I live in Owatonna Minnesota and my husband's family are Brekke's. However I have the other name of Orvedahl rather than Dyrdahl. I have that when they came from Norway they were first in Iowa than moved to Minnesota. However they were living in Owatonna in the 1880-1900 time period. I'm not sure where Hermund fits in yet as I'm in the early stages of this side of the tree. I have some photos. If you are interested in posting a copy of the photo I could have my inlaws look at it and see if they can reconigize who is in the photo. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I'm so glad that you contacted me on behalf of your friend. First things first;
1) Christine (?) Brekke- another person who gave me some information stated that her maiden name might be Gunders(daughtter), she & Sever came over on the ship "Hero" on April 4,1873.
2) Gunder Brekke- the last census I have for him is 1900 in Benton,ND. & I have his birth year as 1872, whether the information you have on him is correct I'm not sure. It's possible that it is him.
3) Caroline Brekke- My great Grandmother married to Henry Broe my great Grandfather. Yes I have information on Henry & Caroline's children as my Grandmother was one of her daughters.
4) Henry Broe- as far as Leonard being a brother, I haven't found any siblings as of yet. It's possible that he may have had a brother. I show that Henry was born in Iowa, did Leonard also come from there.

I'm looking for info on Andrew P. Brekke, born about 1871 in Norway and died ?. He came to the US around 1873/1874. About 1897, he married Carrie Esterby, born 23 Oct 1871 in Norway and died 15 Sep 1969 in Wisconsin. They settled in Turtle Lake, Barron County, WI, at least until 1930.

I'm trying to find his parents/siblings in both Norway and the US, as he was only 2 or 3 years old when they immigrated.

I'm searching for more information on my great-great grandparents Sever H. Brekke and his wife Christine who came from Norway. They had 4 children, Julia born in Norway about 1870, Gunder born in Norway about 1872, Betsey born in Wisconsin about 1874, and Caroline born in Wisconsin in 1876. Caroline is my great grandmother, she married Henry Broe from North Dakota. They had nine children, my grandmother Julia was one of the nine. Brekke - Dyrdahl connection in Minnesota

I am looking for information connecting Hermund Lassesen Brekke with an Ole Dyrdahl family.

Hermund L. Brekke immigrated in 1879. He was born in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway in 1853 and raised his family in Rice County, Minnesota. His wife was Martha and they had Louis, Ella, Pearl, Tillie and Herman (between 1882 and 1894).

I have acquired an old family album and within is a picture taken in Owatanna, Steele County, MN - probably taken in 1880-1900. The picture is labeled "The Ole Dyrdahl family -- a distant relative to H. L. Brekke". The family picture looks like a mother with 3 older boys and 3 young girls. Hard to tell, but the boys look at least to be teenagers, but probably not older than mid-20s. The girls all look younger - not yet teenagers.

I have looked on the Digitalarkivet in Sogn og Fjordane but have not found a family to leave Norway with these dynamics.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

As far as i can find in Norwegian records it seems as your branch of the Nordin family was from the north of Norway. Today i know the current branch is living in Karlsoy in northern Norway. One of them is the well known artist Synvis Nordin. Hope this helps you a little

The Brekke's had a family farm in the area of Plummer, Minnesota and there may be a Thief River Falls connection. He married Selma Nordin who died in 1957. She too was from Minnesota. I am looking for any sibling information for Albert, his parents were John and Karen (Olsdater) Brekke from Norway. Any info on them would also be appreciated.

Selma's parents were Simon and Carrie (Englebretson) Nordin, also from Norway but living in Minnesota. Does this sound familiar?

Alma was born to parents Magnus and Anna Nustad on March 28, 1899, near Renner. She grew up in the Renner area and married Halvor Brekke on May 12. 1918, at Sioux Fails. They farmed for a few years and later moved to Renner. Halvor died on November 24, 1951.

Alma was a House Mother at the South Dakota School for the Deaf, retiring after 17 years. She also worked as a cook at the Renner Corner. Alma was a life-long member of the Renner Lutheran Church.

