I am not sure of the origin of his name but I do know that some of his relatives did migrate to TN as well. My Alexander Walker Brewer was born in Alabama so I have been told but I have not been able to verify according to family writings his mother and father are George and Marth Brewer.

OBITUARY: Elizabeth Jane (Brewer) Sayles.

Newspaper: Akron ''Register-Tribune.'' [Plymouth County, Iowa].
Publication Date: Thursday, February 18, 1909. (Volume 22. Number 27).

Obituary of:
ELIZABETH JANE (BREWER) SAYLES.

SAYLES -- At her home in Akron, Iowa, Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 1909, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Sayles, aged 71 years and 12 days, of pneumonia.

While she had been in poor health for a long time, the last illness of Grandma Sayles, as she was affectionately called, was of only a few days duration, the end being hastened by advanced age and incident infirmities.

Elizabeth Jane Brewer was born in LaPorte County, Indiana, February 05, 1838, where she passed her girlhood days. She married Jonas Sayles at Rolling Prairie, Indiana, April 18, 1861. They came to Union County, South Dakota in 1882, buying a farm five miles southwest of here. There they resided until the death of her husband, April 30, 1892. Since that time she has made her home in Akron, [Iowa]. Well and faithfully did she perform the duties of life in the long span of years allotted her, and sweet and lasting will be the memories of her goodness by those near and dear to her. She is survived by one son, Elmer M. Sayles, a prominent attorney at Primghar, Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. H.F. Hansen [Lula / Lulu May Sayles], north of this city; also a sister, Mrs. Ellen Couchman, of Lyons, Nebraska, all of whom were present during her last illness. The community extends its sympathy in their bereavement.

The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday), at 1:00 p.m. in the M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church, Rev. J.L. Ayrault conducting the service. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery [Akron, Plymouth County, Iowa], beside her husband.

[end]

.

Brewer, Peter, New York, 1781 to 1870 plus

Trying to locate any additional information on Peter Brewer, born Sept 19, 1781 to Mathew Brewer and Annetje Ouderkerk in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY. In the 1810 Federal Census Peter appears as head of household in Hoosick. I believe that the three males under 10 were sons: Matthew, born circa 1804, John, born circa 1806 and Lucious, born circa 1809.
In the 1820 and 1830 Federal Census Peter appears as head of household in Blenheim, Schoharie County, NY. His occupation was farming and by 1830 there were 15 persons in the family.
In 1834 he appeared in the Rochester City Directory and in the 1840 Federal Census he appears as head of household in Clarkson, Monroe County, NY.
In the 1870 Federal Census Peter is listed as 89 years old and living with a daughter, Lydia Wright in Hamlin, Monroe County, NY.
Any additions/corrections/contacts would be appreciated.

James Walter, Henly and Richard Brewer (1854)

I am just beginning my search for my string of the Brewer line. My father, W.J. was born in Leachville Ark. His dad, James Walter was from Tenn. and, so far, I have traced grandpa Brewer being Henly's brother and the son of Richard (b. 1854). If I'm correct, and am not sure I am, Richard's father was Oliver. Can anyone tell me where I should go to confirm this? Also, who was Richard's wife. As I said, I'm just beginning and really don't know where to start so any tips would be great.

Milton, David, Elijah, Abraham Brewer and DNA too

Anyone with connections to Brewers or the Surnames mentioned from Fulton Co, IL, 1840 on and to the Chemung, NY area, late 1700 on.. (Possibly Ohio, and PA)... maybe we could help each other. Much detailed info at end of this post. It is very important to remember that many people were illiterate and their names were spelled by someone else, the way they sounded to them. I have one family group with 3 different spellings of the children's names. Often births were registered, when they began doing that, by a neighbor or a sibling, when they went to town. Usually they did not write the information down, someone else did. So, you will find lots of different spellings, but they belong to the same folks. Spelling standards were not established until 1920 for the census. AND... even more exciting, census data in the very early years in the US could have been collected from neighbors or even servants, if no adult family member was present. Records then were definitely NOT what they are today, unless dealing with well educated individuals.

I have a participant in the Brewer/Brouwer study at FamilyTreeDNA. Perhaps any Brewer group who feels they have well documented paper trail could get together and chip in for a Y-37 test on a Brewer male bloodline descendent (a willing son, father, uncle, grandfather or grand uncle)to take the test. The older the person the better, but if all you have is a willing young guy... grab him.

Once you start to make a connection, round up another bloodline Brewer male from the same group... get enough matches, with good paper trails... you have got gold.

Only male DNA Y-37. Go through the group, prices are lower, matches are made automatically, complete with detailed calculations, if they are found.

The thing is, you'd have to trust one another, pitch in the money (divided up, it isn't much) and let Mom or whoever order the test, FTDNA will sent son, husband, uncle, father, grandfather the test to be done and returned. Tested person would need to sign so the contact person could handle the results.

This makes it easy for those who are NOT interested in genealogy, but willing to take the test. No one has their personal information, they would not be bothered, the contact person would deal with other genealogists.

