Hello Joshua
Cyrus was a younger brother of Martin Brayman, my great grandfather. Their parents were Harvey Brayman and Jane Butts. Cyrus was not born in Brockville, rather upstate New York. Martin emigrated and was working in Brockville, Ontario around 1871 and married my great grandmother in 1875 in Brockville. It was here that they raised their 10 children. Another brother moved to Cornwall and a third that I have located also moved to Cornwall around the 1900's as best I can find. From my research, some of Martin's family came to Canada while others appeared to stay in upstate New York.
As far as my research has found there are 10 siblings in the Harvey Brayman/Jane Butts clan, 7 boys and 3 girls.
Please e-mail me at h_nblack@sympatico.ca for further information.
I too would be very interested in finding our more about your relationship to the Brayman clan and what information that you might have.
Heather Black

My great grandmother was Aurelia Russell (married Lawrence in January 1936). She gave me some information years ago about his family. She didn't know his father's or mother's names (something I recently ran across at www.nnyln.org in an obituary from the Norwood News from Wednesday, May 3, 1933), but she had names of siblings.

The obituary of Cyrus Brayman I found says that the parents were Mark and Jane (Butts) Brayman. It said Cyrus was born in 1856 in Brockville, Ontario. According to the obit, the family came to Norwood 20 years prior to that. It confirmed my grandmother's information of him having siblings of Thomas, Lawrence, and Luke. It also confirmed her information about Alice and Anna being his sisters. It didn't include a set of twins that she mentioned (James and Jenny).

Does any of this tie into what you have? I was able to follow Cyrus's family through the archives at that website. I have Lawrence's and Aurelia's line (obviously). For the others, I just have where they lived from the obituary.

I’ve checked several online databases and can’t find the info you need. You need to order original records now. You should concentrate on getting the death certificates. They can include: parents’ names, spouses’ names, cause of death, location of death, location of burial, etc.

To get Effner's death certificate, try the Oakland County Clerk: https://www.oakgov.com/crts0005/forms/buyDeath.jsp

His death certificate should indicate where he died (may indicate Clinton Valley) and why he died. His mental condition may be added, too.

You could also get his death record through a Family History Center (aka Mormon Genealogy Center.) See their website at familysearch.org to look at their library catalog and to find the center nearest to you.

Since you don’t know in which county George died, to get his death certificate try http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deathapp_6467_7.pdf. They will search for three years at a time. You know the date is between 1920-1930, so that helps.

You should also concentrate on getting other original records, such as birth and SSA.

You won’t be able to order Effner’s or Mildred’s birth certificate until 2015, since birth records are restricted for 100 years unless you meet eligibility requirements.

You can, however, order the Oakland index to births (1867 - 1937) at a Family History Center.

George would not have a Social Security Application (and almost surely not a death record) since he died before Social Security was enacted.

Also, take another look at the census record you mentioned re: Maggie “Jr” The marking does not have “Jr.” It has some other tallying note that the cesus taker was making – It keeps occurring over and over on that page.

I hope all this gives you some places to start with your searches!

I am so very sorry! Maggie is his mother and Ladoria was his wife. Ladoria Hull remarried after Effner's death. Sheesh. Got myself confused too.

Documents showing George as Effner's father:

1900 census for George Brayman, wife Maggie. The preview says that they are the same age, but the years of birth on the original match up to other records.

1910 census for George BRYMAN, wife Maggie, daughter Millie.

1920 census for George BREMEN, wife Maggie, daughter Millie, and son Elmer.

1930 census for Maggie and Elmer Brayman. By this time, Maggie was widowed. Can't find death certificate/SSDI info on George.

I do have a full access account. I'm just finding it extremely difficult to locate this particular side of the family. Another thing that's bothering me is that some of these documents state that George and Maggie are 10 years apart, but others are listing their birthdates differently. The birthdates are listed as either 1889, 1883, or 1876. All Maggies/Margarets have the same relative info, so I don't know where I'm messing up.

Thanks again for all your help!

I'll see what strategies I can come up with. I'm guessing that 90% of what you want is NOT going to be available online, but I'll try to come up with how you can search for it.

In your first message you said that Maggie was Effner's mother, but in this one you say she's his wife...? I'm confused!

