Brazil - An Irish name?

Joe Brazil  (View posts) Posted: 29 Jun 2000 9:39PM GMT
My information on my family unfortunately only goes back about 3 generations, and I've always wondered what country my ancestors came from. My family has always clung to their own pronunciation of our surname, and we pronounce it like "Brazzle". I've been told that this is very likely an Irish name, and that in Gaelic it means "War". If anyone has any information about whether this is correct, or at least a possibility, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am told that my great, great grandfather, Thomas Brazil, created a small town in Southeast Kansas during the days of the wild west, and named it "Brazilton". The town still has a few residents, and they prounce it like "Brazzleton".

If anyone has any information about any of the foreoing, I'd be very grateful. My e-mail address is jbrazil@emicmg.com. Thanks.
