Mundy's Station later became Romona, which is located in the Northeastern section of Washington Township, in which is located the county seat, Spencer. "Where the county seat was to be located was for some time in doubt.... Mundy's Station was...a rival. Brintonsville was laid off by Adam Brinton, an eccentric old bachelor, at what is now called Mundy's Station. It would have been a formidable rival for the county seat but for an attempt of Mr. Brinton to make a speculation out of his lots....he employed a venerable preacher to act as 'puffer' and run up the price of the lots; but the people getting wind of this...refused to invest...." (p. 663-4) "in the year 1819, the first tax was levied.... In this year, John Dunn's ferry was taxed $5, and that of Adam Brinton $8." (p. 695) OWEN COUNTY, INDIANA, 1884, Charles Blanshard, editor. First Edition, Second Printing 1997. If you want something more exact, I think you would have results by contacting the Owen County Public Library in Spencer, Indiana. They have a very useful and helpful genealogy section.
Cordially, nancy
Nancy R. Scott. nrscott30@yahoo.com

This is really cold. It is related to an article that I wrote from notes from a lot of researchers of Owen Co. IN history/genealogy. Right now I don't know where to look for the article. But I will see if I can find it. I'll post a note on Owen Co. IN rootsweb list. Perhaps whoever donated this information will catch up with us again.
Happy hunting!
nancy

In this part of Indiana, the name appears as "Brinton" in early records. I'm reading through the early county commissioner reports of Monroe County, where one of the first roads ordered to be constructed in the early days led to "Brinton's Ferry" on the White River. Do you have any idea where this was located in terms of section number/township?

They had a daughter Josephine who married a Yeilding, son Andrew Jefferson(Jeff), son Robert E.(Bob), daughter Alice, daughter cornelia (Nellie) who married a Bracey- her first cousin., Daughter Caladonia your great grandmother, son Hardie(Horchee)and son Walter Scott who happens to be my great grandfather. my Name is Amie Brenton and I have been looking for info on the Brenton line. I know that John Riley Brenton's mother was Catherine ( Lou Katy ) Feilds and that his father was also named John Riley Brenton. His father was born in 1812 in Indiana. I have not been able to go past that. I would love to correspond with you and maybe we could find out more info together! I also recently recieved a photo of John Riley and Dorinda from another one of Josephine Brenton Yeilding's line. Would love to send it to you!
My email is amlybre@gmail.com and my name is Amie Brenton.

My Grandmother's name was Ethel Olive Brenton b 1913 and she married my Grandfather Arthur Cameron in 1932 in Adelaide, South Australia.
Henry Brenton and Mrs. Hannah Ginn

Henry Brenton married Mr. Hannag Ginn in Shelby County, KY in 1793. They later moved to Barren County, KY where they joined the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in 1800. Also a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in 1800 was Nancy Ginn who was my GGG Grandmother. I am trying to prove that Nancy was the daughter of Mrs. Hannah Ginn from her first married to an unknown Ginn. Nancy Ginn was married to Jesse Stallsworth in Jan 1803, and Henry and Hannah Ginn Brenton asked to be relased from membership in Feb 1803 when they moved to Clark County, IN. Jesse and Nancy Ginn Stallsworth remained in Barren County, KY, but several of their children also later moved to Clark County, IN. If you have any information about Henry and Hannah Ginn Brenton, PLEASE e-mail me directly at: sendmeit@suddenlink.net

My grandfather's grandfather, Dr. Samuel Brenton, was a veterinary surgeon who emigrated to Michigan from Ontario, Canada and founded a veterinary practice in Jackson, Michigan c.1880. He eventually moved his practice to Detroit, Michigan (c.1887).

I have found that his parents were Francis and Elizabeth Brenton, formerly of Cornwall, England, and that they had emigrated to the area near Hayden's Corners in county Hastings, Ontario, Canada prior to 10 October, 1858 (the date of Samuel's birth), but can find no records of them or their predecessors.

Any information that anyone could provide regarding this [or any related] branch is most appreciated.

Charles William Hogg

Hello Joy

Thank you for your message. My daughter-in-law had only just brought the paper to me. Yes, Charles William Hogg was my grandfather. My father was 15 when his father was lost at sea. My grandmother died in 1916 just a few hard years afterwards. My father spoke very little about that time but his sister, my aunt, told me more of the effects and efforts made to alleviate them.

