Hi! I'm so excited to hear from members of the Bredys from Austria. Please forgive me for not replying right away; I am away from home spending time in a hospital with my mother, who is terminally ill. Not sure when I will return home, but i look forward to comparing notes as i'm sure there is a connection to be discovered. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Lisa Hanson Semple
Rocklin, CA (near Sacramento)

I hope you're still checking this message board from time to time. My father, Dave Bredy, is the youngest of twelve children born to Carl and Louise (Schonert) Bredy in Bismarck, North Dakota. I think I may be a link to the extended family you're searching for!

My dad was only 15 months old when his father died, so most of what I know of our family's history came from his older sisters. I didn't hear much about Carl's siblings, but my aunts did say that one of the brothers stayed behind when the family came to the United States. The story I remember -- but mind you, I was a little girl hearing this story -- was that he became the right-hand man to the Czar. I have never found anything to substantiate this . . . .

I have not done much research into my family history, but it's definitely on my "bucket list." I'll be curious to see if you pick up this message.

All the best,

Cindy Bredy
Seattle, WA

We are not close relatives, but have things in common. Our Bredy's came from Austria, parents Frank and Karoline Bredy.
In California we have Jacob Bredy and family. My grandpa was Jacobs brother. Good to hear from you. Bredy is not a common name. Probably related back in Austria.

Hi,
We are Bredy's in California. Our Grandfather was John (Johann) Bredy. His siblings were Louise Bredy Lenkert, Karl Bredy, and a brother that stayed in Austria, Gustav Adolf Bredy. Their parents were Nickolaus & Katherina Bredy from Austria that lived in North Dakota when they arrived in the USA.

Danielle, am I correct in reading that you descend from Dr. Jean Bredy of Louisiana? I think there might be three of us on this board now. How do you descend? I descend from his son Philip who married Catherine Keller.[Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have been remiss in checking the boards.]
Sandy Boyes

It is so nice to meet another descendant from Dr. Jean Bredy!! I descend from his son Philip who married Catherine Keller. How do you descend? Also, I have never been able to pin down where the Bredys came from originally, but Alsace does not surprise me because the Kellers were from Alsace as were the Achtziger/Quatrevingt who also married into the Bredy line. Could I ask where you found that bit of information? [Sorry it took me so long to respond. I have been remiss in checking the boards.]

Hi Danielle,

Thanks for your message, but the Bredy family that Sandy and I belong to are not related to the Louisiana Bredys. Ours came from the Galicia area of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire (Lemberg-area, now Ukraine), and first entered the U.S. around 1900. To the best of our knowledge, there were no doctors...but a judge, a pastor, a weaver, and many many carpenters. Best of luck to you!

Lisa

Hi! It would seem to me that you and I are of the same family line. I too am a descendant of the Bredy family that moved from Maryland to Louisiana in the late 1700's. Additionally "my" Bredy that moved to Louisiana was also a doctor. I don't have my notes in front of me from the searching I did many years ago, but going from memory my descendant was Jon Bredy (aka Jean Baptiste Bredy). He was a doctor and I believe he was declared deceased in 1803, after he disappeared and was never found. Would this correlate to the history you have found?

From memory I do recall one of the son's was Philip Bredy (Philippe). From what I could find he was married in Maryland, and shortly thereafter moved to La with Jean. I believe there was also a brother named Celestin (though I may be getting my generations mixed together).

From what I could find, it seems my Bredys originated in Alsace, France. Which was also part of Germany at one point of time in history.

Just curious to see if there is a connection :)

Sandy, any information you have would be so exciting! My relatives were also given a hard time here in L.A. for being German, and my grandmother had to learn English very quickly in kindergarten so that people wouldn't throw things at her! I'll send you some specific, helpful details and links separately to assist in your research. If this is your family, I also have many photos. I'm in the middle of a multi-year project doing custom digital scans and repair of over 100 years of photos. Fortunately, a love of photography is something that several ancestors, and I, have shared. They left a great record of themselves and what their lives were like.

Lisa

Hello! My great-grandfather's name was Jacob (Jakob) Michael Bredy. He came from the Baden-Baden area of Germany through Ellis Island in 1901, then went directly to St. Paul, MN. I believe he travelled with Karl Bredy (brother?). About two years later, he married Caroline (Karoline) Hertz or Hartz, also from Germany. By 1905, they had moved to L.A., where they had my grandmother Rose (Rosine) C. Bredy, and Carl Jacob and Elizabeth Marie. There was some Brady spelling at times. I have little or no knowledge of the ancestors outside of California, but there must be many, esp. in MN. Could there be a connection? I'm just beginning my search.

Hello there! Yes, there are very few of us around. My family came from Germany. Grandpa did not like to talk about Germany as he came over during the turn of the century and it was not popular to be German. He and his brother first came to Minnesota. Half brothers went to California and changed the spelling of their name to Brady. The story goes that grandpa's father or grandfather etc. came from Ireland and was given land in Germany for being in the German Army. They changed the spelling to be the German way -Bredy when they settled in Germany. Do write again. I am in Indianapolis. Sandy
