Sorry, it was not Alex Breck. who died in Staunton, Augusta, Va. it was Archibald Preston. I would love to be able to purchase the book you refer to on the Prestons. Apparently somehow we are related to the Prestons, for in Pa. as early as 1820, my g.g.grandfather, Samuel Staley, whose mother was Margaret Millar, a g. daughter of Janet Breckenridge whose mother was a Preston (or so the story goes) named her son Samuel, Samuel Preston Staley and the name has carried down to 1907 to my Uncle Glen Preston Staley, my brother, 1928, Richard Preston Butts, and my cousin Robert Preston Staley. I was thrilled to get the in-formation that we just may stem from the Preston family for it answers many of my questions on the naming of the individuals above, but I as of now, have absolutely no proof. I will endeavor to get same if available. I would very much like to purchase the book on the Prestons. Do you know where I might find it? Thanks so very much for your time. I know what it is like. I have been doing this for more than 55 years and have given so very much time to others, but look how much we learn. I did over 700 adoption cases searching for birthparents pro bono and it was a great feeling to put families back together again, but it cost me a ton, however, if there are rewards in the hereafter, I have staked a claim.Smile!
I have never heard of such a claim before. As far as I know, no one has ever found any proof that the Breckenridges of Franklin Co., PA were related to Alexander Breckenridge of Orange County, Virginia. They may have been related, but no proof of any kind as ever surfaced to my knowledge.

Are you aware of the book entitled, The Prestons of Smithfield and Greenfield in Virginia by John Federick Dorman? It has a copy right of 1982. This book starts of with the Preston history and then is followed by the history on the Breckinridges and Breckenridges, the famous Breckenridges of Viriginia and Kentucky.

Yes, I know. Thank you so very much Roger. Do you know if there is any validity to the claim to the Plantagenets? i.e. Janet Preston, Janet Breckenridges mother was the daughter of Archibald Preston and Mary Stewart. Purportedly the Stewarts go back through all of the Plantagenet kings as well as so many others. I had wondered for many years why my brother's middle name was "Preston", my cousin's as well, my uncle and my g. grandfather, Thomas Preston Staley. I was told by Gary Boyd Roberts ( THe great one) that it was indeed a scotch name as I had presumed, and had an idea that it was a surname, and indeed it was. I wonder if my g.g. grandmother knew she descended from the Royal Stewart line through her Preston family, if indeed she did.

Your line of Irish Culbertson and Janet Breckenridge settled in the area of Chambersburg, Franklin County, PA or that is the way I see it. North of Chambersburg is a little hamlet called Culbertson's Row. This was were these Culbertson's and Breckenridge resided back in about 1730 and through much of the 1800s. I kind of think of Culbertson's Row as "Brigadoon," if you know what I mean by Brigadoon. It was a little hamlet that came to life every 100 years, as stated in the movie starring Gene Kelley and Van Johnson. RCB

I know about your Loudoun Breckenridge line. You and I have shared information just weeks ago, or don't you recall?

There have been more than one Alexander Breckenridge living in the USofA since it's conception. It does become confusing, doesn't it. I can tell you of a few more, too, but that information won't help you. There have been dozens and dozens of other Breckenridge Families or branches, as I call them, none of them related to each other, at least, not in this country. If there would be a connection between these various Breckenridges it would be back in Scotland, sometime before 1700. You can contact me directley at rbreck@charter.net if you need more help on your research. I am very busy, but I don't mind stopping once and a while to help some one out on their Breckenridge roots. I do have a ton of data on them in my basement archives.

Roger - these are the wrong ones too. The dates on the Alexander you mentioned don't match as well as their wives. Confusing isnt it? We aren't tied to the ones in OH - at least not through Alexander Sr or Jr.

Our Alexander Sr, was born 1800 - he was married to Elizabeth Lee Newton. Marriage 1823 when he was 23. One of his sons, Alexander Jr was born 1832 married 1858 to Susan B Wallace.

