I live in Indianapolis IN but my grandfather Joe Pete Braxton was from philadelphia mississippi. I am having trouble finding his history so far, does his name sound familiar? There are alot of Braxtons out here, but none of us seem to know eachother, his other spouses' children have never been in contact with half siblings. I'm not sure where to begin. jacqueiib@yahoo.com

You did a great job on the research! I thought you were a family member. I spent the entire day doing research mostly on the move of the cemetery in 1960. But one little tidbit I found regarding Carter Braxton may help us. I'm going to crash now, but can you call me on my cell sometime tomorrow when you have the opportunity (301-518-3938). Thanks

Hi Alyce!

I am actually the photographer of the Fox 5 piece. I was also the one doing the research. I had posted here hoping to find a descendent of the Braxtons. I have found out much more about the family. Unfortunately it apprears Louisa's 3 children died before she did. Unless she had a child between 1910 and her death in 1916 at age 50, then there are no direct descendents of Carter and Louisa Braxton.

I had wanted to post the information I have in case anyone else is researching the family. Here is most of what I was able to find:

*Mary Louisa Braxton

b. 1865 in Culpeper, VA, according to her gravestone

-father Christopher “Kit” Lindsey/Lindsay/Lindsy b. about 1838 in VA (parents b in VA according to 1880 US Census)

-mother Hannah b. about 1842 in VA (parents b in VA/1880 Census)

Louisa is listed as “M.L.” in the 1880 census, so given name likely an “M” name, but she went by her middle name …

In 1880, they lived in Stevensburg, Culpeper, Va

District Deputy of the U.O. of T. (according to her gravestone) Narcissus Tent 103 (?)

"The United Order of Tents, one of the oldest lodges for African-American women in the country, was founded in Norfolk. It was secretly organized by two slave women, Annetta M. Lane and Harriet R. Taylor; and two abolitionist, Joliffe Union and Joshua R. Giddings as a part of the underground railway, assisting slaves to escape to the north. It was formally organized and publicly recognized after the end of the Civil War. "

Active in her church

“The fair that is going on at the Vermont Avenue Baptist church has been quite a success, under the chairmanship of Mrs. Carter Braxton. She is on of the most enterprising ladies in the church.”

-The Washington Bee, November 25, 1899
d.
All my ancestors back to 1885 were buried at Harmony Cemetery. I don't know if you saw the news report, but Fox 5 reported on Mar 12,2009 that gravestones from the old Harmony Cemetery in DC were found recently in King George County (75 miles from DC). Apparently the gravestones were discarded when the cemetery moved to its current location in Landover, MD. The headstone for Louisa Braxton was one of the ones Fox News pictured and they did some research on her. Reportedly, her headstone reads "District Deputy of the United Order of Tents". There is more info about her on the web. See www.myfoxdc.com "Gravestones Found on Potomac's Edge..." for the pictures of her gravestone and more information about her. I will do all I can to help you get more info and try to get that headstone returned to its rightful place. I am in the same situation with regard to all my ancestors buried at Harmony. Please email me soonest.

Carter & Louisa Braxton, Washington, DC early 1900's

I'm looking for descendents of Carter B Braxton, born Dec 1864 in VA (1900 US Census), he was a carpenter/builder, don't know when or where he died ...

and Louisa Lindsey, born Jan 1866 (or 1865) in Culpepper, VA, died April 18, buried April 21 1916 in Washington, DC.

They married about 1891.

A daughter Ruth was born about 1892, but apparently died before 1910. Another daughter, "Nola" or "Neola" or "Aeola" or ??? was born about 1902 in DC. Son Carter B Braxton was born about 1904 in DC. On the 1910 US Census, Kit Lindsey is listed as father-in-law of Carter.

I find no indication of the family on the 1920 or 1930 Census, anywhere in the country.

I am especially interested to find out more about Louisa Braxton. She was an officer in an organization called the "United Order of Tents". Louisa was originally buried in the "Columbian Harmony Cemetery" in Washington, DC. The cemetery was moved to Landover, MD, in 1960, but there is no listing for Louisa or (as I remember) any Braxton there.

It's possible family moved her somewhere else before the cemetery was moved. I would like to know where she is buried.

Thank you for any help.

A very thorough and interesting book about the complete personal and political life of Carter Braxton, titled
"Carter Braxton, Virginia Signer; A Conservative in Revolt",
Author: Alonzo Thomas Dill - may be viewed/checked out at most libraries or may be purchased from: University Press of America, Inc., Copyright 1983, 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, MD.,20706. My copy of this book was autographed by Mr.Dill.

Descendents of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. and his brother Walter Holland were told that we descended from Carter Braxton. My GFather had a picture of Carter Braxton that he showed and told me that we did descend thru him.
The search was started after I retired to find further proof that we did or did not descend thru Carter. Results of this search indicates to me that the information that had been passed-down to us was not true and the picture of Carter was a hoax. William C. Braxton, Jr.
-----------------------------------

Updated:
Results of family search of Carter Braxton: By two wives, Carter was father of 18 children. Of the 18, only 6 males lived to adulthood. Of those 6, AGE WISE the first three
could have been father of Oliver and Walter Holland - as they were born during mid 1760 period. Whereas Oliver was born: 1798 and Walter: 1807.
I too have just started tracing history - looking for a relative - a Charlotte Quick or Benton married a Braxton and had a daughter - Sally or Sarah Braxton, who married a Wesley T. Lewis. Sarah was born 1871, died 1939. Sound like the same Braxton family? Please reply! Thanks, Page Lewis

His parents Elijah Braxton and Dosie Dail Braxton. Elijah was the son of Elias Braxton and Sarah Sutton. Parents of Elias Braxton were James Braxton and Martha Crawford.
Evidence points to the parents of James Braxton being John Braxton and Hannah. I believe that the parents of John Braxton who married Hannah were John Braxton and Mary , both born around 1730 in England and came to Pitt around 1850.
Later, Carol

CArter Braxton was one of the Virginia singers of the Declaraton of Independence. He lived in King WIlliam County, VA, married twice and had many children. He also owned many slaves. A book entitled, Carter Braxton, Virginia Signer records the life and times of this plantation owner, merchant and ship owne.

