Looking for information re: John & Sarah Bretz

Hello! I have been searching for more information concerning John Bretz, born about 1873 in Transylvania, and his wife, Sarah Ignatz Bretz, born about 1874 in Transylvania. Records indicate they arrived in America around 1914, and thereafter lived in New Castle, Lawrence County, PA. They had six children: Andrew, Anna, Catherine, Michael (1898-1942), Sarah B Weirick (b. 1898), and George (b. 1910.) It appears that only the three youngest children were in the US and the older siblings remained in Transylvania. It appears they were of German descent and spoke German.

There are conflicting family recollections. In one, the parents returned to Transylvania and may have later arrived in the US a second time and settled in the Chicago, IL area. Someone recalls that John may have become a business owner. Others recall that they did not return.

It has been passed along that the parents may have lived with or near their daughter, Sarah Weirick, who lived in the Chicago area.

In any case, I have been unable to find any information and would be most grateful for any information concerning this family.

Brenda, very interested to learn what you know about Julia.
My great great great grandfather had a sister whose name was Katharina Juliana who was born in 1836. He, and his 4 sisters were orphaned in 1843 when both parents died.

my grandparents were floyd bretz and Sarah Evans. My great grandfather was Amos Bretz. My parents were Bruce Starcher and Juanita Bretz. I live in Hampton Virginia courtesy of the military. Dad chose to retire here. Both parents are now deceased.

I am and have been for a long time searching for Bretz families from Planig. My GG was Peter Bretz he had brothers,John, William, Henry. John didn't come to the US that I know of. But his sons did. But I am not sure of his Parents names. Can anyone help? Peter was born in 1814 in Planig, Germany. Thank you Nadine Wheeler

I so wish all these connections had been found before my dad, Tom Dooley, died last year. It is obvious to me your Philip and my Philip are first cousins and named for their grandfather, Philip Brtez.
I would love a copy of the tombstone. I have one of my branch will have to look and see who is on it when I fire up the old desk top computer. Wouldn't be surprised if everyone is buried near each other at Evergreen.

I have Catherine Bretz Schmidt death as 13 Mar 1938. I have photos of their headstones if you are interested... Catherine's son Philip is my greatgrandfather... I have his birth in 1896... But he is a Schmidt and your uncle is a Bretz.

Your Philip has been hard to find. Marcia that you is list Maria Elizabeth - she was born 11/1849. I have her death certificate. She married Joseph Pipher.

I also found George, married first to Sarah Jane Pipher, in 1861 and died before 1867; and a son, William M. Bretz, who died in 1874 at the age of 12. He married, in 1867, Malinda McFarrin

Their sister, Mary C. Bretz, married William Pipher. Haven't found anything for them yet.

I am so blown away that all the sudden this year I am finding links to the Bretz family. All I can say is when my dad, Tom Dooley ,died last year he must have gone straight to heaven and started shaking the tree loose!!! LOL. My line is Philip and Julia (Zimmer) to John "Henry" and his wife Catherine (Haegele) to Julia and Jim Dooley to Tom Dooley and Peg (Kenney) to me - Mary Lynn Dooley m to Bob Deen.

I was born in Elizabeth, lived in Linden birth through 2nd grade and then Cranford to marriage in 1977. After that moved to Maryland and now in NC. Most my family still in NJ.

When did Catherine Bretz Schmidt die? Other than our GG grandfather the only Philip Bretz I am aware of for pall bearer purposes is my Uncle Phil born in 1910.

Philip Bretz is also MY GG grandfather, b. 1929 (that I have). The 1870 census (and my mother!) says Philip was born in Hesse, Germany. Most of my family (descendents of Catherine Bretz, daughter of Philip). From Philip all the way down to my mother, almost all lived & died in Elizabeth, NJ, and then buried in Evergreen Cemetery there. Catherine Bretz b. 1/7/1858 and my mother says she 'came from' New York City where she married Christian Schmidt 8/15/1880.

I am also researching this family as a descendant of Catherine Bretz, d/o Philip and Julie. She married Christian Schmidt. in 1880. My resarch started with their son Phillip who married 1.Mary Nichols 2.Elsa Jarius.

Do you know when Phillip immigrated? Do you know when he died and if there was an obituary?

I have also have been trying to figure out the children in the census and where they belong. I suspect William Gietz was a Bretz mispelled.

Would love too share info on these lines.

Grandad had two brothers, Nicolas who died in 1904 (I think) of a back injury and Bernard who moved to Idaho. Haven't followed that trail yet. I have lots of info on Granddad I'd be happy to share with you. :)

Thank you for posting Charles' obit. He was the grandson of Adolphus Theodore Bretz and my 1st cousin 2xr.

Adolphus m. Esther Catherine Frost 06 Nov 1874 in Meigs county, Ohio. Their son, Amos Theodore Bretz m. Alice Alma Buck (possible date Aug 1895)most likely in Guysville or Athens. Their son, Floyd Webb Bretz m. Sarah Blodwen Evans probably 1923 in Athens. Floyd and Sarah were my grandparents.

Sarah's parents were Moses and Ella Tolbert Evans. Have been told that Ella's parents were David Evans and Sarah unknown. I have no proof.

Would love to share info with anyone researching any of these lines.

No, there is no Albert SCHULLER in our family. My ancestor was Charles SCHULER who also lived in Iowa and settled in Chicago, Illinois.

A M BRETZ arrived in Chicago in 1849 making her one of the first or the first Bretz to arrive in Chicago. She arrived on or about the same time as Anna Bretz Seiler (b. between 1826 - 1832), my GGGRandmother that lived in Chicago. They took a train from New York to Buffalo, New York and from there boarded a ship and sailed from Lake Erie, through Lake Huron (past Fort Mackinac), around the top to Lake Michigan, and from there to Chicago Illinois. I am interested in any information about any of the early Bretzes that came to Chicago. The Braun surname might be related too. I just started doing research on the Bretz family in and around Clovis. The Tollhouse cemetery has several family members of yours. I remember going to the Bretz lumber yard in Clovis when I was younger. My grandfather worked at the Bretz Brothers mill up near Shaver in the early days. Have a picture from a book with my grandfather with Lou,Frank and Bob Bretz. Going to Clovis next month so I should be able to help you if you need pictures.

I may be able to help a little. You can view my family history on Ancestry it is called the Judah Family Tree. Anyway my grandmother was Ruth Garton Prather, her mother Blanche Garton's mother was Anna Jane Bretz who was the daughter of Henry Bretz and so on. I even have Ludwig Bretz Sr. as a Sergeant in the Revolutionary war. I have a Bible and very old documents substantiating on all this. Grandpa Bretz is in the SAR under National Number 121187 and state number 1480. My tree is still under review and construction.