Going through old family records, there was a mention of Allegheny County, PA.

This Thread on the Breckenridges pertains to the Breckenridges of Fayette City, Pennsylvania, which is out in Western PA. Now I must clarafiy this statement. There were two totally different Breckenridge families residing at Fayette City, but the one in this thread on the Breckenridges is as follows:

Alexander “Sandy” Breckenridge
and
Richard Breckenridge
of
Fayette City, Pennsylvania

Alexander Blain Breckenridge “Sandy” born September 12, 1872 Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1900, Alexander was boarding at Charles O’Brien’s on Union Street, Fayette City, Pennsylvania, he was 24 years old. In 1910, Alexander Breckenridge, age 32, was married and residing in Fayette Co., PA.

Alexander was a son of Robert Breckenridge and Elizabeth Coats. Robert Breckenridge was born May 25, 1857 at Ardrossan, Aryshire, Scotland and Elizabeth was born August 17, 1855 at Delmellington, Aryshire, Scotland, a daughter of Alexander Coats and Elizabeth Gibb of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Robert was the son of David Breckenridge and Elizabeth Nicol. Robert Breckenridge and Elizabeth Coats were married December 21, 1873, Straiton, Aryshire, Scotland and their children were: Alexander Blain, Richard Gilchrist, William and Belle.

1. Alexander “Sandy” Breckenridge Scotland (Sep 12, 1872 - 1942) PA
Euphemia Marshall Scotland ( 1878 - 1958) PA
Married: ca. 1900/1901 in Ohio
Residence: Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania

2. Richard Breckenridge Scotland (Nov 5, 1874 - 1938) PA

3. Robert Breckenridge Scotland ( 1880 - Living 1900) OH

4.
I am not a Breckenridge researcher, but I can provide some information from Loudoun County, Virginia.

The first appearance of the surname Brackenridge/Breckenridge on the 1782-1850 Loudoun Co. Personal Property Tax Lists was Alexander P. Brackenridge in 1824. In 1843 his son Samuel appear with him (Samuel would have been 16 years old to appear on the lists) and the following year son Robert also appears. Alexander drops off the lists in 1845, with the two sons then residing with Thomas Birkby for a few years.

Loudoun Co. Marriages by Wertz lists:

Brackenridge, Samuel T. & Nancy A. Wildman. Joseph Wildman proves bride's age, wit.; "the male taken for granted". 12 Oct. 1852. Marriage Register.
Breckenridge, Samael S. & Nancy A. Wildman, in Lees burg. m. 21 Oct. 1852. Minister: George Adie (Prot. Epis).

There is no will or other estate account for any Brackenridge/Breckenridge in the Loudoun Co. Will Book up to 1880.

From my series, Index to Loudoun Co. I've just been in contact with her; she sent alot of material I haven't been through carefully yet.
Looking at your tree now, I see your earliest Breckenridge died in Loudoun Co. Can you find a will there? It might list siblings, which could help. You also mentioned Bucks County. Are you guessing Alex Sr was born there or is the connection earlier. Any other guesses as to time or location you can make? My Samuel Brackenridge d 1799 in Springfield Twp Bucks County and his four sons were Joseph b 1789, George W. b 1785, Thomas b 1790 m Priscilla Lake, and Robert b 1783.
Joseph and Robert were in Franklin Co. IN by 1820 census. I'll have to check probate to find their guardian.
I'll send you the info I got from Carol99 if you want to send me your email.

The info I have is that Alexendar Breckenridge was the father of Janet Breckenridge who married Andrew "Irish" Culbertson, their daughter Martha Culbertson married Gideon Millar, his son Gideon married Rachel Coe ( See Robert Coe, the Puritan) Their daughter Margaret Millar married my Jacob Staley ( See my book, "Some Descendants of Ulrich Stehley" (Also President Obama's ancestor)on his mother's side. Purportedly, Alexandar Breckenridge was married to Jane Preston, whose father was Archibald and mother Mary Stewart. The Stewart line (per the World Tree on here) goes back to the Plantagenets and all the kings there ever were, or so it states. Does anyone have any proof of this tree?

