Always glad to hear from "Brayfields"...I do have the will of John Brayfield- Charles Co Md, signed May 11, 1720 and recorded July 12th 1720. This will lists his children as son John, daughter Mary, daughter Margarett.

I have the final accounting of John Brayfield - Charles co MD - concluded June 5th 1745 - Listing Wife Elizabeth, children mary, mark, margaret, and elizabeth.

I have the final accounting of Robert Brayfield - Charles co MD - concluded Feb 10th 1807 - Listing wife Elizabeth and children Mark, Margaret, Walter, John, and William.
This is the Robert that is "Old" Walters father....It is all very confusing because they all married Elizabeths, and named the children John, Mark, Margaret etc...LOL

I believe that this Robert is Marks son(from the 1745 John) but have not found the "link" it may not exist as the records from that far back are sketchy at best but always looking. ;)
Please concact me if you need more info...I have copies of all this...I also have a picture of "old" Walters headstone in Bear Point Cemetary near Sesser Illinois.

Hope this is helpful
Bev
bevnwade@comcast.net
What an exciting message! I am descended from "Old" Walter Brayfield and Elizabeth L. Mitchell through their daughter, Sarah O. Brayfield who married Sanford J. Hammond in Franklin Co., Illinois. Do you have and are you willing to share copies of the will?? Could you be more specific about exactly where it is recorded? What book and page so that I can easily order it? I would much appreciate it because I have not been able to fin
de it although I did find a Robert Brayfield listed in the 1800 Charles Co., Maryland Census.

I forgot--there were two men named Mark Brayfield from different generations. Yours was the younger one, the son of Robert. Mine was the older generation, the only son of John. I have never seen any research proving how they are related.

Isn't interesting some cases take years and years to find the connections, and sometimes you look and there they are. In looking at your research, I think my line of Brayfield's comes from Mark Brayfield - which was your Robert Brayfield's brother. I knew with all the Brayfield's out there, they had to be related somewhere way back. Did any of your research give information about Robert's ancestors? I haven't been searching this far back very long, and haven't done anything yet in Maryland. Thought I would ask what you may have to share before delving in.

Hi,
it happens to be that I am from a branch of the elusive brayfield family, where Maggie (actual full name) and husband became the Imrie-Brayfields, as it happens some of the names definitely appear to correlate with the names I have, and as it happends Brayfield is a false name and was changed from (we think) Braxfeld after the embarresment of a brayfield being a corrupt judge, my great great great great granfather (I think thats the correct amount of greats), anyway if you have any questions I may be able to help as my mother (child of Avard Imrie brayfield) knows alot about the family tree, and that many of the brayfields are in canada, australia, a few in new zealand, and one or two in sicily.

Feel free to conatct me
Jack-k-1@hotmail.co.uk
Well after YEARS of searching/hunting I believe we (my aunt and I) have found the father of "OLD" Walter Brayfield b) 1793 VA & married Elizabeth Mitchell in Overton Co TN. His Father was Robert Brafield b) bet 1755 - 1774 d) Late 1806 or early 1807 Charles Co MD. Married a woman named Elizabeth and had 5 children Mark, Margaret, Walter, John, William. The will lists all the children very clearly and the will or Final Account of his "estate" was recorded Feb. 1807 in Charles Co Md

Thank you for your response. I will happily take any information that you may provide.

Dr. Brayfield was the Simmons' family physician, who made house calls to Claude John and Nancy Hanks (Marrs) Simmons' home in Christopher, Illinois. The Simmons reared my mother, Almeta Myrle Marrs, from the age of two when her mother died. Dr. Brayfield is also related to Mary Elzada Hammond, my great-great grandmother, who married Charles Jasper Lafayette Cross. My mother, Almeta married into the Cross family.

Do you happen to know anything about Dr. B. F. Brayfield's second wife, Beulah Royal? I have information from a census record listing a Beulah Royal as the daughter of Martin G. and Laura L. Kelso. There must be a story there!

Thanks, Janis Cross

Steve (as well as any other family members),

Hello from California. It has been a couple of years since your post so I hope you are still watching this board.

I have just started researching my husbands family line this year. His gg grandparents were William Ramsey & Martha Ann Hammond as well. His great grandparents were Guy Claudis Ramsey & Sarah Elizabeth Alvis. His grandparents were Guy Ramsey Jr & Mildred Lorene Baggett. He doesn't have alot of information on his family line so the researching has been interesting. Can I ask which of William & Martha's children you descend from?

Would you be willing to share your info with me? My inlaws are making a trip to Illinois this week and will be taking some gravesite pictures for me(assuming they can find the sites) and I would be happy to share them with you.

I would also welcome contact with anyone else who may have info on this family line or is looking for more info on the research I have done so far.

Regards,
Leah Underwood
kululeah@comcast.net

Seeking any additional information on Allie Brayfield m. Frank Hargett. He was killed in a mining accident about 1923. IOOF cemetery records for DuQuoin, IL say she is buried next to him. However, it looks like her tombstone may have had a plaque on it, which is now missing. Her marriage license said that she was born in Brayfield, Franklin Co., IL. 1920 census shows them living in DuQuoin; her age 17; no children. I would like information on her parents, any siblings, but most of all, what happened to her after Frank died.