Did you know that there's a tree at ancestry.com that has Effner's wife as "Ladoria Mae Hull"? I don't believe they list a source, though. Take a look.

Also at ancestry.com is George Brayman's WWI registration. Did you see that? (In fact, do you have full access to ancestry.com? That will help.)

Thanks so much for your reply and offer to help. Here are the things I am looking for:

Anything proving that Effner was at Clinton Valley, but my hopes are for proof and a diagnosis of his condition and what he was being treated for. From my research, Effner and Maggie weren't married very long before he died. Maggie was married in 1920 census and widowed by 1930 - Effner would have been 50-60 years old I think.

Effner's and George's cause of death - they died middle-aged I believe.

George's and Effner's death certificate or something from SSDI for George since I already have the SSDI record for Effner.

Effner's burial site.

Both George and Maggie's parents names. I'm not 100% on whether or not I got Maggie's parents' names right. I keep getting results for her parents as either William and Ida or Moses and Margaret. There are a few Margaret Wordens around the same age in that family line, so its confusing.

Anything about previous marriages or spouses of all three. I found a Margaret that is the same age but her role was step-daughter.

There are also two census records for Maggie in 1900. I'm not really sure if they are the same person, however, on one of the census' reporting her and Effner/Elmer, it indicates that she is Maggie "Jr." Which census is it and is it possible for someone to have been listed twice in the same year?

I'm very new at this so any help would be so very appreciated. Just FYI, most of the Brayman surnames are misspelled. I've found accurate records with Bremen and Bryman for example. Thanks so much for your help!!

It seems that you have a lot of good info that can be used to go back even further. I think your best bet is to choose a specific piece of missing info you want and concentrate on that.

What specific info to you want to find next? George and Maggie's marriage license? Or their obits? Effner's death record? There are lots of ways you could go here...

When you say you need help with the hospital info, do you mean how can you prove Effner Brayman was there?

If you narrow it down, I'll see what I can find -- and I'm sure others will jump in, too.
Searching Brayman in Clinton Valley in Pontiac Michigan

I've done my research on the message boards and the net and see that Michigan prohibits the release of past medical records even if the patient is deceased. I'm searching for Effner Brayman, DOB 25 May 1915, DOD 31 May 1971. I was able to find him in the SSDI and his parents, but there is a lot of missing information. Father is George Brayman and Maggie (Worden) Brayman. Effner's living son Timothy didn't know a thing about him other than he spent his life and even died in the Clinton Valley psychiatric hospital (previously Eastern Michigan Assylum for the Insane and later Pontiac State Hospital). 1900 census shows Maggie and George, 1910 shows Maggie, George, and Millie Bryman (only 1 a), can't find 1920, and 1930 shows Maggie and "Elmer" Brayman, but the original document says Effner. It also says that Maggie is widowed with only Effner living with her - both George and Millie have disappeared by 1920 since no census was found. I'm so stuck! Need help with the hospital info and finding further on Maggie, George, and Millie. Please??

Questions, questions!

Hello. In Dec. '94, my sister and I found outt, quite by accident, that our paternal grandparents were Jewish. And apparantly, much to the surprise of my Irish Catholic Mother! My Father died eight years ago and most of his family is gone, so there is no one to ask. My sister, cousin and I are dying to find out more. My cousin once asked my grandmother for family history and was told, "to let the past stay in the past!" Wow, does THAT just make us more curious or WHAT! She has heard of a ship that came over called the HMS Bremen and thought that might have soome connection to the surname and German town. Our Great Grandfather's name was John D. Brayman and was supposedly a german Jew annd his wife was possibly an Eenglish Jew. We're trying to start constructing a family tree, but it's pretty hard when you find out no one's been willing to talk! Want to know what the "big mystery" is and why it was kept a secret. This branch of the family, started out in the Philadelphia, PA region.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

She died in 1922 from a fall down a flight of stairs as she had severe diabetis and was blind. She married Charles W. Ferris and they had four or five children, Edna Mae Ferris, Earl Lawerance Ferris, Charles Edward Ferris, and Amy Ferris, there are records stating they had a Freddie Ferris who died at 2 months old. Anyone with any information regarding this lady would be greatly appreciated. I have alot of Ferris information but I am stuck on Imogene.