Joan Keller

Yes, Janet was born in Pa. in 1696, there is so very much background with the hundreds of royal lineages attached, I could not even hope to print them all out. Which line are you referring to? I do not have a clue as to whether or not
the information is valid on the background of Janet B Breckenridge, her father, Alexendar and his wife, Jane Preston. Though I have been working at genealogy for more than fifty years, I came by this extension rather recently aand at 77, not sure if I will live long enough to investigate it. Thanks for the input, appreciated. Joan

Some clarification - on our line:

Alexander Sr (b.1800) - first recorded in Loudodun, VA 1823 on tax lists then with two sons, Samuel and Robert. Alexander, Jr of our line was born later.

His fater was Samuel Breckenridge - dont have dates. But there was an inheritance record of land that Alexander Sr had from his father for serving in the last war with Gr Britain.

I know his father immigrated to PA at some point because Alexander Sr mentioned it later on. This was well before 1880.

Thank you very much for the information - I have our family tree of Breckenridges and still adding information to it - please check it out, it may be of some use hopefully. As well I have been adding photos from the family Bible as I can get them scanned. If you need anything information or something that I may be able to help out on, please ask.

thank you Roger - you are correct i find that many people on this website dont share family research information - the problem is the information i have researched from the family stops with the family line in Leesburg, with only a mention of the parents coming from PA. Nothing too specific to work on there.

You will most likely have to do the research yourself, unless you become extremely lucky and someone steps forward with the answer, but I don't think that will happen. RCB

I know this Breckenridge family or I should say that I am familiar with this family for I have been collecting info on them on and off for about 20 plus years. If I cam not mistaken, the first generation and possibly the second were coal miners in Western or Southwester PA. Wasn't there an Alexander Breckenridge connected with this family that was called "Sandy"?

If I am not mistaken, the name of the oldest Breckenridge that has been confirmed was Alexander Breckenridge, and I believe that one of the census records indicated that he was born in Pennsylvania. You might wish to start DIGGING on Hugh Brackenridge, the famous lawyer and was a Supremem Court Judge for the State of Pennsylvania. His line has not been thoroughly researched, although I have tried. He may have had a brother that has not been identified. I believe that Hugh's parents were John Brackenridge and Margaret Gardiner who came from Scotland and settled in York County, PA at an early date. Little is know of Hugh's siblings. I am sure that he had sisters and perhaps two or three brothers. I know something about two of those brothers: John and James.

There as also another David Brackenridge who settled in Chester County, PA at a very early date, who was captured by Indians and taken to the Wilds of Ohio during the French and Indian Wars. David Brackenridge probably came with his parents or siblings to Pennsylvania about 1720.

Not many folks have traced their roots back to 1720 in Pennsylvania. Many folks don't have the time or the inclination to do all the hard research at a historical library, but if you want to learn more about your Breckenridge line, you will most likely have to do the research yourself or hire it done, and hiring it done is extremely expensive, and, besides, you won't know if they have found your ancestors or someone elses.
There are two totally different branches of Breckenridges being discussed here. It is, like the old saying goes, were are mixing apples and oranges here. As we all know apples and oranges are different. Alexander Breckenridge settled in Orange County, Virginia about 1740. This was the beginning of the famous Breckenridges of Virginia and Kentucky, the vice-president's line, if you will. This thread that we are in and should be talking about concerns another Breckenridge family who immigranted to the USA, and I am guessing, in about 1880 and eventually settled in Western Pennsylvania.

The Alexander Breckenridge that you are referring to is from a differnt branch of Breckenridges or Brackenridges, but I know who or which people you are talking about.

The Breckenridges that are mentioned in this thread immigrated to American much later, like 100 years later.