The Brewer Group Administrator is very good about working with folks who are handling tests for others. The test protocol is not hard, but MUST be done properly, following the instructions supplied. The tests are then returned and it takes a couple months before the first test results come in.

The data is posted with other Y-DNA results, (the man tested doesn't have to have their name there, nor do they have to be available to be contacted). The genealogist contact person for that line, the relative or male Brewer, wanting to track the line, would handle contacts. Results would be posted on the Brewer/Brouwer group board.

Those who contributed toward the test would be kept up to date by the contact person handling the results. Only the contact, in charge of the results would have access to the private page, and would be the contact via email for matches(an email address on yahoo or google is useful). Every added BREWER male improves the chances of making firm connections and getting through brick walls.

Personally, I'd match the results against the entire base at FTDNA... Lots of astounding misspellings out there. See what turns up (there are several parts to a good match). The results can also be posted on FTDNA's confidential World Wide Board too. Matches may be made that way, through other companies testing, not just one firm... although they have the largest data base and they retain the data for comparisons for groups, something that many firms do not do. The contact/administrator for the persons tests should NEVER give out the personal page address or access codes or passwords to anyone. The contact person would have to be willing to keep everyone posted about matches.

It can be a lot of fun. There is one lady who has many men in the group... she is very knowledgeable. The tested persons GEDCOM should be posted, getting back well over a hundred years, shouldn't be to hard for most folks.

Confidentiality and Security are very high at FTDNA and the University who does their testing. The Contact person needs to write down and store the original coding links between FTDNA and the University lab. Because they are the only way to access the DNA results.

Don't bother with 12 or 25 marker tests (FTDNA will hate this), they really aren't worth it in genealogy work, you need more markers, not less.

The Contact person would have to be be willing to learn a bit about Y-DNA etc. Keep the personal page up to date with information. Post a GEDCOM. I wouldn't post info after 1910.

Like here, include name, DOB, place of birth, DOD, and place of death, if you KNOW it for sure, on the tested male. A GEDCOM greatly increases the chances that people will take a look for that connection and follow up. Put up what you know for those 4 things, for as far back as you KNOW them. It helps encourage folks to look through their data for you. I have made many connections... just not my Brewer one... yet.

It would be great to get men into the study with good paper trails. It is the only way to prove things for sure.

Split up among a number of people, the cost isn't bad. I know, because have quite a few folks in Different Groups.

If additional males can be recruited from the line with a good paper trail, go for it.

My Brewer line working up, Milton Brewer, Fulton Co, IL, died 1936, Wife, Cora Murdey. His father, David Brewer, born Elmira, NY 1818, married Rebecca Pickett prb. OH 1840, He died 1892, Fulton Co,IL (2 of their daughters married Scales men and most likely settled in Iowa. David BREWER's parents were Elijah and Margaret Eliza Kinyon Brewer. Buried Chemung Co, NY. Elijah Brewer's parents were Abraham and Eunice Griswold Brewer, died Chemung Co, NY early 1800's. Possibly there is a John Brewer, as Abraham's father, but I have found no definitive proof of this. Two of Abraham and Eunice Griswold BREWER's daughters married Stull brothers, Rev War documentation here is good. One Stull line is very well documented from the Brewer daughters marriage down.

In the late 1700, early 1800, there were many Brewer, Stull, Kinyon and Griswold Families in Chemung Co, NY. They are found located adjacent to each other in many census documents. Revolutionary War connections through the Griswold and Stull lines. I'm seeking to prove Abraham Brewers Revolutionary War service. His wife Eunice Griswold Brewer, has two brothers, Elijah and David Griswold who are Verified Patriots, and her father, Elijah Griswold is in the process now at DAR. The Stull Brother's father is also a noted Revolutionary War patriot... who took his young son to war with him as a horse handler.

Unfortunately, Elijah and Margaret Kinyon Brewer both died before the every name census in 1850. Elijah died in Ohio, but is buried with his parents in Chemung, NY. Margaret, is buried in a small church cemetery in Southport, Chemung Co, NY. She was head of the household in the 1830 Census, there were 7 members in the household. She was also head of the household in the 1840 census, dying in 1844. Her life must have been most difficult, raising children, when their father died relatively young. A most interesting line and very prolific... in its many branches.

The Brewer line I am researching has not been proven to my satisfaction beyond Abraham, documentation is very hard to find from that period. But I am still looking.

I would like to hear from anyone with connections to Brewers in the very fluid Tri-County area... late 1700 to current day. It is a difficult area to research, because boundaries of counties, towns changed frequently, so you are must look everywhere. In one case, folks found themselves in another state... due to a boundary dispute.

Playing detective is a blast.

Bonnie Brewer

Hello,
I hope you have some luck on this board. Lots of nice people here. If I could offer a suggestion. You might try joining the Brouwer/Brewer Y-DNA Group at FamilyTreeDNA. I have Brewers in the group and I imagine there are others here that do too.

