Hopefully this note finds you. My James family lived next to the Bredins in Coshquin. Their house was within 50 feet of where your cousin's David Crockett house is. I was lucky enough to meet this extraordinary man on my visit to Coshquin in 2009. On his wall of his kitchen he had a painting of the James family farmhouse. The farmhouse was destroyed in the early 1970's. He also had leases that listed my family from the 1800's. My great great grandfather George James came to the U.S. around 1853 with his brother Robert. The farm was then run by their brother Rankin James. Please let me know if you have information about the James family.
Thank you,
Mike James

BREDIN Surname DNA Project

A DNA project has been launched for the Bredin surname, along with any variations such as Breeden, Breeding, Braden, etc. The project uses testing on the male Y chromosome which is passed directly down the paternal line from father to son making it ideal for investigating surname lineages. The testing can be used to uncover, prove, or disprove connections between various Bredin lines and to also give clues about the deeper origins of the lineages.

Project participation is open to any direct paternal-line male Bredin descendant - i.e., a male whose last name is Bredin (or any variation of the surname) or a male whose biological paternal-line ancestry goes back to a Bredin but whose last name was changed at some point, such as due to adoption. Even if you are not a direct paternal-line male Bredin descendant, you can join the project by sponsoring the testing of a Bredin male from your immediate or extended family, such as a brother, son, father, uncle, male cousin, distant male cousin, etc.

Feel free to visit the Braden-Bredin project website for more details:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/braden/

Also, if you are a Bredin that has already had Y-DNA testing done at Family Tree DNA, you can log into your account and use the Join Projects link to join the Braden-Breeden project.

Mike
Project Administrator
Braden-Breeden DNA Project
Roger, Thanks for the info. What I'm wondering is if your Walter died during WW2 in Shanghai? I've subsequently found that Walter's father was Andrew Bredin, and that both were born in Ballymahon, Co.Longford, Ireland.
If any of this matches with your information, do let me know. We do know that Walter had a brother, but no names yet.
Cheers,
- Celia

Cavan county Ireland, John BREDIN and James BREDIN...wills circa 1890

Have obtained a microfilm of Cavan county Wills at the local Family History Center Wills late 1800s as I was looking for COOTE / COOTES names. None were here, but another surname of interest is BREDEN / BRADEN / BRADDEN. It always catches my eye and has done so again in the Indexes.

Here are two wills majorly paraphrased as the wording is not of genealogical importance, its the names contained in it which are the best parts. Not many names were in them, but even the lack of such [siblings or children] can be helpful. This spelling was BREDIN for both however there is no specific indication these 2 families were related.

===============================
James BREDIN
James BREDIN left his Last Will and Testament written 5 June, 1885 in Cavan county, Ireland in Baillieborough. He left all his worldly posessions [130 Pounds in the Bank of Ireland], cattle and stock and chattels, land with house to his wife, Betsy BREDIN [maiden name not given]. At the death of Betsy, he stated his possessions should go to a nephew, John BREDIN residing in Marrahill? He then signed the document and appointed Simon BREDIN of Marrahill? and John FOSTER of Garrymoor? as Executors of the Will.

A notation after the handwritten entry was completed referred to 'the personal estate and effects of the said deceased' was granted by court on 20 July, 1886 to Betsy BREDIN of Corduff in 'said county' [as the lawful widow] which hopefully means Cavan county as no other county is mentioned.

===============================
Joseph BREDIN
Joseph BREDIN wrote his Last Will and Testament on 3 March, 1891 in Cavan county, Ireland in Baillieborough. His residence was noted as Innisconnell in the County of Cavan, he was a Farmer. He bequeathed all his real and personal estate to his wife, Martha BREDIN [no maiden name given] as the sole Executor. There were no other names listed to receive property, any sort of gift or inheritance. The will was signed in the presence of the Solicitor in Cavan, James E. HARTLEY. Final notation was 'Probate granted 15th March 1895".

===============================

This post will also be sent to the BRADEN surname List at Rootsweb [there is no BREDIN List]and the Cavan county Mailing List. To obtain a copy of either of these one page handwritten entries in the Will Book, write to me, Meg Greenwood at scotquester@bartnet.net and I'll send it as a JPG.

