Hi Christine,
On a 6/5/'06 posting of yours, you wondered how many Breen household lived in the Glencar - Killarney aria of Co. Kerry. The 1901 census for Co Kerry is now on line, see the Irish National Archives web site. Griffith's Valuation of c 1852, also on line, shows the Breen family heads for that year. My ancestors were from the townland of Derrynagree, Kilcrohane civil parish, which is a few miles south from Glencar.
Pat Breen
Hi.You probably know that the 1911 census returns for Co. Kerry are now available on line (on The Irish National Archives web site). I have the Co. Kerry Breen 1901 census return. I would be glad to look them up, if you think that it might be of any help. Griffith's Valuation also available on line only gives the name of the head person in each household but it is usefull in that it establishes in which townlands Breen families resided then(1847).
This summer,I visited Glencar for the very first time. My own ancestors were in Derrynagree townland near Sneem.
Pat Breen dob 1934

Hi pat,
I found the boithrin site a while back, and signed in there, hoping to find more re your breen connections there ,so i am aware of the history[excellent site BTW]
when my uncle[jeremiah] died two years ago we found some papers which opened up our breen history[in dublin anyhow]
a 3rd cousin [Thaddeus]had written up most of the breen lines[except ours]we both descend from john[1839-1899]
We have both tested at Ftdna and have matched 67-3,which
is about right for 3rd cousins[ie.3 gen.3mutations]I wil check with thady, but i think that no other detail [except obit in evening herald]survives.jeremiah was substituted
for Dermot,or Diarmuid,as the english had outlawed the use of
Irish names[Thaddeus =timothy also]another name [pattern]seems to include Patrick [Francis]which was one of john's also my father [d1985][P.F.Joseph]to denote differing generations {perhaps?]under the tradition of naming this would hint at a Patrick as being a [poss.]grandfather to the Patrick[ie.son of john]and therefore father to jer'h b.1818,I may be taking liberties here but not too much [I hope]by asking that you contact me via e-m at breen.terence AT yahoo.ie,and we can compare/confer further, and I would ask Loraine to please do likewise,if it suits, best regards, terence.

Hi Loraine,
My Breens migrated from kerry in early 1800s
the only detail we have is as follows mrs
Mary breen[1776] [husband u/k]had one known son Jeremiah[born 1818]migrated to dublin c.1830m.catherine1834
his daughter[m.Mark carolan] returned to tralee in latter 1800s this was significant as m.carolan was of co.cavan!and
established a tailors shop there, she had brothers
named Michael and John,sisters kate,Eliza,bridget.Mary
breen died in the famine 1847,two years later Jeremiah
succumbed to cholera then rampant in dublin, both buried in glasnevin cemetery.when John breen[my line] died [1899]his obituary included reference to Poss. relatives in Usa +Aus.as Mary/jeremiah died so close to each other origins
of the family died with them, that they were from kerry
we are quite sure, and[prob.] in the north of the county,
after many years of research I have only found one tailoring family in Kerry,[ballyconry]Tralee records search[es]uncovered zero, tailoring tradition continued[dublin] to my grandads time d.1960.best regards Terence.

Christine,
thanks for info and reply,I didnt mean to infer
that my breens were directly related to yours, but
the trade of tailoring would "traditionally" follow
in branches of families of certain areas,I have come
across posts re breens in N.Y.who were tailors [both m/f]and who emigrated prior to the famine from kerry,[their first names also tallied with my lines]also some of yours.this naming "pattern" is really important,I have just returned from a trip there and spoke with some of the remaining relatives/breens in the area, for privacy I will say no more, but contact me direct if you prefer, best of luck with your search too,Terence.

To all those breen's out there who have searched in vain for that elusive ancestor in ireland,I would urge you to consider the option of testing a male breen descendant
[thats Y-dna]at worldfamilies.net byrne project which has
several breen testees from various counties in Ireland.Being
born and reared here in ireland was/is of no other benefit except for access to library and archives material, which is[of course]scarce in quantity esp.prior to famine years,so having met the proverbial "brick wall" I ventured to test at the above project, and found close connections therein,i believe it is the best way to find common ancestry,if your
paper trail has yielded nothing further.T.Breen.

