Parents of John Breckinridge b 1760 in Virginia

Can some one help, please, I'm confused? Who were the parents of John Breckinridge b 1760 Virginia d 1806 Kentucky married to Mary Hopkins Cabell. The book "The Cabells and Their Kin" states He was a son of Alexander Breckinridge, who emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1728, and afterwards
removed to Augusta County, Va., and settled near the present
site of Staunton. " His ancestors were originally from
Scotland."

What a surprise when this info regarding Mrs. John C.popped out, and I wasn't searching. John C. is a remote uncle. Our line had left for Ill. before the Civil War, so the drama of the Confederacy is not so close to us. Actually one of our family ran against Lincoln in his early political career. If you think you might be of that group I would like to share info. I am not good at navigating Ancestry so will try to make connection through the e-mail list or public profile. Please contact me.
I am particularly interested in finding the history of the Breckenridges who were surveyors probably in the Ohio area around 1800. I have been told their records are in some large genealogy libraries.
Pat1448

Robert H. Breckinrdige KY Confederate soldier

Seeking information on this soldier who died in an epidemic that swept the 8th KY regiment camp in Hopkinsville during the winter of 1861-62. He was buried in the Potter's Field section of the city cemetery, along with 225 others, but many were said to have been exhumed later and re-buried by relatives in family burial grounds in the hometowns.

Does any have any information on his family, hometown or final resting place?
My great grandfather James Breckenridge was named after the famous General James Breckenridge. He was born 1 Dec 1860 son of George A Lorren and Elizabrth Martha Robberson. John Lewis Caroll Lorren was his older brother. James Breckenridge Lorren married Jerry Ann Knighten and noone else. Julia Ann Pollard Knighten Lorren was his mother in law, she married (1969) John Lewis Carrol Lorren after her first husband Jeramiah Knighten was killed in Civil War Chancellorville May 3 1863. George A Lorren was already living in Carroll Co. Ga in 1841 and fought in 1st Ga Calvary. Kansas Red Legs or Jay Hawks were irregulars who were anti-slavery and pro-union so he would have been branded a traitor in the south not north.

Mrs. John C. Breckinridge

"Mrs. John C. Brecinridge, who was at the headquarters of her husband much of the time, owned "a handsome silk dress." She vividly remembered having worn it at a state dinner in Washington when her mate was vice-president of the United States. That dress, she decided aftger many months at the front, would make a spectacular flag.
Formally, presented to the Twentieth Tennessee Regiment, the flag of a Confederate general's wife was first exposed to gunfire at Hoover's Gap, Tennessee, in June 1863. Color bearer Ben Yeargin died that day and both Wallace Evans and Johnny Fly were wounded by gunfire directed at the eblem they carried. Three more color bearers were wounded at Chickamagua.
Finally, at Jonesboro, Georgia, every member of the color guard responsible for "the Mrs. Breckinridge flag" was killed or wounded. Wounded men not taken prisoner soon saw their general's wife headed toward them, her arms filled with lint and bandages."

I am not related to these people. I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Civil War Curiosities" by Webb Garrison. 1994.
Joyce

Breckinridge-Cabell connection

I've just started my search for ancestors and have gotten back about 6 generations on my father's side. His name is James Breckinridge Brownfield and there's a Cabell connection on the maternal side as several of the middle names are Cabell. The family story is that my father was named for John Cabell Breckinridge (vice president under Buchanan). I can't find much on the Cabell side of that family. Any ideas or information?

Thanks so much,
Jan Stephenson

Re: John Cabell Breckinridge

John Cabell Breckinridge's father was Joseph Cabell Breckinridge - they called him Cabell, and his mother was May Smith, d/o Rev. Samuel Stanhope Smith and Ann Witherspoon. Joseph Cabell Breckinridge's father was John Breckinridge (1760-1806), US Attorney Gen. under Pres. Jefferson, and his mother was Mary "Polly" Hopkins Cabell(1769-1858), d/o Joseph Cabell and Mary Hopkins. John Breckinridge was the son of Hon. Robert Breckenridge (b. abt. 1720) and his 2nd wife Letitia Preston - she was also his first cousin, being the d/o John Preston, (his mother Jane's brother) and Elizabeth Patton. (Robert's first wife was Sarah Poage). This judge of Botetourt Co., VA, Robert Breckenridge, was the son of Alexander Breckenridge who arrived in America 1728 and married Jane Preston, and had eight children. Hope I've been helpful.
-Sara

Jacob Pohlman Breckenridge was the child of Justin Breckenridge and Elizabeth Pohlman. Perhaps your Jacob was Elizabeths ( born March 17, 1803) brother? They lived in St. Lawrence Co., NY when Jacob P. Breckenridge was born.
but later emmigrated to Camden, Ohio. He died in Grafton, Lorrain co., Ohio. after 1900.