It would help a lot if you could supply some more information about your line. If you feel you could supply information from 100 years back with safety, that would be most helpful. Names, DOB, Place of Birth if known, Place of death. It helps to have as much as possible to give folks a place to start looking, as far as their own data goes, when trying to make connections. I have been looking a long time too... but not as long as you. I hope you get lucky.
Bonnie Brewer

I am researching Samuel Washington Brewer bn Mercer Ky 1825. Moved to Newman Illinois. I think there is a connection to your line but cannot find anything on Samuel's parents or siblings. Did your line come from KY?
Nancy

Jefferson Brewer is listed on the 1860 Bradley Co TN census in HH1398...HH#1392 is Daniel Goins...HH#1400 is Hugh Goins.

Jefferson was living in Davidson Co, NC in 1850. How did you discover Sarah "Sally" was a Brewer? Maybe this would give is some clue if she is connected to Jefferson Brewer.

Brewers of Douglas and Vermilion counties, Illinois

I am compiling a rather large line of Brewer descendants from Douglas and Vermilion counties, Illinois, mainly, James 1794-1862, Charles 1778/9-1856 and Richard Brewer 1794-1862. But I also include their brothers(Edward,Jacob, William) and sisters (Mary 'Polly', Elsie Plowman, Sarah Roderick) Their father was John Brewer 1733-1809. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will be glad to share. Thanks.

Hey Pam. I don't get to check here all the time, so just got your post. I'm happy to stay in touch but read email more than posts unless I get an alert. I'm starting to think I need alerts on Breathitt boards and Hawkins Co TN also.
How goes your hunt? I'm lookin for the big hook ups now...how did they all get around so much?? My Brewer family seems to be all over the country by 1920 or so. I guess not everyone loves those Ol' Blue Ridges!!
Did you know that when folks first came to America King George would not allow them to cross threw those mountains?
No wonder there was a revolt!!
Great searching Pam.
Hello Sue. This Brewer bunch lived all up Cutshin and down Greasy Creek. In other words they lived from the tip of the Blue Ridge to the bottom. (What is now NC to GA)
When they first arrived they were forbidden to pass through the Gap to KY by order of King George of England. Our Brewers were overseers to English holdings.
Rowan is a popular place name. As a town in early NC, and a county in the formation of the state of KY. Ky is made up of several states, and for many years the boundaries kept moving. There are photos of the "Old Lewis Brewer Place" in the digital archives of the UofK website.
Cordially,
pam brewer

It is rumored that our Ezra, s/o D B Brewer and Fannie Perry died in Covington. Supposedly in a tow truck fire. My Ezra drove a tow truck. He was married to Ethel Ledford.
Proof of birth, marriage, and children. No news clipping on his death though or an obit.
I have Blevins in my line. I am not positive of anything in regards to my Jerry. There is recreated BC on Breathitt County web. Says his father was Thomas Brewer (1825-1885) who married Elizabeth Pelfrey. I am descended from Jeremiah 1852-1913, who married Louisa Lawson; through his son Daniel Boone Brewer (1872-1953),who married Fannie Perry.
My grandfather was Boone's son, Perry (1904-1936).
Not that I could ever afford to do a test--but I do have brothers, and a son. I'd sure like to know from whence--to where.
Anyhow, for some reason, my Jerry is not even in the testing results. Not sure why...plenty of documents that tie him to Brewer family from Frozen and Holly Creek area.

I am in the Brewer/Brouwer study at FamilyTreeDNA. Perhaps the group who feels they have documented paper trails could get together and chip in for a Y-37 (Y64 is top) marker test on the male descendent (someones son?) who was willing to do the test.

You don't need the mtDNA, just the male Y-37. If you go through the group the prices are lower. If you watch, they also have sales. The thing is, you'd have to trust one another, pitch in the money and let Mom order the test, have it sent to her son and see that the son does it correctly. The procedure is detailed, and MUST be done properly.

The data would have to be available on the Brewer/Brouwer study group board, not hidden. Only Mom would have access to the private page, and she would be the contact via email (an email for that on yahoo or google, random address is useful). Every added male improves the chances of making firm connections and getting through brick walls.

Personally, I'd match the results against the entire base at FTDNA... Lots of astounding misspellings out there. See what turns up (remember there are several items that make a real match).

The results can also be posted on FTDNA's confidential World Wide Board too. Matches may be made that way, through other companies testing.

The contact/administrator for the persons tests should NEVER give out the access passwords etc to anyone. Because the page can be altered by anyone with the codes.

Also, FTDNA and the University security is very high... if the Contact person misplaces the original coding link between FTDNA and the University test lab... to bad... results are gone.

Don't bother with 12 or 25 marker tests (FTDNA will hate this), but they really aren't worth it in genealogy work, you need more, not less.

AND The Contact person would have to be knowledgeable or willing to learn about the other applicable markers. Keep the personal page up to date with information. Post a GEDCOM. Lots of people post close up data, I wouldn't post anything under 85 years ago. Include name, DOB, place of birth, DOD. whatever you know, for as far back as you KNOW it.

It would be great to get men into the study who have great paper trails (that means with documentation that matches). It is the only way to prove things for sure.

Split up among a number of people, the cost isn't bad. I know the prices, because through the Group, I paid for tests at Y-64 and mtDNAplus.

The Brewer line I am researching dropped out of the sky, I guess. I'm still looking for the cloud from whence they came. LOL Good luck