Hi there,

I am at the start of my Breen family research. I am trying to find out where in Ireland my Breens are from. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Breen emigrated from Mountrath, Co. Laois, to Waterbury, Connecticut in 1899. She and her brother, Patrick, boarded for a while with their sister, Katie, who was already settled there with her husband, Patrick Coleman. Also boarding there was Edward Kirwan, who Elizabeth married in 1900. Soon after this they returned to Ireland. I found all these people together on the U.S. census of 1900.
I am wondering if there would be a connection with your Breens in Waterbury, as they all seemed to emigrate at the same time to the same town. Also, though Elizabeth had been living in Co. Laois, I suspect she was born in a different county, and am trying to find out where the Breens came from before this.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Niamh Blake in Dublin

"just gets curiouser and curiouser"
I certainly agree with that. We are making great progress in sorting this all out via DNA testing, but we still have a long ways to go. When I started the Byrne/Burns/Beirne project I thought there might be three or four origins of those surnames, but we already have identified over a dozen, and there are many areas of Ireland as yet unsampled. Breen may be similar.

Married Mary Ann Fernan whose parents also came from Ireland. My mother said that Thomas Maurice Breen was a carpenter, and after moving to the US, I know that he was the groundskeeper at Cornel University in Ithaca.

Hi Lorraine, I wish I knew more about my great grandfather, Michael Breen. What I do know is that he married Johanna Quilter from Ballyconry in 1899. They immigrated to Waterbury, CT in the same year and had five children, my grandmother Mary Breen being the oldest. While researching the Quilters I noticed that a Breen family lived on the same street, just a few doors down. I'm only guessing but since there was a Breen family living so close to the Quilters, I believe that my grandparents were neighbors and that Breen family is related to my grandfather somehow. I'm going to Ireland next week and hopefully will have a little time to investigate. I'll get back to you if I get any new answers. Pat

Hi, I was wondering, in the obituary, did they mention where in the US the relatives came from. My Michael Breen, born April 15th, 1877, lived and worked in Waterbury Connecticut until he died in 1951. Michael named his elder son Jeremiah. That seems to be a very common Breen name, especially in the Ballyconry area. I'm going to Ireland next week and plan to stop in that area to research my Quilter relatives. Johanna Quilter married Michael Breen in 1899 and immigrated the same year from Ballyconry. Hopefully I'll find some new info when I'm there and if so, I'll write and share it. Pat

My g-grandfather Patrick Breen born, in 1828, left Ireland in the early 1850's. I do not know his county of origin in the old country, though my great aunt believes is was c.Kerry or c. Cork. Patrick's death certificate lists his fathers name as Patrick and he was born in 1805. No mothers name.

He was married to Mary Hannon (either before or after emigration) and their first child was born in New York in 1854. Seven other children were born in Lycoming , Pennsylvania.
He was a farmer/ laborer. The whole family moved to Kansas City in the 1880's.
If this rings any bells for anyone....please let me know.
Pat Breen
Hi There,

My grandfather was James Breen and a tailor he was born in Ballyconry and I believe his father Patrick Breen may also have been a tailor. Perhaps you could let me know how you think this relates to your/our family.

Best Wishes

Loraine

Hi Terence,

Thanks for all that information while I have only recently started to look back at my Breens they were still in Ballyconry until the 1911 census so that means they are not the same as your family. My great gandfather was Patrick Breen who had 7 children my grandfather James Breen was a tailor and that is why I thought there may be a connection. 2 possibly three of the brothers had to leave Ballyconry as they were involved with the IRA and I know that one ended up in Australia but not sure about the other two. Good luck with the rest of your search.

Loraine

Hi Pat Thanks for your message my Breens were in Ballyconry in 1911 and two if not three of the brothers left Ireland in the early 1900's as they were involved with the IRA. I believe one went to America, one Australia and I do not know the destination of the third. Hope you have a great time in Ireland.

Best Wishes

Loraine
