If this Frank's wife was Thelma Murphy, then William Tom was not an only child. Frank and Thelma grew up in New Orleans where they married in 1920 and had a daughter Audrey in 1923
before they moved to Houston, TX.

I wonder if my family is a part of your family. My Father's name is William Tom Breedlove. His father's name was Frank. He grew up in Texas also. His mother lived in Bay Town before her death. He's in his 80's. He was an only child. Anything sound familiar?

Idella Tennessee "Tennie" was the first of 11 children of Andrew Martin Breedlove and his 2nd wife Ruefina Doyle. The
male Breedlove line behind Tennnie is white so any Indian blood came from their wives.

Just to correct a few facts, Pauline's first name is Sarah; her full name is Sarah Pauline Partin, she has just always gone by her middle name. I was named after her (I am her great niece). Tennie and George did have a daughter who died in infancy, but her name was Juanita (not certain of spelling), not Sarah. The other two names mentioned are correct, Tennie and George had two sons named Billy Gene and Bobby Austin.

Hi Bransome....

My name is Joseph Baker and Richard Breedlove (1768-1840) and his wife Mildred Watts(1770-1789) were my 4th Great Uncle and Aunt. My direct line goes to his father Thomas Breedlove(1730-1795) and his wife Sarah Broaddus (1732-1785). So it would appear that our two families have common ties. I would love to talk to you move about this, which part of the country do you live in at present. Please drop me a line at wasserschloss@yahoo.com

According to my research all folks with the Breedlove name go back to Charles Breedlove (1688-1754). As far as can be determined Charles was the first person to ever have used the name Breedlove and it is most likely that he made the name up. There are a number of theories about this I would be happy to talk to you about...
Joseph Baker

There are several Breedloves in the United States, both African American and white. I descend from the African American Breedloves. My great-great-grandfather was Lewis Breedlove who married Dicy Moten Breedlove and lived in Danville, Virginia. Reportedly, they were former slaves of Joe Reynolds of Danville, Virginia and sold to Richard Breedlove of Danville, Virginia. My great-grandmother, America Breedlove married Jack Griggs. In the early 1900s they left the Danville area and moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Descendants of Lewis and Dicy still live in the Danville, Brosville, Virginia area and have intermarried with the Adams, Tarpley, Wilson, Waller, Jefferson, etc., all African American families in Danville. One, of Lewis's grandsons had about 12 children, most of them sons, who carried the Breedlove surname. Richard Breedlove, the white slave owner and his wife, Mildred, lived in or near Danville, virginia and info on that family can be found at the Danville Public Library.
As far as the name being native American. I don't think so. The Breedlove name was in the United States a long time ago. I think I read somewhere that it means "by the river." Most info I have seen seems to suggest or suggests that it is either of Welsh or English origin.

The only problem with this is that there never was a James
Breedlove born c1655. There are NO records before 1708 when
Charles Breedlove was a witness to a relinquishment of dower
rights, of anyone by the name of Breedlove ANYWHERE in the
world. The assumption of parents for Charles being James and Kindness Breedlove is purely without basis in fact or evidence. The family legend passed down is that Charles made
up the name to avoid persecution. It is my opinion that he
was part of the settlement in Essex of Huguenots who were
escaping from France and England. Whether it is coincidental or not there were also families of Manlove and Pricklove that also appear for the first time in Essex c1700
that have no record of those surnames prior to that. I know
the Manloves were associated with my Breedlove line into the 1900's.
My tie to the Breedlove name goes all the way back colonial Virginia in 1655 to a Charles Breedlove who was married to a woman named Kindness with an unknown family name.

I am quite sure of my relationship to the Breedlove name since it goes back to my great grandmother Anna Julia Breedlove who was born in 1859 in Missouri. Her father was a William S. Breedlove who was born in 15 October 1814 in Virginia and his father was a Beverly Breedlove born in 1782 in Virginia as well. From there the chain is John Breedlove born 1752 in Virginia, to Thomas Breedlove born in 1730 in Virginia, to Charles Breedlove in 1688 in Virginia to James Breedlove in 1655.

I can confirm my relationship to this chain through two DNA matches one to John Breedlove and his wife Margaret Vawter, and the other to William S Breedlove and his wife Delina V Benton.

It is my opinion based both on this chain and on my own DNA findings that find no Native American dna in my dna links that the Breedlove family line did not originate from any Native American Line.

It is my guess that it is either of English, Scottish, or Irish origins. This is based on the findings of my own DNA sample.

I have also heard that the name Breedlove may have been made up by the first Breedlove in the colonies perhaps even by James Breedlove born 1655 or his father... who is unknown at this time.

She named her
first son after three brothers who had middle name of Bolling (all lived in Tuskegee)and her second son after her father Samuel. What is it you are looking for?