There had been a recession in the transatlantic trade and my grandfather, who had been a purser on some Cunard ships for many years felt fortunate to get the job of bedroom steward in the first class section of the White Star Titanic. Most of the better jobs went to Southampton based crew but tips were good in the first class section, so grandfather was glad to take the job.

Thank you again. I read the Daily Post ! I would be interested to know more about the very elderly Smiths of my childhood, if ever you learn more.
Have had to be devious in getting this reply to you as my PC would not allow me to reply directly for some unknown reason.

Kind regards
Charles in Mold

Brenton, William, sons Adam & Robert Samuel

Russell Hamm lists Adam Britton's Ferry at Munday's Station. That man is Adam Brenton, the older brother of Robert Samuel Brenton. These two brothers came to Owen County, IN from Clarke County, IN. Their father, William, having been granted land there for his Revolutionary War service, took his family from Bourbon County, Kentucky.
How might they have crossed the Ohio River; that is, where were the landing sites? And how might the brothers, who came independently to Owen County, IN travel from Clarke County, IN?
The aforesaid Samuel Brenton later left Owen County, IN about 1855 for Iowa or Nebraska with his wife, Margaret L. Jean. They had a son, Adoniram Judson Brenton, born near Ottumwa,Wapello County, Iowa in 1856 and a second son, Benjamin Brenton, born in Nebraska. Their third child, a daughter, was born in Owen County, IN. What route or routes might they have traveled?
Late in 1861 Sam Brenton enlisted in the Indiana 50th,which mustered in Seymour, Jackson County,IN. The unit then traveled, I know not how nor by what route, to the camp of rendevous and instruction near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. Sam contracted pneumonia enroute and died before they reached the camp.He was buried in Bardstown, and along with other soldiers was removed to the military cemetery near Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky sometime after the war. Any idea how those men went from Seymour to Bardstown?
Judson Brenton married Mary Elizabeth Rice and they lived at one time in Farmer,or Farmer's Station, Owen Co. IN. Their son Herman Orville Brenton, married Mary Annette Gantz, a daughter of Dr. Thomas Gantz of Freedom, Owen Co. IN. He was an only child. They moved to Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN and after Judson and Mary died, the Brenton family was gone. Herman inherited the house down by the railroad and general store in Farmer. The old highway went up over the hill to the east of the present highway; it still exists and a few families still live there. Mary Annette (Gantz)Brenton's parents are buried in the Farmer Cemetery; Judson & Mary Elizabeth Brenton and Herman Orville & Mary Annette Brenton are buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Owen Co. IN.
We would love a reply with any information that you may have. Thanks.
Nancy Scott, searching for a Brenton decendent & for Owen County, IN research.
Hi Valerie:
I don't know of a Crispin Vincent Brenton but my 4th great grandfather Thomas Brenton was from Cornwall born about 1842. I have lost his trail from that point.
Would love to find out more about his line.
Regards
Paul Brenton Moore

the St Merryn Brentons moved there from St Wenn in the first part of the 18th century. Philip Brenton and jane Knight had Henry b.1758,William,b.1755, Jane, b.1760 and Prudence b.1763 in St Merryn.
Henry and Frances Old had Henry b.1789, John b 1797 and Richard, b.1800 (my 3x gt grandfather)who moved to Padstow. Henry 1789 had a son called Henry b 1828 in St Merryn and maybe he had a son called Henry. I would guess your Harry name might come from Henry, but without knowing your grandfather's name, that's all I can say.

Maria Brenton (London)

I am daughter to Katherine Mary Gallant...grandaughter to Millie's sister,
Marie-Anne (Bathilda)Thompson nee: Gallant

Tommy Thompson never adopted my Mom (Kay)
Mamie and Papie (Melanie and Gabriel) raised her until the age of 12. Story has it that her biological father came out of Halifax, a young boxer mulatto named Benny Benz. I am wanting to learn what I can of him. Apparently he also fathered a daughter with an Ida Perry...also in Summerside. Benny apparently went to war and died. Wanting closure with any information possible. You have done an amazing job on this research!! Thank you for help. Kathleen Moors

I checked out the family of Maj. James Brenton, on Ancestry Family trees. He was born 1740 Va, died 19 Aug 1782 Mercer Co. Ky, Married twice and his children born from 1764 through 1779. No Martha listed. His son James, b 1764 died 1836 in Indana, had no Martha listed either,
1818 is too late for these men I'm afraid.

