Mike

Was wondering if you have made any progress on your Brewin ancesters,

i have re-read your earlier message and found a slight error
The John Brewin i have circa b.1790 is, Samuel Brewin b. 1800(Senior's) Brother, (Parents were William and Ann)

Samuel Brewin snr, had 3 children Samuel Brewin Jnr 1843 -1913, William Brewin abt b.1839(i have him living in Manthorpe Cum Little Gonerby from 1871 onwards which i believe is not to far away from Great Gonerby)
and melicent Brewin,

William abt 1839. was married to an Elizabeth Ropson

As you say, if your GG Granparents Alfred and Lucy, lived in Commercial Road, adjacent to Brewery Hill where my G Grandfather and his Grandfather (Samuel Jnr) lived, Then there must be a very definite link , but just how far back do we have to go to find it.

My Grandparents Peter and Betty Brewin, Lived in Sharpe Road, Grantham.all in the same area.

i can give you access to my Tree if you interested.

Kindest Regards
Ian Brewin

Hi

Not sure if you are still "live" on this site. I have not checked it for ages & now, having done a lot more family history investigation, I can give you the following information.

Joan Amelia BREWIN was born c1900 [deduced from her marriage record]. Her parents were Alfred Hope Brewin [b Bombay 14-07-1877] & Aida ? Joan's siblings were Denzil [c1898-1983], Neil [1899], Cecily [1907]. Alfred was one of my father's uncles & his brother Fredrick Charles was my grandfather.
I have a problem with the date of marriage to Eric Hale [your father] as the church returns show:

Marriage data: British Library N/3/126 p263 [1921 pt2] & Hyde Park Family History Centre film 0523912 [1921 pt2 p263]: Joan Amelia BREWIN [spinster,21] & John SMITH [bachelor, 31] on 1st Nov 1921 at The Holy Name (RC) Church, Bombay. Licence. Abode: Bombay. Capt. R.A.V.C Fathers: Hope Brewin & Christopher Smith. Witnesses: Peter ? , Jerome Braganza.

The marriage to Eric must have been ay a later date? I did have a letter from a Sydney Brewin [now deceased] who stated that Joan had a brief marriage to Eric Hale & that there were no issue! Obviously this is wrong!

Please feel free to contact me [gordonbrewin@hotmail.com] as I have a load more information going back to around 1800 on the Brewin side of the family

Ian

I have Grantham Brewins in my tree. All five children of my GG grandparents, Alfred Brewin and Lucy Roberts, were born in Grantham in the 1870s/1880s. In 1871 Alfred and Lucy were living in Commercial Road, which is the adjacent street to Brewery Hill (the address you mention in the first post).

Alfred and his six siblings were born in Colsterworth (to the south of Grantham), but his father, William, and all of William’s brother and sisters were born in Great Gonerby (just to the north). My earliest known Brewin ancestor is Thomas Brewin, b. abt 1767, who married Mary Barber in Great Gonerby in 1796.

Have you searched the IGI for your family? It looks like Samuel Brewin (b. 1800) married Elizabeth Howell in 1826. There are three children listed in the IGI in Denton between 1826 and 1830. IGI entries for Denton end in 1833, but you will have seen the three children (including Samuel junior) born between 1839 and 1848 who appear in the 1851/1861 censuses. Samuel Brewin (senior) was the son of William and Ann.

John, who you suggest was Samuel’s brother, was the son of William and Elizabeth. Could be the same William, but other births to William and Elizabeth in years either side of Samuel’s birth suggests not.

There is no Samuel Brewin in my tree, so no obvious link to connect my family to yours. Perhaps there might be if only we could go back another generation or two. It would be good to compare notes.

Regards.

