Keith

There are a lot of possibilities here but the first step is to locate other male descendants of Timothy Brees from other sons and have them tested to see if the single yDNA test is conclusive or simply, as you note, possibly an adopted child. Do you know any Brees male descendants in your line that can be tested? If you I can put you in touch with Alice Clark who is the administrator of the Brees Surname yDNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

Chris

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the very interesting information. It certainly raises a lot of questions. Since Timothy Brees' wife was a descendent of Samuel Doty, there is always the possibility they adopted a male child from her side of the family, and the break happened in Jesse's generation. Confirming that the yDNA of Jesse's line matches that of his male siblings will be a crucial step.

Thanks for your hard work on this.

Keith

Timothy Brees yDNA

For all of those researching the ancestry of Timothy Brees, Revolutionary soldier from New Jersey, but have hit a brick wall in locating his parents, there is knew information from yDNA testing that may help change the course of research. Recently I had a male descendant of Timothy Brees though his son Jesse Brees tested for yDNA markers. Since this test looks at the male Y chromosome, it looks at DNA passed down from father to son over generations. The results of this test showed that the 67 markers tested did not match closely with any of the Brees males currently tested including descendants of Moses and John Brees of Morris County, NJ and Ohio who were thought to be close relatives of Timothy’s. In fact Timothy’s yDNA did not match at all. In comparing to other surname groups, I was able to determine there was a match to the Doty family and not just to any Doty family but because of a marker specific to one line, it showed that Timothy’s male ancestry came from the Samuel Doty line of Piscataway, New Jersey.

So what does this mean? There are a few possibilities with the first being that there was an illegitimate birth in the Brees line prior to Timothy or even the fact that Timothy himself was born out of wedlock, his mother probably being a Brees woman and his father a Doty. Other possibilities are naturally adoption, along with a scenario that a woman married a Doty who whom she had a child, Timothy. This Doty died and the woman married second to a Brees male who may have adopted Timothy legally, or at least his surname just changed from Doty to Brees. So in our research now, we don’t want to look solely at the Brees family in central New Jersey, but also have to keep our eyes out for which Doty male could possibly be the father of Timothy. This can be done by monitoring the Doty surname group at Family Tree DNA for descendants of Samuel Doty who could fit into Timothy’s ancestry. I would also encourage other male descendants of Timothy Doty, especially those not descended from Tim’s son Jesse, to have their yDNA tested in the Brees surname project so we can verify just was the yDNA markers were for Timothy’s descendants.

I hope to hear comments from other Brees researchers.

Chris

Chris Brooks
Kansas City, Missouri
816-363-1831

Thanks for your response. We are at a dead end. Jennie raised my grandfather (Mack Brees) in and around New Orleans. She gave him her last name and nothing has ever been mentioned of the birth mother Jennie's mother. I have been to the grave site and saw the records indicating that Mack Brees paid for the interment. However, she is in a family plot of people we do not know. The man next her was a Purvis????? Let me know if you have any other leads. The Davis family from Ark. has an extensive site that includes my grandmother and Mack...

Hi Patti; I emailed your personal email as well about another post you had on here about Ethel Brees. I have not been on in a while for my Brees branch and I forgot that I have found more info on Albert Brees. The info that I found did say that he was born in 1857 and died in 1947. I am not sure where he died, but he was born in Indiana. This is all other's research, so without looking into census records and other validators I cannot be for sure. I did find his parents and his parent's parents. Also, I have 8 children listed for Albert and Elizabeth. I have a few generations for Elizabeth Kesselring as well. It has been YEARS since I have looked at that branch, so I would have to review it. I would be happy to share anything I have with you. Just let me know what you have, and maybe you can fill in some pages for me as well! God bless, Kim

I have an Albert Brees, b Mar 1857 in Indiana. I do have any parents or sibling information on him. I know that he married Elizabeth Kesselring. His children are: Peter, Pearl, Jesse, Ethel, and Claude. Let me know if this lines up with any of your Indiana Brees'.