Fran,

were these the same Brayfields that ran the Brayfield funeral home in Sesser? If so, they were the ones that interred some of my family that are buried in Maple Hill cemetary.
My grandparents were Alva B. Wallace & Mayzelle (Cook) Wallace- grandpa died at his home in Coello,IL in 1987 & my grandma died Sept 28,1945 (30 years before I was born) when they lived in Valier.Gr-grandparents buried there (grandma's parents) Charles/Chas. Cook & Hattie (Owens) Cook

I was wondering if there were any family connections between the Wallaces,Cooks or Brayfields. I know that my Wallace family came from Missouri & the Cooks were from TN.
I would love to hear from anyone with imfo. I did not know that one of the Brayfields was a doctor- any recollection of a dr by the name of O. L. Rutherford?

any imfo greatly appreciated,
Lillie M.
Iona,
thank you for your reply. Yes, my Cook family came up to the area from Bradley Co, TN where my gr-grandpa Charlie/Chas Cook was a printer by trade there when he was 18 & then when he moved to IL, he started working in the southern IL railroads/coal mines. The family must have moved around alot because 3 or 4 of their 6 kids were born in TN,one was born in KY & another was born in W Va- before they ended up in IL
One of my cousins mentioned something about some of our family being married to Brayfields but I've yet to find out the connection
thanks again for your post

Lillie

Line of John Brayfield, died 1745, Charles County, MD

Looking at this line a bit closer, it appears that a generation is missing or the census is totally off.

The will of John, probated June 1745, names his children with Robert first. This would imply (but not totally prove) that Robert was the oldest.

The 1800 census of Charles County, MD (Trinity Parish), page 72, shows Robert and his family. Robert and his wife are both aged 26-44 (born 1766-1774). Obviously, he could not be the son named in the 1745 will.

Has anyone found the widow Elizabeth Davis and her husband Gerald Mankin Davis in the 1810 census to verify the ages? The Charles County neighborhood can be found with some of the neighbors of 1800--Hatch Dent, John Gill, Walter Mudd--but no Davis.

Also, the widows of John in 1745 and Robert in 1807 both remarried. Has anyone looked for the wills of their second husbands or themselves to see if the Brayfield children are named?

Thanks, Nedra

What about the Mark Brayfield, who left a will in Bedord co PA? it's dated 2 Jun 1802 and proved on 3 Jun 1802, names children in age order by sex as John, Samuel, Mella Blair, Kerenhappuch Howser (m Simon Howsare), Sarah Hartelo, Mary Werley. He owned a "plantation" in Allegany co MD. We belive the Mella Blair is my husband's 3rd greatgrandmother, Amelia Brayfield Hagerman Blair. At her first marriage to John Hagerman, in Frederick co MD, Mark Brayfield gave consent for her marriage. Couldn't he be the son of Robert?

Hi Lillie:
The Brayfield Funeral Home was founded by my great uncle, Harl Brayfield. Uncle Harl died in 1960 but the funeral home continued to operate under the Brayfield name for many years but was sold several years ago to the Gilbert Funeral Home Family of Christopher.
Dr Rutherford was from Christopher many years ago.
Dr Brayfield was a brother to my greatgrandfather, Thomas Brayfield, who was Uncle Harl's father.
As for the Wallaces and Cooks - no relation to the Brayfields but a Brayfield granddaughter married a George Washington Cook and the Cooks came to Illinois from Tennessee either with or about the same time as the Brayfields. For years there was annual event -"Brayfield, Hammond, Mitchell, Johnson and Cook Reunion" Keep in touch!

I too am a W. Brayfield descendent. His first son Robert b1819TN m Mary Stevens and had Permilia Brayfield b1842 she married Reuben Hammond who died in the Civil War. Walter Brayfield and possibly a couple other families (Cooks)came to Franklin county IL. in 1838 others came a few years later. Two possible fathers of Walter Brayfield could be Sam and Robert Brayfield both of MD 1790-1800. Robert possibly went to KY in 1800. I believe Walter is somehow related to either one or both of these guys because of the names. Robert was Walters first son.

Re: Walter Brayfield

Toby,
I have found the same info, and I think we can surmise from this that Walter was Roberts son and he was born about 1793 in MD not VA. Charles county is just across the river from Virginia, and back then it may have been part of VA. or Walter wasn't really sure where he was born. In 1800 MD census there are 2 Brayfields at opposite ends of MD. Samuel is in Fredrick county MD and has recently been married to a woman with kids. When you look at the census of 1800 I believe the children match up to the number on the estate of Robert in 1807. I believe one son MARK goes to KY or IN. If you look in the census of 1810 or 1820 you will find him. Another reason I believe Walter is son of Robert is that Walter names his oldest son Robert. His next oldest son is named Samuel so there may be a connection to the Sam in Fredrick county also. I descend from the first son Robert, who had Permelia. She married Reuben Hammond in about 1859. Their daughter Martha married William Ramsey my GG Grandparents. Just as a side light I have found a Mark and a John back in the early 1700's in PA and then in MD. Wish we could link them all together.

Steve Schneider