HI, nice to meet you. I looked thru my Coshquin/Ezekiel material and find no mention of last name James, just a lot of first names James Bredin. I have hardly done any Griffiths research so far, but I just attended a seminar on Griffiths where they had 4 web sites. Two were not Northern Ireland, one, www.logainm.ie/ was a finder for administrative jurisdictions, one was an Article ‘Is there more in Griffiths Valuation than just names’ by James R. Reilly. You can find it at Leitrim-Roscommon site. http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/more_to_griffiths.... . Highly recommended, but I have not read it. Other tips I recall are, Irish acres don’t equal English acres. In 1850s Ireland was under English rule, so at Family Hist Center look for 'British'. Griffith's numbers are not necessarily next to each other. As yours shows a James as 1b, and Wiley at 1a, they might be related somehow. 1a might be the primary house on the land.

However, if you are trying to locate your James property as shown in Griffiths, I can tell you my experience of yesterday. I used the ‘askaboutireland..griffith’ site, which is fantastic, to find Ezekiel’s plot, I think. Did you scan in just west of modern day Ben View Estates next to Coshquin Road, and find the red # 1 lot? I’m assuming the red numbers are the Griffiths lot/map reference numbers. If so, the #2 seems to fit the general description I have of the Ezekiel Bredin homestead, west of modern day Ben View Estates, and east of the UK-Irish border. What doesn’t seem to fit is the lane to ‘The Old Bredin Homestead’ was reported to be right on the ‘United Kingdom-Ireland’ boundary. I don’t see lot 2 having much on the boundary. Does the #1 lot fit where you know James property to be? Good luck, if I can answer any Q, ask.

Hi Todd,
According to Griffith's Valuation my G3 Grandfather, Robert James, lived next to Ezekiel Bredin in Coshquin. Are there any mention of the James family in your research?

Here is a wonderful new resource online at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

I will be in Coshquin the first week of Nov. 2009.

Mike James
San Diego

I just did a dna test to see if I can pushstrat my stalled Bredin line back in Ireland. If you are a male Bredin and theres no known adoptions on your line you can test and see if we have the same ancestry going way back. The tests are unfortunatly not cheap but they can tell you alot. If you are a Bredin and are interested in testing please get a hold of me and we can exchange info. My tests were done at www.genebase.com but there are many others too.
I tested and found a line related by a Robert J Bredin of Flat Rock NC. Unfortunatly his emails were all defunct. His line traces to a Samuel Bredin 1750-1826. Im not sure but it mentions a James b 1795 and his son John of Enniskillen. The McBride name seems to test rather close DNA wise too

This is a hard time to find anything in Ireland. I have a vast collection of data from here and there and though there are a few maybes I dont see anything that connects right now. My own Bredin family hailed from that area as well in the late 1800s and Ive been looking for anything on them for some 15 years now.
I would be happy to converse with you via email and house some of your older data if you would be kind enugh to share it with me?
Marshall, Moor, Bredin

In 1767, William Marshall and wife Elizabeth with children Robert, Jannet, Mary, and Jane arrive in Charleston on the ship Earl of Donegal. They were Protestants from Ireland taking advantage of the SC Act of 1761. In 1768, Izrael Moor(e) and wife Nancy with children William, Izrael, Richard, John, Elizabeth, Jane, Christian, Ann, and Elnor arrive also in Charleston on the Brigatine Chichester. They were also protestants from Ireland coming under the same Act of 1761. These 2 families go from Charleston to the Camden District. They possibly new each other in Ireland, but after arriving Robert Marshal and Christian Moore marry ca 1774. Robert has a plat of land (100) acres located in Camden District on Singletons creek in 1788 and is on the 1790 Camden district census. Izrael Moore dies ca 1782 leaving a will in Camden district, also on Singletons creek in which he names Israel Moor, Samuel Moor, Elizabeth Kimbal, Jane M. McCullough, Christian Marshall, Agnes Beard, Elinor Moor, James Bredin and Mary Bredin. I know that Robert Marshall and wife Christian(na) move some time after 1790 to Sumner County, TN where he dies and leaves a will. This will is signed in 1803, a codicil is added and dated January 1804 and the estate is inventoried in June 1804. Mentioned in the will is his land on Singletons Creek in SC. Two of his witnesses are Isral Moore and William Moore- presumed to be brothers-in-law. The widow and some of her children then leave TN for Christian County, KY. I am looking for other serious researchers also working these or connected lines. I would like to know more of their time in SC, what were their activities during the revolutionary war, and I would also like to pursue this family back to Ireland. Thanks for any help. Will work with and share further information.