Howard Boswell

I believe she married Anthony Brunnemer(born PA died Mar 1857)and she was born in KY. I do not know where she died but I believe they were parents of William Thomas McMillan
Brunnemer 3-30-1853 and James O. Brunnemer. Can anyone confirm that Martha's father was Major James Brenton who fought in the Revolutionary War? Please and thanks.

I am related to the brenton family as a "half" niece as orrie remarried after my grandmother died to floy moore. Most of the family lineage has been researched, the only person, not accounted for was orrie brenton, although he might be buried in kansas. This is my grandfather. My main interest lies in finding out some information or lore about him because, he apparently led a colorful life as a cowboy, traveling from town to town to compete in rodeos; he even had a mural painted, with him as the subject, riding a bucking horse. I actually saw this mural in the early 1960's in a bus station, somewhere in Oregon around Portland, but i was really small and didnt understand that this was my grandfather, lol. Well, thank you for your input, anything is appreciated, sincerely Quinn

Hi Tom, My William Brenton was born 1 June 1760 in what is now Hampshire Co.Virgina, USA. Back then it was the Southbranch of the Potomac River. He died 21 Nov 1838 in Clark Co. Indiana. Married Fanny Wiley. His father we believe was Henry Lewis Brenton who died at the Redstone Old Fort on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania, USA. Henry Lewis son's were Andrew, Francis William Robert Adam Samuel & dau Anna all born we are pretty sure on the southbranch of the Potomac River. My William had a son William but he was born about 1803-1804 & married a Sarah Harlin in 1841. I have not come across any of the info that you spoke of. Do any of these dates match anything that you have?

Sincerely

Lynn

To start you're looking for "Velpen" Indiana, an unincorporated area in Pike County, here's a link to a Wiki site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velpen,_Indiana

Here's an abstract of Otto's World War 1 Draft registration card from 5 June 1917-
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Otto Perry Brenton
Name: Otto Perry Brenton
County: Pike
State: Indiana
Birthplace: Indiana;United States of America
Birth Date: 30 Apr 1894
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1653179
DraftBoard: 0

His draft card stated he was a farmer working for a Henry Garison in Marion, Indiana. He had two brothers under 12 he was caring for.

Now for his father. Jas is usually a shortened version of James.
Brenton

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY....I went to the link you posted and read all the information I could find on the 65th Regt. at least I know what it means now thank you again !! Yes I know where he is buried and the information you have is correct.....Clida P Brenton (Sutton ) is my grandmother and Otto P Brenton is my grandfather. They are both buried In Union Cemetary right outside of Doniphan Mo. it's a small family owned (Sutton) cemetary. I have a picture of their tombstones side by side and I also have a copy of his death certificate. The problem is I cannot find anything on his parents or siblings or anything. We have information on him but it stops with him! I went to the national archives but there is sooooo much on that website I don't have clue how to search on there. His death certificate states his fathers name is Jas Brenton....Mothers listed as "UNKNOWN" .My grandmother never spoke about him to me nor did my mother who did'nt know much about him either since he died when she was about 12. HIs place of birth is listed as VELBEN INDIANA on the death certificate .... which does not exist according to search engines on the web and map. I have ran out of Idea's ....Can a person get a copy of someones military records when you are a grandchild and not the person child? Birth certifacate is suppose to be harder to get I was told.
Thank you again for your help....sorry this is so long a post !!
TheresaHise48

Re: John Brenton obit, Halifax 1905

This John would not have been a direct descendent of Admiral Sir Jahleel Brenton as he had two sons and two daughters. The eldest son died as a teenager in England, and the other son died without having children. Both daughters married and children.
This John would not have been a direct descendent through the Admiral's father, who was also Rear Admiral Jahleel Brenton. He had three sons, Jahleel (above) and Edward Pelham who had no children of his own, and James, who died during a naval battle while on board the Petrel.
I do however, believe he is related, as many of Rear Admiral Jahleel Brenton's siblings and nephews also reamained with the British Navy.
I just don't know which one yours belongs to yet.

He was married to helen homewood, who died before him in about 1934. any information would be appreciated.
