Hello from Virginia Gibbes I noted your information regarding the GIBBES family of U.K. Barbados, Charleston, I am from the Australian line, originally from Sir Philip Gibbes of Barbados & Kent, Oxfordshire U.K.
one of Sir Philip Gibbes daughter Lady-in-waiting to the court of George 111, from Hanover Germany and England, originally The House of Hanover later to be re-named The House of Windsor, by George V. during WW1, due to embarassing situation of being at war with Germany, and having a German name, Lady Agnes Gibbes 2nd daughter of Sir Philip Gibbes had an affair with Frederick Duke of York,2nd son of George 111 producing a bastard child John George Nathaniel Gibbes, Frederick saw to the childs upbringing, his nominal father was a John Gibbes Planter of Barbados,
given the royal trapping, Gibbes was educated at the Merchant Taylors School LOndon , and privately tutored in Wales, prior to entering the Army Headed by this natural father Frederick Duke of Your, following a colorful wartime career, Napolionic War, Battle of Monte Video, etc. Gibbes was given posts as collector of Customs, Jamaica, Greater Yarmouth, before Sydney in 1834 where he arrived with 7 of his 8 children, Gibbes built the now Customs House, was one of the originators of the N.S.W. Legislature Assembly, with others know as Colonial Aristocrats,Gibbes designed and built the now named Admiralty House in Sydney, a Vice Regal Residence, and the other Government House Canberra, originally owned by a son-in-law Sir Terence Aubrey Murray, then his youngest son Augustus Gibbes,
" Gussie" made the home known as Yarralumla into a prosperous sheep station,Gussie had 4 sons by a lady he met an Bath U.K. Annie Bartram, the youngest Allbert Edward my Grandfather, Gibbes by now a full Colonel retired from Sydney with his wife Elizabeth to live out their days at Yalrralumla, Canberra, both died in their mid 80's Gussie saw to it that 2 stained glass windows with
The Gibbes Coat-Of-Arms were added to the tiny Gothic Church of St John The Baptist, the family Crypt is also there, of interest is that, both homes Admiralty House, Sydney and Yarralumla, now Govenment House Canberra are both the Vice Regal residences, the church, St Johns the Vice Regal Church, I am in Baltimore presently, and to have my blood taken to match against the Windors, on file in the U.K. to prove this blood line, wowever we do still have a straight Gibbes line, which would involve, Barbados, Charleston,
U.K. and the Northeast of the USA. We had a fine friend Commandant of the Naval Academy, Rear-Admiral Sheldon Kinney whom we met at Newport, with our boat the yr. Australia won the America's Cup, The Kinneys kive in Annapolis, my late husband from U.K. was Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, a founding member and first Director,of the now "Kennedy-Krieger Institute" for children. more recently we were at Yale, I woud appreciate any information regading the Maryland connection as both my daughters were born here, one now a Dr. at Johns Hopkins where she was born, the other a Lawyer.
I know we have connectons from S.C. R.I. Philadelphia, Ct. did not know of any in MD. I would appreciate any information, with thanks, Virginia Gibbes Richardson.
