North Carolina) and Lorena's siblings which are listed as Salina b. 1835, Sarah M. b. 1839 Mary b. 1841 and Armena b. 1844 all born in Georgia. If anyone has any additional information, please let me know.

This is the only information I have about an Ida May Brawner. Hope it is useful.

Benjamin Franklin Brawner, born November 27, 1852 in Franklin County, Kentucky and died on February 26, 1926. Ben married Mariah Leona Botkins and had children; Emma Elizabeth, Louis Manley, Mary Ellen, Ida Mae, John Henry, Lency Thomas and Sarah Ann. Benjamin Franklin Brawner, his wife, Mariah and several of their young children are buried at the Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklin County, Kentucky. Benjamin was not named in the will of John Brawner, however, on April 2, 1864, Archibald Moore was appointed guardian to Benjamin F. and William Brawner, sons of John Brawner, deceased. Signed by Archibald Moore and James Hulett.

Re: Joseph Brawner/Sarah Chapman

Hi,

I have never seen any compelling documentary evidence that this couple were actually the parents of any children other than one daughter by the name of Chloe. It seems more likely that the nephew of the man you mention might have been the parent of the Madison County, Georgia Brawners. That man, Joseph Brawner, was the son of Edward Brawner and Elizabeth Wheeler. His wife's name is not known. I should mention, though, that I have seen no documentary evidence for this man either. He has simply been mentioned to me by another researcher as a possible father for my Sarah Brawner (Griffith).

If the Joel you are descended from is the man who married Betsy King, he actually seems to be the right age to be the grandson of this later Joseph Brawner, rather than a son. The Joseph who married Sarah Chapman was even a full generation older, and so even less likely to be Joel's father. Sarah Chapman also reportedly had another husband by the name of Jackson with whom she had four children, though I'm not sure whether they were older or younger than Chloe Brawner.

Since several Brawner men were in the Madison County area, it seems likely that Joel is the son of one of those men, rather than the son of either of the Josephs mentioned above.

Joseph & Mary Brown seem to have known children
Basil & Nancy Campbell same
Jesse & Sarah Goolsby same
Henry & Celia Brown same

None of the above had a *known* son named Joel. The only Brawner in the area of the correct age without already known children was a William. No other info about him.

So the bottom line seems to be that there is no real proof of any connection of any of the individuals mentioned here to each other. Only the fact that the men mentioned above were in the same general area of Georgia ties them together. Beyond that, I've seen nothing.

John Wilmot
Joel Brawner 1798-1866 middle name Johnson

In March 2004 I presented the idea that one of Jesse Johnson Brawner's son's was named Joel not Joseph as some reported. Then a visit to his grave showed my theory to be correct. His tombstone read Joel J Brawner 01 Feb 1865 16 Dec 1953. Some thought it might be Joel Joseph but one living relative said no it was Johnson not Joseph.

This week I spent the entire week combing the estate papers of Jesse Johnson in Gordon County and at the Georgia Archives. My mission was to find Mary Catherine. I uncovered in some unindexed Gordon County boxes at the Archives the loose papers from that estate. I made copies (43 pages) and started reviewing them. When the estate was settled each living child received $26.40 and signed a receipt for the same. One receipt was signed "JJ Brawner, Jr." This means that Joel Johnson Brawner son of Jesse Johnson Brawner was probably named after his grandfather Joel. This means that Joel Brawner (1798) was JOEL JOHNSON BRAWNER. At last a middle name. Also, this sheds light on possible angles regarding the close relationship between Jesse Johnson Brawner and a man named Jesse Johnson. Perhaps Johnson was Joel Brawner's mother's maiden name and besides being good friends they were related. An investigiation into the Johnson line seems in order for the hunt for the parents of Joel Brawner. Anyone care to join this search?

Thanks for your reply. I would love to have copies of any primary source documentation you might find for Harris's wife. I've seen the DAR records that give her name as Brawner, but these are secondary, and I haven't been able to verify them.

I know her first name was Levicy. I have her obituary from an 1826 Knoxville newspaper.

The info I have on Harris Gammon proves his father was John Gammon, Sr. of Pittsylvania County and that he was a brother of William Gammon, Sr. of that county. This comes from a 1783 general merchandise store account book for Col. John Wilson's store in Pittsylvania County.

I recently visited Jack Brawner in Florida and the name Harris Gammon came up frequently as we try to break through our brick wall Joel Brawner. According to some papers I copied from him Elizabeth Brawner was the spouse of Harris Gammon. Peggey Maness of Dallas Texas writes that the DAR index verifies this. I have many papers to go through from Jack and if you will remind me I will give you any further information I find. I would appreciate your info on Harris Gammon.