Mary Jo, During the early part of my search, based on the information that I had, I was "most certain" that we descended from Carter. During that period I made 2 trips to the Williamsburg and D.C. area gathering information about Carter. I visited both plantations that he owned(Chericoke and Ellysing Green). Also the the old St. Johns Church nearby where he served as vestryman. Also the Shirley plantation which was home of Robert King Carter and birth place of Mary Carter, the mother of Carter Braxton. I also met and visited in the home of Alonzo Dill, author of the book about the personal and political life of Carter. I obtained the family tree of Carter dating back to 1530 in Whitchurch, England.
I have searched trying to find connection/proof that we did descend thru him but to no avail. Since I've been unable to find name of the Father of my GG-GFather: Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. I searched the family of Carter. Of the six sons of Carter(age wise) either George or Carter, Jr. could have been his father - as both were born in the mid 1760's and my GG-GFather was born 1798. Neither George or Carter, Jr. had a son named Oliver O. Braxton.
Based on the information I have/have not found, I am "most certain" that we did not descend thru Carter.
In the event that I may have overlooked and important clue in the search trying to make the connection, I have taken the DNA Genealogical Test and would like to compare with a known/proven descendent of Carter. Can you help? I will pay fee for the test.
Many thanks, William Braxton

I am searching for info for my husband's grandfather, Walter Leroy Braxton, Sr. He was born 02 Oct 1922 in Florence, SC. He died in North Carolina, and resided in Teaneck,NJ for some years. There's a story that his name may have been Brockington at one time, in his younger years, though we don't know why. No info is known of his parents' names, and although I can find one census from 1930 that could be his mother and siblings, I can't be sure either. It shows his mother (no father in the home) as Jane Brockington. If anyone is familiar with this family, I'd love to hear from you!
You can contact me directly at chelemdl@yahoo.com
Thanks

It seems like everyone who is a Braxton on these forums has ties to Virginia. My father was born in Richmond, and his mother, Dorothy Ruth Braxton (Travers), was born in James City, VA. Don't know much about my ancestors, all I have is what I found through the 1930 census which lists my then 6-year-old grandmother as the youngest of six children of Lander and Gertrude Braxton. Anyone have any info on my great-grandparents, as well as my great aunts and uncles: Alex McKinley, William Albert, Mary Elizabeth, Willie, and Irene Rebecca.

Hello. I am the grand-daughter of the late Hazel Lee Young born August 8, 1924 who later married Paul C. Young. My grandmother's father's name was Joseph Braxton, and I was told by my grandmother that her mother passed away when she was a child and that her name was "Zeenie" Braxton. I am unsure as to what my great-grandmother's true first name was other than "Zeenie".
If anyone is familiar or knows anything, that would be wonderful!
Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. was my GG-GFather. According to the 1850 Census of Henry County, Al.: He was age 52(Born: 1798 in SCarolina). His wife Darcus Miller was age 40(Born: 1810 in SCarolina). They migrated from SCarolina to Henry County Al. during late 1820 period, and while living there he owned 5 parcels of land. He & Darcus had 8 children born while living there.
Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. had one brother: Walter Holland Braxton (Also listed in 1850 Census of Henry County, Al. - Age 43 (Born: 1807 in SCarolina). On migration with Oliver O. & Darcus, Walter Holland stopped in Baldwin County, Ga., got married, and later joined Walter Holland & Darcus in Henry County. Both families: Oliver O., Sr. & Walter Holland further migrated sometime between 1850-55 into the area of Cerrogordo(presently Holmes County/Westville), Florida.
During Civil War three of the sons of Oliver O., Sr. went down to Vernon, Fl. and joined the Confederate Army. They were: Oliver O.(BUCK) Braxton, JR. - Isom/Isham Braxton(My G-GFather) - and Benjamin. After 3 months serving in Confederate Army all 3 went AWOL. Oliver O., JR. was apprehended and transferred to join the battle in Petersburg/Richmond area. On 6-25-1864 he was admitted to Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond - suffering from Rubeola & was medically discharged to return home to his family. Isom/Isham and Benjamin were not apprehended by the Conferedate. Three months after going AWOL, both joined the Union Army. (Oliver O., JR. Buried: Holmes Cty., Fl. - Isom/Isham Buried: Conecuh Cty, Al. - Benjamin Buried: Near Braxton, Ms.)
Still searching for proof of name of FATHER of Oliver, Sr. and his brother Walter Holland.
William C.
Re: Carter Braxton Lineage

Jeanette,

I have Carter Braxtons family tree back to the first RECORDED Braxton name in 1530 in Whitchurch, England.

I am trying to verify whether or not we descended thru Carter - as we have been told that we did; however as of this date we have been unable to prove the name of the FATHER of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. and his brother Walter Holland. Without being able to penetrate this brickwall, we are unable to prove from whom we descended.

I have taken the 12-marker DNA genealogical test and am presently seeking a known/proven descendent of Carter to match his DNA with mine. Any help or information would be very much appreciated. Many thanks,

William Braxton, 5088 Braxton Ln., Pace, Fl. 32571-8957
==========================================================
