A Family Mystery
I have been told on several occasions that Dorothy Florence Brett ( my grandmother)was working as a reporter for the Montreal Star in the mid 1920s,where and when she met my grand father, Whose full last name I will not enter until I have proof. His first name however was John.
The story goes that my grand father was a prominent doctor belonging to a prominent Montreal family.Dorothy, as part of her job, was sent to interview the doctor and chemistry between the two was so great that one thing lead to another and over the course of a long and passionate relationship my father resulted.I am not sure about the marital situation of my grand father at the time, but it was rumored that he was married and their relationship and my father had to be kept secret.Over time it was said (verified to my brothers by more than one elderly person who attended my mother's funeral) that my father was accepted into the his father's family, and was absolutely adored by his grand mother Helen. As time went on my father (Morris William Brett) met my mother (Marie Madeleine Therese Potvin)
Therese however was not accepted by John's family except by Helen, most likely because Therese had two children (my two oldest sisters)before getting involved with Morris. After many threats of insolvency if he did not end the relationship,my father disowned all but Helen and married Therese on March 3 1950.
I spent most of my life believing in a most likely fictitious grand father, who was a distant family member (George William Brett),who was supposedly killed by a stallion in 1925 and buried in Trevor Hill Cemetery near Mansonville Quebec before my father was born.I could find no trace of this person,Not written nor by word of mouth from people who lived in the area at the time.Even the year of my father's birth has come into question as none of the original records can of his birth can be found. His real birth year most likely being 1927.This date I determined from the dates written on recently discovered old photos of my father.
I and my older brothers remember visiting the grave of who I was told was my father's grand mother (Helen) at Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal when I was a very young child. But I can not remember the details.
Shortly before my father pasted away he confided the truth about John to my older brother Harry, and giving him letters that were exchanged between John and Dorothy.I can not say if these letters are real or not,as my brother, like my father, for some reason wants the truth to remain buried.
I know that it is not likely but if anyone reading this has any information that will help bring the truth of this to light, PLEASE! get in touch with me at