Alma died on Wednesday, March 30, 1988, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared her life are three daughter, Mrs. Noble (Muriel) Valerio, Sherburn, New York, Mrs. Herman (Marvel) Brende, Renner, and Miss Shirley Brekke, New Hartford, New York; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Pete Nustad and Palmer Nustad, both of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, two brothers, eight sisters and one step-brother.

My Grandmother was Amy Brekke Rude; her father was from Vik, in Sogne Fjord. He was a Minister in the Dakotas/Minnesota 1890-1920. She visited there in the late 1950s, and found a key her grandparent had hidden in the old Stav church. There are still a lot of family there, as my Mother went to a Return-Reunion in Vik a few years back. My Grandfather, J. O. Rude, had a geneaologist in Norway searching both sides of the family for years. I have a cousin in WA State who has a fair amount of data. E-mail me for address.

I am looking for information on the Brekke's from the Sogn Fjord Norway. My great-great grandfather was Lasse Lasseson Brekke 1842-1917. He moved to America in 1871, at that time, he changed the spelling of my last last name to Brakke. He has 8 siblings. They are: Monsina, Synneva, Ingebrigt, Pernille, Nils, Anna, Else and Ingeborg. They came from the farm called Brække in Lavik Parish [also spelled Ladvig/Ladvik at times]. Here you will find what might be your Lasse in 1865 with his brother and couple of sisters and their widowed mother.

Hello!
I took a look at the emigration records from Oslo 1871-1921 to see if I could find your family. Since there is a child born in Norway 1872 and the next one in the States in 1874, they must have emigrated in between there.

I found a family that matched pretty well, even though the daughter is called Gunild - not Julia. I know that they often changed their names though, so that might be the reason.
They emigrated April 4, 1873 on the ship Hero. The agent is Allan Brothers, and the family's destination place is Clinton, Wiscounsin.
The father is Syver Helliksen, 40 years old. Mother is Kirsti Gundersdaughter, 32 years old. The children are Gunild Syversdaughter, 3 years old and Gunder Syversen 9 months old. They all come from Rollaug parish in Buskerud.

I then checked the 1865 census to see if I could find Syver Helliksen in Rollaug parish (also called Rolloug and Rollag).
I could not seem to find him there, BUT there was a Brekke farm in Rollaug, and the man owning it is called Hellik Ingebretsen and might very well be Syver Helliksen's father. After all, Hellik is a very unusual name, and this was a very interesting coinsidence.

I think there is a great chance that if this family lived at Brekke farm in the years before they emigrated, there is a good chance they would choose this as their familyname in the States. In Norway, parents and children would allways have different last names because they were named after their fathers firstnames (son of Hellik, daughter of Gunder, daughter of Syver and so on..)

I hope you found this information interesting, and that this might be the right family.

And NorwigenToo. How about that! I have learned my grandfather was a stowaway when his uncle left Norway for rhe United States at the outbreak of WWI. Lived on the fanily farm near Oslo, born about 1900, and I believe his name was Jon. Settled in Brown Co., MN. married a Norwigen farm girl, raised four children one of which was my mother Helen, who gave my up of adoption at birth in 1954. The family "Brekke" still has the farm in Norway. Can anyone Tell me More? I would love to finally learn of my "roots".

Johan (later John) Brekke was "best man" at the wedding of my grandfather Karl Edvin Busland and Anna Halmina Johnson in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin in 1909 or 1910. Johan married and lived in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. I don't know about spouses name, but I may be able to find it. This might or might not be the same Brekke as yours. The father of the Johan that I am aware of was named Karl Brekke, and he and his wife lived in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Chippewa County.

My great grandmothers sister left Norway and went to the US in 1903. Her name was Marie Hansen Brekke.Her husband was Jacob Bernhard Olsen Brekke. They were both borned 1868. They brought 3 children: Margit Brekke b. 1895. Borghild Brekke b. 1898 and Gordon Brekke borned Aug. 13th 1900.
