Re: Genealogy of the Breck Family

Bob, I have a copy of Samuel Breck's "Genealogy of the Breck Family." The book is about the line of Edward of Dorchester, MA 1635. It is includes notes on the Brecks in England. It is very detailed as to the American Brecks but ends when it was written in 1889.

If you can send me more information about the parents of James William Breck, or as in Alta California, William Anthony Breck, born on 20 Oct. 1800, I am sure they are in the book and I will look them up for you. I did not find a reference to your James William or William Anthony. Much of the Breck genealogy on the web is from this book. Your ancestor was involved in a very interesting time in California history.

Breck Tostevin
Anchorage, Alaska
William Breck arrived in Santa Barbara in 1829, returned to Dorchester, Boston, Ma in 1829 when his father Jonathan Breck died, he returned a second time by land with 45 others, most of which returned to Boston in 1830. He and another continued to the west, were captured by Indians, the other guy was killed, Wm. Breck managed to convince the Indians that he was a Master Gunsmith, he later managed to escape with a British Fur Trading Company party, arrived on the west coast, tried to go home, but managed to land in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) for a couple of years. He helped the king on Hawaii requested that he stay and help with their weapons on the island. He later returned to Santa Barbara in 1832-3, where his wife to be was born. Francisca Antonia de Ortega, the great-granddaughter of Lt. Jose Francisco de Ortega, the first commander of the Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara on 21 April 1782.
I am one of their descendants, also of Lopez, Luis Manuel Quintero one of the founders of Los Angeles on 4 September 1781, and through my Olivera line, a descendant of Ensign George Stewart of the HMS Bounty, one of four non-mutiners, and the Houses of Brecc, De Bruce, Stewart, Tudor, Lancaster and others.
Rosamamond E. Griffith is my mother, a descendant of the Brecks, her mother, Rosamond Margaret Breck, the daughter of William Antonio Breck, born in 1852, one of a few children of William (James William) Anthony Breck of Dorchester, MA.

Bob Smith of Wilmington, Los Angeles, CA.

Edward Y Breck & family

On the 1930 census of Aliquippa, Beaver Co., PA, I find a 49-year-old widow, Catherine Breck. Listed with her is a son Allen Y., age 18. Research suggests that she is the widow and he is the son of Edward Y. Breck who died 16 Feb 1919. Edward's wife was Irene Ida Katharine Stutz who was born 25 Aug 1874 in DC and according to family sources died 1 Aug 1945. I find a Allen Y. Breck born 29 Dec 1911 who died 6 Aug 1996 on the Social Security Death Benefit Index which "fits" what little data I have pertainaing to Allen Yales Breck. I would like to hear from descendants of these people as they belong in a genealogy I am compiling consisting of all the descedants of Irene's immigrant grandfather.

Breck and Wisewall Families of Dorchester, MA

I am a descendant of Edward Breck, b. 1674, Dorchester, MA, who married Susannah Wisewall (Wiswall/Wisewell, other spellings), born about 1672, Roxbury, MA. I will look up the other information on the Brecks for you, on the family, I go back to about 1574, Lanchashire, Suffolk, England, also the Oliver, Hill, Mason, and other families of Dorchester, MA. from about 1632. Beyond 1829, I start to lose information, as my (James) William (Anthony) Breck, born on 20 Oct. 1800, traveled to Santa Barbara, Alta California in 1829, his father Jonathan Breck died in 1829, and William later married into the Ortega family (land owners of a ranch,of Santa Barbara. In 1832, his wife was born, they married in 1846, then he fought with LTC. Fremont against his wifes family to win (steal)California from the Californianos. Besides my California and Boston (Dorchester) side, I am also a Stewart, de Breck, de Bruce, MacAlpin, Tudor, and others of Scotland and England dating back to about 386 AD.
Genealogy of the Breck Family

Hello, I am a descendant of Edward Breck, born in 1574, England, his son, also Edward became an Indentured Servant who managed to arrive in Dorchester (Boston), MA prior to 1636. He was a freeman in 1636, a townsman and held office until he died. In my line, there are mostly Edwards, but a John and his grandson, a Jonathan Breck, born in Dorchester. Either James William Breck, or as in Alta California, William Anthony Breck, born on 20 Oct. 1800, traveled to Santa Barbara, Hawaii, China via the Horn in 1829. In 1846, he married a Francisca Antonia de Ortega, and raised a family in Santa Barbara, California. He also made a mistake, he fought with LTC Fremont in the California Battalion as an officer, and a gunsmith. I know very little of the activities of the Brecks after 1829, and any possible relatives to date. How much information is in the Book on the Brecks and what areas of the US does it cover and how far back. Bob Smith of Los Angeles.
