I too am descended from the Montgomery County Breys. I discovered it on my 4th great-grandmothers Philadelphia death Cert. It says her parents were Martin and Martha Bry and that she was born in Montgomery County. She married James Haddon about 1830. Her father was the son of Christopher Brey, who was the son of the first Brey in the country - I think his name was George Bry and he came to this country in 1737. Chris Brey served in the Revolution. I found it on the 1840 census.

You could try the Kewaunee County Courthouse records. Her dates of birth and death according to her tombstone are June 10, 1825 and April 19, 1882. Or you might be able to find her obituary in the Algoma Record Herald. Not sure how far back they go. Also not sure if you live in this area, which would make this more difficult.

Margaret would be my paternal GGGGgrandmother. Another board member provided me with an article about the "murder" of John Goettinger. Surprising! That article indicated that Margaret drowned but I could find no other information on that. Any suggestions on how I might find Margaret's maiden name as this is all still new to me?
Thanks.
Barb

I do not have Margaret's maiden name. I do have a picture of her grave stone in Algoma's St. Mary's Cemetary. I also have a very interesting (and long) history on the mysterious demise of John Goettinger. Have you seen it? How are you related?

Hi;
Your message popped up from my search for information the Goettinger family in Ahnapee, Kewaunee, WI. Mathias Goettinger was brother to John Goettinger who lived there as well. John's wife's name was Margaret and I am desperately trying to identify her maiden name. Since you mentioned Mathias, I am hoping maybe you have information on his other family members that might help me. Anything you might share would be much appreciated.
Re: Origin of the Brey name

Perhaps I can shed some light on this as a German speaker.

"Brey," or "Brei" means porridge, or gruel in German. It is an extremely common surname in Bavaria-- the Munich phone book is full of them. The name, in Germany at least, is pronounced to rhyme with "eye" in accordance with standard rules of German spelling and pronunciation, although in the U.S. the pronunciation changed to rhyme with "bay".

Another alternative spelling, dating from the times when literacy was rare and folks spelled things as they sounded, is "Prey". For example, there was a famous German baritone named Hermann Prey (1929-1998). Hence the spelling of Ms Pry's name.

Best regards,
Carter Brey

Hi Debbie,

I'm not sure if you're still working on this search, but I am the granddaughter of the third (I believe) George Brey, who was married to Germaine Zimmer (also of Algoma, Wisconsin). I believe my mother, Nancy (Brey) Dietrich, would be the same generation as you!

From the records I have (written by Josepth L. Goessel), George Brey Sr was married to Mary Marik. George Brey was her SECOND husband--she was originally married to Mathias Goettinger.

I hope this helps--please let me know if I can help you further, or if you have any information to share with me!

I am looking for any info on the Brey family in New York, NY area. My grandfather was Rudolph Brey(b.1902), son of William Brey, but unfortunately that is as far back as anyone knows. Also, My father has a brey family coat of arms that I am wondering about... it has a solid white lower field and a red upper, with a small gold lion in the center right above the white field. Does anyone know how accurate that is? Thanks for any info

Dear Sir,
In the National Archives there is a family history page torn from the Brey family bible, a believe by someone(Conrad or Christopher???) and sent to Washington to substantiate a Revolutionary War Pension Application. It lists the original Brey settler in America as Johannes George Brey and coming from a place called Eib--------------, Germany. It is very faint and I don"t read German, so perhaps you might look it up in the pension files. Sincerely, Pat ( nee, Pry-used to be Brey) McCormick
Dear Sir,
Thanks for the info, I have been to Koblenz(sic) but did not notice the name of Brey in that area. I am returning in June and will search the area, thanks. I believe the Breys in PA were pretty much all from the same family as I have been able to trace them for the original in the 1730's forward, and from the present back to the early 1800s. But just like you, I find so many of them that it is hard to fill in those middle details.I belong to a branch that moved a little further north into the Allentown, Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe area. Do you have any information on a George Brey born in 1790 and died af ter 1850? There is one married to an Eva, but the children's names are not the same. If you give me your questions, perhaps I can help you as I have done a lot of research including wills from Montgomery County. Sincerely, Pat

Some publisher in Ohio if I recall, which may now be out of business. Irwin was born in 1853 which means that Charles cannot be his father. I cannot find a father which may mean that Irwin came here from Duetschland or I just cannot find a father. The spelling may or may not mean a thing for Irwin (Erwin).

Barry

Approximately when was he born? do you have any of the 17o0 linage? Where would one get a Brey book? I'm going to Germany this spring so I'll visit Brey!!! Do you look like the townspeople? I hope we can figure all this out, thanks for your interest. Pat