Mike
Ian,
I haven't been able to find out who John Brewin's parents were but I do know his mother died when he was about 3, so probably around 1823. It was at this point that he was taken to Grantham from Barkston.
John married Eliza Sexton in 1846 and lived in Westgate Grantham aroung 1851 and by 1861 had moved to Little Gonerby just outside Grantham, where he lived until his death in 1885.
It seems not impossible that your John b 1790 could be my John's father, but I have not been able to find any more information online, my primary source at this point.
Regards,

Liz

Hi Ian,

My GG Grandfather was John Brewin. He lived most of his life in Grantham or very nearby. He was born in Barkston, Leics in 1819 and died 1885, so not a direct connection. However he may have had brothers. As he was an ardent Wesleyan Methodist it is possible that family records are not available via some of the usual sources. John had three daughters so the name dies out at that point in our family. I'd be happy to know more/supply details if you think there may be a connection.

Yours, Liz Pett

I'm tracing my father's family tree and have the following information.

My Dad was Harold Brewin, bn 3.02.1920 (died 1997) in Gt Bowden to Edward and Louisa Brewin.

Edward Brewin was bn in 1878 and was married to Louisa Gunning. Edward died in 1955. Edward was a bootmakers errand boy at 13 and a footman at Swakeleys House,Ickenham in his older years. He lived and raised his family in Swakeleys House while he worked there as footman and latterly groundsman. Louisa was housekeeper.

Edward's siblings were: George (carpenter/railway checker), Madeline (domestic help), Harry (railway number taker), Ernest (postman),Ellen (dressmaker), Grace and Rowland.

His father was William Brewin, bn 1848 and married to Jane (Wright?). William was a Butler, again at Swakeleys House, I think.

I believe William's father was also a William, bn 1813, but I am having difficulty tracing much beyond this as there are two possibly ladies who could be his mother, both widows. Their names are Rosamah and Mary.

Thanks Edna.
I Googled Bridget Dae, because it's such an unusual name, and got this
http://www.immigrantships.net/v3/1800v3/gazelle18461217.html
It has to be her, don't you agree? As she travelled under her maiden name, you might want to check the marriage date.
Hi Edna, many thanks for your response. The link looks very promising. Can you give me any other info about James Brewin and Bridget Dae? From what you say it appears he was a settler from this side of the pond, but would you know if Bridget arrived with him? Their dates of birth, country of birth, marriage date and location would help me if you happen to know any of it. Did Sarah have any siblings?
Anything you think I might be able to help you with, just ask.
Best wishes
Peter
My great-grandfather John Roberts married Sarah Brewin (or Brawin) in St Johns, Newfoundland on 12th October, 1867, whilst serving in the Royal Artillery. They returned to England in 1870 and remained there for the rest of their lives. Sarah was born in Canada in 1847, but I have nothing else on her.
Hi Doris, there may not be an individuel connection, you say some of your Brewins were farmers, didn't farmers have cattle over the centuries, even today. I was told once that big families move away from each other if they wanted to if they did. So an earlier ancestor may be the connection between your Brewins and mine. Have you been able to find out anything more earlier?

Thanks Michele for your reply.
It's not the same Sturley line as mine, although possibly related. Both lines are from Norfolk and we are sure that we are related as all the ancestors come from within a few miles of each other but haven't yet found the connecting relative. I certainly known your line and am in touch with many relatives of John Thomas Sturley's siblings - including several in Canada and one in Costa Rica.
Irish Brewins

Is this site just for Brewins from England? My relatives came from Kiltoghert, Leitrim, Ireland in l847. His name was William Brewin, son of Kitty McPartland and Brian Brewin. His wife was Mary Boyle. I have some family notes on the extended family after immigration, but have nothing for the era before. Thank you.

Brewin in Civil War/Vermont

Dear Karen,

Which unit in l861 was your James Brewin from? There appear to be more than one - one from the Burlington/Underhill, Vt. area and one from the Addison County area. Do you know which one was yours? The James Brewin who is on my list was Irish American and born about l841. His parents were Bernard Brewin and Betsey Farrell. He later moved to the New Orleans area and died there. Also, there is a wonderful site about the Civil War and Vermont with a lot of genealogy. Check the pension records information on ancestry.com - one of the Brewins had a widow's pension application and the name was changed slightly. Good luck.