Hello Edward,
I did get your email after your message board prompt. Sorry for the delay in replying.Thank you for answering all of my questions.The 3 or 4 brothers emigrating to various places does puzzle me though.These would have been my Dad's Great Uncles and you would have imagined he would have heard about them.I wonder if it could be other Bredin cousins. When we were in Florida in 1989, I did see a Bradentown or Bradenton on the map.It is a co-incidence that your friend visited Cookstown, where I live at present.I am looking forward to seeing the information you have gathered.I am going to do some more research at The Central Library, Londonderry, to see if I can find out anything further. We all look forward to seeing you and your wife next Spring.Will be in contact. Bye for now. Lynne.

Hi Lynne,
We just received your packet - what a treasure trove! Thank you, and to your Dad for laboring on that tree. I love the photos. Lydia does seem to have a bun in the oven, doesn't she? Either that or she had a terrible fashion sense.

Now if we could just get past the wall to see the elder Edward Bredin's ancestors - for example, at what point the various Bredin lines connect back to one (?) source! But for now, there's plenty of trivia there to occupy me.

By the way, we visited N. Ireland year before last, and spent a delightful week in Carnlough near Belfast. We hope to return to the Derry area, the old homestead.

Best wishes
SB

Adelaide Foster on 9 Nov. 1892. They had two children, named Edward Montgomery Bredin and Anna Foster Bredin.
Edward M. Bredin married Elizabeth Matthews, not sure of the date. They had 3 children named Edward Montgomery Bredin JR. Robert Matthews Bredin, and Elizabeth Ann Bredin.
Please respond if you have any info prior to 1892.
Thank you
ELB

Hello Lynne,
Great information, thank you so much!

As far as the photo of "Ly" goes, "MB" certainly could be Margaret Bredin Bentley. It sounds like the picture must be of Lydia Bell Bredin (nee Blackmer, 1857 NY-1916 Michigan), who, as far as I can determine, was Robert Bredin's second wife after Susanna Bentley Bredin died of consumption. Lydia and Robert had one child together, as far as I know: Robert Jr., b. 1875 Michigan, d.?
Susanna Bentley Bredin was the mother of Freddie (b. 1876 in Michigan, d.?) who married a Laura A.
I have no photos of any of the Bredins, alas.

Here's what else I have from my end:

I show William and Sarah Shaw Bredin's children as Margaret and Robert, plus:
*  Ezekiel William (b. 1864, Londonderry, d. 1947 Detroit), married Lena (1867-1858) (he would have been born just as they left for America);
*  Jane b. 1859 Londonderry, d. ?, m. George Rohd;
*  Mary Bredin b. 1869 Detroit, d.?

If Joyce was another sister she doesn’t appear on the Detroit census or ship transcript. She only would have been 9 when they emigrated, perhaps she died as a child?

I show that William M. Bredin's siblings incluided :
*  Jane Bredin b. 1820
*  Margaret Bredin b. 1825
*  Elizabeth Bredin b. 1829

I would love to have a copy of the Bredin tree and would be more than happy to reimburse you for postage.

Best wishes
Sean
seanbentley37@hotmail.com

Hello Sean,
Could this photo I refer to be of your Great Aunt Susanna??!!!!!! Do you have any photos we could compare? The lady in the photo looks like she is expecting.Just a thought but do you suppose if she was susanna-who died aged 38yrs and 11 months she could have died during childbirth and the two small stones Todd refers to , could be babies who died too.When I refer to Todd Bredin's info re Bredins in Michigan-he mentions a Lydia.THe funny thing is, the wording on the back of the photo that begins Ly-we guessed to be Lydia, before we knew there was a Lydia, but we weren't sure.I wondered -as Lydia was born in 1856 and Joyce Elizabeth was born in 1856- could Lydia be a pet form of Elizabeth as in Libby etc.Joyce Eliz was a sister to Margaret and Robert Bredin.Hope to hear from you soon. Lynne.