My guess is that Martha Powell Webb remarried to Brown Breedlove, who died two years after her in Los Angeles. He
lived a few doors down from the Powells in 1930. He was 12
years younger than Martha, only ten years old in 1930, so
any marriage would have been in the late 1930's or early
1940's.

This Martha Breedlove is shown on the 1910, 1920 and 1930
censuses of Caddo Parish, LA, as the daughter of Jesse Powell and Mary (Grant). In 1930 Martha is living with her parents as a widow with her daughters Gustaviour and Montiel Webb. If
Martha is the one who died in San Francisco in 1973 she must
have remarried to an unknown Breedlove, perhaps from the
Breedlove family that lived a few doors down from the Powells
in Caddo.

Dear Missugawolf,
In case you ever check this message board I just want to share a little bit with you in hopes that you'll find some closure.
Martha Breedlove is also my great grandmother. Montiel is my grandmother as well. That would make us 1st cousins.

I'll name Montiel's children. ("momma", is what EVERYBODY called her). As far as I'm aware, she had 12 children. To follow is a list of her children which would be your aunts and uncles. All of our aunts and uncles had children with the exeption of Lester (deceased).

You have so many cousins. I can't name them all because unfortunatly, some have been split from the family, some have grown up in foster care, some are in prison, some have just moved on with their lives and have chosen not to look back. Myself being one of them. There is simply a lot of pain.

I hope that this information helps you on your voyage of self discovery. I'm sure you have much unresolved pain.
Just know that you have been created in the image of God.

If you havn't already please allow our Lord Jesus Christ to come into your heart, and be your Lord and Savior. HE will set you free and give you all the closure you need to move forward.

We are all scattered around the globe. However the love and loyalty still lives through momma's legacy.

Several of your cousin's and family members are on facebook.
I'm sorry that I don't know Mary Janes's last name. It could possibly be Coleman.

I'm pretty sure that one of the siblings on this list is your mom or dad.

Peace, blessings, hugs & much love,
Becauseicare

ps. this list is NOT in age order & some names may be misspelled.

Mary Jane (deceased)
Brenda Kelly (deceased)
Frank Kelly Jr. (deceased)
Ricky Kelly
Chris Jones
Denise "Dorothy" Jones
Lester Jones (deceased)
La Saundra "Sandy" Jones
Raven Jones (deceased)
Stephen Jones
Calvin Lincoln
Katrina Lincoln

Vivian Breedlove Knight 1914-2011 Tenn, Ky, Ohio

KNIGHT Vivian Breedlove Knight, age 97, passed peacefully, at her home, on October 13, 2011. Born August 26, 1914 in Dandridge, Tennessee to the late Robert and Minnie Breedlove.

At an early age, her father moved the family to Lynch, Kentucky to take a job as a coal miner and to avail his children of the educational opportunity in the new location. Lynch Independent Colored School offered 12 grades of grammar and high school, which was not available in rural Tennessee.
Vivian received her grammar diploma and was the high school valedictorian.
Vivian continued her education and graduated from Knoxville College in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Your query is too vague for anyone to discern which Martha
Breedlove you are talking about or if Breedlove was even her maiden name. I have identified 82 different Martha Breedlove's in my database. If you expect any replies, it would be helpful to include some dates and places in your
query and names of parents or spouses.

That will be exciting to see! I am actually about to start sending messages to see if I can find anyone who has a picture of Lucy Breedlove (b. 1881?, m. Martin Riley Vincent). I am very interested in seeing her lineage. Thank you for the information! I will send Joni Breedlove an email asking her if she is still offering the transcript. And I hope to know when you finish your project!

Is there a Breedlove Family website anywhere?

Re: Hope Perry Breedlove book

The manuscript, it was not a printed and bound book, was tied together with shoestring. I lent the copy I got from Hope to a relative and it was never returned. I then order the film from LDS and copied the entire manuscript which included an index which was not included in the original but done by another Breedlove researcher. Joni Breedlove jledb@bellatlantic.net, had transcribed the entire manuscript to disk and offered it to others on the Breedlove Mailing List back in 2000 for $15 plus another $15 for the index. I do not know if she still has this available or if the email address is still good. If memory serves me correctly the original manuscript has about 290 pages. I do have an updated manuscript from Hope that has
over 900 pages that he made only for his 3 children. Now that I am retired, I had planned to scan the pages into the computer and copy it to disks but I now see that it will take a DVD to hold it all rather than a CD. That's just as well as my Breedlove database of descendants of Charles Breedlove (30,000+) takes up another 900 pages before asking for photos to include, so I may be able to fit them both on one DVD. This is still in progress but it will take a few years to work out the indexing of both works, especially after inserting photos in the database report that is already indexed.

The original manuscript is not a registered report following any one line of Breedlove's (except for Hope's in
Georgia) but groups the records found by states that the different lines were living in.

Tom King
Breedlove Mailing List/Message Board Administrator