Good luck in your search.

Nancy

I am searching for my great grandfather. His name was John Breckinridge Calhoun Duvall or John Calhoun Breckinridge Duvall. He was born October 17, 1850. We believe that he was born in Kentucky but have no proof of that. The story goes that he and his brother Will (William?) were taken in and raised by a Dr. Black. John came to Kansas in 1876 where he settled for the rest of his life. I am hoping that Breckinridge or Calhoun was his mother's maiden name. If you have any records that might help me I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Anyone with Breckinridge roots in Virginia should take a look at this book. Reference is made to many differnet Breckinridges, maybe they are ancestors!

Jack,
Thanks for steering me to the right branch.
I have a copy of "The History of St Lawrence County, NY" and some of the census microfilmed pages. Jacob's family does not appear on the 1810 US Census because I now believe they were in Canada. I found other sources show that Elizabeth was born in Quebec, Canada. I think most of Jacob's children were born there. Do you know of a site or address for more Canadian info?
Looks like the children were probably: Henry J b: 1801; Elizabeth K b: 1803; Laura b: 180?; William J b: 1805 and George b: 1812.
William J(oseph)'s wife was probably Margaret Thurber m: 1828. I believe she was born in Sorel, Canada circa 1806. In the William Thurber ancestral tree; they also have a William Poleman Thurber. This would be a phonetic spelling for Pohlman.
I have not located information from descendants of Henry J. Pohlman; which were many. Henry's wife was Laura Pope (Pope Mills; maybe)
Thanks for your assistance. Your notes helped fill in the empty spaces and lead me in the right direction again.

Keep in touch.

Keith
I have a mystery on my hands. My late grandmother passed along family tree info that shows a John C. Breckenridge King as being the father of my grandfather Stephen King. Ellen Vancleve is listed as John's wife. Two things: It seems odd to have a name constructed in this manner. And now, I've just been told by a 2nd cousin that there was a rumor that John C. Breckenridge was a conferderate general, vice-president to Pres. Buchanan, who went into hiding after the Cival War because of his conferderate views....changing his name to King. Can anyone make a connection to this? E-mail me before I scream!

I am looking for information about my great grandmother Lucinda Breckinridge, who was married to William Milton Borror in Franklin or Pickaway County Ohio, about 1883.

I have found references to John S. Breckinridge and George W. Breckinridge.
George W. Breckinridge had a school teacher
George W. Preston in the mid 1800s. The Borrors came to Ohio in 1809 from Virginia and there are a lot of Breckinridge's and Prestons in Virginia as in-laws and cousins
some of the Breckinridge family migrated to
Kentucky and I did find a Lucy Breckinridge born about 1863 in Louisville, but I don't know if that's her or not. The Breckinridge plantation in KY was named Grove Hill, the town in Franklin County, Ohio where the Borror and Breckinridge families were and are very prominent was founded about 1840 and is named Grove City.

Chrystal and Louise, I am researching the name Frank/Fronk. There are 3 generations of John B. Frank/Fronk's and the most recent holds the middle name Breckinridge. Thus the possibility that the oldest member held the same middle name. J.B. Frank lived in Bracken, KY in the late 1700's and had 5 children: Peter b. Aug. 11, 1792, John b. May 21, 1790, Henry b. Aug. 11, 1792, George b. April 8, 1794 and Elizabeth b. April 14, 1796. 3 of the children married in Bracken and moved to Clermont co. Ohio. They are listed in the Clermont 1820 census. Elizabeth married John Bolender/Bolander my ggggrandfather. Don't know where the Breckinridge name came from but I am suspecting in was JB Frank's mother's maiden name. They possibly came from Pennsylvania and are of German background. Could there be a link here?
